- UncommonSense, on 10/12/2007, -6/+43Rhizome, I appreciate you leaving me positive eBay feedback on the Digg website.
It was a pleasure doing business with you. Enjoy your penis pump. - TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -9/+29same thing happened to me, heading off to college, never owned a mac but i HAD to have one. best computer decision ever.
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22I think the Intel move boosted momentum with the capability to dual-boot, parallels, and the possibility of native windows app support.
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26Apple's such a great company. I have always felt a sense of pride being a Mac user. In one hand, I want Apple to succeed beyond their wildest dreams and sell more computers than any other manufacturer in the world, but in the other hand (somewhat selfishly) I want the Mac user group to stay a small close group. I guess I'm just feeling nervous about the baby Apple growing up.
Ah, the glories of becoming a rock star are great, but then you often get labeled a sell-out. - TimG, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19It's the same as the Mcdonalds effect. Mcdonalds gives toys out to young kids in happy meals to build found childhood memories so when they get older they will choose to eat at Mcdonalds. Apple has sort of built the same effect with teens and the ipod. When teens are going off to collage and picking there laptop they have the whole hip image of there ipod and want that in there computer.
- stuartjmoore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15college apps are all web based now. WebCT, WebAssign, etc.
- bbatsell, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19@Qtip42:
What college do you attend? Mine (and my friends tell me the same holds true of theirs) has an extraordinary number of students using Macs instead of PCs, and in fact about 50% of the university's own computer systems are Macs. The other 50% is mostly Unix (usually Solaris) and Linux with some Windows machines thrown in for good measure. Windows is definitely in the minority at mine. - Fotograffiti, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16If you always hated Mac, then why would you want the ability to boot into OS X? If you only like Windows, then having Boot Camp shouldn't make any difference to you.
- fauxXenophanes, on 10/12/2007, -20/+32Now all they have to do is drop the price a bit and license the O.S.
Bill Gates Circa 1983 - earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14The kids of today are the adults of tomorrow. The game has been lost for Apple on the current generation of Adults, and while gains are being made a total flip is unlikely, so why not start fresh with the next one? Its a perfect strategy. Start with a group where the old bias and stigma doesn't exist and in a few years the world will change
- brainache, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I dunno. Don't get me wrong i love my Mac but as a company... I'm not sure about apple. They don't seem to mind screwing their users over sometimes. Take my iBook G4 for example. It has an ATI Radeon graphics card, and i plug it into my 1280x1024 monitor and it will only display at a max of 1024x768. That is unacceptable. A simple hack found on the internet actually enables the higher resolutions, why disable them in the first place? To get people to buy PowerBooks and MacBook Pros just for the higher res. Its a great scam but its a kick in the balls to the Mac devotée.
Secondly, I have great respect for Bill Gates ploughing a biggish chunk of his personal fortune into Charities and charitable causes. Do you ever hear of this from Apple or Steve Jobs?
Finally, what the frack is up with vendor lock-in with iPod, iTunes, Mac and iTMS? I'm sorry but this is not a good thing for users. Seriously apple, how about licensing your FairPlay tech? Not doing so creates bad publicity (at least it does in Europe, the US seem to actually like vendor lock-in from the american opinions I heard of the French attempt at legislation requiring technology sharing) and now I, a very happy Mac user, am questioning the ethical practices of the all-mighty Apple.
Seriously dudes, sort it out. - Akkarin128, on 10/12/2007, -10/+21A good article, good read. Made a lot of sense.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Many of the "switchers" are in the same mindset. I know I sold 4 notebooks for Apple this summer and of the 4 switchers only one didn't want to run Bootcamp (which is still very beta by the way).
- Twango, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13You could have *mentioned* it a couple of weeks ago!
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"Nothing like the smell of self-satisfied, "holier than thou" mac users in the morning..."
Yet oddly enough I find the smell more appealing then the pungent, bitter aroma of ignorant Apple haters spewing their irrational blather on every Apple digg... - dingofire, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20Good artice indeed. Very logical conclusions, well thought out.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"Apple has 4.5% of the market. Despite the narrow world of the college campus, most people own PC laptops and will continue to do so." - flag564
Funny, last quarter Apple had over 12% of the laptop market. Which is nowhere close to a market leading share (so yes, most people own PC laptops), but that's a pretty good slice of laptop sales (particularly when your laptops have higher profit margins than your competitors'). And the MacBook was only shipping for HALF the quarter.
Apple haters, brace yourselves. You're going to be seeing a lot of Mac laptops around in the coming years. - cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Well, I'm sure it still beats the smell of geeks in the late afternoon.
- earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14then why didn't you just buy the drive from newegg?
