- longzheng, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39This is more like Apple vs. OEMs (Dell, Toshiba, Sony) than Apple vs. Microsoft.
- kaje, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40These new ones are much funnier than their older ones. Nice. =)
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -16/+46@estvir
Watch the Touche' commercial again. That's for people like you.
And since when has it been cool to brag about the fact that the only thing holding people down to something you support is their monopoly? If, and I am not saying they ever will, but if MS opens up Direct X, they are toast. Or if game developers grow some balls and use Open GL, they are toast. - cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -9/+39What? You don't want to be trendy and hip and unique? You'd rather be (as they're implying) a mindless corporate drone with no soul?
- gimmegimmenow, on 10/12/2007, -16/+44You want games? Get a game console!
And there are some new ones to choose from; Wii, X Box 360, PS3. - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26If MS released a new ad for Windows, I might digg it. STFU.
- ddrirc, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26Well, the 'out of the box' one was pretty good. :3
- msbeckman, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25Actually they do, I have had 2 friends who thought they were funny, and they talked to me about em'. They both now own Macs...
- Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20The Bootcamp one was much better, but the Apple "We're better... just because" aire of superiority is still there. Because everyone knows if you put a picture of a family vacation on a PC, it explodes. It's not possible to edit video, either.
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18True. Seeing as the Touche one is selling Windows to Intel Mac users.
- Spanca, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20"If microsoft ever bundled all that software with XP, they would get sued for anti-trust *****. Nice how the rules only apply to certain companies."
Apple don't bundle their software with the OS, it's bundled with the computers. Go out and buy a new copy of OS X and tell me what software is bundled with it. - twitndiggfan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20i think they're good, i love my mac, and there is no way that windows xp/vista can beat any mac os ever again
- kaje, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17And you know this how? They haven't released a quarterly earnings report with enough time to show that since they've started airing the commercials.
- kaje, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18XP is obviously not "out of the box" because they put it right in the commercial that the purchase of Windows XP is separate.
- ihatekevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22They really shouldn't advertise that Windows can run on a Mac due to the fact that Boot Camp is not running perfectly, is not "out of the box", and is not the easiest thing to install for a non-geek, which is who they are targeting...
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16"If microsoft ever bundled all that software with XP, they would get sued for anti-trust *****."
Its not bundling it that is the problem, it is bundling it and making it impossible to remove. If you want to uninstall something on your Mac or GNU/Linux box, it is as easy as hell. You still can't remove IE from Windows. If Apple bundles iLife _and_ makes it impossible to remove, that is a problem. But I do not see the problem with including extra software, so long as the user has control over that software. - pfranz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17r2d7 > I think what they were saying is Macs and PCs used to be unique and good for their respective things. Now Macs are able to do everything a PC can and everything a Mac has always done. Take it how you will and use what you want. I'll just use my OS of choice.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Wouldn't be a day on Digg without stupid OS flame wars.
I don't know when people will understand. There are different OSes, one isn't BETTER than the other, it depends on what you're doing. 1 year ago, if you wanted to game, you'd build a PC. Sure, now you can get away with a Mac for a while, but have fun upgrading.
Each OS suits different people. I have a PC, but I don't like XP as much as OS X. I also own a Mac, and it doesn't slow down after 2 months of it being used.
But of course, nobody will EVER learn. - DarkDays, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17"PC" isn't technically an attack on Windows/Microsoft. Though people will probably interpret it that way.
- vashmyvindows, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16On the other hand, I love the abrasive nature of these ads. In light of the commercials, people have asked me questions and sought to learn more about the Mac platform.
They used to make fun of my *nix affliction, now they seek knowledge, neat! - jwoelich, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Looks like someone else is too stupid to understand the marketshare statistics.
To put this into perspective, Acer, which is currently the 5th largest computer manufacturer worldwide, is HOPING to have a 10% marketshare by 2010. Dell has about a 17% global marketshare, and they are #1, with HP coming in a close second. Apple is a hardware manufacturer, so to be accurate, they must be compared to EACH INDIVIDUAL HARDWARE MANUFACTURER, not against the entire Wintel market, if you want to be taken seriously when throwing around statistics. Would you consider Acer nearly bankrupt? Going out of business? Pathetic?
Get a f*cking clue. The little marketshare argument is old and tired, especially when coming from someone who doesn't know what the hell they are talking about, and who's first concern is how super-neato-cool their Wintendo is. - hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15@r2d7
I liked the Touche' ad because the PC guy just does not seem to get it. And because of a Steve Jobs interview I have watched. Its available here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upzKj-1HaKw&search=steve%20jobs
The thing that caught my attention was his reference to how MS brings no culture, or personality to computers, which for me is a big part of my life. Its from 1996 and it is true even today.
