New iTunes Features: My Alerts and Complete My Album
macrumors.com — Apple introduced two new features in iTunes today. My Alerts is custom page on iTunes which lists "recent releases from artists whose work you've purchased on iTunes." and "Complete My Album" allows customers to purchase the remainder of an album for a discounted price.

- FregTK, on 10/12/2007, -8/+54This is a feature that is made possible by the digital download model and should have been there from the start.
Better late than never I suppose.- AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -15/+26it's nice, but drop the drm, and we're good to go.
otherwise, it's bt for me. - raynar, on 10/12/2007, -24/+46Will iTunes help me search Limewire to complete my album?
- asuraci, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Does the "My Alerts" work with anything in your library, or does it have to be things bought from their store? It could be extremely useful, but if it only checks items you've bought directly from them, well, I'm screwed.
- skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There is a bug in the Complete My Album feature relating to pre-ordered albums.
I pre-ordered an album, giving me a single, and the ability to be able to download the entire album when it was released. The complete my album feature only sees the single, not noticing that I actually bought the entire album. - optimuscrime, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50Do people seriously use Limewire still? I understand the whole "I don't feel like paying for stuff" mentality, but...
BitTorrent = free food at the place where your friend works
Limewire = looking for food in the dumpster - willynilly, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5Great. Just as Microsoft finally gets rid of their infantile "my" this and "my" that, Apple STARTS with it?
Welcome to My 2000, Apple. - aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@willynilly: I don't know if you are trolling or you don't get the distinction. The "my" in this case is not being used in the "filesystem" but rather in reference to managing "my" content in "my" account in an online service. iTMS may be wrapped inside an application but it is essentially a SOAP based webservice rendered in a custom thin client interface.
You are comparing Apples to Oranges I'm afraid. - Muchocoffee, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4Why is AssProphet being dugg down?
He speaks the truth, Apple fanboys. Don't let your fanboyism blind you from the truth.
Down with DRM! - smspence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7muchocoffee:
It's not Apple's fault that there is DRM. Because of the current situation with the RIAA, they have the choice between selling music with DRM, or selling not music at all. Selling DRM-less music is not an option for Apple. Did you ever read that open letter from Steve Jobs on that issue?
http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughtsonmusic/ - DJCult, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Willy: I meant to digg you down. Pressed 'up' by accident. I needed you to know that I was digging you DOWN.
- AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -15/+26it's nice, but drop the drm, and we're good to go.
- binderhead, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Better late than never, but at least this will get rid of all of those people who complain because they can't get the album only tracks, even though they bought most of the songs already.
I hate those people when I'm trying to get non-robotic, less analytical reviews of an artist or album without reading through review sites.
I don't know that I'd use it, but hey, someone will benefit and it took Apple twenty minutes to build into iTunes. +1 digg for that.- chrisgeleven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Doesn't help for those of us who already own the CD, but iTunes has one extra "album only" track that isn't on the CD.
Prime example off the top of my head: Linkin Park's "My December", which is available on the iTunes version of Hybrid Theory as an album only download, but isn't available on the CD version.
- chrisgeleven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Doesn't help for those of us who already own the CD, but iTunes has one extra "album only" track that isn't on the CD.
- APErebus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Finally, A useful addition to iTunes. Seems like they haven't made any major improvements in a while... Or maybe thats just me
- naio21, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2Maybe yes, maybe no... who knows.
- chrisgeleven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7They did redesign the iTunes store a little bit when iTunes 7 came out. Otherwise, your right, it has been awhile since new iTunes store features have been released.
- assassinmaids, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1It's a bit unclear...
Is it a discount in that they won't charge you for the tracks that you have already bought or is it an EXTRA discount on top of the credit that you would get for already bought?- patik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1And couldn't you end up getting the album for less by buying one song, waiting a day, then taking the special offer to buy the rest?
- cgomez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No. What are you talking about?
If you had previously bought "Promiscuous" from Nelly Furtado, you can now get a $1 credit to the purchase of her full, award-winning album. It will download all of the songs except that one when you purchase it. - Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Say an album sells for $9.99 and has 13 tracks.
If you bought two of those tracks for $1.98 then the Complete My Album would cost you $8.01 - assassinmaids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@cgomez: I see now. I thought that you get the credit and an additional discount.
- Halifax1, on 10/12/2007, -72/+1I HATE iANYTHINGS ONCE A WEEK A NEW iSOMETHING IS OUT

- thinkart, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25hey halifax1-- ever thought "maybe i shouldn't click on that apple related link to that apple related article"? MAYBE IF YOU THINK 1ST BEFORE YOU CLICK, YOU WOULDNT HAVE TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS!!

- mightycbu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2SEEMS LIKE ALL OUR CAPS-LOCK ARE STUCK!!!!!1!!11!!ONE!
oh no, just some idiot trying to get his point across
- nace33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31Now, if they would only do this with TV episodes!!!
