- monkeybutler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15And how many people will switch from Cingular a year later because they realize that a bad service will always suck regardless of how cool the phone is.
- gronne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I actually just recently sold a smart phone because I didn't use the advanced features that much and didn't like feeling like I had to baby the thing because it was so expensive -- so I don't think I'll get the iPhone. It looks very cool but I like to just put my phone in my pocket and not worry about it.
I've got a hard case for both my Razr & Nano so I can pretty much play football and not damage either nor know they are even in my pocket. - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8They should've just made GSM and CDMA version and sold it at the Apple store only. Screw the cellular companies. Apple had a real chance here to take power away from these companies and dropped the ball. They would guarantee much more than 1% marketshare had they done that, even if it meant sacrificing their feature of "visual voice mail."
- Bravocowboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11There's more reasons yea or nay to get the phone. What about a: "Wait for version 2.0" option?
- marshall007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Not a chance.
That much money for 4 GB of mem. No way. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I'm perplexed by people's "Cingular is crap" comments. Have you tried any of the other carriers? I've been with both Sprint and Verizon before moving to AT&T (now Cingular), and trust me, they're all crappy in their own ways.
I found Sprint to be the worst of the worst for customer service - randomly miscalculating my bills, erasing features from my plan or adding ones I had never ordered, failing to process credits to my account, all the usual screwups. Cingular has their bad points, but to be fair, for the past few months, they've been much easier to reach and somehow even a bit nicer once you do get through.
The main thing you should worry about is the network. Verizon is supposed to have the best, with no dropped calls, etc., but again, it's been years since I had trouble with Cingular's network. I used to have dropped calls all the time, now the only time that happens is on long calls on lonely stretches of highway, say if I'm driving in some remote part of the countryside in Pennsylvania or something.
Verizon might have a faster data network with EV-DO, but I'm not willing to have a CDMA phone just to get it. I like knowing that I can take my GSM phone to Europe or Asia and just pop in a different SIM card. The only thing I need high speed data for is email and web, and where I live, Wi-Fi is everywhere.
If you don't want to have Cingular as a provider, just buy the phone from them and cancel your contract. They'll charge you an early termination fee, which is basically the amount they were discounting the phone for you. It means you'll spend an extra $175, but then you can go use T-Mobile, or sell it to someone in the UK or Thailand or wherever. - skored, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Cingular in New York is dog ***** but it is the iPhone we're talking about... I wish they had teamed up with Verizon then it would have been the biggest no-brainer ever,
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Never trust a girlfriend's opinion on a cell phone company!
- AzraelRenegades, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I won't get one for the same reason I'm not getting a PS3. $500-600 is simply too much money for them.
- gronne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah, I guess. The big question for me is if people will buy the "Cingular iPhone" rather than another version.
- friend18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There should be an "I already have cingular" option.
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5What about you gronne?
I won't just because I would hate to be part of the "apple" crowd. - iching, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3
I had At&t - hated them- numerous roaming and billing problems also contract problems
I had MCI-WorldCom.- hated them ditto (remember them?)
I had Verizon- hated them- ditto
I had Cingular - hated them- ditto (although when they first started they were pretty fair)
I love the new phone and think it will change the way phones are thought of
but for what I need and use a phone for these days
I can't justify a cell phone contract, I am pay as you as cheaply as I can with no contract.
Now if it was a VOIP phone also and or if someone would give me one......
BTW the apple phone is made of a patented zirconium industrial crystal casing which
hopefully should hold up to a lot of abuse from what I read about the applications of the substance.
The advance of flash memory development in recent months will make this phone truly amazing later. - sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Never, hopefully they'll strike a deal with T-mobile they have great coverage in my area and the best customer service of any company I've ever delt with over the phone.
- shirosamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Personally I think Cingular can screw off. I'm not going to be forced into switching to a carrier I don't want just to get an iPhone. Apple won't get my money until they contract with more service providers (Verizon would be a smart choice..).
- UCFMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm already a Cingular customer; they've never given me any serious problems. Don't know if I'll upgrade to the iPhone though- it's pretty pricey for a cell phone. And I use my phone mostly for calls, so the RAZR works fine for me.
- foofightrs777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ drunturkey
At least here in NJ its the otherway around..I've had Verizon, TMO, and Cingular. Out of the 3 Verizon has had the widest network coverage and best call quality. Now, if only their phones werent all locked up and they weren't such asses to deal with.
Yeah, I know Verizon isnt GSM but its about whether it works or not. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're right - if all you want is a phone that can make calls, there's no point at all to getting the iPhone. This first model is for someone like myself, a Treo owner who was about to buy a new smartphone anyway.
I was looking at the Sony Ericsson P990i and the Fujitsu LOOX T830. The P990 is around $650, and the Fujitsu is over $800. Those are unlocked prices, but Cingular doesn't sell either one, so I have to go with unlocked.
For me, someone planning to stay with Cingular anyway, $599 is a bargain. If I just wanted a phone, though, I'd do what you're doing and stick with a RAZR or something like that. - jbella, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I doubt they will ever go to verizon and CDMA... Steve Jobs said himself that they are commited to the GSM path.. which makes sense.
- ra3or, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Verizon is a horrible company, I am glad they did not team up with them. Same feelings for sprint. I have sprint currently and will switch to Cingular.
- edtree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I voted "No. I might buy the phone when it's available with my current carrier." iPhone is merely one of several options. That's not the Absolute Ring.
