- chugger1992, on 10/10/2007, -7/+138Not nearly as different as I thought it was. Dugg for the truth.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/10/2007, -18/+125Nothing much in the way of design changes. It looks like they just slapped a new coat of paint on it.
- cmilki, on 10/10/2007, -23/+96Anyone else like the old iMacs better? :(
- Jambi, on 10/10/2007, -11/+74So basically, it's an identical design, with an aluminum shell, that ugly black border, and a super-reflective glossy screen. They would've done better getting rid of the black and covering the whole thing in aluminum, and keeping the matte screen.
- Ao4Jo, on 10/10/2007, -13/+76old= white
new= black
OMFG Steve Jobs you really reinvented yourself this time... - Kahlnen, on 10/10/2007, -6/+36Once you go black, you never go back......
- BelgainRoffles, on 10/10/2007, -5/+35Now you can get it that centimeter further back on your desk to where you always wanted it to be!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -17/+44*****. more like 10%
- lunarworks, on 10/10/2007, -5/+30People aren't understanding the black border. The black border around the screen is supposed to make it stand out better. If you compare the screen's contrast between the white border and the black border, you can see exactly that. (Plus, it has the added benefit of "hiding" the webcam, which was an odd-looking black spot on the old iMac.)
My new Nokia phone has pretty much the same design: Aluminum shell, with a black border around the screen. - CPOliver, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25I definitely prefer the aesthetics of the previous iMac model, the clean white and lack of nasty black border looked much nicer imho. I'm not digging the black apple logo either, it seems like a poor combination with the the aluminium.
Having said that, a) it might be a grower and b) it might look a lot nicer 'in the flesh' - BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -9/+31No, THIS is an old Mac.

Your picture is an old iMac. Buried for inaccuracy. - sqzz, on 10/10/2007, -8/+29You mean to say that the aluminum vs plastic means nothing to you.
- korupture, on 10/10/2007, -23/+43No, THIS is an old Mac. Buried as innacurate.

First of all, people seem to be getting hung up on "doing more things" on a PC... I can run Windows, Linux, and OSX on my mac. So I can run all the same programs as a PC user, plus more (because of Apple's proprietary software not available on PCs). Let's say I stick with just OSX.. let's think about what we really do with our computers.. download and play movies? I can do that.. Download and play songs? I can do that. Write Office documents? I can do that. I even do professional design with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash, 3D design in Maya... Anything I've missed? I can switch into XP or Vista and do that, too. I use a PC all the time, at work, but I still prefer the Mac because I can do everything in an OS that I prefer, on a machine that looks far better than anything I've seen from the other side. As for Macs being for "Newbies", Leo Laporte of TechTV uses all 3 major operating systems but prefers the Mac; Kevin Rose of Digg says he prefers the Mac; Alex Lindsay of PixelCorps (who's done work for some major motion pictures) uses a Mac... I don't know if you can say it's just for the ignorant, anymore. I think I have a beautiful computer, whose operating system I prefer, that allows me to do everything you do. I can upgrade my hard drive and my RAM, and since I replace my main computer every few years anyways, that's plenty good for me. Sure your PC is more upgradeable, but it sounds to me like you're driving a Civic and *****-talking my Aston Martin.
- Tyr7BE, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20Well yes. It's aesthetic. Much like a new coat of paint.
- berb, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21The black design looks terrible. The simple white design is what has always represented Apple computers, at least to me.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18you mean LESS expensive...
- rcran, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15I have to say, I am an apple fanboy, and I really miss white. It is nearly gone from their product line.
- polencia, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I actually like the newer one. I think the black border provides some contrast and does make the screen look a little better.
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14in the way that a Smart car is more masculine than a Miata
- Yarnage, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16Looks like Apple stole the idea Microsoft had with Vista. I know, I know, I will be dugg down INSTANTLY for saying that but I think there is some truth to it.
Microsoft did quite a bit of user testing before decided that when a window is 100% maximized, that the bottom and top toolbars will be almost completely black. This helps a user keep their eye on the center of the page, rather than the top and bottom or anywhere else. Looks like Apple's new design does just that (and does it really well).
Overall I'd definitely say it's an improvement. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+17the new one is actually thinner than i thought. looks a little more pro and a little less really-big-white-ipod-computer. love it.
