- Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -13/+121When Leopard comes out they should do an ad using a new form iMac, running Leopard and show off the features - same as this iPhone, enough of those Mac V PC ads already.
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/11/2007, -5/+61The current Mac vs PC ads aren't designed to sell a product. They are designed to sell an image. Apple sells it's Mac line of computers as an "experience"—not a product. Many companies do this, BMW in particular. The goal of the Mac vs PC commercials is to appeal to the average person's sense of humor (not the technophile who sits on the computer all day and then sees the ad on YouTube and then rattles on about how this and that is/are "inaccurate.") If they can do that, next time you walk past an Apple store the ad might pop in your mind and you'll think, "What the hell is all the fuss about?" It's designed to get you in the store. Then it's up to their helper monkeys to keep you there and make you buy something.
Most ads selling experiences or services come off as condescending. That's just the way it is. There is no absolute gauge for how good or bad an experience is. Since it's all relative, the best way to promote one over the other is by comparing one against the other.
The iPhone ad is designed to sell a product. The iPhone is better than all other phones because it can do X and Y; other phones can't. Here is an ad showing the iPhone doing X and Y. Look how easy. Buy the iPhone. Ad over. - jackwaters, on 10/11/2007, -17/+66I completly agree with you but I think they should just scrap the Mac V PC right away.
- grogan, on 10/11/2007, -6/+54This would be intimidating to most viewers, because it would show off the differences between Windows and OSX. People would see that they would have to re-learn how to use a computer if they switch.
- gmprunner, on 10/11/2007, -4/+37Watch the man with the perfect hands...
- DeathJux, on 10/11/2007, -10/+38I hate that Apple has resorted to attacking the opposition instead of merely standing on its own merits. OS X is fully capable of selling itself, along with the hardware, just from a features stand-point.
The iPhone ads are a step in the right direction, for sure. - Shorties, on 10/11/2007, -4/+29As much as I love these iPhone commercials and would love to see them do the same with Leopard, I just dont think they can scrap the Mac Vs PC commercials completely. Have you ever seen a group of non geeky girls go to the Dell website and re-watch their ads? or HP, or gateway? (I am aware that their ads probably aren't even hosted on their website but none the less) I have seen that with the Mac ads usually accompanied with words like "Oh they are so cute" or "Hey look their little kids in this one" ect. I personally think the Mac vs PC ads have hit a completely new demographic than any other computer advertisement has before it.
- epyon180, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30I agree, this ad would make my friend actually want an iPhone where as the mac ad's actually piss him off.

Thank you for your incredibly realistic representation of the inside of a church. - roosterjm2k2, on 10/11/2007, -22/+42Its like politics...
you should really show YOUR strengths ... but in reality, Mac, like most politicians would rather attack the opponent than actually show you their own value... - MrZaiko, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18So you and the other known 17 owners of the Zune will rebel against apple? MUST SEE
- schavira, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16The only thing stupider than Mac V. PC ads: Mac V. PC ad parodies.
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15The target market is anyone who bought a RAZR, the best selling cell phone of all time, which originally sold for $799.
Honestly, I'll be surprised if the iPhone doesn't become one of the best selling phones of all time. All it has to do is sell as well as the original RAZR did, and it will be subsidized down to $249 a year from now. AT&T will stop at nothing to try to regain total telecommunication control, and the iPhone is their ticket to swaying large portions of the general Verizon customer base. - eliasg, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15I like how in less than 30 seconds they show the audience how a few features work, and very realistically. They should indeed do this for Leopard.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -6/+16You mean the ad that goes "Yeah, I can play any PC game on my new Mac, and then switch back to iLife when I'm done"?
You missed that part. - ruz322, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Am I the only one that finds the Mac v. PC ads to be hilarious? All you guys seem to be totally down on the commercials. I mean, I'm not a Mac supporter by any means, I use Linux, but the fact that someone is bashing Windows makes me glad!
- hellotyler, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I love these ads. Both are great in my opinion, but never before have I so wanted - no - NEEDED an iPhone. I mean, thats just the most badass phone i'v ever seen. Revolutionary. I don't mind docking it at night.
- tbeseda, on 10/11/2007, -7/+16I agree with you.
But at times, I have to say, I found PC kinda likable... not to an extent that made me want to switch back, but still likable. - spiff21, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10As Gruber wrote:
"It’s a testimony to just how clever the iPhone UI is, and just how bad the UIs are on the competition. I don’t think it’s possible to make a commercial for the Mac that makes any task seem that much cooler than doing the same thing on Windows. This is more like the overwhelming usability advantage from when the Mac was competing against DOS."

