- sruffelman, on 07/14/2008, -2/+34The old iPhone took 74 days to make that mark.
- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -4/+33Apple's success proves a very important lesson. Geeks CAN'T predict *****, because they don't understand the needs or interests of ordinary people.
For example, there are thousands of geeks on the web who complain about the lack of features on the iPhone. These geeks actually use all those features they refer to on their Windows Mobile phones or Blackberries, even if the features are implemented poorly. A regular person will probably use 10 percent of those features on the same smartphones. If they have to go to the user manual for more than five minutes, they do without.
With geeks, on the other hand, learning to use those poorly implemented features is half the challenge. They're like a jock rebuilding the intake valve on a Camaro. Regular people just want to pick up a phone and use it. So, no matter what features the iPhone doesn't have, regular people will still want it. That's something most geeks will never understand.
I talk with geeks all the time who just can't understand why anyone would want to pay more for an Apple computer, when you can build your own PC for "half the price!" Whenever I tell them that my sister and grandma have no desire to build a computer and would rather buy it off the shelf, they just look at me with a blank stare. And even though I have the ability to build my own computer, I just don't have the desire anymore, but then again, I've burnt out enough motherboards in my day to kill the mystique. - kraetos, on 07/14/2008, -8/+24I, for one, welcome our new Apple overlords.
- kraetos, on 07/14/2008, -0/+14None, since Apple specifically stated they wouldn't take any.
- tumbler360, on 07/14/2008, -2/+14Pandora. Download pandora. All the other apps are nothing compared to that incredible little program. TONS of music for free and it picks songs you'll like! I LOVE IT!
- superkendall, on 07/14/2008, -4/+16Right except for one thing - many geeks do not actually use all those features, they just like to have them!
Those of us geeks that have figured out the features that we actually need and use, are very happy with the featureset of the iPhone. - nymbot, on 07/14/2008, -2/+13AT&T: Now in more places, like NSA HEADQUARTERS.
- MortalynFlux, on 07/14/2008, -2/+10What's up with this hitting the Digg front page twice at the same time?
- superkendall, on 07/14/2008, -1/+9It signals a great interest in mobile applications, which improves everyones life.
- superkendall, on 07/14/2008, -0/+6Why not? It would be awesome if Android had a spectacular launch and drove away a couple of proprietary systems.
- superkendall, on 07/14/2008, -1/+7Background notification support in September. Then IM apps will not need to run in the background at all.
- Hercules, on 07/14/2008, -3/+8How many of those downloads were the free ones, versus paid ones?
And how many of the paid ones were ones that had a space in the beginning of the name to bump their name on the list? - Flytrap, on 07/14/2008, -0/+5Aren't you lucky. I have an HTC TyTN (the original one) and I restart it several times a day!
It appears to be getting worse (probably some bad software), especially after the local HTC distributor upgraded it to the latest firmware. I've been able to live with restarting my phone a few times a day because I have owned over 10 WindowsCE, Pocket PC, Windows Mobile devices since I was hooked on the Cassiopeia E105 (yes, that brick sized PDA that was the first colour WinCE device).
On the Windows Mobile platform, a few restarts per day is a good day! About one restart a day means that you probably do not have any third party software and are probably not what one would refer to as a power user. - SenorCardgage74, on 07/14/2008, -2/+7The main problem is that the geeks (using the common definition of geeks here) are bitter that they have aptitudes and interests that the common person doesnt share, and they feel that they should get something back for it. They cant understand why the world doesnt respect them more for being passionate about things most people could care less about.
Yes it's important to know how to code and build a PC and all that *****.
Yes, the modern world we all love is dependent on those skills.
No, chicks are not going to want to ***** you or peeps (necessarily) want to hang out with you just because you have some kind of mastery of those things.
Naturally, alot of those guys cant understand why it is that no one really cares what goes on under the hood (the irony of course is that many of them would have the same lack of interest/respect in what an auto mechanic does) and, most importantly, dont realize that NO ONE HAS TO CARE.
