- monsterofNone, on 10/10/2007, -7/+65cuz you need component video out to faithfully reproduce that low-def compressed video on your huge TV screen.
- Cowfrommars, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Wow, this is great news. By 3rd gen, it looks like the new iPods will be awesome.
- abid786, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Digg probably deleted you for a reason.
- ramcosca, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9What do you mean by 3rd gen? The now-called classic is on it's sixth gen and the nano is on it's third... what do you mean by that?
- kilodelta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9how many Lori's are there in India?
- deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10With the right upscaling 640x480 will look pretty good. Definitely better than composite video.
- monsterofNone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8so you're pissed about a product you don't own and won't buy?
might want to try decaffinated. - imatt, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10I've been using my iPod and a cable that came with my camcorder to watch shows from my iPod on TV for about a year now, what's new about this?
- FDL1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7 "Word on the street is that the video out function on the new line of iPods is locked if used in conjunction with old video cables and docks from third parties. Apparently, the new iPods will only work with cables featuring Apple's authentication chip, leaving long time video iPod owners in a bind if they have iPod video gear lying around."
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7"component video output is supported only by the 3G iPod nano, iPod classic, and iPod touch (480p or 576p for the former two, only 480i or 576i from the iPod touch for some reason)"
That has to be some kind of oversight or misprint, why the hell would they put lower quality output on the higher end iPod, makes no sense for any company, especially Apple. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The iPod classic supports component video out too, so unless 160GB is too small for your music & iPod Video collection I think you'll do fine.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You need a component cable for 480p. That's enough reason.
Besides, it does slide shows too, and most camera pics aren't so compressed as to look poor at 640x480p. - Cowfrommars, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7In a portable device? I think it would be harder to add HDMI than Component. - and more expensive.
- colto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I think he means iPod Touch's 3rd generation.
- DelMonte, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6"New iTunes 7.4.1 out.
Guess why."
To improve the component video out feature on new iPods?
Oh right, it doesn't have anything with this topic... How about you post that in the ring-tone hack thread instead of here? - ReXorcist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Welcome to the World of Tomorrow!
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The new iPods do not output video through the headphone jack as you are currently using, only through the 30 pin.
- Cowfrommars, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yeah, sorry, I was kinda thinking of the Touch as a new iPod, like 1st gen, if you get what I'm saying.
- bigdoof, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7The difference is that you can no longer use your old video accessories.
From http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/ipod/review/apple-ipod-classic-80gb-160gb/P8 "But it does fail to do something simple and fundamental: unlike the fourth- and fifth-generation iPods, it refuses to output video or photographs to an external TV or other device unless it’s connected to something that contains an Apple authentication chip. "
Built in obscelence! Don't worry, the RDF will spin this into a feature, not a detriment. - DelMonte, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I'm impressed and surprised that the tiny iPod nano 3rd gen can also output 640x480 composite and component video.
- jdoggxperience, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You shall stand corrected.
Absolutely not... you might be thinking of the trailers... those go up to 1080p... - HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's true. Not a misprint.
- WhoDey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Since when does 480p qualify as HD? Last I checked, the three standards known as "HD" were 720p, 1080i, and 1080p.
- Seph7, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I'm pretty sure for something to be 480p HD it has to be 16:9 with 480 vertical pixels. The new nano can only support movies with a max res of 640 x 480 which is a 4:3 res meaning its not 480p.
- FDL1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Meaning you can't just plug in the old (read: standard) 1/8" to RCA video cable and expect it to work (a la old video iPods).
- sn00kie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Just did a live chat with apple and asked them. It wont let me copy and paste but here is a snippet.
Lori:
Yes ok, I have just confirmed it will work for your iPhone. Please don't worry!
Me:
so even though the iphone icon isn't there, it will still work
Lori:
Yes, please don't worry. It does match up under the specs for the iPhone
Me:
Where did you find this
Lori:
The same place you did, and I have access to the tech specs - OHiggins, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And pay out the ass. Flash memory is getting cheaper but it's not that cheap yet. Don't blame Apple blame the tech.
- jazzyinco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You WILL buy one. Steve says you will. Don't fight it.
- Zippo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't movies on iTunes come in 720p?
- noeljohnhoward, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2they could easily have a hard drive in the ipod touch. it would just be a little chunkier. id actually not mind though really...
- whataboutdave, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Why third gen of touch then? The first gen hasn't even shipped yet, so to say that the third will be awesome is premature to say the least.
- mrchin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Apple's cables have been less expensive than others' video cables all along. Nineteen bucks compared to twenty five.
Also, what imatt fails to notice is that the new ones support COMPONENT VIDEP. That''s not your SVideo or composite yellow jack. Component is for possible HD content and uses the Red/Green/Blue channels of video into new TVs. So, yes, it is something new. - badtz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2This is not true. the component cable only carries the video on the new iPods, and for the iPhone only AUDIO. There's a little disclaimer on the page regarding this. Interestingly, the same disclaimer is not written on the page for the video out cables via composite.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Thats what MiniHDMI is for, in the new 1.3 standard.
- DatoeDakari, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I don't think you could really consider it sacrificing with as much as 160 gigs of space.
- buggu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Don't count it. The whole purpose of MKV is to conveniently store a DVD movie file in one place. That means it's a standard for anime and DVD rips, so it's never going to see mainstream usage. Besides, an MKV allows for all sorts of codecs to be used in the file, while what the iPod supports is extremely limited in comparison. With the current system Apple converts all media to one standard format so it's easier to work on compatibility.
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2So, like, just to be super clear here, please don't worry. Please. Don't do it.
- DatoeDakari, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Like the product description says, it's probably mostly for personal videos and picture slide-shows, not necessarily for full length movie watching.
- DatoeDakari, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2480p is not HD, it's SD, it has nothing to do with the aspect ratio. Anything above 480p it is HD.
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I've done that as well. Much better than dropping $100 for the Apple cable, eh? It's sad that you can't do that with the new ones. They overprice their accessories.
- Proggie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2because by adding component out, they broke almost every existing 3rd party AV accessory. This truly sucks! I didn't know this before I ordered my 160GB classic. Very disappointing to read the reports of all the accessories no longer working.
- pixelperfect, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wouldn't there need to be an onboard TV-Video Chip? Therefore, if the iPhone doesn't have one, no firmware update is going to magically add one.
From what I can tell, they were able to add a TV-Video Chip to the new iPod nano's cause they are large enough to fit one. - HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The new Nano is smaller than the old one (both of the old ones) and if you saw the takeapart, there's far fewer chips inside than in the previous Nanos.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I dunno. Why does one have Bluetooth and the other doesn't? Why does one have a speaker and the other doesn't?
They're similar. They're not exactly the same. - NeoRicen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No it's not, the iPod touch comes with an adapter for the universal dock and all the promo material shows it placed in the Universal dock, it's too think for the iPhone one and doesn't need the speaker holes.
- Zippo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I do indeed stand corrected. That's a pity.
- illustrick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1this is completely and utterly worthless, why would you want component out of a ***** video?/audio?
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Freakin' everything should support .mkv.
But to be honest, the biggest case for supporting mkv is so you can have h.264 video and AC-3 audio. And since the iPod doesn't have AC-3 out, it still wouldn't be able to play them. - st3vo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Now only if the new iPods supported x264 .mkv files..
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2No they don't. And if they did, there's no guarantee these iPods could play them.