- wipis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Would this apply to singles? Because if I buy a single then it comes out on an album and I want to get it I don't want to have to pay for essentially the same song twice. Good content but this article could be better.
- notarebel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I've bought a few singles, and yes, it lets you complete the album. It does not apply to EP's though.
- notarebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ riksweeney
Not in my case. I bought the Long Distance Call single from Phoenix before the albums release, and it's now letting me complete the album.
- rladley, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Too bad it's a limited time offer.
- BlueDjinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I think you're misunderstanding the terms of the "limited time offer"--
The feature appears to be permanent; the normal offer will be good for 6 months from the date of purchase going forward.
The "limited time" refers to the fact that they're temporarily waiving the 6-month limit (allowing you to complete albums purchased more than 6 months ago).
- BlueDjinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I think you're misunderstanding the terms of the "limited time offer"--
- crtjer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Very cool idea, don't use iTunes that much but does anyone know if the new artist release system only works with iTunes purchased music or does it also work with CD purchased music?
- notarebel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Clearly it's music purchased on iTunes Music Store only. How would they be able to distinguish between music you purchased and music you've downloaded?
- crtjer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3DRM? I just was asking a simple question, don't have to freak out about it and its not the album complete feature I'm talking about anyways.
- notarebel, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1There's no DRM on CD audio! Unless you're talking about the few CD's out there with copy protection, and even then your question still doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
I fail to see how I was freaking out. You say you weren't talking about the album complete feature, okay fine, so you would have been talking about the other new feature, My Ratings. If you had just READ the article this would have been made clear (I quote, "A custom page on iTunes which lists "recent releases from artists whose work you've purchased on iTunes."). On iTunes. - starbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@crtjer
I think the alert feature is not iTunes purchase dependent. I think you browse for an artist and sign up then.
Let me check (why spam the comments with a thought I can just as easily prove)
yup. I have never purchased No Doubt (through iTunes) but I can create an alert for them. Though I don't see a page listing them, and the macrumors link doesn't work.
But, the Complete my album? It even works for albums I got with free pepsi points, it seems.... - Phearce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@crtjer -- Good question. To clarify (since @nota went off on a tangent): will the "My Alerts" feature work with my entire music collection (ripped CDs and iTunes purchases), or is it solely looking at iTunes purchases?
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a few songs I got from CDs from my library, and there is no complete my album feature for it.
- shmurfect, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7How about a simple wishlist already? That's been on my wishlist since iTunes' inception.
- Hulacat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9An easy way to make a wishlist is to just create a playlist, name it "Wishlist", and then drag songs directly from the iTunes Music Store into that playlist. When you play a song in that list, the 30 second sample for the song plays, and then when you're ready to purchase it, you can go straight from that list into the store.
Of course, that doesn't help you if you'd like to be able to share that list with others, but as a helpful list for yourself, it works just fine. - GCarden, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0There's two ways to make a wishlist in iTunes:
Either enable shopping cart (under the store tab in the preferences), or create a playlist and drag all the songs from the iTunes store you want.

- chimpadink, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1You see...the internet is this series of tubes...
- bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2How about have actual podcasts show up in "podcasts" on my Ipod, and not my podcasts show up in "shuffle tunes"? Ugh.
- chrisgeleven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Never happened to me. Make sure you iPod has the latest firmware.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Or an older iPod. I have the 1st gen, I also have podcasts come up on shuffle. As noted, new ones do not do that...
- mapin0518, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0question: is there any way to see all previous purchases I've made in itunes ? It would be nice if they showed that under account settings or something..
- eteyemd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just make a "recently purchased" playlist and it will show all of them. Actually, this is one of iTunes default playlists. This should work for you.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It is, fittingly enough, in your account settings. Under Purchase History.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not sure if "recently purchased" will show all your songs...but a smartplaylist with .mp4 should work too.
- eth3l, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Really, you can't do this wioth iTunes - what crap. Its pretty easy to check what songs you purcahsed n Zune Marketplace.
Apple 23213874319498725 - MS 3 - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2yes, there is away, and it is under account settings, there should be a "purchase history" somewhere.
It would be nice to re-download past purchases, I don't understand why Apple doesn't add this feature. Considering that the song must be authorized for your account, downloading it once or 1000 times shouldn't make a difference, it can only be accessed on up to 5 computers. I bought the song, I own it (in the sense that anybody really owns music IP), Apple has the file sitting on a server somewhere, why can't Apple put it all together. - eth3l, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1You can re-download lost downloads in Zune pretty easily. and if thigs get all FUBAR'd, the cstomer service people are really nice about credting your account and resetting the download count.
Apple 23213874319498725 - MS 4 - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"downloading it once or 1000 times shouldn't make a difference" - Topher06
But who is supposed to pay for the bandwidth for the 1,000 times you download your .99 cent song? Should Apple just cover the tab because you're too lazy or foolish to back up your purchases?
