- jamsea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is it ever possible to have the "new" iPod? They'll make a cooler one next week...
- pyrodude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the diagram shows that it is an ad-on like the iTrip or my favorite... the laser pointer and flashlight... actually had to use the flashlight when the power went out at work and it was pitch black..... iPod to the rescue
- taggerung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@syuusuke
It's not an accessorie it's built in to the iPod - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I propose a docking system for the iPod, just like shoving a tape into a tape deck of the car radio.
- lukaso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's not a bad idea; to add RDS to the a iTrip type like product, But it's still an FM transmitter, and it's still gonna sound like crap, unless Apple can convince the FCC to allow stronger FM transmitters it's just a waste of time, Get your ipod plugged in direct or don't bother. Plus you still have to control your ipod directly. I don't think Apple will ever ever release any product that uses this technology.
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another misleading, bad headline. When you say that iPods are going to be "wireless" 99% of the readers instantly think "oh it's going to work with bluetooth or wi-fi to transfer music wirelessly from my computer to the iPod". But no. It's a built in FM transmitter. Totally different.
I think that is a brilliant idea for the iPod to have this built in. I use my iTrip everyday, and only have to change the output channel every once in a while when I drive longer distances. Sure the sound isn't the absolute best, but I'm not one of those people who needs music in a car to be anything more than listenable, and it delivers. The only problem is that it drains the iPod battery very quickly, but a $15 dollar car charger cable fixed that problem quick. - stenspect, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3More like when you can change the battery (period)
- KillerJ59J, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1No, lame is the encoding engine. Get this ***** right!
- cmirza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Before reading the article, I thought this was going to be some new technology to stream iPod audio along with ID3 data to car stereos. But this is just ID3 data sent over RDS along with the same ***** FM modulated audio. FM Modulation is *****. Even out in fairly rural areas, an iTrip sounds horrible.
AUX input jacks are what is needed. Not ***** RDS data with FM modulation. And certainly not some $400+ option which forces you to navigate through your music with BMWs unintuitive stereo interface. Just give us a simple $5 AUX jack so people can plug their MP3 player into their stereo and listen to music that sounds as good as it possibly can. If you want to through in something extra, put a USB power jack next to the AUX jack. But don't think you're doing the consumer a favor with something as bogus as ID3 data over RDS. And definately don't think you can outdo the iPods own interface with some half baked stereo integration. - neuros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i'm still waiting for bluetooth and a bigger screen.
- MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can get iPod docks for your car. My dad works for the local chevy dealership and he told me a lot of the newer cars have iPod docks built in. I told him that was a retarded idea because they just alienated everyone with an mp3 player that's not an iPod. He agreed with me. A line in would have been a better idea. Then it could work with almost any audio source in existence. And Apple wouldn't release an iPod with this built in for at least another year. It would be the 6G iPod and there's no sense in releasing an updated version 3-4 months after the previous version.
- bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Imagine walking down the street, and Bam!- "Receive MP3 file from Daves_Ipod?"
I hope someone hacks it so they can do that. - 2gunnZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think its just a clever way for the men in the black helicopters to track where you are.
- allegory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0new source of link is more informative
- Big_E103, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet!!! :)
- losslesshead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think this is going to happen until MWNY. Honestly, Apple just came out with new iPods- and I think the focus here at MWSF will be a mac mini media center!
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great another new iPod, watch another one come out the next week after the wireless one. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with apple? I want a Music player, not some wireless junk device, not an mp3 player that shows me photos or one where I can watch videos. Screw this, they are not getting any money from me. (I only have 1 iPod)
- werns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Aren't FM transmitters illegal in some countries?"
Yup. Most of the EU. - FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's the Invisia I'm waiting for!
- blairp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and i just got a 5g one :(
- gambl0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0TheRealStyro is right - Not all FM transmitters are crap. The Monster FM transmitter that connects to the iPod's dock connector is incredible. I live in an area close to radio towers and all other FM transmitters I've tried have had tons of interference. The Monster one rules... just a little more pricey.
Since Apple has this patented, that probably means only an 'official' Apple FM transmitter will be able to send the tags via RDS. Which is too bad, because it would be a lot nicer to see a new version of the Monster transmitter with that capability. - dolby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wireless? What will happen to itunes + will it have a web browser?
- pyrodude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0put batteries in i mean
- pyrodude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or you can plug your ipod into the cigarette lighter ... or get the adapter so you can do that... i think i saw one once somewhere...
- secretivecoward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"patents to send mp3 data thru the air?
lame."
agreed.