- chalkboy, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15I hate glossy screens they are a pain to see
- sdubois92, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11apple can make an entire computer and monitor the same size as a dell monitor
- acu8509, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9dugg for implied racial stereotype.
- jtb4, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12lolz
I actually like the white one better, but maybe it's because I'm just used to it..... Or maybe it's because I'm from Georgia. - MedHead, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Oh, I see. So my personal opinion means nothing, simply because I'm not you. I get it.
- AnotherThought, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8dudes... apple finally figured out it's not always about the "white" when you are looking into a big screen nothing helps you focus better as much as a glossy BLACK border, those who had black bordered monitors will understand. apply fan boys will adept though they dun look as good with the 2 tones... (i'd went all black..) but it's a move for better user experiences
- wildmannz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You just haven't checked your facts, have you?
- DiggDuggDone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The 'old' iMac was modeled after the successful iPod.
The 'new' iMac seems to be modeled after the untested iPhone. - michaelinnotts, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9It's a shame; the black border and aluminium frankly clash, and the front looks too busy/colourful. Give me a white iMac any day. At least now I'll be able to get an old white 24 inch iMac for cheap.
- johnpowell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I have to put my post-it notes somewhere.
- GREEDOnvrFIRED, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12You folks need to talk to designers about the "ugly ass black border." We get paid to make things look nice and we know that nearly everything looks better with a black border. That is why "Full Screen Mode" in Photoshop uses a black border. The machine is stunning. Period. No this isn't the machine of choice of any serious designer but how nice of Apple to treat their consumer customers with the attention to detail usually reserved for professionals.
- conceptkid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8what do you people want? Virtual reality? FFS, it looks awesome. I'd say its pretty hard to improve something that is already really well designed.
- superdupergc, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14seems more masculine
- rusackas, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I reeeeeally miss the "desklamp" style one with the display on the swivel arm. That was, in my opinion, the most practical innovation in all-in-one computer design in a long time, and for some reason they dumped it :/
- brutalentropy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8bzzt wrong. All CRT imacs can run OS X up to 10.3. iMac DV (with built in firewire) can even run 10.4, the currently available OS X. Thanks for playing.
- edwartica, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Meaning its going to be that much harder if I need to dig into it for some reason.
- manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Not at all. The G3 iMacs still run many school-related apps fairly well. (Although it would be nice to have the brand-new iMacs :P )
- ZephyrNinety, on 10/10/2007, -5/+11The old one looks way nicer if you ask me.
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The dropped the 17" and replaced it with a 20" kept the same price, kept the same price on all other models upgraded the graphics and processors.
Drop the price on the 24" $200, and added a new high end version with a core 2 extreme (which is new, and priced higher)
so no, for the most part everything is cheaper! - dotbacher, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6My 3 kids (ages 6, 8, and 11) each have there own old imac. The are all G3, 400 Mhz. Got them on ebay for about $50 each. They each play games online, write emails to grandparents and friends, and iChat with me while I'm at work. They are running OSX, never crash, and are plenty fast for what they need to do. Try doing that on any PC the same age.
- selkie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5"but it sounds to me like you're driving a Civic and *****-talking my Aston Martin"
You, Sir, are my hero for the day... - diggtomanjeri, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Can't say I care for the "design" of the new ones. That black border looks distracting. An all black version would look classier, these look like they were designed by Dell.
- roflcast, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6hey guys, is it just me or does the new imac look like my old acer tv?
http://www.equip-u.com/shop/images/products_computers/acer_tv_AT2010W.jpg - arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Your objective evaluation is appreciated, sir.
- realdcurtis, on 06/03/2009, -1/+6Why does everyone instantly discount glossy screens as crap? Have you ever owned and used one for months, every day? I have a glossy MacBook Pro, and it has only bothered me once or twice when I was in extremely awkward lighting conditions. Even having the sun behind you pointing directly into the screen doesn't cause a "bad" reflection, and the enhanced definition you get is definitely worth it.
- Emery, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I suppose that is why the cinema displays have that same edge... oh wait, they dont. My bad.
- liuping, on 10/10/2007, -7/+12Glass and aluminum vs white plastics. That's one hell of a coat of paint....
- univerio, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8THIS is an old Mac. http://www.fotosearch.com/comp/FSP/FSP230/132013.jpg
