- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14More Mac fanboy crap. Here are the facts:
1. For the 95W or so that the iMac consumes at full load, you get about as much light as a 15-25W light bulb, not a 100W bulb.
2. The Mac uses a florescent cold cathode tube to produce light, that means for the same amount of light, you could simply use a ~20W cold cathode florescent light, and save the pesky 65W the CPU is using. Plus, the light would be omnidirectional, not just coming out of the screen.
3. The Mac is more compairable to a laptop than a desktop computer. Why? Because it uses a Mobile CPU, a mobile chipset, and mobile graphics. The only desktop components it uses are the hard drive and RAM, both minor power consumers. The 95W it consumes is much higher than most laptops. Factor out the gigantic screen, and it is still at 65W. This is higher than the similarly speced MacBook Pro.
Please, do some reasonable fact checking before submitting these articles! Its like an article saying the iMac is a better way to heat your home than a furnace because
1. The iMac puts out heat.
2. The iMac uses relatively little electricity. - LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's kind of what I expected. Most of those components in the iMac are probably laptop parts to begin with. The CPU and the GPU are, for sure.
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I bet my "Windows" make more light than your iMac!!
Haha -- get it. Windows? lol - GeneralAntilles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My G5 tower (dual-2.5GHz, 1.2TB, 3GB RAM, Geforce 6800 Ultra) pulls about 675-watts with both CPUs at full, and the disks running. I think I win.
- peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Interesting, but headline and blurb don't match the story.
- randylovin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A $1300 lamp, that saves me money..........quick, someone figure out the ROI. lol
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4No, I couldn't. All of my lights are fluorescent and typically consume 12-15 watts.
- vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I thought Apple switched to the Intel chip because it would not be so hot as the PowerPC chip??"
Well if they used a 1.33GHz intel Core Solo it would have been much colder than a PPC.
Apple had to improve performance, not temperature. If they tried to put a dual-core G5 in a PowerBook, the case would have melted and the processor would have burned out. The 1.8GHz intel core duo is equivalent to a dual-core G5 yet it only generates a little more heat than a single core 1.33GHz G4.
The MacBook Pro can be 3-4x faster than a 1.33 G4 PowerBook with maybe 1.5x the heat.
There may be situations where some application can only use one core at a time, but that leaves the other core free to do other tasks (ie: playing a video or browsing the web while you are waiting for a long HD video to transcode). - lemz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is pretty lame... comparing a what essentially is a tablet pc without a touch screen with a full desktop is stupid. If anything, you should compare G5 desktop to a pc power consumption. Then it will be on the same grounds.
The quality of digg articles is getting worse and worse by the day :( - chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"No, I couldn't. All of my lights are fluorescent and typically consume 12-15 watts."
Ditto that.
I have wondered why the older type bulbs still exist and why people still buy them. CF bulbs pay for themselves at least twice. Once in that they last long enough to justify their cost. Second, in that they save enough in electrical cost to purchase them again. Traditional bulbs, therefor, over the same period of time, are two to three times as expensive as CF bulbs.
Why do people still buy traditional bulbs - and in mass no less? - spiffyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ radicand
"So the article author wants an apples to oranges comparison of desktop to laptop power consumption? Meh."
Ummm... dude, the iMac is a desktop machine.
I don't think I'm green enough or a tech-dweeb to care how many watts an iMac uses... - ubermorph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1aznboi04k:
The point of your comment is?
I believe Intel deserves the props, not Apple. What have they done to improve power consumption? When you buy an Intel Core Duo, you will be getting the same power usage. Anyone can install available laptop parts into a desktop form factor and call it energy efficient, not just Apple. No digg for a fanboy article. - wjadams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know...a lamp is pretty sweet. I can turn it off and on. I think I would prefer the lamp. Especially if it's a lava lamp...groovy.