I agree with this fully. I'm a longtime Mac user and I think that there are a lot of things that are more intuitive on the Mac, but I don't think that they'd be that easy to demonstrate on a commercial. A lot of what makes using a Mac so great is that day to day things just work the way that you'd expect them to. It _feels_ like a Mac works quite a bit better than Vista does, but I think that's difficult to demonstrate, especially since Vista has narrowed the gap quite a bit.
The iPhone commercial works because most phone interfaces currently suck; the iPhone is a a complete departure from the status quo. Everybody is used to having a difficult time performing what should seem like easy tasks on their phone, and the iPhone demonstrates that simple tasks can in fact be simple to perform. - bmxboy661, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11bring back the "Think Different" ads
- ChillEnt, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11@gmprunner
Do you think it's the same guy as shown in the iPod Nano ads? - grow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I think we need an iPhoneShuffle. I want to call random people.
- crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I kinda like the Mac v PC ads. They're funny, and memorable - more than you could say for most ad campaigns.
- EntangledPhysx, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9@ ilkeryoldas
LOL!
PC: "Are you high?"
Mac: "hmm?"
Ahh good stuff. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9PC is a GREAT guy.
- DelMonte, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12look how hard it is for flag564 on Digg to refrain from bashing Apple in order to inflate his own ego.
From the top down, flag564's culture is to bash Apple as a way to build yourself up. No it doesn't work in the long run other than to keep flag564 in a constant state of seething rage against the Apple world. - speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I bet he's terrified.
- hellotyler, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8By the way, $300 is nothing for something you will use constantly, take everywhere, will entertain you and is all around cool as hell. People drop $300 on gaming consoles all the time, not even taking into consideration the price of the HD tv and the games too. At first, like crimson, I thought it was too expensive. After seeing it in action ? I don't care anyone, especially when you consider how much money i'v spent on say alcohol alone in the last month. (Around $300, perhaps more)
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6The target market is indeed anyone who has bought a RAZR, but not for the reasons you say - I purchased one last year, after they were cheaper. But After using the RAZR user interface for a year, I am DRIVEN to the iPhone by the horrible experiences I have had so far. When we are told the RAZR is supposed to be one of the pinnacles of phones today, and we loathe that - it really makes us more reluctant to keep trying more phones on the market.
I've also seen Treos in operation (Palm models) and Windows Mobile phones, the very latest... but I am nonplussed, the iPhone still appeals. - CrimsonBlur, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8After seeing these ads, seeing the iPhone in action, the UI really is quite obviously a quantum leap ahead of any other mobile device I have ever seen. Not just from a usability standpoint, which it wins hands-down, but also on an integrated features standpoint. Apple's aggressive (proprietary) vertical hardware/software implementation approach really shows its advantages on a device like the iPhone. On the one hand, you have less "options", but on the other, you are certain all of the applications work together seamlessly, instead of individually as is the case with most (all?) mobile applications to date. This software integration seems to go far beyond any smartphone I have seen. The argument can be made that with more options you could get another device to do similar things, but you most definitely have to sacrifice ease-of-use.
That said, considering the price point the iPhone is selling at, I'm not sure the target market -- the people that are actually looking for these features and can afford the device -- are necessarily worried about the ease-of-use issue, because they are already technologically knowledgeable enough for it not to be an issue. The max of 8GB of storage is sufficient for the price as well, considering you will most likely be signing a new wireless agreement when you get the phone whether you are a new customer or not. For that price you should be getting an iPod with at least equivalent storage space to the current standard video iPods, and the additional price of having the phone should be subsidized by signing a wireless agreement.
I don't think Apple + Cingular will have a flop on their hands here with the iPhone, but it definitely will not have the mainstream penetration Apple in particular is hoping for. I may be eating my words here in 6 months, but I doubt it. I say that because I really am the target market for this phone. It has features I have been waiting for, I love the UI, I want to have my music on my phone because I almost always carry my iPod and my cell phone, I have a data plan currently, I'm already a AT&T (Cingular) customer and I would definitely be willing to extend my plan, and I can afford the price... except it's still not worth the price they are asking so I will not buy it. So who is going to buy this thing? - anonym41414, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6"Apple needs to forget having trendy young people dancing around with coloured backgrounds"
Yeah, because those ads are so obviously ineffective.
The market penetration of the iPod is what?
And Apple released new laptops just this morning, so kindly shut your hole. - bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Not only are the current Mac vs. PC ads pretty entertaining, but Mac sales have been up. There's no need to change up the ad campaign.
- ChapelJuice, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I honestly didn't want an iPhone...

"Apple needs to forget having trendy young people dancing around with coloured backgrounds or showing of trendy effects in its Pro Video Apps and concentrate on good, solid adverts. I totally agree that the iPhone Ads are what the Mac ads should be."

but then I will get buried for posting such a comment in an Apple thread - Boondoggle, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6The VAST majority of normal people think the Apple ads are fun.
The people who are outraged have fragile egos and are deeply attached to Windows and identify themselves at some level with the PC guy, and think that the PC guy somehow comes across poorly. When in reality, everyone likes the PC guy. You are supposed to like the PC guy.
They don't get it, becuase they are emotionally attached to an idea that is not borne out by reality. And they would never buy an Apple anyway so thier opinion is marginalized. They are just noisy.
Anyone tech savy who would not buy an Apple solely becuase of the ads = total *****. it is just a ***** ad. Likewise nobody is going to buy an Apple just becuase of the ads. The ads just get people in the door. - Boondoggle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3 by crimsonblur 8 hours ago

Apple is not after mainstream penetration. They are hoping to capture 1% of the market. So stop worrying.

Why? It's a phone. Name me a phone in it's class that has more than 8 gigs of storage. - Boondoggle, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Oh I'm sorry, did those adds strike a nerve? Feeling inadequate today are we?
You can build the biggest PC in the world, and you'll still have a small dick and no girlfriend. - CrimsonBlur, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4$300? Am I missing something? The only prices I have seen for the iPhone are $499(4GB) and $599(8GB) with no savings for signing up for a new plan.
- sardiskan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2My question is...Why is the time on the iphone always set to 9:42am. What is the significance of that number. There is almost always something significant.

- dankCIA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The odd thing is that even though there has been all this comparative advertising from Apple. I haven't seen any rival campaigns or for that matter even any Vista ad's in response. Usually companies like to turn this kind of thing into a pissing contest.
