- edstate, on 08/13/2008, -3/+50Spot on.
And the lack of a landscape keyboard option plain idiotic. - hadiz, on 08/13/2008, -5/+50When I upgraded to 2.01, I figured the laggy SMS, bluetooth issues and other hangups not present in 1.1.4 would be fixed. Boy was I mistaken.
- joebloggs2k8, on 08/13/2008, -3/+26A good article which concisely covers all the key issues to date. Lets hope Apple are listening and will get things right for the next iPhone release.
- LawSchoolGuy, on 08/13/2008, -7/+23Seriously, the 3G handling is terrible. I usually leave the phone on EDGE unless I want to access the internet, and even then I only can hope I'm getting a decent singal. This is in D.C., where there is supposedly blanket coverage (tested in LA and Las Vegas too, also terrible). 90% of the time I get 0 to 2 bars. Also, and this should be an easy fix, the switch from 3G when there is one or no bars to EDGE takes forever - the phone needs to switch networks much more quickly to really be useful. Or, you know, just work on 3G like advertised.
- totorototoro, on 08/13/2008, -1/+16Fix Safari.
- utexas112, on 08/13/2008, -3/+13 Since 2.0, I've had lagging issues, worsening battery life, freezing. It just feels more sluggish. The applications are awesome, but I'm not sure super monkey ball et. al. was worth the downside.
- MacHarborGuy, on 08/13/2008, -3/+13been running the iPhone 3G since their release, and while I do have issues, they are not as bad as everyone else. However, the amount of issues do show that something is definitely wrong out there. This could also make a fix take longer to develop since reports of issues vary so greatly.
My largest concern is the hour+ backup process. I find it hard to understand why it takes 90 minutes to backup the iphone. I have heard that it backs up the whole phone to a disk image and encrypts it, but that just seems like a waste. You already have your music and apps in iTunes most likely, so why can't the basic meta data (playlists more or less) and the stored app data just be backed up instead? More weird is that my iPod Touch updated to the latest firmware doesn't take 90 minutes to back up and is just as full of music/apps, if not more so, than my iPhone.
As Leo Leporte has noticed, App crashes appear to happen the most if you install/update apps via the iPhone's built-in app store. If you install/update via iTunes and sync them to the phone the crashes seem to be far far fewer. - halaric, on 08/13/2008, -7/+16The 3G is pretty bloody spotty here in the UK also.
I've been 100m from an o2 base station (in London) and been on EDGE.
And the GPS is a bit crap also. - luap119, on 08/13/2008, -0/+7Don't get me wrong, I love the iPhone and own one myself, but I definitely agree with this article.
There are other "little" overseen problems, too. For instance, where is MMS? Also, why can't you go to landscape with ever application? I know these aren't a huge deal, but it would make the whole experience more enjoyable. - athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -2/+9The main problems I have had in the past month:
-Apps crashing
-When my phone is updating apps, the audio player skips and the phone seriously lags.
-GPS at times is way off my position
-Calls fail like 5 times in a row before get through to the person I'm dialing.
-Battery life is significantly lower with the 3G.
-At times the phone is not as smooth (as in typing, selecting icons etc..) as the first generation.
Other than those things I love the phone and wouldn't settle for less. The good news is is that a lot of these problems can be fixed with upgrades or better service coverage. - Mercwear, on 08/13/2008, -5/+12I cant believe no copy and paste did not make your list. My iPhone 3g has been great btw.
- mpweave, on 08/13/2008, -3/+10Not to mention the looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong backup time.
- mavedatthews85, on 08/13/2008, -0/+6Good article.
Another for the list: BATTERY LIFE. That goes for the original too, though. - inactive, on 08/13/2008, -1/+7ducking thing sucks! (iphone converts it to duck or ducking)
- johnomaz, on 08/13/2008, -6/+12THE ***** KEYBOARD!!!!!!!! I want to type more than 5 words a minute!!!!!
- totorototoro, on 08/13/2008, -0/+6The iPhone Safari is disturbingly like Safari for Windows in terms of random crashes, actually.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 08/13/2008, -3/+9The only thing I've noticed with my iPhone 3G is the occasional interface lag, something that should be remedied in further software updates. You guys laughing at the iPhone owners are idiots, because guess what? Most folks who have iPhones are happy with them. Count me among that group. My GPS has been fine thus far, 3G has been solid where 3G is available, and I've noticed few crashes, most of them in Safari. It's been great thus far and I'm confident that the few hiccups I've seen will be ironed out before too long.
- Subvexer, on 08/13/2008, -8/+13Apple: We'll almost implement something that's already working elsewhere.
See the two-buttoned mouse for an example of this. - KniteWulf, on 08/13/2008, -6/+11Ho ho ho, let's bash Windows to appear cool!
I've had freezing problems in OSX, XP, and Vista; the freezing issue is not exclusive to one OS or manufacturer. And Apple's don't always "just work," so please STFU. - inactive, on 08/13/2008, -2/+7I don't see why it can't have regular MMS , and allow bluetooth to computer connections. I think it should be able to sync via wifi, or bluetooth. Plus the camera still takes bad shots, not very clear, especially when you have different lights in the background , it has lag when snapping a photo, maybe even a dedicated button for the cam would of been nice so you don't have to try to hold the phone, touch the screen without messing up the shot.
- Sfenton, on 08/13/2008, -4/+8As an iphone owner who recently converted to Blackberry, I felt your pain.
- eggsovereasy, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4I know it sucks, I also can't find my stapler.
- NewSearchEngine, on 08/13/2008, -2/+6The iPhone 3G is slow. I updated to 2.0.1 and still sloooow.
- eggsovereasy, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4The only place in Nashville I haven't gotten 3g is in the basement at work, but honestly I'm lucky to get a signal at all.
