- chrisgeleven, on 10/11/2007, -1/+51These are some of the best ads Apple has ever made. There is a big buzz about this phone, even from people I know who would never care about such a phone.

- drlha, on 10/11/2007, -1/+38How much more should they pack into a short ad exactly? Its not like they're making a documentary here.
- Roger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+35PDA manufacturers could learn a thing or 10 from the iPhone.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+34i wish some of these ads showed off multi-touch
"the pinch" - rachman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+32looks like it will support flash video..
note that the video section of the nyt is visible in the ad. when wonka showed safari on the iphone in january, that part of the front page was greyed out and had a blue question mark box in the middle of it. - colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -5/+31The thing I don't get is all the people bashing the iPhone before these ads who are now "convinced". If anyone was paying attention from the beginning, this was stuff Apple demonstrated when the iPhone was announced. These are the sort of features that justify the iPhone's price tag. Yes, your RAZR is only $100, but the iPhone's browser streamrolls anything you could get on the RAZR. The iPhone is more a handheld computer than a phone.
Maybe the lesson here is that people should have learned more about the iPhone before going "ZOMG $600 IPHONE SUXXORS" - carsey16, on 10/11/2007, -5/+31I didn't want one until I saw that ad. If it's actually that functional, sign me up.
- geometry, on 10/11/2007, -5/+25What, you don't have to pay for the Internet at home? I pay $40 a month for unlimited data access through my cellphone, that's about the same I pay for my home cable Internet. If I really wanted to I could just use my cellphone as a data modem for my computers at home and save the $40 bucks.
What's next? "What, you want me to pay $30,000 for that car then pay for gas to drive it? rofl" - andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20...what?
- meamog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18I dunno about you, but I test my web stuff in Safari, Firefox, and IE. I thought everyone else did too.
- Rpd9803, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19Safari is a great browser.. I'm not quite sure what the poster is talking about. Safari fairs very well against Firefox, IE, Opera and the like.
- andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18You haven't seen the keynote?... http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/mwsf07/
After you see that, you'll "NEED" one. - jivemasta, on 10/11/2007, -7/+22Microsoft did make a web browser similar to this for windows mobile. It acts in a way similar to google maps, by rendering the page to fit the screen, so it's really small, and then you can zoom in to the parts you want to see. If the iPhone ads are realistic(I don't think they are 100% realistic speed) it blows the microsoft one out of the water. The microsoft one was a live demo though, and this is an ad to get you to buy it, so it's hard to compare and stay non-biased.
- dasilva333, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18apple is right, im tired of having to surf these 'mobile' 'wap' watered down version of all these sites i wish microsoft would just build a mobile browser that competes with the iphone on that.... unless u count that new beta browser deepfish
edit: if u want to see the other ones: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/videos/three-new-apple-iphone-ads-confirming-the-june-29th-release-date-265519.php - nickgwyn, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15They should show youtube functionality (flash), demonstrating that their partnership with google extends beyond the tv and the search bar in safari.
- limpidezza, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15+digg for wonka + sharp eyes
- etx313, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15I pinch. I pinch.
- Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13No, it's called a bad analogy. You know, George Bush.
- Quix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12"I guess it's just me but I'd rather spend $600 on a vacation to Europe or something that actually is worth that much money" - mobilehavoc
You can go on a European vacation for $600???
"don't assume it's some revolutionary product because it really isn't."
Tens of millions of us who have used and owned nothing but crappy cell phones (yes, even the expensive ones) would disagree strongly with that statement. I don't think you know what "revolutionary" means.
Troll Different. - Sandwiches_Time, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Works great for me. What issues are you having specifically?
- Sandwiches_Time, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15"You missed the live NBC video of the device, didn't you? That was all being done in real-time by a reporter next to Gates who was using Surface."
Uh... right. With fake cameras, fake cell phones, fakely interacting with other fake devices. The developers even admitted that most of the features were being "simulated."
