- binarypower, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Very nice. I think he also did a small strip in the NY Times for a few weeks before getting pulled.
- davidpotesta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13This is not a precursor to the Simpsons if it was made in 1989. The Simpsons were featured on the Tracy Ullman show as early as 1987.
- elfhat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Yes, Matt Groening created both the Simpsons and Futurama.
- Illuminatus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Heh. I got one of these brochures from the UCLA student store in my undergrad days. I remember Matt Groening used to do book signings for his "Life in Hell" books. He'd actually take the time to do a cartoon inside the front cover page (I still have mine). Nice guy. Deserves the massive success he's had.
- gliido, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Yes, I actually have a copy of this pamphlet.
- carldec, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I also have a copy of a poster we did with Groening. It is called Jeff and Ackbars Communications Hut and deals with Appletalk networking products.
I may scan it in and post it if anyone is interested. - SilentBobSC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'd assume this was ~87 when the SE was released, I remember that year well, we upgraded our 128 to an SE and it was night and day.
Groening had a couple books like this that predated Simpsons "Life is Hell" "School is Hell" etc etc. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Here's a good site to see some Life in Hell comics: http://hell.capefeare.com/comic.php
I think most, if not all, of the Life in Hell strips are in books now. I don't know where to find new ones online, but I believe a lot of free weeklies still carry Life in Hell in print. - WickedOwl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7computer flashback + simpson's creator + apple brochure = fun
+digg - macaholic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3actually the simpsons were first created in 1989 so it wasn't well b4 them
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Groening originally intended to use the Life in Hell characters for his animated show. When he learnt that Fox would retain ownership of those characters he went back and pulled some new characters out of his ass to use instead, and those characters became the Simpsons.

http://homepage.mac.com/mbishop/PhotoAlbum30.html - elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3'Life in Hell' ran for years in the LA Weekly and other alternative papers years before The Simpsons began. I always hope he'll do a series based on those characters.
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I believe those cartoons are lifted directly from his "School is Hell" collection from the mid-to-late 80s, which is still available (see Amazon) and highly recommended. Many of the jokes made it into the first couple of Simpsons seasons.
"Love is Hell" from 1994 has also just been reissued and is available everywhere. Also recommended. - vuzman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4ahh... HyperCard. Now that was a cool application. Anyone who used HyperCard back in the day recognized the potential of the internet.
- ra3ndy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This pamphlet isn't "well before" the Simpsons. The Simpsons debuted on Fox in 1989. For a couple years before that, they appeared in shorts on the Tracey Ullman Show.
Very cool, nonetheless. I'm sure Groening got the offer due to his rising popularity at the time. - stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That brochure really illustrates how Apple used simple ideas (some original, some "borrowed") to sell computing to the non-geeks. *Excellent* marketing they had back then. That made me want to buy an old Mac right now! :)
- elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I got a copy of it at the UCLA Student Store computer department way back in the day. I still have it, sandwiched between 'Work Is Hell', 'Love Is Hell', 'Akbar & Jeff's Guide to Life' and 'The Big Book of Hell.'
- rauser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3640kb should be enough for anyone.
- Profiler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Probably kicking themselves now!
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2heh the technoid is millhouse in the brochure! and the line "hey, where did everybody go" was also said by millhouse when he broke his glasses. funny stuff and very interesting +digg
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4heh interesting, did any of those mac ads actually get published?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1damn, i like to explain black hole theories on conversations :S
- AUGTRON, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You start off in college planning a glamourius future. Two verses of "Pomp and Circumstance" later and your unemployed. Funny How life works.
"The Technoid: Interested in everything but how to dress." - trentrez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Notice on page 15 the technoid character resembles Milhouse from the Simpsons. Shows that Groening had thought about many of the characteristics of the stars of the Simpsons before even inventing the show itself.
- andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to read his Life in hell strip every week in the Chicago Reader paper. Good stuff.
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.simpsoncrazy.com/downloads/shorts.shtml
- richardsnotes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Groening still writes and publishes "Life in Hell" and you can find it in
http://www.funnytimes.com/.
*I have a few of the "dugg" brochures, Apple gave them away at ed conferences they exhibited at in the old days. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I love the RAM specs near the end: "1 megabyte expandable to 4 megabytes."
Oooohhh... that thing's a beast. ;^) - fume, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3anything created by matt groening deserves a digg
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Life in Hell" dates back before 1989. I remember reading it in the LA Weekly when I was a teenager, circa 1980. But to characterize it as a "precursor" to The Simpsons is a bit inaccurate if you ask me. It was simply what he did before The Simpsons.
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1looks like matt groening didn't know what "schizoid" meant.
- tw0bit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Its interesting to see his older cartoons like this
- sotjian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1My first Mac. I traded my Bianchi 10 speed to a buddy for an SE30 with a 24 bit graphic card. I loved that system.
- sketchstudios, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3i think the site is down... anyone got a backup link?
- akifbayram, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4That guy rocks! The first pic reminds me of The Itchy and Scratchy Show.
- oldie1kslowbie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Made me laugh out loud. Shows you just how far ahead of the curve in recognizing something cool Apple was at that time.
- martynelson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This brings back such good memories! I handed out so many of these when I worked at the Computer Shop at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln in the 80's and didn't think to keep one for myself - though I do still have a "Bongo's Dream Dorm" Apple T-Shirt ("Macintosh - Part of Every Student's Dream" campaign)
- MrLobster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The last product made my Apple that was worthy of their hype.
- phlll, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Cool old-school stuff. Still have a few Mac Classics (and older Apple stuff) in the garage that I got off a friend.
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://store1.yimg.com/I/redlightrunner_1879_27186066
- aaplmacguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Alas, Hypercard, I knew him well.
- elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Go Bruins! I got my copy at UCLA as well.
- Chasin_Fat_Kids, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Does anyone remember the D.A.R.E. cartoons Matt made?
- rakslice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I love it! It captures so much of the promise that Apple had during a little slice of time, after the release of the Mac II in 1987 brought expandability and colour support to the platform, that they could never really captialize on by time the mainstream PC mostly caught up in the 90s.
I especially love the mandatory attempt to market HyperCard for something, the 'computing for the rest of us' style command line FUD, and the efforts made to bring the Mac to the edge of affordability (i.e. just use the laserwriter at your local Kinko's). - Tezkah, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2is anyone annoyed at the way this site shows pictures? It fits these images to the screen, which is fine for pictures, but for things with text in them? Makes it unreadable.
Interesting pictures, but poorly presented. :( - detrate, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3oh man... that brings back memorys... not so much matt groening's art as so much the pictures of the computers... but none-the-less good find. Anyone ever play lemonade stand? :)
- Cyrealm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Dang. I forgot about Matt's early works. =)
- volatileacid, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6nice find, definate similarities there!, an interesting precursor to the present day simpsons characters.
- Voodooengine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Very funny.. lol Ram thing is very funny.
