- amsoell, on 04/20/2009, -4/+38It had better be really, really fast. I'm on the verge of abandoning them for VMWare Fusion like the rest of the world. If Parallels locks up my new iMac one more time, I'm done.
- kidcodea, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29what u really wanted to write in order to look smart would be "get a slower dog".
- soupyc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Windows 3K Server?
John Titor, is that you? - djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Seconded. When I'm able to go walk the dog while Parallels is booting, there's a problem.
- codyman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15so really really fast and really really good looking? derek zoolander would be pleased...
- chazzy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I switched to VMware and haven't looked back. I just didn't want to deal with the lockups anymore. Faster, too, but a few less features. Easier shared folder system is one feature that I miss in Parallels. And it requires a click to activate the window, so Cmd-Tab is a little harder. I don't use Unity much. Didn't really use Coherence much, either, though.
- VSack, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I am the owner of a license for both Parallels 2.0 and VMWare Fusion.
I stopped using Parallels when they went to 3.0. Normally, I would have stuck around while they worked out the kinks...From a pocketbook standpoint, I would even have been willing to shell out extra cash for a new version.
I decided to switch to Fusion due to issues surrounding the release of the latest commercial version. The community threw a FIT when 3.0 was released because of the upgrade costs. Many, many avid supporters of Parallels were crestfallen when it was announced that for 3D support you would need to pay an upgrade fee...when support had specifically stated otherwise.
I could have, and would have purchased it. What I couldn't allow was for the company, no matter how big or how small, to be duplicitous. I don't need the 3D support on my VMs, but there were many people who willingly accepted the lack of support on the forums for their problems, the constant hiccups and memory devouring, and other pratfalls because they believed in the product.
It is because of this that I switched. I understand that I am one person, but I hope that my purchasing decisions help to shape the influence of product delivery on expectations and promises. Parallels dropped the ball big time by choosing a money grab on their existing customer base than to understand that the Apple community is growing by leaps and bounds....the initial shock troops that they had on the ground could have been their bread and butter through recommendations and new user support...but they turned their back on us. - Ranneko, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Anyone know how the new version compares to VMWare in speed?
- temp444, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Used Parallels for 8mths, stop using it in June when I moved to VMware Fusion. Could be happier, Fusion is faster, more stable and doesnt suffer from long pauses like Parallels does.
Running Win3K server with VS2005, SQL Server 2005, etc ... runs so much better on Fusion. Parallels good for word processing or games.
Agree that 2GB is the sweet point for both. Remember dont allocate like 1gig to VM itself, runs better is OSX handles memory allocation above and beyond. - hypher, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Wow... it sounds like everyone here has had better luck with VMWare. I was understand the impression that Parallels was better on just about every front. Maybe not. I personally have not used VMWare but I've had a really great experience with Parallels and have no problems. Does VMWare have something like coherence? For me, thats the most attractive thing in Parallels hands down.
- counterplex, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I switched to vmware fusion because it actually successfully worked with my bootcamp partition. Parallels started installing its tools but after an overnight session it still hadn't managed to properly install them. Vmware fusion only took an hour - still long but bearable.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8lol you're a ***** amirite?
- Ranneko, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You mean the ones talking about how the older version is slow? Yeah I already knew that, thanks.
- Blizaine, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8it just keeps getting better and better. The mirrored folders is very useful.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8what you really wanted to write in order to look smart would be "you".
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7http://digg.com/users/newAccount/friends/befriended - "No one has added this person as a friend yet."
Now that can't *possibly* be right, can it? I mean you seem so ...normal... and everything. - HerrEisenheim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It's an experimental feature, the same as it is in VMWare Fusion. The difference is that Parallels sells experimental features to you and treats them like they are stable. VMWare is up front about it.
- ThatsUnpossible, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Seriously, the 3.0 version DOES NOT WORK with the new iMac (aluminum), if you enable direct3d support at least. It locks up the entire mac. I emailed their support department, and they seem to have never even heard of this problem, even though people are complaining a lot about it in their forums.
- akf2000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5heh that reference (John Titor) took me way back, I need to go re-read all that nuttiness again.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Please see every single comment above you.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You IDIOT! How are they supposed to learn to read when they even get in the building?
- cave, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6The MBP is the best laptop out there right now. If you need windows, just boot directly into it. Or do a little research and use comparable mac apps like Journler and iSync.
- paradexes, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Lets see how does Parallels compare to say Windows in terms of development models and marketing.
Version updates with lots of features= check
Lots of new bugs that crash your system without having fixed the previous versions bugs = check
Massive incompatibility issues with software =check
Easy to break networking = check (FYI parallels subverts your Mac OSX network interface and proxies it thru its Virtual nic rather than using a separate interface that uses the host connection) This is the feature that seems to crash the most in my own experience with Parallels.