It's 2007. Take responsibility for your own data.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1And the latest in Apple computer's new 'features' at their store:
"Empty MY bank account"...a feature that allows Apple to purchase, for you, everything they decide is in your best interests....until all your money is spent.
After all, you paid all that money for the highest-priced computer hardware...so you must be pretty gullible!
But that is understandable, for those people who would have a hard time learning how their machine actually runs, if they had to fix it periodically.
Apple machines are perfect for old grandmothers and little kids, especially if they have money to burn! - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1And new from the people who gave half the people in my town I-pods to use constantly....
the NEW i-Helmet...a total sensory isolation apparatus that combines earphones, screens in front of your eyes to watch videos, and a special cover for the nose and mouth that simulates sensations.
So now you can block out reality around you completely, and go about your life in ignorance and fake-bliss....until the world around you collapses and crushes you.
"Constant music and pictures of your choice= freedom from the drudgery of nature"
"You, too, can be an i-moron! And besides, you will help make us richer at the same time...so it's a (lose)-win situation."
we only have your best interests in mind.- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Isn't there some conspiracy thing going on that you need to adjust your tinfoil hat for? You sure seem to enjoy spending time writing crap about products you don't use. Seems like a colossal waste of time to me, but hey, it's your iKharma.
- edstate, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Now if they can only make "getting info" on my songs, importing a CD or even scrolling through my library not so ***** excruciatingly SLOW... I might enjoy managing my music again.
- eth3l, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5Zune rolled out with the 'complete my album' "feature". You could buy track piece meal if you want.
Apple 23213874319498725 - MS 2- kirk06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5How 'bout you stop your 'cutsie' little counter thing.
It's annoying. Period. - eth3l, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2kirk06:1
eth3l: 0
- kirk06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5How 'bout you stop your 'cutsie' little counter thing.
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I'm still waiting for iTunes to download a single piece of artwork that is missing in my library, despite being logged into my account and selecteding the "Get Artwork" repeatedly. Also manually assigning artwork tends to crash iTunes in Vista. How about Apple works on better Vista support before adding nice, but mostly superflous features like full screen coverflow.
- CheeseheadDave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you've changed any of the ID3 tags, such as the genre or artist name, the automagic cover art download probably won't work.
- graywolf323, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1seems to be glitchy, its offering to complete albums that I already have complete (even stranger for the ones that I bought complete off iTunes)
- hotinhurr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0How about a feature where they actually answer my request for certain songs to be added to the iTunes store?
- grandalf, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1iTunes is so broken on Vista it's ridiculous... but then Vista is broken too...
- imsobored151, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My alerts has been out for awhile.
- steve693, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Will I be able to redownload my previously purchased song(s) when I use the complete my album feature?
- alefox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok, so if i buy a song from an album that contains 20 songs, i buy 9 more songs. Now I want the rest, with the .99 credit does that mean i get the rest for free???
- y2048, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't seem to work that way unfortunately. I've got two albums of which I bought 10 songs each, and neither is offering me a "complete this album" option (which would've otherwise allowed me to download 3 songs for $0.09).
I guess they set a minimum price for your remaining songs, and once you go below that you're SOL :-(
- y2048, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't seem to work that way unfortunately. I've got two albums of which I bought 10 songs each, and neither is offering me a "complete this album" option (which would've otherwise allowed me to download 3 songs for $0.09).
- SWCarson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is a great feature. One question though. As I'm looking through my "Complete My Album" list, I'm finding a lot of albums whose full price is $11.99, $12.99, $13.99. Is the "Complete My Album" feature the sugar to help the bitter pill go down of variable pricing finally being introduced?
- SpacemanSpiff01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Albums have been variable for a while now. (As long as I can remember.)
- monosyth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have 402 albums to complete?! I guess I use iTunes alot... most of the albums are $6-9, and there are plenty that I wanted to download the albums in the past, so i am in love with this new feature!
- mjsteinbaugh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Now that Apple has introduced this great new feature, their next step should be to let users download any single off an album and get rid of this "album only" nonsense.
- illwil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agreed.
I want just one song, unfortunately it is only available as part of the artist's "Collection". I would have to pay $149 just to get the one song.
No thanks.
- illwil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agreed.
- crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool, but I think I'll stick with last.fm - more music, and I don't have to buy DRM'd crap.
- mechanisma22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It at first sounded like "Pimp My Album" then I read it again and it said Complete my album. I love this feature, I've had so many songs I've bought and then bought the album only to have duplicate songs and less money. I just bought the rest of the 30 Seconds to Mars album for a dollar off.
- igutekunst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You never see a comment with a lot of digg's near the bottom? It's a steady progression to the crap comments with -65 diggs. I have a feeling I might join the club. What happened to the good old days?
- 5plic3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm happy as long as they don't add "My Documents" or "My Computer" :p
- brainxs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Dugg. Nothing particular, but still interesting for me.
