- neekolas, on 09/25/2008, -6/+108Dear Kevin Rose,
Is this true?
Sincerely, The World. - wastern, on 09/25/2008, -3/+55please do not remove the full DVI port from the MBP. Having to use a dongle for everything is a pain in the ass
Also, add a docking port so I can drop my laptop into an dock for home use with a monitor, then pop it off to go on the road. Hooking and unhooking 10 things every time you want to come or go make for a huge pain in the ass and is why my laptop rarely goes anywhere.
and digg. fix your comment box. its jumpping all over the place as i type and am currently typing blind as its going big and small trying to expand to my text, then deciding against it. pushing save should be a fun game. - Radan, on 09/25/2008, -0/+21That is kind of the whole concept of the regular Macbook. If you are not playing games, there's absolutely no purpose for the regular computer user to pay extra money for a graphics card that won't be used. Instead the Macbooks got a rather fast processor.
If you need to run high end apps, you should buy a Macbook Pro. - tmike7223, on 09/25/2008, -6/+21that's what she said
- Mahoney07, on 09/25/2008, -10/+24Too bad the Macbooks will probably still have ***** integrated graphics.
- bobartig, on 09/25/2008, -1/+11All FireWire 800 is backwards compatible. All you need is a 9 to 6 pin Firewire cable. They have different plugs, but are pin-compatible formats.
- Gr1nch, on 09/25/2008, -1/+10HDMI is a divine instrument.
I think it was reverse engineered from Megatron. - ozziek, on 09/25/2008, -1/+9Yep that'll be cool. Lots of smears all over the screen. Score!
- Mahoney07, on 09/25/2008, -1/+7No. Many LCDs have a DVI but not HDMI
- jakatak, on 09/25/2008, -0/+5it bounces up and down as you type when you get to long winded in the comment box.
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5about as complex as a USB A to B cable; where you been?
- digitalpencil, on 09/25/2008, -1/+6Slot-loading blu-ray drives cost around $900 and Apple (with the revised Macbook) are attempting to create a new contender with an aggressively low price point.. they are not going to include a blu-ray drive. USB 3.0 is not available yet (it was only 90% complete last month) and having a res higher than 1440x900 on a 15" screen will restrict the ability to distinguish characters at sizes 11- for those of us not blessed with 'super-sight'.
- crowbar77, on 09/25/2008, -14/+19Wow was expecting some pictures at least...
- drunkenoaf, on 09/25/2008, -0/+4Ah, that'll be why Apple is considered to by stylish and cool, and selling all those units.
Firewire disk mode. Genius move by Steve Jobs... - zeebo, on 09/25/2008, -1/+5DVI to HDMI cables are cheap and easily available. It would be better than having to use a proprietary dongle
- summer0f89, on 09/25/2008, -2/+5@ digitalpencil. i have super sight and i want 1920x1200 on a 15in. nuff said.
- beisball28, on 09/25/2008, -15/+18sweet, now I get to carry around another adapter dongle!
- c010rb1indusa, on 09/25/2008, -3/+6agreed, put a hdmi output on that bad boy, but that will never happen, they want to protect the apple tv, and what about usb 3.0, bluray, a higher rez 15 inch screen? if apple addresses all these areas, no doubt will it be the best notebook out there
- jamesarice, on 09/25/2008, -0/+3Haha
- Verdanic, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3Those are really very expensive. All they do is re-rout the inputs on your laptop (from the side of your machine to the back of the unit itself), and it's freaking $300. It's like DVI KVM switches, they're just ***** switches yet they cost $150+, while VGA sits at $30. Same thing. I'll never understand this.
- kiwimonk, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3Why not give her your crappy gma one and get a new one.
- Raptor007, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3I like the DVI output on my MacBook Pro, but I wouldn't mind having HDMI instead. However, it'd screw over people with 2560x1600 DVI-D dual-link monitors, since HDMI is a single-link technology. If mini-DVI supports DVI-D dual-link, that's the better choice; you can get an adapter to HDMI.
Definitely agreed about the high-res display. I went 17" for 1920x1200 goodness; if that res was offered in 15", I might have gone for that instead (although I don't know if you can cost-effectively cram that many pixels into a space so small).
mr.gates is right about Blu-ray; playing movies from disc is a huge drain on any laptop's battery life. Rip some DVDs before you travel! Not that a Blu-ray drive would be a bad thing to have once they're more cost effective, and it'd certainly be a nice OPTIONAL feature. Bad idea for a standard feature though, at least right now.