- TheBullMarket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Im sorry but apple straight ***** up on the iPhone carrier (excuse the language), but cutting out 54 million Verizon subscribers alone? Where was the logic in that? Are we going to hear about some shady Cingular Apple deal that went down now? Probably not but this move made no sense aside from all the carriers wanted the iPhone exclusively and Cingular made the best deal. Either way it was very anti-apple, it was more of a Microsoft move. I'm gunna wait for the second version of the iPhone just like I waited for the 3G iPod. Atleast by then there might be less issues or bugs and Ill be out of my Verizon contract... but do I really want to go back to Cingular? Nope.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The only way I'd get a iPhone is if it were given to me, and I certainly wouldn't switch providers especially if it required a contract. It's just not worth it to me.
So I guess my choice is "I don't plant (sic) to buy the iPhone." - paulieb13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wasn't there copyright law passed that allows people to use which ever phone they wish with their current providers?
http://www.treocentral.com/content/Stories/991-1.htm - ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I live in NYC, and Cingular kept crapping out. The final month I had them, I couldn't make a call from home that wouldn't get dropped within 10 minutes. People had a hard time hearing me. This was with two Razrs and a Samsung D-500. In the end I gave up and switched to Verizon. Never had a reception problem with Verizon since, plus I even get decent reception while waiting in most subway stations.
PS: Cingular Edge was also craptastic. Verizon's EVDO is at least 5 time faster and far more responsive. I can download 2mbps with Verizon anywhere in the city. Cingular's Edge felt like 128kbps ISDN. - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or just wait a week until independent retailers start unlocking them and selling them on eBay. I can easily see them going for over $1,000 though.
- Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Could service be dependant on phones? I mean, not all phones can be created equal in quality. It seems the only people who complain about any of the carriers are the ones that have received the free phone offer.
I've always paid for what I thought were good quality phones and have had cingular for 6 years now, never had a dropped call or bad customer service with them. Ever. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The should REALLY sell it unlocked. The just cut off a good percentage of potential buyers by teaming up with Cingular.
- Dash-2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You really need the option for, "I already have Cingular"
I was disappointed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How will you change the SIM if say the back of the phone is unopenable (like iPods)?
- sporkmonger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's supposed to be locked to Cingular as part of the deal between Apple and Cingular. No surprise there, but quite unfortunate.
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My Cingular 2YR contract ran out last May. I'm using Cingular Go Wireless with my Sony Ericsson currently in anticipation like this. In June, I'll get the 8G iPhone and renew my contract with Cingular.
A SmartPhone with Mac OS X is a dream to have. - Cronus6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm already a (happy!) Cingular customer... There's not a chance in hell I'm buying a iPhone.
I smartphone without a sliding qwerty keyboard isn't very "smart". - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good point. According to the NY Times (http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/01/11/the-ultimate-iphone-frequently-asked-questions/), the phone will not work on any network but Cingular, but with that law, it would HAVE to?
- Firehed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Well my contract with Verizon expired a couple of weeks ago, and I'm avoiding getting a new phone for this reason. I couldn't possibly imagine Cingular being worse than Verizon is, especially if Apple's involved. So yes, I will switch, but I'm already out of contract so it's not as big of a deal as it could be otherwise. TBH, I think with its WiFi capabilities, I won't need the network too often (especially if some iPhone Skype is released).
- drunkturkey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4What other GSM service in the US is better than Cingular? I've had them for 6 years now (AT&T > Cingular and now back to AT&T), and have never had a customer server problem with them. Plus, my service seems better - my wife has verizon and drops calls all the time while I keep talking away.
- orbitalpunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1is the iPhone Unlocked? has that been stated anywhere? would it be possible to purchase it then and then cancel and pay the fee and put a sim card in from t-mobile?
- adc86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Whoa. Pollcode was correct! That was lots of fun!
- badapplestudio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would not take AT&T for anything. They destroy any company they touch. They were horrible in cable. They were horrible with phone. And they support NSA wiretapping. I've used Sprint, Nextel, Metro PCS, Verizon and now T-Mobile. T-mobile has been the best so far. Sprint & Verizon tie for worst. Verizon may soon take that title because they took $1000 from me for a deposit on an account. I canceled my service to go to T-mobile. They charged me a $175 termination fee and they say I never paid a deposit. I still have the receipt from the store which I sent a copy to them. They still won't give me back my deposit and now I am going to have to sue them.
(BY THE WAY, ANY LAWYERS OUT THERE WHO ARE EXPERIENCED IN GOING UP AGAINST BIG COMPANIES LIKE THIS, PLEASE POST ON THIS THREAD. AS WELL AS ANYONE INTERESTED IN A CLASS ACTION VERIZON SUIT) - weird0science, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just wait until somebody ports ipodlinux or rockbox to it. Then, all is well.
- dwordenjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wouldn't take an iPhone for free if it meant I had to switch to Cingular.
- Detritus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Cingular is crap here in Chicagoland too. EDGE is so spotty it is a joke. This is a $600 cutting-edge phone and they teamed up with the oldest tech in the industry? I'm with you... when this is on Verizon with EV-DO, I'm in.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@drunkturkey
Cingular IS AT&T - TheBullMarket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@paulieb13
That would be nice if all phones worked on the same network, Verizon doesn't use SIM cards. - leodavinci0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I probably will, my contract with alltel expires this summer. But I want to be able to play with it first, see how responsive and intuitive the UI is before I set myself on it. My girlfriend has Cingular and thinks they're not bad actually. Personally I like what I've seen so far, except the price (ouch).