- muffinking, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15I believe that when students go off to college for the '08-'09 school year, they'll be buying a lot more Apple computers than in previous years, as they'll have had their iPods for about 4 years and will be much more comfortable with Apple as a company than in past years. Any qualms they might have had about "The Big Switch" (tm) to Mac are slowly being eradicated, with the introduction of a broader range of prices from around $500 for a Mac mini to $2800 for a top-of-the-line G5, as well as the opportunity to install Windows for any applications (or games, whatever) that aren't available on the Mac. I think what Apple needs to do is make the installation of Linux, Mac, and Windows, all on one hard drive, very easy. If they did this, there would be virtually nothing the Mac couldn't do. It would become an unstoppable juggernaut, with the right ad campaign launched at the right time.
- RyanOC, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19Ive hated macs for a while, but now Im thinking about getting one since I discovered apples "boot camp". Now I could have a mac and run windows also, tempting!
RyanOC - Loonacy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17I just bought a new laptop, and I was seriously thinking of getting a MacBook. But then I went and saw their prices, and that was the end of it right there.
Looking on Newegg.com, the most expensive 120GB hard drive they have is $159.99.
Go to store.apple.com, choose a MacBook with a 60GB hard drive, and then choose the option to upgrade to a 120GB hard drive. UPGRADING from the 60 to the 120 is $250. What kind of laptop hard drive costs $250 + the cost of a 60GB hard drive?
The laptop I bought has basically the same hardware as Apple's $2499.00 Macbook Pro (Except mine had 512MB more RAM and a 20GB larger hard drive, but crap Intel video), and only cost me about $1200. - spadin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10You should've invested a couple of weeks ago when AAPL was in the 50s. You could have made a cool 25-30% return in just two weeks.
- Books, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15It is like that every year. Kids are going off to college/university and say "How about a Mac?"
Then people will tell them, 'no viruses, spyware, its fast...etc' and they get them. Not because it's a fad, but because it will work out better for them. - powerpuffmidget, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Well that's good for me - I invested in 50 shares of them yesterday. *pictures self as millionaire*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16good time to buy more Apple stock?
- phill, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13A lot of people hate Macs for no reason other than it's something else. The same people would hate Linux also, if they knew it existed.
After switching my family to Macs, I've been able to enjoy my time and get some sleep at night...in stead of fixing their computers at all hours of the day. - Loonacy, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15"then why didn't you just buy the drive from newegg?"
Because if Apple is willing to charge me 200% the price of a hard drive, what else are they overcharging me on? Obviously, since I bought a comparable laptop for half the price, they're overcharging on just about everything.
"But you still didn't get OS X, or the design that goes into every Mac"
No, but I got Windows(Media center, yuck), and I wiped the drive and installed Linux. Sure, it would be nice to have OS X, but it's not worth paying over a thousand dollars more for the laptop.
" - its Hardware, Software, and System....built to run flawlessly by the same company"
My previous laptop lasted me 5 years, the only reason I'm getting a new one is because my demands have changed and the old laptop couldn't keep up. I doubt a 5 year old Mac would fare any better.
"...and you are forgetting the hundreds of dollars of free software you get one every mac...and savings you would have gotten because of the time you saved."
I already have all the software I need, and most of it was free anyway. Buying a Mac probably wouldn't have saved me much time, because I would have had to figure out how to install Linux using boot camp or Parallels or something. I would have liked to at least try OS X out for a while, but for work I have to have Linux.
Honestly, what advantages do I get from having Mac OS X that would make it worth that much more $$$? - jawadde, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13such event is inevitable : market forces will always drive companies to greed. But untill that happens, Apple is still the best choice in many ways. And when it happens, alternatives will appear in the same way that Apple is the alternative for Microsoft today.
- tvc15, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10@Loonacy
why are you comparing a pc with "crap Intel video" to a macbook pro? compare it to a regular macbook which uses the same thing.
base price for base model: $1099
add $250 for your drive: $1349
up your ram: $1499
of course nobody would buy the extras from apple - fungifred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6So, It isn't that you hate Macs, because you seem interested in running OS X, you just hate that Mac users love their machines and are always dogging on the machine that you just built for 2-grand. Not everyone gets it when I tell them that their brand new Dell running windows XP is OLD to me, but the truth is, a Mac does what I do NOW the best; Windows does what I did in 1990 ok. So, NOW I run a Mac.
- phlll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Can firewire be set up in a RAID array?
- DCMacHead, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8What I think is very fascinating is how Microsoft has botched the Vista date so badly--I think missing Christmas might hurt them. If I were in the market for a family computer around the holidays, I certainly wouldn't be rushing to buy a PC if I knew that XP was going to be dated in early 2007.
- cartwheels, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Why is Tim being dugg down? He's right. Creating a positive brand image at a young age is a GREAT way to market a product.
- nofear1az, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6not just BootCamp... Parallels... much better option. No dual booting involved. Run Windows and OSX simultaneously with no performance hit. It's a no brainer!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Is this what its all come down to for Apple users? Grasping at every article, reiterating what they've been saying, or rather hoping for 25 years: "This is the year Apple finally takes off!!!"