So they delude themselves into thinking that we are all just mindless drones, beckoned by slick marketing. Most of them dont get the value of aesthetics and user experience to the everyday person. To them thats all just surface stuff, and of course must be trivial. They miss the entire point. I don't give a ***** about how cotton is made either, but I know that I want my clothes to look nice and hold together. And thats all I need to care about.
These are the same dudes that were evangelical about every clunky off brand mp3 player back when the iPod was just taking off, and we all know how big of a failure that Apple product was, whether it plays ***** FLAC or not. (Rolls eyes Then End) - Spire3660, on 07/14/2008, -0/+5Dugg for truth. It took ALOT of aging for me to figure out the one of the oldest truths, time=money. I build my own gaming PCs but thats about it.
- ngmcs8203, on 07/14/2008, -0/+510 million downloaded and how many million forced restarts. I've had to force restart my iPhone 3g (as well as my wifes) at least once a day since Friday. Stupid apps and their lack of testing (don't get me wrong, I love the apps but FSM, this is ridiculous!)
- DeFex, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4Dont you want to be rogered?
- techdever, on 07/14/2008, -10/+14"10 million App Store downloaded" - where can I download the App Store?
- zombiecarlin, on 07/14/2008, -1/+5Well what if something better came along like an open source mobile platform that seriously pushes mobile applications forward, would you have the same excitement for it or would you ignore it to continue your Apple crusade?
- Omadhaun, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4I would also highly recommend Last.fm. It also supplies tons of music for free directly to your iPhone/iPod Touch, but in addition it actually shows you what you've listened to in the past (unlike Pandora). I use both and enjoy both, but if you haven't tried Last.fm yet, check it out.
- tomthebitx, on 07/14/2008, -1/+4I got a few free apps for my first generation iPhone like the AIM app, but as far as IM apps go, agile messenger is way better, but requires you to unlock your phone. I wish Apple would let apps like that run in the background - it just makes sense for an IM app.
- earnjam, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3What does being a jock have to do with working on a Camaro?
- Tezdoll, on 07/14/2008, -1/+41 million iphones sold and i still don't care.
- skidooer, on 07/14/2008, -2/+4The open source mobile platform would have to be significantly better to receive the same fanfare as the iPhone. If it was only slightly better, it would be received as just an iPhone clone, and thus not worthy of any press.
The iPhone gets the press because it was such a huge step forward for mobile computing. Android, for example, won't get the same attention because it doesn't do a whole lot more than what the iPhone has already been doing for a long time. - kraetos, on 07/14/2008, -2/+4I bet that tinfoil hat is really uncomfortable in the summer.
- DeFex, on 07/14/2008, -3/+5How many people got tourettes from trying to get their apps and new OS.
- nymbot, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Crazy right? Here's a video from ABC on the subjec, which not too long ago got over 3k diggs:
http://digg.com/world_news/NSA_copies_and_retains_ ...
ATT has enabled the NSA and the Bush administration to completely trample your privacy, be it internet traffic, or phone calls.
You may not have known about it, but domestic spying isn't a conspiracy-fantasy, it's what's going on, and it's the reason FISA was made. Educate yourself, do some googling on AT&T NSA or domestic spying. - thrasher6670, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2Well less if you get the $30 for 6gb then get a cheap voice plan... cheap being relative in canada.
my plan will be $65 + system access - rheaume, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2And relative being 200 minutes a month? hehe
- xsecretfiles, on 07/14/2008, -15/+17I am part of that 10 million. I am a proud sucker!
- mstachiw, on 07/14/2008, -1/+3only App worth getting (nongame since i have a DS, PS3 and Wii for that) is OmniFocus and even that is a bit $$ for feature set
how come this thing has like 50 tip calculators but no one developed a word processor for it? - paulot, on 07/14/2008, -1/+3"We're really excited about this. We've spent a lot of time on this and we really think we got it right this time. You're going to love it."
- superkendall, on 07/14/2008, -3/+5Even figuring a lot of those apps were probably free apps, that's a lot of downloads.