Crappy to non-existent 64bit support = check
Over promise under deliver= check
Lotsa hype little substance = check - OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I don't get it. Parallels 2.x runs like a champ for me. Although I'm running win2K not XP (or Vista! omg)
This might make my coworkers at VMWare cringe but I prefer Parallels, because it seems to be more compatible with various "strange" OSes than Fusion is. Fusion is probably the better product for running Vista though, but I don't really use Windows other than to occasionally test my cross compiled apps on win2k to see if the code works well enough to commit to svn/cvs/perforce/git. - dgp1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Probably. Parallels are con-artists, releasing a paid update (3.0) what, like six months after I bought my "pre-order" key? ***** won't get any more of my money.
Also, why the hell does each iteration get slower than the last? The first or second build I ever had was the fastest I ever used. It's been all downhill since then. - ncr100, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6VMWare Fusion works like a charm. Turn on "Unity" and u can drag/drop...so not as ez as Parallels. -a happy customer
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Woah WOAH! Lets not get carried away here! Keep it stable... XP man.
- felchdonkey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5In VMWare, it's called "Unity." When I'm running VMWare in Unity mode, all my Windows apps behave as if they were Mac apps. Expose works with them, they minimize to the dock, overlap normally, all that.
I tried Boot Camp (got sick of restarting just to run one app), and Parallels (too many headaches.) VMWare just works easiest for me, and it's fast. - DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yeah, Fusion has been great and this is coming from someone who paid for Parallels at the beginning. VMware just has better QC and customer support.
- lalalalamppost, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I switched to VMWare Fusion. Haven't looked back. The great thing about VMWare is that they're a very established and competent company in VM technology, and it shows. (I had good luck with VMWare's workstation product on Linux a few years back so I wasn't surprised with the solidness of their Mac offering.) Also, you might want to look at where the software you're letting run at the lowest level in your computer is being written...
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -0/+32gb of ram and you'll be fine. Vista and OS X coexist nicely in cohesive mode. With 1gb, slow as molasses as vista and os x are both memory hogs.
- HappyPig, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Yes, Unity is the VMWare equivalent of Coherence. I bought both Parallels and Fusion and used Parallels for six months before trying Fusion, and I've grudingly had to admit I should have just gone with Fusion in the first place.
- nullx42, on 10/10/2007, -7/+10Get a faster dog
- seanneko, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3From a VMWare Fusion user, does Parallels 3.0 have the bug* where overlapping applications in Windows will be drawn incorrectly when using Expose? That's really my only criticism of Fusion - otherwise it does exactly what I want and expect.
* Yes, I know that it's a technical limitation more than a bug, but there are ways to fix it. - Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If people are comparing technologies, I'll throw in that Virtual Box ( http://www.virtualbox.org/ ) is a nice choice. It's free, faster than vmware (in my limited test cases) and now sports a coherence mode.
- tucsonwc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I too went out and bought VMWare Fusion. I kept finding that Parallels was locking up on my MacPro. :(
- mateo60, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2SAME HERE! It's been killing me lately.
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5People still use Parallels? Hell, the VMWare Fusion Beta was better than the Parallels "retail" product. No one knows memory management for VMs better than VMWare. Plus, VMWare Fusion actually works with Ubuntu from the get-go. Even installing VMWare Tools is done with little effort. With VMWare you pay for a polished, stable product. With Parallels you are still paying for a beta product.
- kevnaca, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Same here, I just tested it out yesterday. It is much faster than before but I'm not quite ready to switch from VMware Fusion. Fusion feels so much more robust than Parallels.
- Wander, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Just wondering if new keys are required?
- Nysul, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5The problem isn't the ram, it is that when idle it eats up 20% of the CPU, draining the battery on my macbook pro. I'm seriously considering just returning the mac and getting a lenovo x61 tablet. I love os x, but the majority of aps I use (onenote, activ sync, etc) are on windows, and so far it is just ending up being a hassle. (edit: I should also note vmware fusion doesn't cut it for me, as I need word 2007 to be the default doc opening program).
- BossKey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2This version is definitely a noticeably improvement in both speed and compatibility. I can't speak to Fusion because I didn't want to spend more money on virtualization products, but as of this version I'm finally happy with Parallels.
- colincornaby, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5"Coherence with Exposé" You mean like VMWare Fusion has done for months?
- websyndicate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2yea Im not looking back ever when it comes to Parallels
- dandelorey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I agree. The move to 3.0 has been nothing but pain so far. I hope this upgrade is really an improvement this time.
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Allowing windows xp/vista windows into the EXPOSE is the best feature added yet, and apparently its really fast.
I might put Vista back on my Macbook now. - jocabola, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thanks for sharing!
- temp444, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Check out there bare metal ESX Server ... astounding technology and one of the key reasons their IPO went so well.
(... I sound like a VMware salesman) - chrisxkelley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2you sir, lose.
- chrisxkelley, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It must be at least.... THREE times this size!
