- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -9/+49I love the way each new addition to the OS is resulting in things being even more simplified. Usually when new parts and features are added to software, that software ends up becoming more complicated. Take Office 2009 (joke) for example, that has just gotten more complicated than its predecessor. This is a fine example of the bipolar differences between the way Microsoft thinks and the way Apple thinks. I hate to say it but Microsoft thinks one way, and Apple thinks different.
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34"Dictionary searches can be performed in Spotlight"
LOVE. I love Spotlight, and I love the Dictionary widget. Now that they are combined, I am going to be an unstabable productive MACHINE!
:B - auxplage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21I just want brushed metal to die for good which does not seem to be happening.
We can all hope for a new Finder. - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Looking at these screens makes me more and more excited that im getting a MacBook Pro
- mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Spotlight and Quicksilver are two different things. Quicksilver basicly a launcer on anabolic steriods. Spotlight is for searching documents and other things like that on your system.
- jaydj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20unstabable?? Freudian much?
- nextsteposx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Cant wait for MacWorld
- SuperSnake2012, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I can't wait for Leopard... looking forward to it! Looks like it's gonna be a nice upgrade from Tiger.
- arapro, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15very cool
- BWhaler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wow. Leopard is looking like a fantastic update. Apple is adding new features and fixing a lot of the cludginess of OS X.
And of course, we still don't know the top secret features. Exciting stuff.
Can't wait to get my new 17" MBP on Friday. - rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"where are all the mac haters tonight?"
Fixing their registries, probably. - zigziggityzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6wtf does that mean? sounds like dirty porn from hicksville, TN...
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If Vista was what it was supposed to be, I'd be looking forward to it. But then they cut out each awesome new feature, and we're left with a slightly beautified XP. Slightly.
- dotpage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7File Recovery is a great way to revive two of my favorite OS functions: UNDELETE and UNFORMAT
As the family and friends "geek for hire" I saved countless butts, and very recently had to help a friend that wiped a partition with over 17000 photos, I used FileSalvage (90 bucks) which does a poor job renaming all the files with ordered numbers, I could have used Leopard's way easier.. - PhillyMJS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Apple says "spring," but I'm hearing here and there that they're trying to have it done for MacWorld in January to steal the thunder from the launch of the 'home' versions of Vista.
Either way, they'll most likely announce the ship date at MacWorld, whether Leopard is ready then or will go out the door in March.
~Philly - badtz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Loving all of the new features in Leopard. I just installed Vista via Parallels on my MacBook Pro tonight. The installation process was MUCH better than XP, actually quite close to OS X. The GUI though is crazy! As usual, Microsoft went way over board with the GUi and the gradients! Feels like OS X 10.0!!! And all the text that you have to read all over Vista is atrocious! How can someone [like my mother] use something like this? Vista = overly complicated
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah the network hang in Finder is atrocious. They gotta fix it. It's the #1 most frustrating thing about my MacBook.
- SuitCase874, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I thought 2001 was Fisher Price Blue?
Apple does well with muted colours and whites. They do indeed have to tread a thin line, but I'd much prefer pretty white Aqua pinstripes to Vista's glassy faded purples and blacks and whatever-you-wants. If you want something more hideous there's always stuff like ShapeShifter to use.
I just hope they make some sort of effort to revise the HIG and to enforce the new widget styles as standard, because right now OS X is almost as much of a hodge-podge as XP and Vista. - CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I never could understand the absolute LOATHING over brushed metal. However, I'm with you on the new Finder. I'd like to see it fully Cocoa enabled. It doesn't multitask as well as I'd like it to. I especially want to see the day when the Finder can function even if there is a network problem...
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4When non-Mac users see that Mac users want a new finder they probably don't realise that the existing Mac finder is still way better than the Windows set-up, it's just that Mac users have been spoiled by the other parts of the Mac OS and Apple software, so they know what's possible and are way harder to please.
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i love quicksilver AND spotlight. spotlight is the best (imho) for finding files, addressbook entries, emails, ichats & buddies, and ical items and other info i need. i use quicksilver for everything else (it's indespensable!!!)
i guess it's more like: when i'm looking for a piece of info or a file/folder, i go to spotlight. i use quicksilver when i want to do more than simply locate/open/launch whatever i'm looking for. - jermm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4130 bucks
(I'd start saving now) - DonLapre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What should they change? Should they change just for the sake of changing things? thats generally a bad idea.
- ajwitte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4...'cause it's so dependable, so sensible, so beautiful...
- matt77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No, you can't like Windows if you like Mac, you have to choose one!
