- quickjack, on 02/09/2008, -8/+277Wouldn't it be nice to have similar Safari speed Δ on the iPhone/iTouch! (+ flash)
- Respec7, on 02/09/2008, -5/+128Added Bonus is the golden compass, complete pimpness.
- johnny222, on 02/09/2008, -8/+131Dugg for delta.
- CaptainLando, on 02/09/2008, -6/+99If you are on a Mac, by all means, switch! Firefox is still the best for Windows, though.
- knelto, on 02/09/2008, -5/+71Fail. Once this thing hits 88 mph, you're gonna see some serious *****!
- joeycerone, on 02/09/2008, -5/+57direct download: http://nightly.webkit.org/files/trunk/mac/WebKit-S ...
- DarkDx, on 02/09/2008, -1/+47Yep, you can run it on 10.4.11.
- superspud, on 02/09/2008, -1/+44CAPITAL delta, no less...
- noliberalbull, on 02/09/2008, -1/+39text rendering is done differently by apple, made to look as it would in print... in some ways more accurate, but most windows users think it looks blurry... and it does in some way, but you get used to it
- bcamp1973, on 02/09/2008, -0/+38firefox is sloooooow on the Mac. i use it extensively with the Firebug plugin for development, but for daily surfing of the web safari is by far the best performer on the Mac
- kelly, on 02/09/2008, -5/+42I was an avid Fiefox user and tried webkit out and I must say, I've never looked back.
- bitterman316, on 02/09/2008, -10/+44Twice as fast ? Oh my God ! That´s like, the double !
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -7/+41Is it worth it to switch from Firefox yet? Just like when I was trying to make the leap from IE to Firefox, I'm hesitant and too used to Firefox (of course, afterwards I'd never go back)... but now I'm trying to decide if I should go from Firefox to Safari.
- santaliqueur, on 02/09/2008, -5/+35Epic fail. You incorrectly quoted Doc Brown, please surrender your geek card now.
"If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 mph, you're gonna see some serious *****." - i4mt3hwin, on 02/09/2008, -0/+30I'll never try myspace.
- bdash, on 02/09/2008, -2/+32Be aware that the URL you mentioned is for a specific build of WebKit. As soon as a new nightly build is made available, some time in the next hour or so, that link will no longer be current. http://nightly.webkit.org/ has the latest builds easily accessible.
- Ciryon, on 02/09/2008, -4/+33Holy crap it's fast! Im using Opera as my default browser on Leopard but it seems like I finally can start using Safari now
- Alegoo92, on 02/09/2008, -18/+46I guess it's different needs for different people, because personally all those toolbars and addons are so useless to me.
- tjp188, on 02/09/2008, -4/+32If they can do this with Safari on the Mac, can they PLEASE do the same thing with iTunes on windows. That software is so slow and bloated its ridiculous
- WolfHook, on 02/09/2008, -3/+31I realised that the only reason I stuck with FireFox was for AdBlock Plus but then I found SafariBlock and Saft which makes my Safari browser complete. Also I found a very useful plug-in called Inquisitor. FireFox on a Mac looks bum ugly and since OS X is so polished using such a browser just made me feel dirty.
- jonathantneal, on 02/09/2008, -4/+32windows: http://nightly.webkit.org/files/trunk/win/WebKit-S ...
- fugazied, on 02/09/2008, -0/+27I like the fact that Firefox has helped people realise that there are a lotr of great browsers out there. Looking forward to 5-6 browsers sharing the market share rather than 2 (FF and IE) and the rest getting the crumbs.
- MadOtaku, on 02/09/2008, -2/+29Apple fontrenders differently. They try to make it look more like printed text; this is because Apple was (and is) very used in the publishing industry.
- TheWorm, on 02/10/2008, -1/+27Where did this iTouch thing come from? Apple has never referred to it as an iTouch. Who started calling it that?
- naonao, on 02/09/2008, -2/+26I already stopped using Firefox on the Mac because I discovered Safari was just stupidly quick compared to it. It's hard to imagine anything being much quicker but I will give this a test just now.
