- screwzluse, on 11/03/2007, -44/+322I'm not sure I see what this is supposed to imply. I mean, Microsoft is a software vendor, not hardware. If it runs better on a MacBook, whatever... It's a moot point. I guess it's funny that it runs on any hardware?
- ZenMojo, on 11/08/2007, -18/+255Pretty much just irony. Then again, for 2400 bucks, it damn well ***** better run fast. HOLY *****!
- SpectralSounds, on 11/05/2007, -58/+200"Equipped with a 2.4-GHz Core 2 Duo T7700 processor, the maximum 4GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and nVidia's new top-of-the-line notebook graphics card, the nVidia GeForce 8600M GT, our $2949 test unit set new speed records.'
Wow, I just bought a Sager NP2090 with that exact same configuration (granted with only 2 gig ram because I run XP) and it only cost me $1,410 after taxes and shipping. Not to mention the 8700m GT is Nvidias top of the line mobile GPU at the moment. Is that Mac name and color worth an extra $1,500+? I think not. - rootnik, on 11/14/2007, -30/+166In other words, $1400 is the cost of the 1 point?
- meshman, on 11/14/2007, -79/+196"The $2419 (plus the price of a copy of Windows Vista, of course) MacBook Pro's PC WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 88 beats Gateway's E-265M by a single point"
A single point. Like, if I have a dollar today and make another dollar with it tomorrow, my revenues increased 100%!!!! OMFG the Macbook is GOD'S computer!!! - hexydes, on 11/05/2007, -44/+148I'm so tired of people touting the fact that Apple's computers are so good because they can run both OS X and Windows!
You know why that is? Because unlike Apple, Microsoft didn't build in artificial controls that limit what hardware you can install it on. Stop acting like Apple is so much better, as if they somehow made it so that you could run Windows on their computers. Microsoft built their OS to work on the entire x86 platform, which Apple builds their computers on, and that is why it runs.
OS X should be able to run on any computer, because Apple's hardware is just like anyone else's. The only reason it can't is because Apple prevents you from doing so. They shouldn't be applauded, they should be derided for limiting what you can do.
P.S. I equally split my time between using Windows XP (work), OS X (work), and Ubuntu Linux (home). Keep that in mind before you call me an X hater, or a Y fanboy. - RationalAntaxia, on 11/14/2007, -19/+91Yes you can. Are you really that dumb?
- valkyries, on 11/05/2007, -14/+75so hes saying the macbook pro is faster then laptops from FalconNW and Alienware?
- mackie99, on 11/03/2007, -9/+66Ummmm...I don't think it was a dig toward M$, but against dell, hp, etc.
- HerrEisenheim, on 11/05/2007, -27/+81The name and color? No. The name, color, aluminum body, fact that it's about 70% thinner, 30% lighter, comes with 2GB SO-DIMMs instead of 1GB SO-DIMMs, has a backlight keyboard, FireWire 800, optical digital audio inputs and outputs, and comes with some decent bundled software. That's what's worth almost $1,500.
- rufo, on 11/05/2007, -11/+64Doing a full spec-by-spec price comparison, the Sager NP2090 comes out under $150 less including shipping. As HerrEisenheim mentions, the MacBook Pro is indeed 70% thinner and 30% lighter (1in MBP vs. Sager 1.7, 5.4lbs vs. 7lbs). Here's what I specced and what I used when options were not comparable:
- Display: 15.4" WSXGA+ LCD with Matte Finish Surface (1680X1050)[+$125.00] (the 15" MBP has a 1400x900 rez screen = it's subjective, but I feel 1280x800 is too low for a 15" monitor)
- Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7500 / 4MB L2 Cache, 2.20GHz, 800MHz FSB[+$55.00] (same)
- Video & Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT Graphics with 512MB DDR2 Video Memory (2x the MBP's VRAM - quite good!)
- Operating System: Genuine MS Windows® VISTA ULTIMATE 32/64-Bit Edition[+$80.00] (honestly, it's the best comparison to OS X's one edition with everything)
- Memory: 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz - 2 X 1024MB[+$60.00] (same)
- Primary Hard Disk Drive: 120GB 5400rpm SATA 150 Hard Drive[+$25.00] (same)
- Optical Drive: 8X DVD±R/RW/4X +DL Super-Multi Drive & Software (same, although the MBP's slotloads if you're into that sort of thing)
- Wireless Network Card: Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN - 802.11A/B/G/N Wireless LAN Module (close enough - MBP has 802.11n)
- Bluetooth: Internal Bluetooth Module[+$45.00] (MBP has bluetooth built-in)
- Primary Battery: Smart Li-ION Battery Pack (9 Cells) (close enough)
- MCE Remote Control: Compact Media Center Remote Control & IR Receiver, fits in Express Card slot[+$45.00] (MBP comes with remote)
- Microsoft Office: Microsoft Office 2007 Basic Edition[+$190.00] (MBP comes with iLife suite, technically if you buy iWork you can subtract about $80 from the difference)
- Warranty: Sager One Year Standard Warranty (same, although note that Apple has retail stores all over the country that can service your laptop)
Even omitting the extra software, I think the MBP is well worth it just for the size/weight improvements - I'm constantly on the move and trust me, those extra two pounds can make a real difference on your load. - zweben, on 10/30/2007, -5/+57-Hold control and click.
