- Braingoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"The alert comes after a 32 year-old Australian woman was knocked off her bicycle and killed in London."
Man that car must have hit her really hard. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"It was unusual to see people using walkmans on bikes and the reason is the iPod can store 400 to 500 songs"
Last I checked, my iPod could hold 7,500 songs (albeit at a low bitrate, but still.)
"He said people were misjudging the risks of listening to music and commuting: "You don't get onto your house roof and stand on your hands. You're taking a huge risk," he said. "People have just got to take some responsibility.""
What does standing upside down on the roof have to do with listening to music?
While I'll agree that its a bad idea to listen to music while riding, this guy is just stupid. - dv8withn8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh Darwin, your spirit is still with us.
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As a Hog rider that wears a helmet, I can tell you that you can and have to learn how to drive a moving vehicle, be it a bicycle or motorcycle, you can -learn- to not rely on your hearing. Ask any biker.
This article is idiotic. As other's have mentioned, the deaf can drive just fine, too. - brutimus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just get annoyed that everything is "iPod". I've got nothing against apple or anything, but lets at least just generalize the terminology - mp3 player, or just, "headphones".
- schrags, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ill just use a Dell DJ instead.... seriously, i frekin hate people that use ipod as the name for an "mp3 player".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, you shouldn't listen to music while riding your bicycle because you're likely to get killed by the careless idiot listening to music driving his car.
- moisie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I read about this in the Telegraph, they mentioned the iPod about 3 times as if the iPod is the only one that's dangerous. Of course the article probably wouldn't have been as catchy if it had been a sony bean or something.
- rubicante, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope everyone who listens to music while biking or running or walking dies! Serves them right! Natural selection! Yea!
/seriously - Norante, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Please, do not interfere with natural selection. Thanks.
- Chris_F, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If they're on the road, no kidding.
- papaia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nothing about my Creative MuVo - I should be OK with drive-by-listening
- pt4117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So then are deaf people not allowed to drive/ride? They can't hear what's going on either. I think that they are making too big a deal of this. If you know how to ride you should be fine in the streets.
If you ride in a straight line, between parked cars and moving ones, it doesn't really matter what's coming up behind you. Just don't swerve or break your line w/o looking to make sure that it's clear.
The only time I really can't wear them is if I'm on a bike path. Then I want to be more curteous, and if I hear someone coming up behind me I'll give them some extra room to pass. - sketchstudios, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if anyones familar with george carlin, in one of his comedy stand up specials he explains to us about these "dumb" people. and he actually encourages them to go about their life in their own stupid way, that way we can weed out the population of these crazy less intelligent people. -- people, dont listen to your ipod when on your bike. and while were on the subject, get off the damn cell phone in the car too.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If we keep alerting stupid people of dangers then we are going to affect the overall evolution of the human population.
yes, that's right kids "evolution", it's real and a fact. - recursive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1She wasn't even listening to the ipod. Get the facts.

Scroll to the bottom. - hemidurango, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2jokerswild: Have you ever participated in any sort of complex physical activity like snow/skate boarding? Never mind, I can answer my own question. Obviously NO.
Is the boarder calculating the angles in the middle of the run? Perhaps he's trying to work out his velocity each time he crosses the flat? Hey, here's some mental excercise for you that you probably can't do while listening to music, try looking up the word "Kinesthesia". And while you're at it, you can think about the skaters who skate to horribly distracting music, instead of working out the precise angles of thier skate blades in relationship to each other. (gasp!)
Sorry folks but limiting one's ability to hear has nearly zero effect on street cyccling safety. If you cannot SEE the vehicles coming from behind you by using a helmet or cycle mounted mirror, or turning your head, how is hearing the vehicle approach going to help you? You have to always be looking, always be aware. Between a helmet and/or wind noise, you are lucky to tell the difference between a car and a semi, much less pinpoint it's location by sound alone. Left lane? Right lane? On the paved shoulder, directly behind, going to run you down? I'm raising the flag on a serious lack of reasoned thought by all concerned! (except me, of course) ;-P - konaflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I listen to my ipod everytime I ride to work. My headphones block a lot of ambient noise but that just means I have to pay attention. Common sense, pay attention. You don't hear about deaf people getting nailed every day do you?
- knoppy44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what about if you have the volume down, and you can still here noise??
- jcpiercy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A Girl was Killed the other night in my hometown , was wearing her Ipod

