Next-gen iPhone spotted in the wild?
engadget.com — Well here's an interesting one. French iPhone blog iPhon.fr got these pics from an anonymous and unverified source, and while there's no way of telling if the shots are legit, they certainly have a truthy ring to them.

- 5hocker, on 05/02/2008, -5/+192If this were any more fake, it would be Pamela Lee's *****
Look at the apple logo? The shadows? Pleeeeease.- unconfirmed, on 05/02/2008, -3/+5Agreed. But only in hope. I think I'd give it a miss if that turns out to be true.
- ucg1, on 05/02/2008, -4/+53True. Apple isn't capable of making a phone that ugly. At least I hope they aren't.
- jasongdx, on 05/02/2008, -8/+28But if this were official you would say it's gorgeous.
- danz32, on 05/02/2008, -4/+5Exactly. They say its ugly now, but if Apple were to release this exact phone tomorrow, everyone would call it the greatest thing since sliced bread.
That being said, its probably fake because Apple has been going for the silver/black look lately
- danz32, on 05/02/2008, -4/+5Exactly. They say its ugly now, but if Apple were to release this exact phone tomorrow, everyone would call it the greatest thing since sliced bread.
- Konstantino, on 05/02/2008, -1/+1I think a design like that has a lot of potential. To make it Appley, just add a metal back instead of the black and suddenly it becomes gorgeous by a hurdling number of Apple fanboys.
- ashwin100, on 05/02/2008, -4/+2You obviously haven't checked out their new iFruit Phone.
THINK Simple.
THINK Minimalism
THINK Overpriced.
Maybe you are a To$$er.
- jasongdx, on 05/02/2008, -8/+28But if this were official you would say it's gorgeous.
- TheWorm, on 05/02/2008, -1/+20Agreed. First off, they would never release a phone that is uglier than the current one, and the thing that stands out the most to me is how it is shorter on the top than on the bottom. I know that one of the things Apple intended in the design of the iPhone is for there to be symmetry when it is turned sideways. Afterall, this is the company that added a functionless screw to the left side of the Macbook so it would match up with the other side.
- badjoke, on 05/02/2008, -1/+1There's a move toward tapering though. Look at the Air.
- xtraa, on 05/02/2008, -1/+151. Look at the scratches. This is a heavy used device. too heavy for a possible 2.gen iPhone time-frame.
2. Also the homebutton is not adjusted exactly parallel to the screen.
3. Applying any 'Edge-Filter' in Photoshop you will notice a heavy glow at the right side of the device.
= fake for me.- subliminalurge, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2I didn't go into quite the forensic detail you did, but I did hold my iPhone up to the screen for a quick comparison. Everything seemed to be in pretty much the same place. My impression was that this is just a run of the mill 1st gen iPhone that someone has taken a black sharpie to in order to cover up the metallic surfaces.
- andburn1, on 05/02/2008, -11/+1But it's beautiful! What I love about it is that it finally looks like a PHONE. The iPhone looks like an iPod with a touch screen, which is obviously appropriate. But I would still be much happier if it looked like a phone. Like this. I love it.
- TheKrillr, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2The iPhone isn't a phone. It's a portable media device with PIM, telephony, and soon 3rd party applications.
Most people call that a PDA.- richardiscool, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3Most people call that a smartphone.
- TheKrillr, on 05/02/2008, -1/+1A smartphone has a primary function as a phone. The iPhone's primary function is not telephony
- richardiscool, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1Yes, yes it is.
- VinceNoir, on 05/02/2008, -4/+1PDAs are for overweight, balding middle managers who don't have a clue how their devices work. Media devices are for thin, well styled, hipsters with every bit of a clue how their devices work and how to hack them to do other things. Like me.
- richardiscool, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3Most people call that a smartphone.
- TheKrillr, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2The iPhone isn't a phone. It's a portable media device with PIM, telephony, and soon 3rd party applications.
- Charlotte_Web, on 05/02/2008, -1/+30Is that supposed to be a real hand? Puh-leeeze.
- VinceNoir, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2And so you strike again my arch-nemesis! The hand is most obviously a real Apple design. Not the sleek look and feel that Microsoft Hand lacks. I think this hand will "just work" instead of needing a bazillion gigs of crapware just to be able to twiddle it's thumbs.
- priegog, on 05/02/2008, -4/+10...And the pixels. I can also tell by the pixels.
- VinceNoir, on 05/02/2008, -1/+1Watch it. Next you'll be saying, "I know this! This is Unix"!
- ophello, on 05/02/2008, -2/+19"Look at the apple logo? The shadows?"
Whats wrong with the shadows? There's a real phone there. Its the front and back of it that have been altered, not the shadow from the phone itself.
You idiot diggers always think you know what makes a photo fake. Most of you have no idea what you're talking about.- VinceNoir, on 05/02/2008, -5/+3Dugg for calling diggers idiots. I wholeheartedly concur. Being a Slashdotter myself...
- priegog, on 05/02/2008, -1/+4You know that by posting here... it makes you... yeah. I have a /. account too, but I don't particularly enjoy being labeled. But since you do... you're just meh.