"The patents indicates"
????????????????????? - drjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So I can get a car sterio that recieves the new data stream info or I can keep the inexpensive one I have with it's direct line in jack.. hmm... I have been looking for a way to decrease the sound quality and looking at the ipod screen is such a hassle compared to looking at another screen right next to it.
-drjones - merlyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Portland Oregon market is something like #45 in the nation, and I too am finding it hard to use my FM transmitter for my iPod (Monster cable version, otherwise very nice). Seems like just about when I find a good frequency to use, I pop over a hill (many in Portland) and start getting the "interference" squeal. This sucks.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Sorry, I'm not buying one until I can charge the battery wirelessly."
I'll sell you one... It will cook your nads and other flesh while charging your iPod but that's okay, right? - saftaplan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Aren't FM transmitters illegal in some countries?
- kenbalogh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lame!
- paulypopex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I digg it a bit, it's not transferring songs to the ipod wirelessly though is it, just a built in itrip...
- tomi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When'll these be in store?
- e3mw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple has only changed the ipod once a year. I mean look at it. The photo and the 3g were out at the same time. the 3g was out two years before the photos were consolidated. And now the videos have taken their place. As long as you stay within the market ranges (that meaning that you either JUST have an ipod or JUST have a mini or JUST have a nano) then in that respect Apple has not released anything within the margins of a year that "Replace" them, per say. Stop knocking a company for making progress. We live in times where technology changes literally every day. If you're unhappy with your ipod because Apple makes a newer one, I garantee you that someone will still want yours. Whether it's the newest model or not.
- MarkStrube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What in the world... first rumors about XM, now built-in FM transmitters. What crap. Before they add any of these perks they need to add support for Wi-Fi. I want to be able to update my playlist without plugging it into my computer. I want to be able to update my podcasts, trade songs, or buy from the apple store anywhere I have wireless. That would be MUCH more useful than making something built-in for which there's already NUMEROUS accessories for. No digg. Stupid Apple.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"patents to send mp3 data thru the air?
lame."
I agree the patent situation is lame, but you have the US govt to blame for that. Also, Apple need to patent EVERYTHING they do with respect to their market leading product as there are a million Creative's out there willing to play patent games to get in on the act rather than design a decent competitive product. - killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yet another ipod... looks like the Gen 5's are obsolite.. about time they came out w/ a new model... youcant even buy a regular ipod anymore. an ipod that just plays music... ***** apple
- ministewy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"it's not new features, idiot. It's 300-400 replacement products that come out every few months"
I may have misunderstood, but it seemed to me that you were angry that they were releasing new products too often, so I simply reminded you that you aren't obliged to give them your cash every chance they give you. I apologies if you thought i was trying to criticize, or it came across the wrong way. - blanoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how soon till we start seeing targeted airvertising to our wifi video ipods? oh joy
- donsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds dated. FM sound is pretty crappy. Maybe it's for another reason.
- MarkStrube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry but Apple is not keeping up with technology. They're riding the hype wave, incrementally releasing iPod's with one or two new features to make more money. They should've added WiFi & Web support years ago. They're still a big business, sadly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"If you don't care about new features then don't buy it..."
- ministewy
I bought the iPod because I liked the features. I was the first person to say the iPod would have integrated wifi access way before the 5G debuted. How you think I don't like the features of the iPod is beyond me. - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*dissapointed*
I was expecting Blue Tooth headphones or something like that.
FM modulators suck. - ShaunJordan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want my wireless electricity!
- ChadKirchner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0American cars only recently have had RDS support, and it's not across the board. A lot of cars in the EU do, however.
i'd rather have a more integrated solution. What I don't understand is the companies that only have iPod adapters need to do what Acura is doing. They have an AUX-in on the new TSX, so anyone can plug in their music player, and they're going to offer an iPod adapter as well for other functionality, including charging of the iPod. Why can't they offer both? - mpegcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it would be cool
- igutekunst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The new 07 corvette radios will have an aux jack to plugin your mp3 player of choice... somebody is gettin the idea..."
Definitely... - crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shoud have built-in WiFi technology like the DS, so people can stream others' music.
- yanokwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Sorry, I'm not buying one until I can charge the battery wirelessly."
Inductive charging: http://www.splashpower.com/ - Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The corvette is getting an Aux Jack in 2 years and this is somehow news?
there are tons of cars out there NOW that have aux jacks in them. - battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The real crap lie is that FM out-of-band is wasted by "most" radio stations.
True. Except for the Clear-channels. Those stations actually USE the out-of-band area to broadcast other important, yes digitally, data. And isnt the Clear-channels that Sheeple really would want to hear anyway? -