- thehutch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hmm 99p for a lightbulb, or £1500 for a macbook. Well i guess your average lightbulb won't run OSX. Impressive stuff.
- das7282, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who cares how much power it draws as long as it can do what I want it to do. I mean how much are we talking about here, less that $1 a month on the power bill? Good then in 141 years it will pay for itself. Apparently Mac fanatics have to brag about how much power the iMac draws (or the lack there of) because they don't have anything else to brag about.
Like I said, "who cares?" - ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well... what did you expect... it's running on laptop parts.
- perkelation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, the intel imac is a more like a laptop than a desktop... (mobile chipset)
- Gargot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Incandescent light bulbs are so inefficient that some people claim that the word "light" should be removed and that they should be called "heating bulbs" instead..
- bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1isn't Core Duo a laptop chip? and the iMac is basically a laptop with a stand?
- Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wouldnt that hurt your eyes staring at a light bulb.
- ConorKiley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Modern compact fluorescent are far superior to the old ones. My whole house uses them and I can't tell the difference. There's no flicker or buzz and the spectrum output is nearly the same as incandescent.
- Pottersquash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sooo, i will be staring into something more powerful than my light bulb. Nice to know
- Jamezes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Crap... Wrong article D:
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FYI, car headlights are about 65 watts. Do you think your iMac is as bright as one of your headlights?
...and that's *65* watts, not 95. - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is ridiculous and false. The amount of light put out by the iMac does not match the amount of light put out by a bulb of 95+ watts. That's a ludicrous suggestion. If it did, then you wouldn't be able to stand looking at the fscking screen because it'd hurt your eyes. If you want to save power, get a lower wattage bulb...chances are it'll still be brighter than the LCD screen on your iMac.
Geez, I'm still trying to recover from the utter stupidity of this article and its false conclusions. - ajz8182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Read the bottom of the article!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....the new mac even gives handjobs when powered on.
- michaelstone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"In digital arts, I was standing next to my teacher's desk and I was right next to the air outlet on his G5. It was like standing behind a freakin jet exhaust...in hell. I'm sure you could heat your room up with one of those."
Funny... I have my G5 on right now, it's been on all day, and it's not any hotter than the room temperature. How odd.
""I think his point is that the iMac, a desktop computer, uses less power than any other desktop computer. Somehow I actually doubt he is telling people to use iMac's instead of lightbulbs. It's just good to know that by using an iMac, we're a tad bit less dependant on the whole energy/oil revolution."
Wow, you are a moron."
Thanks for adding to the discussion with your well placed comment. I'm pretty sure that is what he was trying to say, that it's nice to know a desktop computer can still be energy efficient and not suck in 500-600 watts. - Gargot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or you could just buy compact fluorescent light bulbs...
- PayneX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Idiotic
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Well, I do have these things called "windows".
And I guess I shouldn't have said "All of my lights". 95% would be more accurate. There are usually one or two full spectrum bulbs in each room."
you typically use your light bulbs during the day? otherwise, how are you going to get much light through those "windows?" well, if you do, then you're not saving much money. ;)
i'm more worried about what type of light i have at night. fluorescent light makes me sick to my stomach. not to mention, it can't be all the healthy--can it? i mean, using a phosphorus coating which illuminates when introduced to ultraviolet radiation. why not just drink an ounce of mercury while you're at it!? :P - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2What a stupid article. HTF do you use a iMac as a light source?
The poster needs a kick in the balls for wasting everyone's time. - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol @ spacebar14. nice one, man!
- halophoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. The Apple haters are out in force. Freakin lamers.
For crying out looud people, read the article. "wahhwahhapplefanboycrapwahhdiggisallapplewahhh" cry me a ***** river, the article's from INFOWORLD. And if you crybabies don't know enough to at leat take into account the source of the article, you're all obviously dumber than you're already making yourselves look. - Enderend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even though my AMD notebook runs on 90 peak watts this guy doesn't care unless it's a desktop. radicand was right this guy wants to compare apples and oranges. I'm sure his new Macbook Pro is great--it must be for him to want to sit alone in the dark with it and bask in its 95 watt glow.
