- CryingWolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The problem with this is you only see other networks you don't see cordless phones, baby monitors, RF controllers, garage door openers etc... I live in an apartment with literally over 200 garages, each with their own remote opener. Every resident gets a garage with an opener. And there are a few times during the day I get bumped off my wireless connection. I see at least 8-10 other wireless networks in my complex. This can make it pretty rough to play on any channel. I have played with my channels and have found the lower ones with no networks near them are pretty bad. I would love to get a RF meter and see how bad the frequency's at the lower channels are.
- dfunct, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Wow a seriously well written guide, I'm jealous!
- ahknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's why at the end of the article it talks about checking noise levels....
- istumbler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm also jealous and I *wrote* iStumbler. This iis a great writeup, the manual should be this helpful ;)
- Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+46 is the default on most routers.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I found six other networks in my neighborhood, and we were ALL using Channel 6..wtf??? Now I'm on Channel 1 by myself..is 6 the default for all routers? (I see Linksys, Netgear, and Dlink(?) I think)
- easy4lif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In my nieghborhood I was the first with a wireless base station and just set it to the default channel. (11 on my airport extreme) Now, Theres like 5 that my macbook can see and all of them are on the same channel like me. I just read this and moved over to channel 3 and I did get a slight increase in signel strenght
- Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Just do what I do.
Connect to all of your neighbor's networks and change their router settings so they are all on channel 1. Then go set yours to channel 11(or as far from 1 as you can get). - aoe2bug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Just change it yourself, you lazy bastard :). Oh don't worry, he won't mind. Or notice, if he's anything like my neighbors.
- ahknight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3DOWNGRADE the firmware. The newer ones are the ones with the problems. Intermittantly the base station will seize in certain circumstances. Going back to an earlier revision of 5.x solves it for those few seeing it. The Apple Discussion boards have the specifics.
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Pretty cool article... It helps me a lot. Now i'll go tell my neighborhood to change it's wi-fi to channel 11, 'cause i get his signal very low... =P
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, the linksys units are cool. In actual testing, though, they performed just as well as the Apple one.
And the AirPort Express has printer sharing, and AirTunes. - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1With the linux firmware you can do all sorts of cool things. Turn up the power on the wifi to increase range, advanced firewall features. All this on a $60 router with a free upgrade. There was an article about this on digg about a month ago, I suggest you check it out.
- nato64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Three networks were on Channel 11, now I'm on Channel 6 and noticed a huge difference! :)
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's obvious to me (I'm another software developer - written some code for kismac), but still a nice guide. Dugg.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The unit has messed up due to either a firmware bug, or a power disturbance. Upgrade the firmware, or put the unit on a filtered powerpoint. My Airport Express is rock solid.
- jackmeyhauffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone have any input on why airport extreme base stations sometimes become completely unresponsive and need to be restarted? Is this also a result of RF interference?
- hrdcregmer808, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4something nice to look over at, you can get better wifi w00t!!
- spoonthriller, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I keep getting slow loading pages and error messages like " Bad Server Response". I don't like it and I won't put up with it. When I get home I am going to change the channel of my base station. If that doesn't work I am going to lock myself in my room, and eat bugs all day.I already have installed an antenna and have configured an Airport Express to extend my signal range. ( now that's a laugh.) I probably shortened the range by two feet.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Just get a real router. It might not be white, but it will work a hell of a lot better. I recommend one of the linksys models with the upgradable linux firmware.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1"Huh, and I thought Apple was perfect, so there's like nothing to optimize, ya know?"
Dooraque is greeting TROLLS and FANBOYS alike! - afruff23, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Finally!!! Now, I can configure my overpriced UFO!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0Cool
http://www.theshadowsun.net - Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4I wish they would just call it a router.
- akira117, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3How about never buy one!