- smeager, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@SuperV
I knew somebody would bring that up -- "security through obscurity" argument again. It simple doesn't hold water. As - dietCoke- had already stated, then Unix underpinnings that OS X uses makes the system inherently more secure that Windows. That's how it was designed from the beginning. Just think of it... 5 years and not a single virus for OS X (I'm not talking about Spy-ware and such, talking about viruses) verses 114,000 and counting for Windows XP. That has to say something.
You can't even use the argument "because not a lot of people use it so it's not as big a target" because Windows Vista (mind you still in development) has already been hit with a virus and it hasn't even been released to the general public yet. You are asking "What Virus?", well it was the same one that affected XP... the WMF vulnerability (which could be used for viruses and such) and it happened at a time when there where only a few thousand (10,000) copies of it out being tested. What does that tell you.
I am by no means an apple fanboi as I use anything that gets the job done but security is one thing that Apple got right. You can't say the same for Microsoft. - DocNo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@fufubag
I never understood this "rational" - do you base all your decisions from what other people think?
I am typing on a Powerbook G4 12" laptop right now because it's a great tool. Not because it's a great lifestyle...
Yes, you will get some Mac fan's that get exuberant in proselytizing their choice of platform, but really - when you use a tool that is so incredibly easy and fun to use (to you) why wouldn't you want to share in your good fortune?
That and you can get a little sick of getting "modded down" every time there is a discussion of computers and you use something other than windows. Having been a Mac user since 1986, I can tell you at times it was wearing pretty thin...
So here's a thought - pick up an Intel based MacBook or a Mac Mini and give it a whirl yourself. You might just find out what the fuss is about ;) If you don't agree, you can still run Windows or Linux on some pretty darn good hardware.
Finally, because of the Intel switch, I can get a MacBook Pro at work for my primary machine - from an approved enterprise buying agreement - woot! I can run XP in Paralles for the few Windows-only apps I require, and enjoy Mac OSX as my primary OS at work.
Finally, life is good :) - vprice509, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Macs give me a boner. PCs make me microsoft.
- Prod_Deity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Watch out for the massive amounts of "party fouls" in college.
I have a feeling AppleCare doesn't cover spilled beer or dropping bong water on your new shiny MacBook. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"What compromises do you speak of?"
Catering to corporate demands, increasing hardware support, meeting the needs of 1,000 different audiences, backwards compatibility, licensing OSX to other computer vendors, and cheaper hardware to name a few. And if Apple had great success they'd be facing even more monopoly and antitrust issues than Microsoft.
A lot of people try and promote buying Macs but be careful what you wish for. Like politicians I think Apple might lose its soul in a fight for dominance. - lilmoonee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Right...at the University of Texas at Austin (The school where Michael Dell dropped out of) has macs EVERYWHERE. Pretty much every internet kiosk on campus is a mac. The computers have a pretty even distribution of macs and windows machines. And this is the school right next door to Dell's headquarters.
- phlll, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7If people are buying Macs because it's trendy, that is *not* good news for Apple. What's trendy today is embarrassing a couple years down the road.
- vprice509, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"People who don't like Chex cereals haven't tried Chex cereals"
My step-mom "doesn't like Macs". Her point of reference is what she used 12 years ago at work. To my friends and family I extend a personal money-back guarantee. If they buy a Mac and, after 6 months, don't like it, I will buy it from them full-price. There is really no risk involved for me, since I know they will never want to give up their Mac. - ronmexico, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14I've been a Mac user for many years now and love them. I finally used iWeb today for the first time, it reminded me of just how superior the bundled software that comes with a Mac is compared to a PC. I'm not by any means a Microsoft hater, but I do think Windows stinks. To comment on the article, I hope to upgrade my Mini to an iMac when Tiger is released.
- Create, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8i didnt rtfa, but just from the description given...
i work at a computer repair shop, we fix pc's, we build pc's and not much else...
whenever a young person wants a new computer, and is going off to college, the first thing they ask is either "do you sell macs", "should i buy a mac?", or "what do you think of macs?"... and my question is always "why do you want to switch to a mac?"...
and the usual reply is "i don't know"... so i say this is good news for apple, people will blindly follow whatever the latest trend is, and right now, macs are it
and just as a side note, the ones mostly looking to make this change are the 18-20 year old females who come from families with money (blonde (spoiled) bobble heads... just an observation). - coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8...and ignoring that fact that in many cases you simply can't get Windows equivalents that are as good.
- fungifred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4But, you are one of those people that doesn't get it. People want their PHOTOS on the computer not a folder of .JPG files. Apple embraces new ways to use the computer. Windows still does everything the same way that it did in dos, just now, it is a folder of .jpg files instead of .txt files. I want to manage music and songs, not .mp3 files. These other people want to also. In Windows, you take the problem of digital photos and make the photos into a computer thing by storing photos in files and collections of photos in folders. On the Mac, it is still made to be a computer thing underneath but, all the user sees are pictures. Apple solved digital photos by making the computer do the photo thing.
If you keep thinking that, the average user just wants to check email (in a browser) browse the web and open a bunch of jpeg files, a win 95 machine is all they need -