- chedabob, on 08/13/2008, -2/+6Well, the activation process and on-screen keyboard were both problems with the original iPhone...
- digitaldivinci, on 08/13/2008, -3/+7Everything I took for granted on the original iPhone is biting me in the ass. Keyboard that is responsive? Should be a given. Battery lasting me a full day? Should be a given. I guess that Apple doesn't share my vision of a phone that has it's highlights working correctly.
If anyone tries to defend a ***** battery and a buggy keyboard, I will rip your head off. - pixelate, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4Eggsovereasy, we're gonna need to go ahead and move you downstairs into storage B.
We have some new people coming in, and we need all the space we can get. So if you could just go ahead and pack up your stuff and move it down there, that would be terrific, OK? - comradeTJH, on 08/13/2008, -4/+7Seems like this is an AT&T issue, here in Zürich, Switzerland I get very decent 3G coverage all over the city and even on the countryside with Swisscom. I'm really happy with the speeds as well.
- DaRkz0mbie, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3Dugg for capital acronym awareness.
- dan21328, on 08/13/2008, -2/+5The auto-correction definitely needs some sort of way to train it. I'm ducking tired of having to hit two extra keys to avoid shouting LOL to my friends, screaming WTF, and that it still doesn't know how to spell my last name.
- somberlaine, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3version 2 is extremely buggy period.
- ShooterMcGavin, on 08/13/2008, -2/+5I'm having problems with Safari closing for absolutely no reason. That's always fun.
Until yesterday, I hadn't noticed the laggy keyboard... I didn't know what everyone was talking about. Well, now I know. And it sucks.
At least I haven't had to restore from backup due to the applications-opening-then-closing-in-3-seconds bug since the update. *crosses fingers* - Taiyoryu, on 08/13/2008, -2/+5You know copy and paste would be nice, but the whole need for it would lessen if more iPhone apps were context aware. For example, a Calendar event has a prompt for a location. It would be nice if the Calendar app could forward that location to the Maps app by tapping on the location. The iPhone would be better if every app was able to recognize a phone number, address, URL, etc.
- deaftly, on 08/13/2008, -1/+4Worst GPS ive ever used
- molotovcat, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3Copy & paste! For *****'s sake!
- davewelsh79, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3That's my number one gripe. I think it has to do with javascript-heavy pages and the browser running out of memory, but I'm only guessing.
- ThinkBox, on 08/13/2008, -1/+4That's still AT&T, yeah I know, APPLE PICKED THEM, but dont expect too much to change with a software or hardware update if service is crappy. Crappy service in your area? B uy and iTouch and then use a different phone.
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -3/+6My N95 has that , and it lasts quite a long time
- DianasAngels, on 08/13/2008, -6/+9MMS
- drgooch, on 08/13/2008, -1/+4i definitely want to buy one but i can't justify the monthly cost of the family plan.... basic is $129. isn't that a lot?
- Kazbaeden, on 08/13/2008, -2/+5Um, just keep your porn off your iPhone. Do you really need to be spanking it on the go?
- danc4498, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3The laggy SMS, while definitely not fixed, is much better than it was on 2.0. Before the keyboard would lag every single time I tried to send a text message, but now it's only 25% of the time.
- sensor, on 08/13/2008, -1/+4But but... isn't Apple perfect? How could it make software that is buggy?!
- Gee1004, on 08/13/2008, -3/+6yes, Safari Sucks
- lebruf, on 08/13/2008, -4/+7The number one fix would be to give iPhone users a choice in service providers and eliminate this monopolistic and systematic rape of consumers for a service that personally makes me truly regret ever leaving Sprint for something $40 more expenseive and 1/2 as reliable.
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -2/+5whats better than a back ally rub off on the way to work?
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2For the most part, the stock apps do a fantastic job of precisely that. Obviously the calendar-location thing could be a bit tricky, since I doubt Google Maps can easily find "Conference Room," but Safari figures out phone numbers and lets you tap them to dial. Most addresses work fine from the contact list going to the maps, and phone #'s and URLs you get from the map work just fine. Third Party apps can and should do this, but many don't. This is not Apple's fault.
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2This here is Digg, son, and we don't take too kindly to reason and logic 'round these parts. Now drop and give me 20 knee-jerk reactions!
- Bob042, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2A third-party camera app that was for jailbroken phones had a simple function that apple really should implement. Pressing either volume button while in the camera takes a picture. It makes a lot of sense, hopefully apple adds it to the official camera app.
- VelvetHammer, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2As a long time Apple customer, both personal and professional, I find my recent experience with the iPhone 3G and MobileMe to be very upsetting. I can't believe I sold my old iPhone 8GB for this horrible white iPhone 3G 16Gb. Since day one I've had terrible 3G signal strength (in DFW, a heavily covered area), abysmal battery life (with and without 3G enabled, bluetooth off, and wifi disabled), serious interface slowdowns (keystrokes taking placing 15 seconds after typing), and poor ipod performance (slow to respond, forgetting track location, skipping, repeating.) Don't even get me started on the constant need to 'reboot' the phone because Safari and Map crashes.
That doesn't even include all the terrible issues I've had with the half baked mess that is MobileMe.
I work in technology, and understand it's not perfect. But that does not excuse what is obviously an attempt by Apple to capitalize on the iPhone's success and turn out a sub par product.
Come on Apple, admit there's a design issue with this phone, the longer you wait the more of these lemons there will be out there for you to replace.
On the fence about whether or not to get one? DON'T!
I refuse to use my contacts at Apple corporate to get the help I need, but never get from Apple support. Because I want to see what a normal customer would have to suffer through with this product. My experience will heavily influence my future personal and professional purchases, as well as whether or not I continue to be a shareholder. -