I am no Mac fan. I find them too expensive for me. But I think Macs do have that X factor. - modusop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I like the ads - I like things that get people talking, and that's how I convinced 4 of my friends to switch. Now we're all on Macs - we call it the "green phone club" (iChat users know what I mean).
- omniatlas, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13lol! my buddy went to highschool with that guy btw. good times in fairfield, CT.
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Does not matter, Apple is simply leading up to leopard which will probably be released in January at macworld, where running windows on a mac will be out of the box and official.
- Erasmus1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Its subjective. Apple is saying that their computer and software package is better for personal use than what you get on a PC that was designed for the business atmosphere. The home user is what they are after with these ads. With the touche ad they are saying if you want to use a Mac at home and have a PC at work, that you no longer need a PC to work from home.
- Evilstanley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9haha what?
yes, apple ads in .wmv format would make total sense... - Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9As much as I hate Apple, their commercials are hilarious. Dugg.
- theRIAA, on 10/12/2007, -20/+28mac gamer... lol
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7778857744431149858&q=mac+gamer
RvB rules... it used to rule - nothingthewolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9the arguments will never end. i personally am a mac fan. i'm on a 12" powebook right now but i would absolutely love to get a macbook and run both OS'.
how about we all agree to be fans of the computer itself. who cares about details. - ACalcutt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Bye
- einsteinbqat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Actually, Apple's ads are quite funny. Dugg.
- super_spyder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9i think iv seen at most 3 trail programs on a mac (iwork, office, quickin) as opposed to the dell i just bought at work that had atleast 20
- drummerdude208, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7well these ads are decent but Dave Chappelle shows the real reason all of you get macs in his mac ad.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekKFK_kOidg - KZeni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8They are also on TV and are replacing the old ones. But they're on their website just for people who want to check them all out.
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6ahhh the greatness of that skit.
- noliberalbull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Is it just me or did you just negate your first argument with your second?
"Sure, now you can get away with a Mac for a while, but have fun upgrading. Each OS suits different people. I have a PC, but I don't like XP as much as OS X. I also own a Mac, and it doesn't slow down after 2 months of it being used."
If it doesn't slow down, it rules out the need to upgrade it which you spoke of being difficult...
*btw, I actually pretty much agree with you* - pfranz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10They never did imply boot camp. You can dual boot or run them concurrently by emulator.
- DocXango, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11I don't think strcmp actually criticized iPhoto, just said they never used it.
- kaje, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah..They don't need to bash competitors. They just throw chairs at them!
- iluvdrbonner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It is the same as saying that DSLites are out in stores and also you can read about them online. Some people are excited and since this is a democratic site you have no reason to complain. Just Don't digg it. But for those of us who think its cool, Shut up.
- ACalcutt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't watch tv... I found the ads interesting
- apetrie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Its kind of silly that gimmegimmenow is getting modded up for that comment! Playing games on a computer is radically different from playing on a console, and the simplistic nature of controllers means consoles are not going to be replacing certain kinds of PC games any time soon. I like consoles and I like my PC for games, and I would be much more likely to buy a Mac if gaming was no longer an issue. When I buy a laptop it will most likely be a Mac, but that's when/if I can afford to have more than one computer. I would just miss gaming too much if I were to switch to a Mac as my only computer.
Love apple products, go ahead.. they deserve it. Don't just mod people up and down blindly though when they have a good point (or not in this case) though. - kaje, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A lot of Windows users are already going to have Quicktime due to having iTunes.
- geojessb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Ah I love Mac. And now that the Apple Macboook "Black" finally dropped in price. I can finally convence my wife that we MUST HAVE A MAC BOOK PRO 17" and then I can tell her how I need to UPGRADE MY G5 with a 30" HD DISPLAY WOO HOO!!!.. ah day dreaming. what fun...
- phil.busch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I thought that too. I recently bought a mac however, and it was installed, and it seems to be the full version. Maybe I'm missing something, but it appears to me that it comes fully installed with OS X, and you only need to pay to upgrade. Just my guess. Can someone clairify?
- Amishplumber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yup comes free with the computer, you'll only have to pay if you want to upgrade to the next version whenever it comes out (i.e. ilife '05 > ilife '06)
- apetrie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Uhm, wow. You are complaining about people behaving exactly the way you are behaving.
I don't get the whole digg vs. slashdot thing, I know the majority of us web geeks have enough time in our day for both of them really, why must it be one or the other? =) - actionscripted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4When's the last time you saw a good Windows ad on TV?
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I love these ads. And I hate Apple. AND I love Microsoft.
Try to figure THAT one out.
Oh, and I like Linux. I am just a crazy person. -
