Let me fix that for you:
"vorbis person: give up already!" - eclipxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4vorbis had its chance. Ask a regular person (i.e. non digg reader) if they know the difference between aac and ogg vorbis and you'll get a blank stare. People don't care about Vorbis (outside the geek community) and it makes no sense for Apple to put effort into supporting it.
- celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Would it kill Steve Jobs to include an actual changelog so that people know if something that has bothered them has been fixed?"
No kidding fmaxwell..... CHANGELOG JOBS, CHANGELOG!!! - BenStockwell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4How about a firmware update that allows Ogg Vorbis and FLAC playback?
- BenStockwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"vorbis people: give up already!"
Never! - opus20745, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone who has used Videora to convert larger files, be aware that this update causes pausing and audio dropout with those videos. Either stay with what you've got, or use Nero Recode or Quicktime Pro to reencode until a fix is out.

- telomere7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check out this comment by acemilo on page 10 of this link from ilounge.com. I tried it and it works:
Does anyone want to know a fix on how to downgrade without restoring? It's very simple.
Steps:
1. Make sure you have the 1.0 installer still installed (start - programs - ipod - old installers - 2005-10-12)
2. Open up your favorite hex editor NOT NOTEPAD OR ANOTHER TEXT EDITOR IT MUST BE A HEX EDITOR!!! If you use a text editor you WILL hose your ipod
3. Open the file in your hex editor (iPod drive):iPod_ControlDeviceSysInfo Please note this is a hidden directory so make sure your pc can view them
4. Look for the line buildID: 0x06108000 (6.1) and change it to:
buildID: 0x05108000 (6.1)
This will fool it into thinking the firmware is outdated.
5. Run the older updater and it will say firmware is out of date (1.1) and will give you the option to update instead of just restoring.
6. The updater will run as normal as if it were updating and when it is finished you will have v1.0 firmware again
I just tested it and it works 100%, the video bug is now gone. I was going to keep it cause the menus and everything were fixed but the video bug was just too annoying for me. Once they fix that and release a new firmware I will update, but until then, 1.0 is better for me. - 0Ut0jBMaFMmI41, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For all Vorbis-Lovers and Bug-Haters: There are two better inofficial firmwares for some models of the iPod:
http://ipodlinux.org/Main_Page
http://www.rockbox.org/ (Not yet ready for the iPod, it takes some more months) - kevbryant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1guys, three letters make all those other formats go away in apple's mind: DRM.
- Xenoxi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't Apple release an individual changelog for each different version of the firmware? Anyone know the changes to the 5G? It's slow as hell..
- ArcticWolf_0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, new firmware...and my "select" button doesn't work. Great.
- fmaxwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The only problem that I've seen in the older 5G firmware is a reluctance to turn off while/after playing some videos. You can hold the play/pause button down until your finger turns blue, and the iPod stays on. A few times, I've had to go back to the menu, select an audio track, and then turn off while that plays. Others have reported the same problems. I hope that this firmware fixes that.
Would it kill Steve Jobs to include an actual changelog so that people know if something that has bothered them has been fixed? - Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
I'm a little cheesed that the new FM/headphone/remote adapter supposedly won't work on the 4G iPods. I lost my headphones and was interested but apparently (according to the Apple website) it only works on the iPod (with) video and the Nano. - hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah the gapless playback problem is the only thing I'm bothered about fixing, but seeing as I have an ancient 2yr old 3G iPod I guess I'm screwed. Never mind, by the time I need another one, in a year ot two's time, they'll probably be up to 15th Gen
- treomeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The firmware upgrade fixed the bug with the wireless remote not forwarding/rewinding BUT now I loose audio a minute or two into watching a movie through my TV (audio goes away for some reason). Essentially, they fixed one bug and created a bigger one.

I sent in for the $50 over the summer and haven't heard anything about it yet. I wonder how long it'll take? Any one else get the settlement yet? - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Downloading now
- MikeF2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"In my case, most of the videos that I converted with Lathe would stutter after 30 seconds or so and then continue without audio."
Me too, all my videos play for about 30 seconds and then pause and continue without audio. In some cases the audio plays but not the video. - ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, I still have that video turn off problem.
- thidranki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0did anybody get the bug where u would select an artist on the iPod, then it would automatically select an album, even if u have other songs not in that album?
- MikeEFresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To fix the gapless playback problem in iTunes (but not on the iPod), go to the Preferences, then playback, turn on Crossfade Playback and set it to 0.
- andronin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The backlight thing sux, will update but I do not think I can use the auto-off properly.
Also anyone notice how out of date the iPod feedback page was? :( - staan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0“More importantly, it gives people another way to put content on the iPod without buying the content through the iTunes store. MP3 was a must-have because people won't buy a player without it, but don't hold your breath waiting for Apple to start supporting other formats with no DRM.”
ipods will happily play unprotected aac audio files. if you rip your cds to aac with itunes, it produces drm-free files.
don't make like this is some sort of ***** conspiracy. - Chimichanga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"did anybody get the bug where u would select an artist on the iPod, then it would automatically select an album, even if u have other songs not in that album?"