- whitesaint, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1And look at the slideshow next to the article about the engadget award winners. There's a 3G iPhone that looks almost identical to the one pictured.

- ludwik, on 05/02/2008, -1/+128It's ugly - I really don't think Apple would release product looking like that. More likely it's just one of the Chinese fakes.
- placidified, on 05/02/2008, -0/+7i prefer the aluminum back...imagine the scratches on this.
- Firehed, on 05/02/2008, -1/+1Aluminum scratches, but in any case the lighting in the photo is way too crappy to tell whether this (assuming it's authentic) is black plastic or anodized aluminum. Sure, plastic would scratch a lot more the alu, but if the back of my iPhone is anything to go by then it's certainly not immune.
- championchap, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1Really?
Had mine for half a year now and the back is scratch free!
The front does have 2 though.. one down by the home button and another in the top right corner so it's not really very visable.
- championchap, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1Really?
- Baryn, on 05/02/2008, -4/+1My WM phone is plastic, three years old, and not a scratch on it (plus it does a whole LOAD ***** more than the iPhone). Also, the "aluminum" on the iPhone is actually high-grade plastic. O NOES APPLIED!
- VinceNoir, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3Yeah... but running a whole LOAD ***** more crap isn't exactly something to brag about. I don't want choice, I want quality.
- Baryn, on 05/02/2008, -3/+1You've never had a Windows Mobile phone, you sad *****.
(hint: I get both) - VinceNoir, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1@Baryn
Congratulations for being wrong yet again. Windows Mobile phones suck ass. I don't want to constantly have to reset my phone just for it to work.

- CJUNIT, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4Wasn't everybody saying the same for the "fat" nano before its release? I no longer here any complaints...
- Laxaloot, on 05/02/2008, -1/+5I still think the fat nano is uglier than the thin one.

- TrainingName, on 05/02/2008, -2/+1That's what we think of everything.
If we look at an image of an iPhone that's been used or handled by people a bit, it'll look ugly with fingerprints and everything.
When we see it in an advertisement, where it's most likely just sitting in the middle of your TV or monitor, and most likely computer generated, THAT'S when it looks beautiful. Because it's fake.
- placidified, on 05/02/2008, -0/+7i prefer the aluminum back...imagine the scratches on this.
- sruffelman, on 05/02/2008, -10/+4Isn't it supposed to the thicker than the current model?
- musters, on 05/02/2008, -15/+1Looks like little competition for RIM's rumoured iPhone killer that should convince any business savvy person to laugh in the face of apple's hardware
http://www.thestar.com/Business/article/420586- bigsteve, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1I don't know where to begin with your comment. You linked to a non-technical article about a "future" RIM phone, called it an "iPhone killer" (because nothing's -ever- been called an iWhatever killer before...) which is an ugly clam-shell with "faster wireless technology" and "an improved browser." the iPhone's getting 3G, and has MobileSafari which is based on webkit, arguably the most advanced mobile-scalable web rendering engine available now. And for my money, MobileSafari on the iPhone is about the best web experience you can get, and trust me, I've used plenty.
Not to mention the fact that if you had half a clue, you'd put "iPhone" and "enterprise" together in a Google search and in seconds, you'd have every self-respecting tech journalist detailing all the new features iPhone software 2.0, due in June, will have that will put it neck-and-neck with RIM's devices... Activesync Exchange integration, remote wipe, Cisco VPN, etc etc etc. Especially when combined with the inevitable 3G upgrade.
But any business savvy person would know all that.