-Enable two finger clicking. Place two fingers on the trackpad and click.
-Plug in pretty much any USB mouse. Click the right button. - inactive, on 11/05/2007, -10/+57When is the last time they tested a $2500 Windows laptop? 5-6 months ago, when the newest ones would still be less powerful? How about they test a $2500 laptop now.
- noahhoward, on 11/05/2007, -22/+62Ah there you are, I thought we were missing some of our Winboys.
- GodJustice, on 11/01/2007, -15/+51I'm amazed by the fact that PCWorld has employed MAC fanbois. I've scrolled to a few other of the year's achievements and obviously there are conflicting statements and conflicting hardware specs. Here is Alienware achievement for the Best Gaming Performance.
"Best gaming performance: Alienware Area-51 m5750"
While the Mac achievement for "Fastest" says differently. They even identify in the details of a faster gaming performance.
"The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year--or for that matter, ever--is a Mac. Not a Dell, not a Toshiba, not even an Alienware. "
And when we look at the specs on the computers they aren't even. Mind you the specs do not include hard drive speed which is an important factor of any performance test.
Macbook: 2.4-GHz Core 2 Duo T7700 / 4096 DDR2-667 SDRAM / 1900 x 1200 / nVidia GeForce 8600M GT 256MB
Alienware: 2.33-GHz Core 2 Duo T7600 / 2048 DDR2-667 SDRAM / 1920 x 1200 / ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 256MB
Then once you look at the actual performance tests, the reason why Alienware lost isn't because it was slower. They didn't even compare the same applications and versions, other than for the gaming tests.
And the final killer. When did the tests occur?
Macbook: 9/14/2007
Alienware: 3/7/2007
Obviously, these rankings are worth crap if you try to compare computers with 6 months of difference. Buried for being inaccurate. - control98408, on 11/01/2007, -9/+45I'm sure microsoft couldn't care less if you run it on a mac. Actually they're probably happy, just like those days when every mac sold means money goes to microsoft because office is bundled in.
- dijital, on 11/01/2007, -5/+39I'm a lifelong PC power-user that just upgraded to a new MacbookPro. After years of bashing Mac users, I have to say my perspective has changed... slightly. I'm not nearly as impressed with OSX (Leopard) as I thought I'd be, but it's got some great features. I have never seen video conferencing work as well as it does via iChat. But the MacbookPro (C2D-2.4, 8600m gt, 2gb Ram) runs Vista extremely well via bootcamp. Now, I have all 3 OSs running just as they should. This truly is an impressive notebook. I upgraded from an HP dv5000t that was no slouch either. It had the dual core 2.0gHz, 2GB ram, and 7400go - but this new Macbook is not only much lighter, more refined, but much, much faster (with regard to running Vista). No complaints. I still couldn't see myself using OSX exclusively vs. Vista, but if you can have it all... why not?
edit: The 3rd OS i was referring to above is Ubuntu (Gutsy) which runs as a virtual machine inside Vista. It also runs really well and is incredibly impressive for its price tag - but still no replacement for Vista. Just my opinion. - noahhoward, on 10/30/2007, -17/+51Not really hilarious. It is kind of funny if only because anti-mac tards like to say "Macs are just overpriced PCs they don't run any better" but it is more sad than hilarious.
- eponym, on 11/01/2007, -7/+40Normally, I don't get involved in these debates. But just so we're clear:
Apple charges $700 to upgrade them from 2 GB (2 x 1 GB) to 4 GB (2 x 2) of RAM. Now, 2 2GB dims are pricey, but not that expensive. Any long-term Mac owner should be able to tell you that Apple has always heavily inflated RAM costs when you order your machine. It's always better to upgrade the ram yourself and save hundreds of dollars. So that laptop isn't really that much. - majortom1981, on 10/31/2007, -10/+43What computers did they test against? Dell has the xps 1730 with the 8700gt video card available for $2999. Also how does this compete with the inspiron 1720? Without discounts i was able to make a same spec 1720 at $2124.
So if i was going to run vista why would I get a mac book pro at $2949 when I can get a same specced dell for $2124 (even cheaper with discount coupons applied) - toxicityj, on 11/01/2007, -21/+53and at only roughly twice the price, the macbook pro blew Gateway's E-265M out of the water by a whopping one point. OH MY!
- killtherebel, on 10/31/2007, -12/+43I'm sorry, but the Macbook Pro being the fastest notebook is just not true. They review it against many laptops that are sub $1000. And they bench with beta software! Lets see some real benchmarks before we start announcing the fastest.
- inactive, on 11/03/2007, -22/+53PLUS, you get a machine that also runs a next-generation OS: OS X Leopard.
/ I'm a dead man. / - cubs2234, on 11/14/2007, -13/+43Wow. Just wow...