I notice that he's not bragging about the battery life, though. My laptop runs out of juice in under 3 hours. I bet the slim Macbook Pro doesn't get better than that. - nargilamonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still I wonder, is it worthwhile to query about the light output of an LCD screen? It's not as much as a plain bulb
- moonaust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am now going to install OS X on a lightbulb......iMac doesn't use laptop parts, check it out some time.
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Well, he just got ass raped on a price tag, so he's trying to justify it somehow.
A+ for effort I guess. - yeahright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jozer99>> Speaking of getting your facts straight...
1.) iMacs use DDR2 SODIMM RAM chips. In case you didn't realize, SODIMM is a laptop RAM standard, not desktop... Though what i've just said does help your claim further, you were still wrong. Do your research first, just like you said. - timeshifter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"imac = laptop. end of story."
Didn't you mean "imac == laptop" or "imac != laptop". The iMac is a desktop. See http://www.apple.com/hardware/
I agree, it's awesome to have a machine that powerful that is that effecient. I want one, but I'll wait til I can run Vista on it. - matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0maybe more effient then a 300 watt easy bake muffin oven light bulb :)
Plus doesn't anyone notice the irony... power is what you want and you won't get more power if u put in less power (law of conservation of matter) So in other words the Mac is as use ful as a light bulb
YAY i can turn it on and off - Sixcolors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think if someone were going to give me either a light bulb or an iMac, I'd take the iMac. Based uppon my current living conditions of course. Now, if the sun were blacked out by some giant space debris.. then the light bulb would seem more relevant.
However, power consumption of an iMac. Not bad. And certainly more relevant to some people than to others. The whole of San Francisco, for instance. I've never met so many earth-concious hippies in my life. ;) They're cool, though. When I go home for school breaks, I forget that my parents don't have a recycling bin. It almost seems crazy.
And as a final point; the fact that he purchased an iMac tells me he's not what you would call "high-end". A graphics editor or some such would probably pick a G5 and damn the power usage. - cathode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0imac = laptop. end of story.
Secondly, I'm willing to bet that it would make a helluvan inefficient lightbulb.
Still, it's an awesome thing to be able to compute at those low power consumption levels. I'll digg it. - vlsi0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I now can live my life to a fuller extent- oh wait, no, its actually something for macults to be proud about, interesting maybe, but boring...
- medieval, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this means that the light bulb industry has really been raping us all these years. how far away are LED bulbs?
- rakslice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What wonderful irony! People choose incandescent light bulbs chiefly because they are cheap and ubiquitous, despite their inefficiency. That's why comparing the iMac to an incandescent lightbulb (and likewise to a standard PC) is, well, like comparing apples to oranges.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0maybe schools should get imacs they can use the price they'll save on electricity to help cover the cost of the mac. It may not seem so but computers in schools suck allot of juice which costs $$$.
- Comsamvimes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, but can I use it to bake cupcakes?
- Jamezes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Is It Warm In Here?
As suspected, the MacBook gets warm - warmer than my G4/1.33 Powerbook. If you're using the MacBook on a table or some other heat-dissapating surface, you'll have no problems. I don't recommend that you sit this baby on your lap, because you'll get uncomfortable within twenty minutes or so of regular usage. The keyboard is warmer than the G4 1.33Ghz Powerbook."
I thought Apple switched to the Intel chip because it would not be so hot as the PowerPC chip?? - youareretarded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"this means that the light bulb industry has really been raping us all these years. how far away are LED bulbs"
They already have them but they are expensive still. - degree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In digital arts, I was standing next to my teacher's desk and I was right next to the air outlet on his G5. It was like standing behind a freakin jet exhaust...in hell. I'm sure you could heat your room up with one of those.
