- Trax91, on 05/01/2008, -4/+98There will be iBlood
- icurnvs, on 05/01/2008, -12/+64Hopefully, Apple will see that there is a definite market for an upgradable Mac that you don't have to pay $2500+ for.
- RyeBrye, on 05/01/2008, -4/+53From the benchmarks / review:
* It's LOUD. Crazy loud. OS X doesn't seem to interface with the fan controller, so it runs at full tilt all the time. It doesn't really come across on the video, but it's loud enough so that it's hard to talk on the phone when the machine is running. There's no way we could deal with this thing on a daily basis.
* The DHCP lease drops every fifteen minutes or so and you have to manually renew it in prefs.
* The included copy of Leopard was out of the shrinkwrap, but there's no way to install it -- it shows up in Startup Disk but it won't restart, and it's not recognized at boot.
Wow - that sounds like a complete piece of *****. - charris1980, on 05/01/2008, -7/+53apple knows there is a market. they don't want that market though. they want to have their own hardware working with their own software. if steve wanted to just sell his OS to every pc manufacturer out there he could do it easily.
- fLUx1337, on 05/01/2008, -2/+45Mac: Hello I'm a Mac!
PC: And I'm a PC...
Psystar: AND IM A PYSTAR OPEN COMPUTER....
Mac: Whats with the shouting Psystar?
Psystar: FANS, THEY ARE....
PC: Opps, wheres he gone? Blue screened?
Mac: No, OSX doesn't blue screen, it looks like he updated.... :D :D :D - TheDeadDodo, on 05/01/2008, -5/+40Here's a better idea: Apple should create a viable mid range machine that's expandable.
- intellimouse, on 05/01/2008, -6/+35Well, not easily. It's a lot harder to make an OS that runs on lots of different hardware configurations.
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -4/+31this rules until a software update gets rolled out and bricks the whole thing.
- chevyorange, on 05/01/2008, -2/+29Apple should put out a "RickRoll" update for it.
- killerknives, on 05/01/2008, -1/+23Lawsuit in T-Minus 10....9....8.....
- RyeBrye, on 05/01/2008, -1/+22Wait... what about the whole fiasco about this company being fake? (i.e. pictures of houses that were supposed to be business addresses... etc.) So... they are real?
- adamriggins, on 05/01/2008, -9/+27Well, so far, so good. Now we just need to see how well it works and if it can be updated. This has the potential to be a pretty big thing!
- MyNameIsJoe, on 05/01/2008, -5/+22Look at all that popcorn styrofoam.
I think Al Gore just shed a tear. - TheDeadDodo, on 05/01/2008, -7/+23Go away, Windows fanboy. Jack off over a picture of Steve Ballmer or whatever it is you do when you're not trolling Mac threads.
- cmdrNacho, on 05/01/2008, -2/+18THIS IS PSSSSSSYYYYY STAAAAARRRRR
- Jok3r, on 05/01/2008, -0/+14nice comeback :/
- jcblitz, on 05/01/2008, -0/+13I'VE ABANDONED MY BOX!
- AWBoy666, on 05/01/2008, -0/+13Yep. Gizmodo really ***** up with that one.
- Digitel, on 05/01/2008, -0/+12Please get a tripod...
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+12look for osx86 on any torrent site, thats what psystar is using
- PommieZ, on 05/01/2008, -3/+15Let me get this straight... Psystar would prefer to repack the thing in a larger unmarked box with a massive amount of peanuts, rather than just reuse the case's Made In Taiwan cardboard box? Just to shove a copy of OSX into it and keep it anonymous? Geesus...
- ryancalderoni, on 05/01/2008, -1/+13All this time I pronounced it pie-star until I heard him in the video, when I looked at the word again the second S suddenly appeared... WTF?
- Purin, on 05/01/2008, -3/+15It's unfortunate that FireWire isn't more popular. It's so much better than USB.
- toxicityj, on 05/01/2008, -0/+11Here's a far superior idea.
- nblsavage, on 05/01/2008, -1/+12He retrofitted his house with solar and gets his power from a company that produces power by hydroelectric. By the way, his house is his family house (as in passed down through his family)
- HouseCentipede, on 05/01/2008, -1/+11It's not "bricked" if you can just ***** install Linux or Windows on it instead.
- ibone, on 05/01/2008, -2/+12Its got the vanilla kernel on it. No different than a normal mac with an added kext for the video card. Software update will not break it.
The only difference is a pre loaded EFI bootloader that emulates EFI so the ***** machine will boot. Software update has ***** to do with the EFI bootloader. Learn before you talk. - uberamd, on 05/01/2008, -3/+12What the hell? I had OS X on my computer (Tiger) back in 2006 with relative ease, suddenly its getting big hype because someone is taking an existing 'free' concept, charging $150 for it + Hardware costs? BIG F**KING DEAL! To anyone not living under a technology rock, the ability to make your own cheap mac has been around for years. *begin sarcasm* Congrats to Psystar for profiting on the OSx86 projects work. *end sarcasm*
- Daggity, on 05/01/2008, -0/+9I drink your iShake!
