Optimized Firefox 2.0 for G4, G5, and Intel Macs released
Key word: Optimized - neilio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20allanpat - I built these using a bunch of gcc flags that optimized the code for the specific CPU. It's not going to load pages radically faster, but the launch times and UI should be noticeably springier.
Damn, my server is getting crushed. Sorry folks - I'll fix this ASAP. :( - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22I'm going to digg this because it's a good application that didn't require a public talent contest to be created.
- kyc050564, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Nice. Aqua widgets!
- wilwheaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hey, thanks for doing this, man. Behold, the power of open source.
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Don't feed the trolls.
- neilio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Ladies and gentlemen, please use this link for now:
http://www.mobookie.com/firefox/firefox20.html - Foma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@TomP:
Then change the icon back to the original. Do a command-i on Firefox.app, click on the icon, copy it with command-c, then command-i BonEcho.app, click on its icon and paste the official Firefox icon with command-v. - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I hope that guy releases the theme pictured at the top of the page. It's nice.
"Do you like this theme I’ve been working on? If there’s enough interest I’ll get it fixed up for Firefox 2.0 and post it for download." - jnagel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4He names the builds Deer Park in order to distinguish them from the actual official releases of Firefox. He can't legally use Firefox as the name since it is not an official build.
- allanpat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Can someone explain how these builds are optimized for Intel Macs? Is this just a GUI enhancement, or an actual performace enhancement?
- latca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2with foxy widgets the buttons and form fields can be changed with CSS while the aqua will always have the os x style buttons and form fields
- Mikecol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3He's actually referring to it as BonEcho.
- Mikecol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I would definitely get the aqua widgets. Those go a long way in making Firefox look more "Mac".
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4it's a theme called GrApple.
here's the page with a bunch of variants:
https://addons.mozilla.org/search.php?q=grapple&type=T&app=firefox
you'll have to cut & paste since digg can't handle https requests, apparently. - ReqX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's actually not one of the GrApple themes. It's actually nicer than Eos (now the only GrApple theme).
I hope it does get released. I need something to replace my precious GrApple Brasil. - streak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But the official builds aren't "optimized", correct?
- elfurbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lots of them. Check out here:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=42 - elfurbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Then do your research and learn that Neil has been building optimized builds for a damn long time. Read his website. Read through his old MozillaZine thread and find out what he's about. Read comments posted in other threads by him. Effort, sir, will prevail.
I'm not saying that there's anything inaccurate with what you're saying, but it's this sort of "oh my god some random guy isn't good enough to write software for my computer" mentality that keeps Microsoft in charge.
If you enjoy your lazy tinfoil outlook on software, keep it, but sowing FUD into a thread about Firefox builds that have an established reputation in the Firefox builder community is nonsense. - corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I love this guy's builds. They are always very impressive and operate faster than the default Mozilla build. Oh, and I'd highly recommend the "Firefoxy" form widgets over the "Aqua" version. The Firefoxy ones show up cleaner.
- Skeuomorph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2On the mirror, Intel Firefoxy link links to PPC. Link should be:
http://www.mobookie.com/firefox/firefox-intel-20.dmg - cullen73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not sure if this is stupid question, but here it goes. How do I get Gmail, Yahoo.com, and other sites to recognize the G4 optimized version as Firefox. Since Gmail does not recognize BonEcho I am only given a basic HTML view and no options or setting controls.
- flypcide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So any benchmarks to show how this is better over the regular version?
- Mikecol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Both.
- minime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.beatnikpad.com/archives/2006/10/28/how-to-change-the-user-agent-in-firefox
- Bhima, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Being the page isn't available would someone please clue me in?
- Loie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i tried the deerpark build for my G4 1.25 and it is SLOW compared to Safari. It loads slow, and even scrolling crawls on an image heavy page. This page: http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/index.html literally stutters in the Deerpark build. I like firefox a lot more than safari, especially with all my extensions set up the way I like, but Safari is so much faster i'm going to stick with it.
- metafore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dugg for applying open source for optimizations. it's just a shame i'm so mac-tarded i can't notice the difference....yet.
thanks?
THANKS! - rossbrown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ok, I didn't know if it was the same guy doing this build. That's what I was wondering. I realize he can't call these builds Firefox.
- scotsman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm gutted that GrApple (Brushed) is not available for FF2.0. I'm staying with the older version until I find a skin that I actually like. Most of them suck.
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2not one of the GrApples, hmmm. sorry. it looked just like GrApple (and eos isn't the only one-- i think 2 or 3 others are being continued to firefox 2). whatever. until dude actually makes that theme, GrApple should work well.
as for the link, well it didn't work for me earlier, so maybe it was a fluke. - starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2go shoot yourself.
- unluckier, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3So what reason do I have to trust and run an application that's downloaded from "some guy" ? I'm not saying that there's anything fishy going on here, but it's this sort of "run random crap from the internet" mentality that gets people's machines infected with all sorts of nasties.
- neilio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Whoops - sorry, I was typing really fast. Fixed.
- elfurbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The difference is in the stylish icon... :)
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2SWEET! i was JUST looking for this!
- neilio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1streak, you can see examples of what the Firefoxy and aqua form widgets look like here:
http://www.beatnikpad.com/archives/2006/02/02/firefox1501
As for why, well, that's because I like them. If you don't trust using these builds there's always the official releases: http://www.mozilla.com/ - Bhima, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Isn't "Bon Echo" like some sort of prerelease code?
Why does my firefox icon say "BonEcho"? - DooDooFace, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Is there a difference with these builds?
http://firefoxmac.furbism.com/ - igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i chose FireFoxy widgets... but idk w/e you want
- RichMan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm on a 1.5ghz G4 Mac Mini, and I see two optimized versions of 2.0 for me.. w/ Firefoxy form widgets and aqua form widgets.. hmm, which one should I choose?
- elfurbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So much ignorance about the code names. State Parks in Canada was somewhat right, that's where the name Bon Echo comes from, but neither Neil nor any other third party builder chose the names, they're the code names for the different releases of Firefox. DeerPark was the code name for the 1.5.x branch, BonEcho for the 2.x branch, and Minefield is for the current trunk. When they branch Mozilla 1.9 for Firefox 3.x, it will become known as GranParadiso This is the same concept as things like Windows "Longhorn" or Intel "Conroe" or Mac OS X "Tiger".
- elfurbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The stock widget kit for Firefox on the Mac is a travesty against UI design. I'm not sure what there is to distrust about a widget kit, but if you want the stock widgets, you've come to the wrong build community.
The official nightlies aren't optimized for anything particular though, you're correct there. They build them with options to ensure broad compatibility not to eek out performance. - quazywabbit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2didn't need to cut and paste the link, worked fine from here
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Builds of FF compiled by third parties are called Bon Echo and have that icon to tell them apart from official FF builds.
- adstretch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0any chance that you could do optimized builds of Camino? It craps out pretty severly on intel machines.
- fireflash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Just an observation, but the filename for the Firefoxy version for the Intel Macs says:
firefox-ppc7450-20.dmg
Note the PPC part. Is this a typo or is it really the PPC version? if so, why is it listed under Intel Macs? - rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Is /b/ invading Digg or are you just an idiot?
- terath, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I'm not sure if universal binaries distinguish between G4 and G5 machines, only between ppc intel.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Cool