Good to know someone else noticed it. For now I just added a ***** field to all the songs that didnt have albums. - RacerX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Any answer on the ipod video shut down issue? Bueller? Bueller?
- greygoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Have they fixed the "gapless playback" problem?
I'd like to listen to The Beatles, Pink Floyd etc without annoying gaps inbetween the songs. - mementh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0update... seems to be working on my 30 gig... no issues whatsoever watched a mpeg4 (not h.264) coded Episode of SG1.... so who knows
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I await the day when I can see what a song is rated by simply glancing at the ipod screen. I HATE having to click a few times just to see if I've rated a song or to check its rating.
On that note, I also await the day when we can customize the main "now playing" screen to show or hide tag info. (year, rating, etc) - Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Just think, if Apple finally enabled Ogg Vorbis playback on the iPods, and gave the iPod video owners the option to add the Divx codec for a fee (through the iTunes Store) for Divx/Xvid playback on the iPod, it would be the death of both iRiver and Creative.
Why won't Apple deliver the deathstroke? Why not take out their two "biggest" competitors in the MP3 player market when it would be so easy to do? Gawd, Microsoft certainly would not hesitate if the shoe was on the other foot. - mementh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well it looks like i am not updating.. no reason to really.. come on people.. apple.. you have a great idea.. flesh it out
- JFetch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0''I just want to know what it changes on the 5G ipod !!!! Eberybody in here is only talking about the 4gs"
On my 5G video it fixed a problem where when you rewind video the screen would freeze until the audio was back where it was before you rewound it. It now fast forwards very quickly now. I at the end of rocketboom in about 3 seconds. - carebearwarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just want nested folders of playlists, just like in iTunes.
Please? - celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guys, how long does it take you to update your 5g 60gb with say 10gb filled?
more than an hr? Mine says update completed, do not unplug until updates applied... - mathprof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had video problems with the firmware update. Beware. I'm going back to the 1.0 firmware, which is a pain since I have to reload all my music.
In my case, most of the videos that I converted with Lathe would stutter after 30 seconds or so and then continue without audio. - wirelessguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One of my iPods is a 3rd Gen. I notice the "iPod Requirements" lists iTunes 6 or later. Does that mean I'll have to upgrade from 5 (and not be able to use Jhymn) ??
OT: Has anyone received anything from their iPod Class Action Settlement? I mailed mine June 7, and haven't heard anything about my $50 Apple credit or replacement iPod. - eduardod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone know how to add the Videos/TV Shows category in the iPod?
- InvaderEvan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YAY they seperated the podcasts from teh frst of you library again :_)
- mementh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just go into the get into and options.. it does nothing.... at least as far as i can see it does not put the shows in the tv shows catagory as we had hoped
- xofc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, great as this is to bitch about, how about giving apple a piece of your mind... in a kind, respectful manner, of course. Now apple knows what I think about their lack of lyrics support for my 4G 40gig ipod.
http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html - jimmiem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They did not fix the podcast playback - if you listen to podcasts via the podcast menu on the ipod, it will play one and then stop, no matter how many of that particular podcast might be available. The only fix is to set up a smart playlist for every podcast, which is a pain in the ass and clutters up my playlists.
- MikeZila, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seeing as how that iPod is like a million years old, probably "screw you".
- bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did they allow you to turn off the "pause when you disconnect the headphones from jack" option? It seems to be way too sensitive to not-so-great headphones(which are all I own).
- celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I waited 3hrs and unplugged it, it rebooted and seems to be working fine.. we shall see what happens
- twogunsalute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just want to know what it changes on the 5G ipod !!!! Eberybody in here is only talking about the 4gs
- ehmjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0all i want is the ability to flash my 4th generation so it can be more like the 5th gen. I mean, even if it couldn't be flashed to play videos (allthough i dont see why not), it should be able to be upgraded to include all the other features on the 5th gen (like pictures in contact list, screen lock, etc.)
i just got my 4th gen a month before they released a video so im REALLY ticked about that upgrade. and i know that it could be flashed if they tried.
errr. - mfloloves, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0downgrade to older firmware WITHOUT restoring
http://www.digg.com/apple/How_to_downgrade_to_older_(iPod)_firmware_WITHOUT_restoring - heifetz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why don't they release any updates to the 2nd gen ipod? Is there some sort of hardware limitation, or is Apple just saying "screw you".
- darkomen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This update software add RADIO support to the ipod mini?, or only fix bugs?
- iiftmlis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is Apple just dropping support for 3G iPods and older? Their last update broke my smart playlists and this update doesn't apply to 3G iPods. Break my iPod and then walk away? Thanks Jobs!
Is there a site that archives old iPod updaters? Of course, then, I'll lose Podcast support. -