USB 3.0 is not done, so don't complain about that. And I don't see a reason to drop FireWire, especially for something like eSATA which is far less flexible. - JeffH, on 09/25/2008, -0/+3Because Dell and HP aren't as hip. Apple throughout the 90s created a hipness to their brand. It was upper echelon stuff that was more expensive and only trendy artsy people owned them. Then Intel Macs came out and that trendyness was bestowed upon the masses. Apple doesn't have to do anything to sell their products because people are so infatuated with how cool they are.
Plus they are incredibly secretive and the fanbase has a love/hate relationship with that fact. - stukdog, on 09/25/2008, -2/+5Rumors = Usually not true
- theaverageidiot, on 09/25/2008, -2/+4NO!
...
Ah, *****... - mrsteveman1, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Leopard has resolution independence, the screen res could go much higher and you could still have the UI the same size or a size comfortable for you to read, even text.
- Taiyoryu, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2The Dell XPS m1330 got decent hype
The Dell XPS One, not so much good press but still it garnered attention
The Dell Linux offerings also tend to get good press here as well. Speaking of which: http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/l ... m1330n is a nice little machine.
So can it about Apple getting all the hype. Heck it's not even all good news for Apple either around here. Just look at the iPhone. It gets mixed reviews especially lately with regards to the app store.
So any company that produces technology that stands out and is regarded as good in some fashion will be dugg. - Mahoney07, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2I'm not paying $2000 to play computer games. Apple sucks.
- malibusurf, on 09/26/2008, -2/+4jesus this has to be one of the biggest non-stories ive seen on digg. the link essentially alludes to: "The design will be have elements that are in all the other recent apple products!!" - A REVELATION! fancy a company that is known for its design having similar product designs! and "some ports may be removed! -but compatability will remain!!" amazing!
- Radan, on 09/25/2008, -1/+3I think HDMI would be a much better choice than Mini-DVI seeing how at least with HDMI you would be able to connect something without the use of a dongle. Besides as far as I know HDMI is far better than DVI since it also supports audio and the actual port is smaller and overall better designed.
It wouldn't surprise me though if Apple actually switched out the DVI for a HDMI-port, if anythings since it fits better with Apple's image and way of thinking. - Verdanic, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3They're... available. Get one. If you wait for the newest all the time (this applies to everything, pay attention boys and girls) you'll just never end up getting one. Sometimes you can delay being outdated by six months, but really..
- thedragon4453, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2I have never understood why they don't do something like the dock you mentioned. It seems like most people are using Macbooks more and more as a main computer, and using external monitors and peripherals at home.
I bought a Macbook a couple of months ago and use it for this. And yes, even though there are only about 4 things I hook and unhook everytime, its quite a pain in the ass. - mikesaint27, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2Dont worry man, just got my new black macbook today.
Probably a stupid decision, but whatever updates are in the new one wont take away from the fact that I have a nice notebook. The new touchpad will be cool, but I already have an iphone. Faster processor, stuff like that, whatever, Ill just be using this for work and class.
It will definitely bother me a bit because I like to have the newest thing like any other gadget lover, but oh well, I'm fairly sure that there wont be anything in this update that makes my black macbook obsolete. - tiuk, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2If you think about it though, if they're just going to use a proprietary mini-DVI port, why not use HDMI instead? It's still a smaller footprint, and at least this way HDMI-to-DVI adapters are cheap and plentiful.
- SLockhart, on 09/25/2008, -1/+3Too bad Mac users who have no intention of playing games or editing video files buy MBPs anyway so they look cool.
- Overcyn, on 09/25/2008, -0/+2too obvious.
- randf, on 09/26/2008, -1/+2WWKRD?
- Morfine, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1its gonna be confirmed october 14, we just hav to b patient for the next couple of weeks
- Abatrour, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1$$
more cables and something else to plug in... great. - dmadip, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Thank you for the link. I was not aware that Michael Dell trolled Digg to tout his new products.... interesting
- nolz, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1Physical size of the display doesn't matter. Native resolution does. Mini-DVI supports up to 1920x1200@60Hz.
- mrsteveman1, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1You, sir, are the first to wonder i assure you.
- ath1337, on 09/26/2008, -2/+3too bad we have to wait until October 14th
- Jswanko, on 09/25/2008, -0/+1buried because i fell for it, also its old and played out.
