- notorious., on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Note: This is NOT a universal binary. it will not run on a PowerPC machine.
which is pretty stupid, but alas. - Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It's an Audio production application generally used in professional studios. It's far from the best, but it's one of those apps that have been in the field so long it's reputation has become mythical. Lets put it this way, it's the 'photoshop' of the audio production realm (except photoshop IS the best in it's field.).
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The way ProTools uses audio drivers it would be a mess to write the program to handle both PPC and Intel. Perhaps they will try to make it a UB in a future release.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you still run/have a 98/me machine, you can get a copy for free (totally hardware independant too, so whatever you have it'll more than likely run.) http://www.digidesign.com/ptfree/
Anyway, protools is out on pc. Perhaps you're thinking about Logic? (it used to be available for the pc, but apple bought emagic, logic's developer and killed off the pc version.) - aquax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You'd think PT owners would get the hint. Every single tiny little hardware or software update Apple does, PT hardware/software refuses to cooperate. This has been the case since I've been using Macs, which has been 12 years now.
- xr56n44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4update? digidesign? are you kidding? the only way they'll update something is if a new OS comes out and all the customers scream bloody murder. oh, and that's only if they don't have a new product in the works... cos otherwise they'd just abandon it and tell you to buy the new hardware.

MOTU! Mark of the REAL pro - Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is that a joke?
- soaring, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm on the CuBase wagon, now if only steinberg would get off their asses and release a Universal of SX 3. ProTools, while great for the big studios is terrible for the home user. I bought the MBox2 this year and returned it in 2 days because I could not get it to work properly. I find it asinine that PT will not work on a drive that is in a RAID config. I'd make the jump to Logic, but I've been using CuBase since the days of my Atari 1040st.
- djnick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ya i was thinking of logic pro. sorry about that
- Rkstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does anyone know if this fixes the problem with QuickTime 7? I guess I don't know too much about it, but I know after a friend of mine upgraded to QuickTime 7, that broke ProTools. He had to go back to QuickTime 6. I'd assume if ProTools works on Intel (which no official QuickTime 6 does), they must have it fixed.
- nocode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i dunno if i should digg you for your honesty or undigg you because you're a sucker...
- RevMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple has said for year that the developers need to move to Xcode. They all balked. Now they are scrambling to recode. Too bad for MetroWerks, though. That is the who reason that Adobe put CS3 for Intel until the next scheduled revision date. Why move millions of lines of CS2 code to XCode only to have to do it all again for CS3. As CS3 is rumored to be a a new codebase for Mac and PC. t is said that Adobe has literally hundreds of thousands of lines of code in Photoshop that havent been changed since PS3.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm a professional musician and producer besides being a designer. I disagree that Photoshop is the best in the field of graphic design ( I use Paint Shop Pro a lot more, believe it or not), almost the same way I do believe pro tools is the best audio mixing/recording tool, for its features and interface. Logic? It's still not as good as pro tools, even before apple picked it up. Sonar? Don't make me laugh. Steinberg Nuendo/Cubase? They've been trying hard for more than 10 years, poor germans...
- il0vemymac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just love how Digidesign gave me a free upgrade from PT 6.something to 7.0, but no serial number to upgrade it to the Intel version.
I'll be on the phone with them tomorrow... - baronvonrolo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1YES!!! I've had to reassemble a track in Logic for an assignment because this wasn't around.
Can't describe how happy I am,
Oh and Goffy, you're wrong. - robotsongs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, that RAID problem is pretty ass. You would think that, you know, milliondollar studios with an SSL 9K and about 3 yachts worth of ourboard would have clients important enough that they might want some data redundancy in case something happens.
But then again, I'm just a little pawn basement recordist. What do I know? - Prod_Deity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's Peak LE like?
I still have my C.E.P. 2.1 disk. heh. - final_sound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i take it the raid issue must be with mirroring only? i run protools 7 with an mbox2 on my pc, and i have raid striping, with no real problems.