- R3yDigg, on 10/31/2007, -6/+35Glad you pointed it out, most people seem to forget about that pesky law of diminishing returns
- gymbrall, on 11/14/2007, -8/+32Or $2000 *more* if you choose the Eurocom D900C Phantom-X, or $500 *more* if you choose the HP Pavilion HDX or 2 points and the same price if you choose the Thinkpad...
[all prices taken from the PC World Top 10 Power Laptops list: http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,123729-page,1-c, ... - surfing, on 10/30/2007, -4/+28Did it come with a sticker for you car window though?
- inactive, on 10/30/2007, -7/+30What? You're going to pay $1500 for a Mac with "better hardware" (which is equal to other hardware) and then run Windows or Linux on it? What. the. *****?
- zeejay, on 11/01/2007, -4/+27That Dell is:
70% larger, volumentrically,
Has no DVI, let alone dual-link DVI
No FireWire 800
No camera
No optical digital audio in and out
No Gigabit ethernet
No camera
The trademark Dell boat-anchor power brick
"Same spec'ed"? Come on. If you want same-spec'ed, you'll get a lot closer via Sony or Lenovo's high end portables, not any of those Dell Charcoal turds. - inactive, on 10/30/2007, -7/+30http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2000 ...
Mac moved away from the one-button mouse with OS X. - Coffeedemon, on 10/30/2007, -7/+30Then you're stupid.
- noahhoward, on 11/03/2007, -13/+34It's supposed to imply that it runs Windows better than computers that have run windows forever perhaps?
- MxM111, on 10/30/2007, -2/+23The mouse does have two buttons!!!! You just do not see it, they are not visible, but you can press on left or on right side of the mouse like with any other mouse. Go to the store and play with it. Just do not forget to enable two finger clicking (ask store clerk if you can't figure how, but it should be easy - it is Mac OS X after all.).
- robisfunky, on 11/01/2007, -10/+30 for a mere $3,000 you, too can buy a mac and run Windows on it with great speed and....wait- huh?
- diggSJaustin, on 10/30/2007, -11/+31I don't think people pay extra for the name and color—they pay extra so they can run OS X. You probably don't think that's worth it, either, but at least understand the actual motivation involved with the purchase.
- Lou3000, on 11/03/2007, -7/+27I think this just means that it is no longer correct for potential buyers to think that Mac OS may be great, but Apple computers are underpowered and overpriced.
The point is, Apple makes good computers. For Mac or PC. - DiggLive, on 10/31/2007, -11/+31Vista is number 2 behind XP, so yes.
http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid= ... - iiBeLiEvE, on 11/01/2007, -19/+38This is foolish. You could buy a laptop FASTER than a ridiculously overpriced MacBook Pro for a grand less, preloaded with Vista, and then buy ten copies of Leopard with it, then set a bonfire with them in your backyard. OR, better yet, buy ANOTHER decently fast laptop preloaded with Vista with that spare grand. Imagine that.
- solid12345, on 10/30/2007, -2/+21Amazing how to digg users 99 cents a song is just too damn much but 2400 for a laptop is a bargain.
- rootnik, on 10/30/2007, -4/+22I'd digg this twice if I could.
- PabloMac, on 10/30/2007, -24/+42Yep. Running OS X is worth it.
- phunlee, on 11/11/2007, -1/+19Wha? People that use Macs and people that use PCs operating MS Software argue about it? What? This is the first I've heard of it buddy.
- inactive, on 10/30/2007, -3/+21Oh my, you used a dollah sign to spell Microsoft. That's so cool and really not passe or infantile at all. I keep using "open sores" as well but for some reason people don't like that.
- InfiniteNothing, on 10/30/2007, -4/+22If you're talking about the Acer Aspire that's a 15 inch screen. Apple also offers a 15 inch screen if you want to compare apples to uhhhh apples
- sockpuppets, on 10/31/2007, -13/+30Just add a second mouse button for christs sakes. It's useful. Hell, my gaming mouse has 800 buttons on it and levitates with the new beta drivers.
- jellomizer, on 11/01/2007, -7/+24Yes we know... But we also know if Apple Released OS X for all the other PCs it would kill Apple Financially. They make their money on hardware. The OS what binds it. And they less profit off of it. They tried that back in the 90's and it nearly killed them. Because if they release OS X for PC people will not be getting Macs they will be getting PCs with OS X, There will be an increase in OS X but not enough to take over Windows or to keep Apple Sustainable unless people are willing to pay $400 or so per license which I doubt they are. If Apple goes out of business so will OS X. And face it Open Source Zealots are not up to the task of keeping OS X running they will ruin it and make it work like Linux.
- sockpuppets, on 10/30/2007, -5/+22Only Lolcats can use invisible buttons.
- metapop, on 11/01/2007, -15/+31hmm, let's re-read the title...
PC World: Macbook Pro is the "Fastest Windows Vista Laptop" of 2007
yep, sounds conclusive. and- i think you meant "than", not "then". - traphik, on 11/01/2007, -10/+26This comment was made on MacBook Pro running Windows Vista; doesn't seem any faster...
I was never to good at sarcasm. - Dumbledorito, on 10/30/2007, -19/+35Another satisfied Vista user here. And what do you mean "still?"