- ascheinberg, on 05/02/2008, -4/+9I don't mind the look and feel, but it doesn't look as attractive as generation 1, and that's seems a little suspect. This does not look like current Apple products either, nor does it have the metal, silver inlay on the front that recent reports suggested it would.

- uberamd, on 05/02/2008, -1/+18Clearly not real.... whats with everyone getting hard over potential new iPhone pics? Just wait until Apple reveals it, never trust a pic of a phone in some 13 year old nerds hands that he photoshopped to get 'internet cred'
- Firehed, on 05/02/2008, -2/+2Internet cred for posting a fake? I think his "internet cred" would be a lot higher for being the first to leak the real thing.
- uberamd, on 05/02/2008, -2/+3Yeah but think about the popularity that picture is getting now. Clearly he doesn't have the real thing, but by pretending to have it he gets his 15 minutes of fame.
- Firehed, on 05/02/2008, -2/+2Internet cred for posting a fake? I think his "internet cred" would be a lot higher for being the first to leak the real thing.
- mpineiro, on 05/02/2008, -1/+10Looks like it could be a photoshopped LG Vu. In any case, it's far too ugly for Apple to release. Let's just relax, I'm sure it will look great when we finally see it. I'm excited enough by the prospect of 3G, GPS, and possible lower price.
- TH3W1R3D, on 05/02/2008, -0/+9They should have taken the pics with the screen ON.
- IHeartYourMom, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6But that would give away the fact that its not a real iPhone!!
- ddfall, on 05/02/2008, -8/+2If that's the new iPhone, count me in. It's not something I would give my first born for but I can't wait to see what they've added and if I can get it on my carrier (Vodafone UK) with out a hack.

- allemande, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3You're fake
- joehassler, on 05/02/2008, -6/+37I don't believe these are legitimate pictures. My first reactions:
1. It looks boring and ugly. There's no way in hell Apple would release an iPhone that cosmetically looks bland compared to the previous model.
2. This could possibly be a test unit, using a bland design to avoid attracting attention if used in public. Or just a Chinese rip off.
3. I'll buy a first gen model if this is what the next iPhone looks like. The "iPhone" in these pictures looks terribly windows-ish.- Takuro, on 05/02/2008, -2/+4I didn't know an operating system could look like a phone.
- InorganicMatter, on 05/02/2008, -2/+17Absolutely no way. It is far too blocky, and doesn't have the excessive amount of curves required on any Apple product.
- ophello, on 05/02/2008, -4/+2did you pull that one out of your stupid ass? cause it reeks of stupidity.
- InorganicMatter, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2Nice. I always like it when someone has a good convincing rebuttal with solid quotes and links to back it up.
Go back to bed, kiddie.