What the commercials show is what the iPhone does. If you honestly believe otherwise, you're just living in denial. - Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11I thought you'd be hiding somewhere in this Apple thread Flag, it wouldn't be digg without you.
- geometry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9@meamog
+1
Any decent web developer is going to test their work on multiply browsers and platforms. IE is by far the worst out of the major browsers. Usually everything will work fine in Safari and Firefox but IE always has to complain about something. If you don't believe me about IE look up any example CSS documentation. Any site developed with CSS is going to have to take special consideration for IE. - andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9If the iPod can, it most certainly will. And... touch screen games? I grin with glee.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8> The ad is also now on Apple.com
Check out the drop-down box on the NY Times web site, about halfway through the video. That's not an Aqua drop-down box; could that be close to what the new Leopard theme will look like? - bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8The ad is also now on Apple.com
http://www.apple.com/iphone/ads/ad4/ - andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11I say again, SHOW ME A DEVICE that does all of these things with an interface that is even close to as intuitive as advertised by the iPhone, and I'll apologize.
Sure, you can carry 4 devices that do all of these things, and spend about 1000 dollars doing it... - iSeven, on 10/11/2007, -7/+14@ext313
you pinch, i crush heads.
"i crush your head! i crush your head!" - althe3rduww, on 10/11/2007, -17/+24For those who question if the ad is "realistic" you haven't probably had the opprotunity to see one of these live. I assure you it is realistic. At a press demo it was exactly the same. These ads use no cg or special affects to make the UI look better than it is... that may be what microsoft does *cough* surface *cough* but apple shows the real deal in its ads.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11they need to start advertising the price...
- althe3rduww, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6"They should show youtube functionality (flash), demonstrating that their partnership with google extends beyond the tv and the search bar in safari."
They do, its the google maps ad. http://www.apple.com/iphone/ads/ - mattyohe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Of note: Sunday June 3rd 9:42AM once again
Looking at an archived version of nytimes.com from October 2nd, 2006... the user logged in to the website is "blackholesun" - Sandwiches_Time, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9"Please enlighten me with the "functionality that no other device has"...I can't seem to find any in the iPhone, that's unless you consider the non-removable battery part of that."
Dude you're obviously trolling this thread. That's pretty sad. - EugineMW, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Honestly, I wasn't one of the many people who jumped for joy when the iPhone was announced. I was impressed, but wasn't "I'm going to get this ASAP!"... but now, I really want one. And will get it as soon as I can.
- Powerdrift, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7@fishgills

1. Looking at Amazon.com there's only one Cingular PDA phone I can't get for less than $100 (The 8525 is $199 right now) with a 2 year contract. Even if you add on $40 for a 4GB SD card you're still not talking anywhere near $300-600.
2. Almost all PDA phones have great multimedia capabilities, eliminating the need for a separate iPod. Not only do I have 8GB of storage for my phone, I can add third party codecs, stream video direct from my Cable box/DVR via Slingplayer and 3G, stream audio/video from my PC via Orb, and more.
3. Yes, the iPhone has some unique features which make it impossible to show you another phone that has "all the features". I can, however, show you tons of phones that havefeatures the iPhone does not. Choice of carriers, 3G, removable batteries, actual keyboards, keypads, and soft keys, infrared, Exchange compatibility, full GPS, Skype, Slingplayer, a stylus (more useful than you might think), full voice control, Office apps, multi-protocol IM, removable storage, thousands of available applications, the list goes on and on. Other phones may not have the exact feature set of the iPhone, but they're still competitive. - rmccabe916, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8"apple is right, im tired of having to surf these 'mobile' 'wap' watered down version of all these sites i wish microsoft would just build a mobile browser that competes with the iphone on that.... unless u count that new beta browser deepfish"
I suppose you haven't heard of Opera Mobile and Opera Mini from Opera yet then? ( http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/ )
Opera Mobile has all of the features Safari has on the iPhone and many more as well. Here's a list of them on Windows Mobile (it supports Symbian S60 too):
Grab and Scroll (PocketPC only), Web search in address bar, Save image, Copy text, Send link as e-mail, SMS, and MMS, Import IE bookmarks, Support for Macromedia Flash Player 7 for Pocket PCs, FlashLite 2.1, Multiple Windows, Tabbed browsing (Pocket PC only), Zoom, Download, Navigation and history, Bookmarks, Landscape/Portrait Mode, Pop-up handler, Padlock icon on secure sites, User preferences, Context menu, Change encoding, Desktop mode and Fit to Screen, and a Plugin API (Netscape)
Widget support, an overview mode, and intelligent zoom (like what is already on Opera for the Wii) have been in the works for a long time now, and will be released soon.