Sorry, dumb joke... I'm looking forward to leopord too, and vista (though I admit I have a mac bias ;). - Nachoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Whenever I see things like this there is a deep desire burning inside myself to get rid of Windows XP and just buy a MacBook Pro and be happy for the rest of my life or till the notebook is broken.
- macnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I hate how I can't do one thing while the Finder is looking for the drive I forgot to unmount before putting the MacBook to sleep.
- bennettrainey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3what keeps me away from windows is the aplications that created by a programer who seamed to have A.D.D.,
the lack of focus to detail - minusxthexbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2could someone tell me the release date of it?
- SATURN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Say goodbye to Little Snitch!
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Spotlight needs a lot of RAM, the first time you run it on a RAM limited machine, it may act slow. But with enough RAM (read 1GB), Spotlight is lighting fast on my 1.25 Ghz G4 Mac mini, especially compared to Windows XP search...
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Finally - I had not heard Safari was supporting SVG.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Too bad there's no picture of Safari doing SVG. The pre-versions (WebKit) are pretty good i'm told
- AlphaMack, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Yup, the new firewall functionality is basically the same as Little Snitch. LS will still have its use for < 10.5 users.
- mikae1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really hope that firewall can block outgoing traffic from applications too. On Windows there are bunch of free firewalls offering this functionality while on mac you have to buy Little Snitch or some other shareware firewall. Correct me if I'm wrong.
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These buttons:
http://loop.worldofapple.com/wp-content/post-images/resindbuttons.jpg
I'm not talking about the traffic light buttons. The normal Aqua buttons are even seen in the other screenshots. But that's not the point. I think Apple tries to conceal the new interface widgets as much as they can, and that they will add them at the last moment.
The screenshot is showcasing the new Resolution-Independant feature, but it seems it also let some new widgets appear in that "Window" demo, that maybe Apple didn't want us to see yet. I've never seen these buttons in Interface Builder, the fact that they are blown up doesn't explain their look and color. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kill it by using Shapeshifter
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, is it me or these screenshots revealed the new buttons that will be used instead of old style Aqua buttons? Seems very iTunes 7-ish to me, which is not surprising. Some people will hate it, but whatever Apple do in that area, some people will not like it.
- jonasf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://webkit.org/projects/svg/index.html
- Chasin_Fat_Kids, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4For me anyway there was a learning curve to quicksilver that I was not willing to overcome - but I'm consistently looking up defs via spotlight, so I'm stoked at this add.
Also, and correct me if I'm wrong, don't you have to "reload"/"re-index" quicksilver if you add, say, a new file? Meaning quicksilver would not recognize any new files unless you manually reset it? I remember something like this being a pain. Where as spotlight automatically indexes new content on the fly. - mikae1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check out the Little Snitch site. It says that the Leopard firewall will NOT be able to block outgoing connection attempts, only incoming. I guess we'll have to keep paying for what Windows users get for free.
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Nachoo
Just do it. Be aware though, that the psychotropic 'happy drugs' they coat the packaging with wear off after a couple of months, so you develop a craving for another hit of the Apple goodness.
@Ireland
I despise Microsoft as much as, if not more than, the next guy, but to be fair, we should give them credit in the next version of Office for trying to innovate with the 'ribbon' thing.
I think the jury is still out on whether the Ribbon is a good thing (from a usability point of view), but some of the Java guys (the ones who are heavily into UI) are very excited about it. So don't be surprised if it starts showing up in odd places, or even in OSX. - dchoi22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is Leopard going to be a free upgrade for Mac OS X users or will we have to pay for it?
(I just bought my first Mac in my life (Mac Book Pro 15.4") and I don't know what's free and what's not in Macs) - buglord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I share the loathing of metal - especially since just about every iApp has a slightly differnet look.
The program UNO [http://gui.interacto.net/] is a must-have on every mac I use. - angelof, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, Vista looks quite good and it'll without a doubt be better than XP. But, for my money, when I buy a new desktop next year, it'll be a Mac with Leopard. I'll still use windows at work, but I'll finally have an all mac setup at home. You are allowed to like more than one OS, all of them have their little quirks.
- angelof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the fact that there's nothing distracting. I use my computer for work, not because of how pretty it is. Anyway, OS X has a nice look to it, simple, but nice.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well I'm sure you can find a river near where you live, or six feet of rope ;)
/I should make fun of such things I know, but to be honest what attracted me to responding to you was the fact that I can't wait either. - PhillyMJS, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Spotlight has its uses, but I love LaunchBar when it comes to launching apps quickly. Spotlight isn't fast enough IMHO. The dictionary and calculator features they're adding to it are pretty nifty, though.