And the first iPhone took three months to sell a million, so making the ten million iPhone sales goal by the end of the year should be no trouble at all. - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -3/+5So...Apple has sold 7 million iPhones.
Microsoft sells 20 MILLION Windows Mobile phones every year!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_mobile
http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Mobile-and-Wireless/Micro ...
...and most have full QWERTY keyboards! - USER1236, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2I will upgrade my iphone version 1.0 to version 3.0 for sure, assuming it has 32 gb of storage or more, better camera, and still subsidized.
- urothane, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2Well I just took a count of what I downloaded and I am 30 of the 10 million, but I only paid for one $.99 one which turns out wasn't worth it.
- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -4/+6Yep, I folded.
< --- iPhone fanboi - Pledio, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2I'd like to see how many of those iphones were to exisiting customers, replacing their current unit. I honestly don't believe they drummed up much new business with this phone.
- codemonkey314, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2Really? It doesn't do a whole lot more?
Check out the slide show of the 50 top apps from developers for the android and tell me that it's not a hell of a lot more than what the iPhone can do. - Pledio, on 07/15/2008, -1/+2I'm not knocking the iPhone. It's a great utility, but Apple and AT&T could have done so much more with this launch, but reverted back to classic cellular scam marketing, ESPECIALLY overseas, and in other countries. They sheisted the data plans, the contracts, the actual pricing structure. I used to have a lot of respect for Apple. They seemed like the one profitable company out there that had some margin of morality, but as time has gone on, they've shifted directions, in terms of product quality, and inner management.
As a former Apple employee, it's saddening to see that Steve Jobs is nothing more than the megalomaniac that his entire design team at Cupertino complained about, and it's reflective in this launch.
Honestly, I think it's a great product, but they're doing the same ***** Microsoft did back in the 90s, except we all love Apple, so it's apparently okay!
And yeah, I'd probably buy one if it was opened up on the Sprint network, but that doesn't change my opinion of how far Apple is from what they used to be. - mstachiw, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1epic fail = own ipod touch, straight+happily married, & lest i forget you're a lame bigot that obviously lives a sheltered life... probably die a lonely death, with your fake friends, or tossed in a grave as shallow as the life you've lived
- ftx437, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2out of those million how many were repeat buyers and how many where new?
- greenldr, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Obviously you did not stand in line, out of ~90 people in line at my local AT&T store launch-day, only 6 already had iPhones, and judging by everyone else I know, the people who already have them are the ones who are NOT planning to get the new one.
I mean seriously, if you have actually used the iPhone you would know that it would be insane to spend money on any other smartphone period. I have used WM5, WM6, 2 different Palms, and a Blackberry. All of them are complete crap compared to the iPhone, and the quality of apps for the iPhone 3-days after launch ALREADY destroys any app for any other platform I've ever used...
I really get sick of people knocking the iPhone when they have never actually even used the thing. Please stick to commenting about things you know something about. - Galaxylander, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2They sure do. But there are about 400 ***** Windows Mobile phones and ONE iPhone. Microsoft has a ***** of brands using their OS but Microsoft doesn't make the hardware.
Apple makes the hardware and the OS and the OS doesn't run on any other phone.
What Apple has done is far more impressive then what Microsoft has done with Windows Mobile. - HolyChimp, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Only thing I don't like about the iPhone is that it's easy enough for other people to use. It still gets more attention than I do in the pub.
- HolyChimp, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1And as an added bonus, last.fm works in the UK! Probably some other countries too, but I'm not travelling the world with my iPhone to check.
- PilotHead, on 07/14/2008, -3/+4The headline is such bull crap. They sold a million in 21 countries, that adds up roughly to 47,000 per country. Plus how many of them were actually activated?
But still even 47,000 is still impressive. - ElSnuggles, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1I haven't bought an app yet, but i've picked up several useful free ones. The iPhone remote is killer, I love the VoiceNotes and the NYTimes application. I'm even playing with the Contacts app at the root (because it saves me a button press). I've played a little with the Google app (which repackages the web browser), and I've heard that Pandora is awesome.