- ophello, on 05/02/2008, -4/+2did you pull that one out of your stupid ass? cause it reeks of stupidity.
- nmyra, on 05/02/2008, -3/+1No way. This doesn't look in line with Apple's design standards. I love all the hype building though!
- CokeBear, on 05/02/2008, -3/+11Careful about including your fingers in the picture. Steve will zoom in, identify you by your fingerprints, and then you'll mysteriously disappear. Only your fingers will be left behind as a warning to others not to leak Apple products.
- Cargo8, on 05/02/2008, -0/+8definitely fake. u can see all the noise near the logos and the screen looks photoshopped on.
- m4lomb, on 05/02/2008, -3/+1EXTRA! EXTRA! All iPhones are now being designed by programmers....
- Flatlineskillz, on 05/02/2008, -3/+1It looks like a blackberry that they photoshopped an iPhone-like screen onto. The dead giveaway is the long earpiece speaker on the top. It looks exactly like the ones on blackberrys. I will say I am getting worried about all the talk of glossy black plastic backs on the new one. The metal finish was one of the things I liked best about 1st gen iPhone. All I want is the current look with 3G, GPS, and maybe video capability. Im willing to do without video chat. Thats what I want steve. Put it out there and you and AT&T can have my money and I'll send you a christmas card this year.
- airj1012, on 05/02/2008, -4/+2I say fake. Besides it being incredibly ugly, the screen is much larger on this model than the first generation (look how close the screen gets to the speaker at the top of the phone) and why did they write iPhone on the back? Would someone really be confused as to what this is if they saw it?
- rdas7, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2Current iPhone says iPhone on the back.
- airj1012, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3Sorry, obviously I don't own one, I was going off the one on the Apple site - http://www.apple.com/iphone/gallery/index3.html
But I still stand by it being ugly and the screen size.
- rdas7, on 05/02/2008, -5/+3Hang on, there's something that looks pretty real to me: upon closer inspection there doesn't seem to be any obvious photoshopping going on (like an easy insertion of the Apple logo, or iPhone tag). If they are photoshopped, then kudos to whoever made them, they paid attention to the details (such as the subtle perspective on the word 'iPhone' on the back).
Secondly, if you look at the front image, you can see (barely) the thinner chrome frame that's been rumored. The pics look a little underwhelming simply because the detail of the image is poor.
Thirdly, this design fits in exactly with the manufacturers specs leaked earlier for new cases.
Fourthly (if we are going there), the design and form factor echoes the Newton...
***that was the sound of nerds everywhere exploding***- ophello, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3Its a photoshopped LG Vu. Youre done.
- odiego, on 05/02/2008, -2/+1Come on...Straight up from Guangzhou!
- thewinelover, on 05/02/2008, -4/+3What cracks me up is that everyone here clicked on the link to look at the picture(s)... and now everyone's saying, "Just wait until Apple releases it... can't trust a picture before it's released"... Too funny... you guys wanted to see what the 3G iPhone looked like BEFORE it came out now didn't you??? So, why even LOOK at the picture if you can't trust what it looks like? Sheesh.

How can you not have the exact specifications and visual styling information burned into your ***** brain? Its Apple for ***** sake! Storing memories like these should be higher brain processes than controlling any of your bodily functions.
I can't stand Apple fanboy douchebags. So, bury me for "thinking different" about your blind worship of a consumer product.
- ophello, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1uh....the curved top and bottom? are you blind?
- benjhaisch, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3Its a Chinese fake.
- DipDog3, on 05/02/2008, -1/+1Mirror Link for iphon.fr with translation: http://www.redrome.com/news/3-rumors/11-the-3g-iph ...
- digitallysick, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2I am going to go with "real" reason being the last time with the "fat" ipods no one thought they were real. Same with the multi touch pad macbook. It might not be the finished product , or a test/demo model before final production
- ophello, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1right. dont bother realizing that the LG Vu looks exactly like this and has obviously been photoshopped -- just truck on with your chosen delusion.
- alansky, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2Definitely a fake. The Apple logo is much too wide, and the back of the case is totally scuffed up, which would be very odd for a shiny new prototype.
- BadMammaJamma, on 05/02/2008, -1/+4FAKE. It is scratched to hell. My iphone is a 6 months old and it has not even 1/8 of the number of scratches on it.
- marioguy, on 05/02/2008, -1/+0Look's more like a prototype to me.
- migbike, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3i'm pretty sure apple would leave the logos off of a test unit...
- kjcramer, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1They are going to a plastic back mainly for radio issues...reception, GPS, etc. And since when does apple have a problem selling shiny plastic that scratches all to hell in no time? Anyone own an iPod before 6 months ago?
- BlueStarr, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Another vote on this being a fake. That and Apple would make it mo pretty mo pretty.
- rowlodge, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1really easy to get anything "laser sketched", these days.
- FecalHurler, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4No Ackbar ASCII? I'm dissapointed, Digg.

- AppleGeorge, on 05/02/2008, -2/+4It looks like an LG Vu with an Apple logo and a home button.
- pyrates, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1That looks like they took a cheap plastic case and spray painted it black, definitely a fake.