- xr56n44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the free version of PT is so crippled that it's worthless
- Capta1nA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2pro tools is the standard, but logic pro is the best :)
sometimes i forget how many DAWs there are - Prod_Deity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to work in radio, and pro tools was a bit overkill for our needs
Cool Edit Pro (now Adobe Audition) was a great program for doing everything Pro Tools could do, but cheaper & less dependent on hardware. - RevMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree. But when Adove bought Syntrillium, they wanted me to pay $300 for the logo change, new discs, and a slight color scheme change. I havent look lately but I hear that the latest version of Audition supposed to be very nice. but I use both CEP (on the PC) and Peak LE on the Mac.
- RevMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1True, but If you want to work with the big boys in audio you need to know PT. It's the same way in high end broadcast video and motion pictures. If need to know Avid: an over priced bloated POS. I mean who's got 10 grand for the priviledge of being able to call for tech support and minor patches/updates.
- RevMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That aint gonna happen. There is no incentive for Apple to port Logic to WinBlows.
- osxmusic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2
Wow, that was kind of fast for Digidesign, I figured we would find Bin Laden before we saw an Intel OSX protools. - happbando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1finally. it seems protools is the windows of the audio industry.
- RevMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never said that it was PPC, and the specs page that the link goes to specifically says in bullet 2 of paragraph 1:
- These installers require an Intel-based Mac to run. They will not work on a PowerPC-based Mac. - the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2yeah, that could end in confusion for a few misinformed consumers. A UB would be alot nicer i agree.
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2did they tick the wrong box within xcode, or are they using somthing else?
- justinvt, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Too bad ProTools blows, but I still use it, because I'm a sucker
- sadmancomputer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree that Pro tools lacks in the music creation department, but as for ease of use and support it is the best choice for recording and especially editing situations such as film and television. My day job is sound effects editing and there I use PT but at night I come home and make music with Live and Logic. You just have to pick what suits you
- TeleCarlos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well, at least is a recording related post...
Almost went for the ProTools/M-audio interface but will get Presonus Inspire instead. Reason 3 is at $199 for students. Will go for Logic Express at later date. Never have used PT, hopefully never will! - jamief, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah it's the Aldus PageMaker of digital music, or perhaps the Quark Xpress of digital music, since Quark have the same legendary vendor-that-hates-its-customers issues.
They're stuck in the mid 1990s. If you encounter their software or (shudder) gear, offer to take it to a museum so they can see what they've been missing in the digital music world. - turtleJP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Logic is more for Electronic than "band" use from what I can get at.
- milkfilk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Say you have two soundcards in your PC. You hook up a microphone to each one. You take a microphone, your friend takes a microphon. Can you bind soundcards together in Windows to record you screaming and your friend hitting a washboard? Can you create a grouping of soundcards? AFAIK, you can't. OSX can in 10.4, with aggregate devices, in System Preferences.
My OS-war care glass is empty. \_/ - jamief, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>It is said that Adobe has literally hundreds of thousands of lines of code in Photoshop that havent been changed since PS3.
And this is a bad thing why? If it works, leave it the heck alone... do we really need Adobe to rewrite the Blur filter or the BMP export code every time they do a new release? Fiddling with working code is just asking for bugs to crop up that require additional fiddling to fix. As for a "new codebase", that's BAD BAD BAD. Yes please let's take this software that's fast, reliable, has well understood APIs that plugins use, and throw it away so we can start over. I doubt Adobe would be that stupid.
That's why Joel Spoksly calls that "the single worst strategic mistake that any software company can make":
http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000069.html
Combine that with "Good Software Takes Ten Years" ( http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000017.html ) and the prospect of taking category-owning, mature code and throwing it out just for the fun of it is preposterous. The cost would be staggering, it would take years and years... even Microsoft can't pull off that sort of feat with Vista, and they've got all the money in the world and a captive customer base who'll bitch, but will still end up buying whatever they ship whenever they eventually ship it. - denisflorent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Editing : Wavelab RULEZ !
- johnfowles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2At last... I sold my Digidesign 002 because they weren't updating it quick enough!
- konstratos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Who gives a crap. Go Logic!
- goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Cakewalk aka Sonar is better then pro tools :)!
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5GIYF.
- boolean, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4what is ProTools? no explanations were given in that link.
- djnick, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2now if they could only make protools for pc
