- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -15/+123It's official.
This is the porn site for all Apple fans. - MacGyver, on 10/12/2007, -43/+130You forgot So ridiculous, who the hell wants to sign up for a 2yr contract w/ cingular?
- fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -8/+74June?!?! I want one now!!!
Hell, I'd be happy just to be able to play with one in a store before June.
That said... the two things that worry me are:
1) battery life -- goes without saying
2) 4-8 GB for a widscreen video device? I guess I'll have to wait a little longer for this multitouch interface to appear on the 30+ GB iPods. - __J__, on 10/12/2007, -4/+55I'm surprised it's all called "iPhone"
- hode, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44Yeah, I already have my iPod and my old phone in there. Wait...
- mcflynnthm, on 10/12/2007, -7/+47June? God dammit. LET ME GIVE YOU MY MONEY.
I can't remember the last time I had this strong a desire for a piece of consumer electronics. - zeero, on 10/12/2007, -5/+45holy *****. i've never been an apple fan boy, but this... this... wow.. this will be hard to resist.
- MacGyver, on 10/12/2007, -9/+44@Daveecee
I don't hate cingular, I just don't like the idea of being stuck in a 2yr contract. - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -5/+39I have to admit, I'm slightly let down. The device is phenomenal and I would love to have it, but Cingular exclusive? Give me a break. Cingular SUCKS in NYC, and I'm not paying $600 + $200 to get out of my T-Mobile contract early.
I wonder how it will be getting the device unlocked. Will many of the features be crippled running it on a GSM network other than Cingular? - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35I didn't know I was in the market for a new phone... until now.
- fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -8/+40"... this phone is just not going to sell well."
-------
It absolutely will sell well.
Some will buy it for the fancy interface.
Some will buy it because they're Apple fanboys/fangirls.
But most will buy it because it will become the new fashion statement / status symbol. That's exactly how the iPod gained so much market share. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -12/+44Wow, flag564 doesn't like it? Stop the ***** presses.
- thebaron2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Yeah, the Cingular-exclusive thing sucks, but it looks like it has potential.
My worry is the touch-screen. So far, in my experience, touch-screen phones have been a total pain in the ass when dialing numbers and stuff. I really prefer regular buttons for typing numbers in, but if anyone can figure out a way to make it work it's probably going to be Apple. It also looks large, at least compared to the Razr that I have now. Really thin but the frame is bigger - hopefully not enough to make a big difference in the pocket.
I really want to see one in person now, that's for sure! Very promising. - Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -8/+36I admit it looks impressive, but there's no way I'm paying $500 or $600 for it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35"What is it about Apple products that makes them look so yummy?"
Photoshop. - Retuow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26dammmnnn... the ULTIMATE gadget is born..
- kyoung989, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Am I the only one disappointed that they combined the release of the widescreen iPod with the iPhone? I don't WANT a phone. I'm happy with the one I've got.
How long do I have to wait for a true, standalone widescreen iPod?? - Daveecee, on 10/12/2007, -24/+44@fishbert
16-hour battery life while playing audio worries you? If that's just while playing audio, it should have a very decent battery life while just locked and functioning as a phone.
@MacGyver
You forgot to actually back up your opinion on why you hate Cingular. - corym, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20It's so freaking elegant... I am impressed.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I wonder what Cingular's "data plan" is going to be on top of the bill to use all theses features?
- fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22"16-hour battery life while playing audio worries you? If that's just while playing audio, it should have a very decent battery life while just locked and functioning as a phone."

The way Apple counts battery life... yes.

For all other iPod models:
1. From the main menu, select Settings > Repeat and select the Repeat options until it says All.
2. Select Settings > Backlight Timer, then select Off.
3. Select Settings > EQ, then select Off.
4. Select the album you imported in the step 3, select any song, then press the Play button. The album should play over and over until the battery is depleted. - clinko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Cingular's Data Plan is currently $40/mo.
Cingular's Text and Picture plan is $20/mo.
Cingular's Cheapest plan is $40/mo.
Taxes estimated are $15/mo.
Monthly Total: $115/mo.
Phone cost: $500
2 Year contract
Total cost: $3260
Current plan:
$40/mo.
Current Taxes:
$7/mo.
2 year plan gives me a Free RAZR
Phone Cost: $0
Total 2yr cost: $1128
------
$3260 - $1128 = $2132
Is surfing the web in the 30 minutes a day you're not at your home or desk worth $2132?
To some, it is worth $2132.
Me, I'd rather buy a MacBook Pro, and use it on my couch. - lodleader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15remember, here in a few months, it wont be Cingular anymore, it will be AT&T, again.
- PabloMac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15That was fun...if you're a Cingular subscriber. With the features the iPhone brings to the table, Apple didn't need a carrier agreement to sell them. They have delayed or prevented millions of sales by introducing the iPhone with an exclusive carrier.
- fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18It's a big, bright screen... running a desktop OS... not much volume to contain a battery.
They say 5 hours talk time, and 16 hours audio time, but I'm sure the real-world results are going to be much lower than that (especially if you use the bluetooth function).
What I do like regarding battery life, however, is the ambient light sensor and how the display turns off when you've got the thing to your ear. (brilliant!) - MadOtaku, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Most diggers are not religious. I, for one, don't care if the Quran or the Bible tell me not to get an iPhone. They can ***** off – I'll enjoy my gadgets in hell!
- thorn101, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22Bye, bye Zune.
- Bloc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15those demos are pretty impressive. the threaded sms messages look pretty neat too.
- DeadWisdom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Not going to sell well? Are you kidding me?
I don't think you understand the hold Apple has in the consumer's mind. Everyone and their mother has an iPod, and when this thing comes around it's going to blow people's minds. It will be all the buz; the other cell-phone companies will be kicking themselves that cingular has the sole rights to this. - rqwhitaker, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18I don't know, rather than pay $600 for the phone I'd pay $300 for the iPod only version. Maybe a little less
- imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Suddenly my RAZR isn't such a big screaming deal. This thing cost me $300 when I first bought it a few years ago.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15The thing costs as much as a PS3!!!
I think I'll wait until next January when the prices drop. Remember when the RAZR came out and was like $700? Now they're practically giving them away. Plus, if the iPod's long-term reliability is any indicator, I surely hope that Cingular/Apple is offering more than a 3-year warranty. - distilled, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Funny, it still says Apple Computer, Inc at the bottom of the brand new iPhone page. You'd think The Steve would caught that one.
- vivsriaus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The "pinch" demo where the photo gets zoomed in is pretty cool!
- nerogtr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11dammit, i'm on verizon. also- 4 and 8 GB is a lot of storage for a phone, but not so much for an iPod. my 20 GB ipod hasn't been enough for a while, and was hoping they'd release a non-phone widescreen model. maybe i dont need my ENTIRE music library with me at all times of the day....hm....
- sfgeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12That would imply that microsoft could actually accomplish something in a timely manner. :-P
- timxpx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10okay so in november i buy the cingular 8525 on launch day for $500.
my girlfriend buys me a $350 ipod for christmas
and now they annonce a device thats 1/3rd the size of both combined and does everything the both of them do. great. - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You know, for a decent smartphone, $500-$600 is a pretty typical price.
A regular phone... the kind I was expecting them to announce... *way* too expensive.
But for a smartphone? Rather reasonable. - SpacemanSpiff01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Has anyone noticed on Apple's homepage if you slide your cursor over the slide on the phone's screen it actually unlocks it?
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9humperdeath,
they are negotiating with Cisco for rights to the name.
"Given Apple's numerous requests for permission to use Cisco's iPhone trademark over the past several years and our extensive discussions with them recently, it is our belief that with their announcement today Apple intends to agree to the final documents and public statement that were distributed to them last night and addressed a few remaining items," Cisco said in a statement obtained by CNN. "We expect to receive a signed agreement today." - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8My only compliant is the lack of a mini-SD slot.
- IanPhillips, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Last time I checked I can't carry around a ps3 in my pocket
- hammerattack, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Aaah, but which came first: The pr0n, or the fans? I have yet to actually buy an Apple product (other than music on iTunes), but as time goes on it gets harder for me to justify not buying one.
I'm soooo not gellin'.... - dreamcode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I was just thinking the same thing no 3G.
Here in sweden its all about 3G.
Gsm.....so old news.
other than that it looks pretty cool. - bunit03057, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@BassCadet
"People want an MP3 player and a phone, not an MP3 player, a phone, a portable movie studio, a PDA, etc."
I do am I not a person?
Just because you don't like it (having not even used it) doesn't mean everyone won't. - alternative724, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9its about the size of an ipod.
millions of people carry those in their pockets
dont forget its also really thin.
(beaten) - dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Warning: Link is NSFW.
- dpcdomino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Let me vent please.
I love my iPod because all it does is play music and videos.
I love my phone because it is real small and sounds clear. I do not use the other feature.
I like my camera because it takes great pictures.
This jack-of-all trades approach kinda bites. I do not need a toaster that tees up my golf balls. Can we please have a widescreen iPod without the phone BS and at least 30 gigs of memory?
Thank you - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Actually, they probably did.
Especially with things like the visual voicemail picking."
Please, I'd rather lose the visual voicemail thing and have them sell it as an unlocked phone. Do people really get that many voice mail messages that they need to pick and choose who they hear first? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9" I will be getting an Iphone as soon as I am able, it beats the crap out of any other phone out there."
How do you know? They're not on the market yet. They could suffer from many many glitches that you would have no way of knowing about yet. -