- RCcola159, on 05/01/2008, -3/+11It can't be updated, sadly.
- JoeBaynham, on 05/01/2008, -2/+10I don't think Apple's legal team will let it get a "big thing" before it starts eating into their profits.
- cawpin, on 05/01/2008, -0/+8The only thing they've done is broken a EULA. They've done nothing illegal. Also, that portion of the EULA may not be enforcible. Can you imagine if Microsoft tried to put "may only be installed on Microsoft hardware" in their EULA? We all know that wouldn't fly.
- toxicityj, on 05/01/2008, -0/+8if they could find it...
- TheTSArt, on 05/01/2008, -0/+8It looks like they took Apple's approach to packaging and did the exact opposite.
- MacParrot, on 05/01/2008, -0/+8Don't worry about it intellimouse. Once you reach your teens you might feel different.
- MacParrot, on 05/01/2008, -0/+8Those are some serious problems. I do some podcasting and I can't have a computer that sounds like a cyclone running in the background. Also the fact that if the drive dies you have to send it back to Psystar for replacement. I wonder if you used CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper and duped the drive if it would work?
The fact that they couldn't start the machine from the OS X install disk is a potential problem in the future as well. If it won't boot, it sounds like you'll be SOL. Make good backups of your data people if you buy one of theses. - sarchosis, on 05/01/2008, -2/+9Well there ya go, if you want an ugly piece of ***** that technically "runs" OS X, it's there, have fun. Is anyone surprised?
- djh816, on 05/01/2008, -6/+13Vanilla kernel. Yes it can.
- IEatHamburgers, on 05/01/2008, -0/+7EULA =/= Law
If it was law, then I could make a piece of software, write up a EULA that says you must repeatedly dance like a clown while you own the software, get you to buy it, and then sue you or have you arrested for not dancing like a clown. It doesn't quite work that way. - dummptyhummpty, on 05/01/2008, -1/+8Apple's "End User" License Agreement says that you can't install their software on non-Apple branded equipment. Since they offer to install Leopard for a fee some people claim they are violating the EULA. Others note that since they aren't the "End User" they can't get in trouble.
- bikini, on 05/01/2008, -0/+7mmm pie
- Onetrack, on 05/01/2008, -0/+7Yeah anything with a vanilla kernel can be updated.
I know mine can, and I built mine, didn't buy one. - jmeeker516, on 05/01/2008, -0/+6Only one that inherits Microsoft's ingenuity could make such a poor attempt of a mockery.
- xxrazor, on 05/01/2008, -1/+7Does the Psystar box use a build of any of the various Leopard x86 builds, like Kalyway, ToH, or iATKOS?
- NerveBand, on 05/01/2008, -0/+6Guess it is a real company. Who knew? Anyways, that is some horrible packaging, thats for sure.
- solidus636, on 05/01/2008, -1/+7Admit it...you'd touch it if they paid you...
- HolyChimp, on 05/01/2008, -2/+8"Supported updates will be listed under support on the Psystar website. Future operating system updates may cause severe system problems. Only install updates that have been tested and posted to the Psystar support website."
From Psystars FAQ http://www.psystar.com/can_i_run_updates_on_my_ope ... - MacParrot, on 05/01/2008, -0/+6If I was flogging the podcast I would have mentioned it by name or linked to it. All I did was site a circumstance that a machine that loud wouldn't work for me. Don't be an ass.
- ElectricSoup, on 05/01/2008, -0/+6"Apple should sue this company"
They might lose if they did.
The interesting thing is that Engadget has demonstrated that you'd have to be daft to buy one of things, if for no other reason than that the noise of the fans would drive you off your head. A Mac mini is virtually silent. This thing sounds like a jet taking off -- and it sounds like that all the time. Engadget:
"OS X doesn’t seem to interface with the fan controller, so it runs at full tilt all the time."
The genuine article has a number of other advantages, too -- not least iLife and firewire. Here's one Slashdotter:
*************************
A mac mini delivered costs 599. Go over to mac mall and you get 2Gb memory, parallels, ilife, a printer, and free shipping for $599
Conversely, the a Pystar running mac OS costs
399$ + 155$ (OS) + $50 shipping. = $604
if you want firewire add $50 , the mini comes with it. (note you need pystar to install the firewire for you).
if you want wifi, blue tooth, optical audio, etc.. you'll have to buy them. Maybe they will even work with the OS too. who knows.
then of course the annual power bill is a lot less for the mac mini since not only is it lower power, the operating system power management actually functions.