- Nanobe, on 02/09/2008, -0/+23That's because Safari on Windows uses Mac OS X style font smoothing, which is different from Windows' ClearType font smoothing. Most noticeably, Mac OS X font smoothing doesn't using hinting (adjusting the characters to respect the pixel grid). What this means is that there's a lot of grey/blurriness around the characters, which looks very out-of-place on Windows.
On Linux, you typically have a combination of both font smoothing methods, plus hinting, which ends up looking very very nice. - Proctor, on 02/09/2008, -5/+28it already does. The iphones browser makes up for time lost with edge against 3G. Its probably the fastest browser on a phone.
- tehdan, on 02/09/2008, -1/+23To my knowledge, they've never been "years out of sync". Months perhaps.
Safari 3.1 is due very soon, which should bring it very close to the current nightlies. - whitesaint, on 02/09/2008, -0/+21http://nightly.webkit.org/
- CaptainLando, on 02/09/2008, -1/+21On my 12" pbook g4 I definitely favor Safari over Firefox.
Safari (in my experience on this machine) is much faster and better on memory.
So I am excited about this, if it runs this well all-around on Leopard. - andycr512, on 02/09/2008, -1/+19"ads don't bug me and shouldn't bug you."
Who says they shouldn't bug me? An ad flashing all the colors of the rainbow in sequence with a person screaming that I have won a free iPod is distracting no matter who you are, and in my case I can't even read the article if an ad is moving at the same time. That is definitely grounds for blocking ads in my book. - inactive, on 02/09/2008, -5/+23Dugg for +flash.
- skidooer, on 02/09/2008, -1/+17Webkit =~ Safari
Webkit is the rendering engine for Safari, like Gecko is for Firefox. - turpenine, on 02/09/2008, -1/+16they make ad plugins for safari now though too.
- JoeDiggsIt, on 02/09/2008, -1/+16On my mac (and for the record, on my Windows machines I run Firefox) Firefox is incredibly slow compared to Safari.
- santaliqueur, on 02/09/2008, -4/+19Agreed. Dugg down.
- DarkDx, on 02/09/2008, -2/+16Been using webkit latest nightlies for some weeks and the difference is very noticeable :)
And it doesn't feel unstable or anything like that, so I use it everyday. - echolyean, on 02/10/2008, -1/+15I've done that. Perhaps instead of waiting for an update that includes the ability to delete our own comments before they're posted we should get into the habit of having a backup comment ready to go, just in case we have second thoughts about a post.
The green thumbs up is over there ---------------------> - inactive, on 02/09/2008, -2/+16I've been testing it, and I barely see the pages load anymore. If you have a slow connection though, a new page won't open right away, but when it does, you'll get the full page without waiting for images to load.
- sonicularulus, on 02/09/2008, -5/+19yeah. we're not idiots here.
- hendo1769, on 02/10/2008, -1/+14My mom spontaneously started refering to mine as an iTouch. It makes sense: iPod, iMac, iBook ect. Embarrassing thing is that since she's started doing it, I've picked it up from her.
- rivalius13, on 02/10/2008, -2/+15Dugg for pointing out that was a delta and not a really odd typo.
- mygans, on 02/09/2008, -7/+19is there a download for windows?
- M4cb0y, on 02/10/2008, -0/+12History > Restore All Windows from Last Session
- freakk123, on 02/09/2008, -7/+19Well played.
- tuartboy, on 02/09/2008, -0/+12I just ran sunspider tests (the same one used in the article) on FF 3.0b4 and on the webkit nightly. Overall, webkit is 3.04x the speed of the latest firefox beta.
- bigbchew, on 02/09/2008, -3/+15I think that's the point. It's Apple's way of saying '***** You!' to Windows users...
- timro, on 02/10/2008, -0/+11@Boondoggle
Yup, Logitech's keyboard software is called iTouch. - thepxc, on 02/09/2008, -0/+11Yes, the KDE devs are doing that for KDE4 (moving Konqueror onto Webkit).
- KAMiKAZOW, on 02/09/2008, -0/+10Current plan is to have that done by KDE 4.1.