I'll let Opera's description tell you about Opera Mini:
Opera Mini™ is a fast and easy alternative to Opera's mobile browser, allowing users to access the Web on mobile phones that would normally be incapable of running a Web browser. This includes the vast majority of today's WAP-enabled phones.
/End my oh so shameful plug ;) - ThatsUnpossible, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7@mobilehavoc
There are these things called Browser Settings and they let you turn ***** off. - DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6"No flash support on the iPhone AFAIK. That's why they're recoding all of YouTube into H264."
I thought the conversion was to improve video quality on the AppleTV. I bet Flash will be supported on the iPhone. - Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11Your arguement doesn't make any sense 'mobilehavoc'.. any sense at all. The 2007 Audi RS4 starts at $68,800, while the 2007 BMW M3 starts out not much cheaper. What the heck has this got to do with a $500 or $600 phone anyway? I know a few that might be interested in, and may be able to afford an iPhone, but definitely can't afford one of those cars.
- ibis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Ethergnat has it. The only thing unique about the iPhone is the interface. For many people that will be enough, and they'll be willing to trade off things that it can't do (no 3G? crazy talk), plus the price, for that interface. For the rest of us we'll stick with our current devices and maybe see how the iPhone pans out. It'll be particularly interested to see what the 3rd party software situation ends up like.
- andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Dude, I've got wifi almost everywhere I go - friends' houses, my house, and my school. And the number of places with wifi is only growing.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I like travelling to Europe as well. But since I work, I have to spend a great deal more time in the US than I ever could abroad. And during that time at home and at work, much of the day is spent carrying a phone.
Why not spend a little bit to make that rather large portion of your life that you are awake and carrying a powered phone more pleasant and useful? Especially with a device that can last for years (well, at least two anyway I'd imagine!).
What I am looking forward to is the return of having a PDA, after Palm wandered off into the Treos I eventually stopped using them when my Palm V wigged out. I was waiting for Palm to build what apparently only Apple is capible of now. - radishes, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7@iseven
dugg for Kids in the Hall reference (if it is, that is. if not, dugg for reminding me of Kids in the Hall). - supermanred, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I have to say anywhere I am most of the time there is a wifi connection available and downtown toronto is one big wifi spot now through our Toronto Hydro Telecom.
Mostly, Im glad it uses wifi and I can use it at home and work. - andburn1, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5I'm bored - sue me. Actually, I guess I do have more invested. I'm only 16 and with the money from my first job this summer, I plan to make one big purchase - the iPhone. This is my first earned money in my entire life - $2400 - and I plan to blow $600 of it on a phone. Maybe I'm just trying to convince myself. Also, I got to the thread early - whenever I get to a story early that's on the front page, I usually comment like hell because I don't feel overwhelmed by the amount of comments already made. What can I say? I love to talk - or, articulate, I guess - and I love to debate. Just entertaining myself. Thanks for your intrest though hahaha.

"Dude, I've got wifi almost everywhere I go - friends' houses, my house, and my school. And the number of places with wifi is only growing."
well, if you are in those places most of the time, you might also have access to a computer to get on to the web; I am talking about the rest of us who are on the road most of the time and cant rely on finding a wi-fi connection all the time -
