Project: Mac mini Cube

- guytoronto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Very groovy. I wish Apple would offer systems like this. Mac mini guts + 3.5" drive + TV tuner. The cube looks fantastic beside that large screen LCD.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Fantastic mod!
Clean, useful, and best of all, it fills the void in BYOM Apple desktops between the $900 and $2500 mark. - DrakeGTA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@guytoronto I'm with you on this one, hope they bring it back...

Thanks babylonfive for a great mirror!
(his post is further down the page, mod him up, not me) - rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3From http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/BYOM :
BYOM Bring Your Own Mac
BYOM Bring Your Own Marijuana (club/cafe)
BYOM Bring Your Own Meat
BYOM Bring Your Own Milk
BYOM Bring Your Own Money
BYOM Bring Your Own Munchies
Seriously now, Apple refers to the B on BYOM as Bring (Your Own Monitor), not Buy..makes a big difference marketing-wise :)
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Fantastic mod!
- shieldss, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Great DIY project. Time to go scour ebay for Cube parts....
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27I guess kudos to this guy, but to me this looks like:
1. A great way to destroy a nice G4 Cube.
2. A great way to make a Mac mini bigger.
Personally I wouldn't want to do either of those things.- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6it already had a SATA drive, they just replaced it with a much larger drive, which may or may not spin faster than the 5400rpm that the original disk does.

....doesn't work. - imafish2002, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Did duggmirror not catch it?
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Nope... which sucks, it's really great work
- babylonfive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17http://www.123macmini.com.nyud.net:8080/macminicube/
- SolidusSnake, on 10/12/2007, -25/+2lol what a piece of trash.
- doorman444, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3so lets see what you can come up with genius
- brispet1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Couldn't you just hollow out the cube and stick the entire mac mini in it? what makes this a cool mod?
- diulei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You mean like this?
http://www.cubeowner.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12068&hl - gblackbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You *could* just hollow out the inside and shove a Mac Mini inside. However he wanted to take a more elegant approach.
"I did not want to simply put the "guts" of an Intel Mac mini inside and "dress it up", but to refresh the Cube and create something that could stand out."
Check out the mirror: http://www.123macmini.com.nyud.net:8080/macminicube/
It's actually quite an accomplishment.
- diulei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You mean like this?
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1i don't understand this ? Was it a broken Cube or something ?
- diulei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wish Apple would bring back the Cube.
I already have a 20" widescreen monitor so getting an iMac is kind of a waste - so I'd like an Apple desktop with more ease of expansion + power than a Mini, but no so much the need for a beast like a Mac Pro.
Very cool DIY job.- rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Dude, the iMacs have video out! Two monitors rules!
- jole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Absolutely Amazing. I've been waiting for someone to do this, and he couldn't have done a better job. Well done! :-)
- manitoba98xp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now _this_ is what the iTV _should_ be!
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Yeah I did the same thing by placing my mini in an empty Acer tower.=P
- mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Wow he made it bigger. cool?
- basye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As the owner of 2 hard-working, stock Cubes--this post is heart-breaking!
LOL, not really--but it just goes to show what a classic piece of artwork the
cube continues to be. - rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was skeptical at first (hmm, take an small, elegant modern mac and put it in an older, bigger mac...wtf?) but this is actually an elegant and well thought-out mod. Dugg.
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Coolest mini mod I've seen. The Cube has such a sleek design and the compactness and power of the mini just beg to be put inside a Cube! Awesome work.
- camkerr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Congrats, that was a really cool mod, I wish i had the balls to do something like that to my computers.
- deedas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, this kind of makes me want to paint my cube black.
Nah! Why mess with perfection. Mad props to that guy though. - DeezKnots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The final setup looks awesome. Very classy entertainment piece.
- DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gorgeous! A very nice effect with the Apple logo. The Sony Bravia tops it off wonderfully!
- jbink303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man, stuff like this makes me wish I hadn't chosen teaching for a profession. Unless ole Steve Jobs has some kids that I can tutor or something and payment would be all the Apple stuff I wanted.
Anyone got a few thousand dollars laying around anywhere they're willing to part with?
On another note, 4000 people just starved to death and I feel really bad about wanting a Mac Mini Cube. - gordeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like his work, I did a mac g4 cube mod a while back which used a mini-itx pc motherboard and 2 big discs. I ran it as my file server for ages. It was 100% passive so very quiet.

The cube is possibly the prettiest apple ever made, shame it was so pricey - irregardless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Weird. I was think just yesterday that this would be cool. And then it happened. Thanks internet!
- mabhatter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd like a "cube" mini as a "hacker" mac. 2x DVI out with intel graphics to keep it cheap. 2x 16x PCI express fo rupgrades to the Mac Pro cards. Expresscard 34 like the notebooks. I could live without firewire 800, but include all the wireless the current mini has. Add to that some extra USB ports... the full 6 the chipset supports, placed in clever places... some on top, sides, bottom, for things like TV tuners. Lastly, a big enough power supply to drive it... again, perhaps allowing a dual external bricks, or drop the Mac Pro PS in directly.
Note, the idea would be to keep the same parts they use now, just open it up for the PC crowd to get interested! Bonus points if they made it one single line that parts were upgradeable from year to year... they could make a killing.