Who I must be some l33t h4x0r because I've managed to get around 2,000 on mine. =) - nerdherder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@zenscope
some 16 year olds are excellent drivers, they just need to make the driving test harder to weed out the morons - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Please, do not interfere with natural selection. Thanks."
I second that, this should be put in the next publishing of 'The Darwin Awards'. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> isnt it so ***** gay how people now refer to music players
> as ipod? let me go shoot my ***** self
You will be missed. - 0Troy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This just in: "Cyclists should pay attention when riding on the streets unless they have a death wish"
You could really just swap out iPOD with any other distraction. Cell phones, hot chicks walking by, sneezing... Oh, they should come out about that whole sneezing thing. That s*** is dangerous... - NewEvolution, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Clearly we need to build accelerometers into our MP3 players. Speed > walking = low enough volume to hear ambient sounds.
In other news, it's outright illegal to wear headphones while driving. I would figure the same regulations apply to cycling, as they need to follow the same "rules of the road" and all that. - NtroP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iPod?
Just to hazzard a guess, I'd say it's pretty similar for ANY MP3 player. ...or DiscMan, or Walkman, or... anything that screams into your ears louder than ambient traffic noises.
NO! Let's pick on the iPod.
C'mon people! Take some personal responsibility and use some common sense for once.
Hey, d'ya think it might be dangerous for me to watch a movie on my Video iPod while riding a bike? Someone better warn me - I don't think I can figure that out for myself. Maybe I should sue Apple for not warning me about that. Hey, sounds like Class Action (tm) to me. - zenscope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so cyclists are suddenly in full control of their own lives (by not using headphones) when a car is barreling down on them from behind?? that makes zero sense. volume control? drivers who can see what's in front of them? this is a ridiculous article... once again, a blanket statement from the police to protect everyone.
i've got a better idea. stop giving 16 year olds the ability to drive. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The thing they are not mentioning is that in most cases you shouldn't listen to headphones while you are walking either. I don't understand why people are so anxious to lower their awareness of their surroundings.
- buryme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, what passes for news these days...wow.
- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First of all the guy in the Olympics should be able to do whatever he wants. He's obviously good enough to get there, if the iPod helps him, why not let him use it?
Second this is just stupid. You should obviously be aware of your surroundings when you are traveling around cars. However, I see no problem with listening to the iPod if you can still hear the cars coming up behind you. - Dragonis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why add regulations? Just like the law that says Bike Helmets are mandatory... Don't force dumb adults to do smart things. It 's a way of thinning the herd.
- ha$$le, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0even if you can hear the car coming up behind you what good will that do? It's not going to stop the car from hitting you if the driver isn't paying attention. By the time you actually hear the car, it is right on your ass or passing anyways, ipod or no...
- wjglenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>yet there are people who buy iPods for this exact purpose.
All MP3 players are iPods.
All adhesive bandages are Band-Aids.
All photocopies are Xeroxes.
I guess we might as well get used to it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0zero_tek:
Get off the sidewalk, and you won't have a problem. - TheDarkTipper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This reminds me of when my friend said "Why did you get an iPod, mp3 players are better." I responded "An iPod is an mp3 player god dammit!" I hate when people act so dumb.

"The alert comes after a 32 year-old Australian woman was knocked off her bicycle and killed in London."
Man that car must have hit her really hard.
muhahhahahhaahahhaaaaaaaaaaa - aurifex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's official. Any portable audio device will henceforth be known as an "iPod".
Excuse me while I go hang myself. - theanticrust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ahh, I'm a cyclist and use my ipod when I cycle. Yet I wear a helmet, use standard earbuds (I've got a pair of in-ears that I don't use when riding... the ER-4s) and keep the volume low enough so I can hear traffic noise.
Just don't be an idiot and crank the music so you can't hear. It's dangerous enough riding around the city even without an ipod. - ha$$le, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ipods aren't what are killing bicyclists on the streets. It's the ***** ***** drivers who don't pay attention while they are driving that kill cyclists.
I have been commuting by bike every dayfor years and I am almost hit on a weekly basis. I have even almost been hit by some dumb pig cop zooming past me on a residential street. If it wasn't for my super ninja skills and lightning fast reflexes I would probably be dead. These dumb asses cut us off, swerve into our bike lanes and act beligerent and rev their engines and honk among other careless, obnoxious *****. - Kamatz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about only one earpiece? I needs my Stars, man.
- davidleeroth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i digg this because its on an aussie server.
- antimattr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i haven't been cycling with my portable audio device (read: yes, there are other devices out there), but i intend to this summer. at present, i drive and listen to my music through earbuds. however, i use jabra eargels for both the left and right earbuds. i learned of these gems from the iaudio m3 forums, and if i weren't so lazy, i'd look up the original comment to give credit where it is due. anyway, these eargels are intended for cell phone headsets (used while driving) and have a channel in them that admits ambient sounds. in particular, it doesn't attenuate high frequency noise noticeably (i.e., sirens, traffic noise, etc.). when i start it up in the car i make sure i can hear a light finger snap and i'm good to go. i was skeptical about these eargels when i first got them, but i bought the variety pack (three for each ear in different sizes), found the right size, and haven't taken them off since.
there are my thoughts. - diggzzzzzzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only time I kissed the sidewalk was while I was listening to my ipod. This story is absolutely on target. Now when I'm listening to my archos, I don't crash unless I'm also trying to check my email.
- altjeringa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could have sworn it was illegal to wear headphones at all while cycling and driving. At least in California. But then everything is illegal here.
- mianos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0She walked in front of a garbage truck and they only things to blame were the ipod and god.
I'm guessing no one here as ever driven in a the 2006 7 series BMW? You can't hear a thing outside.
You know what's much more likely to kill you, heart disease. That's from eating too much and not doing an excercise, i.e. not riding a bike. If listening to music makes you more likely to go for a fast work or ride a bike then you are going to save more lives that banning people who walk in front of a garbage truck from listening to ipods. - JokersWild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hemidurango:
I am an avid skier (I have never snowboarded however).
If I am skiing recreationally (ie just goofing around, enjoying the day, whatever) then music dramatically increases the enjoyment of the experience.
If I am racing a friend or attempting to improve my technique or hitting a lot of jumps, etc. then music is an ABSOLUTE nuisance. I can't concentrate and I bite it. You may do better in that environment. I do not.
Heck, if I'm driving and I get lost or am not sure where I'm going, I turn the music down there too. IT HELPS ME CONCENTRATE.
You must just be a better person. How wonderful it must be to be you. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just like when driving a car, I like to be able to hear. I'm one of those people who drives with the windows down in the spring as soon as it hits 40-50 degrees, it makes me feel much safer when I can hear what's going on around me
- HeroicLife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh please. I got a Dell DJ to listen to while I bike five months ago, and I've been fine. I don't listen to it on crowded streets, but it's fine on country roads, parks, and the like.
