You just described digg. - unloud, on 10/12/2007, -5/+48Dude, you just called yourself an *****.
...I guess you finally got something right. - h2d2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Yes, because until these new monitors, Apple was one of the biggest GSA contractors...
- hotdamn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15@Ireland: You obviously haven't seen one of these displays if you think they're old design by Apple's standards. They're pristine.
- chiptinder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9This is ridiculous, they've posted this rumor before EVERY apple trade show for the past year. I guess eventually they'll be right.
- awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I don't really think anyone sees this as a big surprise. It's kind of like the bluetooth mighty mouse... we all knew it was coming.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's not like you can connect a webcam with a VGA/DVI cable, so you could always just unplug the USB/firewire cable...
- jake57, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10If they make this their only option, to have iSights built in, then a lot of government facilities will not be getting these for security reasons. Hopefully a BTO option.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12New Displays at Macworld? This will tie in with Apple's ditching of the iSight cameras, and the fact that their displays are an old design by Apple's standards. They could make sense of all these things with new displays at Macworld. Plus Apple likes the all in one, so I'm calling true in this one, and true on them getting rid of the iSight's for good also.
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9About time!.. But I'm still not going to get one. The Dell displays look just as great and are half the price(in most cases).
- mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Given the fact they discontinued the external iSight, this seems like a rumor that could actually come true for once.
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4One of these displays probably.
- willdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@minideezel
obviously you don't have a current Apple display and have not hooked one up. They have USB and FireWire on the back of the display. While there is only one cord coming out of the back, it splits into three seperate cables: DVI, USB, FireWire. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"@Ireland: You obviously haven't seen one of these displays if you think they're old design by Apple's standards. They're pristine"
Actually I have, and I love them, but I was just saying old as in timewise. Also I believe new displays are coming. - minideezel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3But i just can't see having the iSight as a permanent option, what if you wanted 3 30" spanning ur desk, you wouldn't want a iSight in each display now would you, you would only want the one center display, so it would have to be a built to order feature. I can also just see a update coming to the iSight, not completely removing the stand alone. They are just going to update the stand alone i have a feeling
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"I wouldn't be surprised if they simply released the same aluminium displays with an iSight dot at the top."
I would. - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2With 3x 30" displays, each with a camera, you could video conference with up to what, 9 other people? That would be pretty cool if they added support for that in iChat. I'm not saying they will or it's likely, just that there could be a use for 3 iSights at one station.
- morphie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Romured new Displays.... Just like last time at wwdc?
- Schnep97, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its Apple were talking about. The price will stay high.
- mikeod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What should mac mini owners use for a webcam now?
- minideezel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry, The only Apple Display i have looked in depth on are there older models, they only have one dvi and no other cables, i just assumed that the more recent displays would have the same, that is crap that they have 3 cables.
- brianez21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You can just buy a typical USB webcam, they should work fine on your Mac.
- mck9235, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It would make sense to integrate the iSight into the Cinema Displays, although I can't see any reason for them to stop selling a standalone version of the iSight, it can't be a money loser. The only reason I'd pick a CD over a Dell would be the design, although Dell's monitors do look good, nothing can beat that beautiful CD.
- Jumangi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow, LCD monitors with cameras built into them? What amazing new pieces of technology will Apple come up with next?
- willlisac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about them integrating IR Receivers into their Cinema Displays? I couldn't care less about iSight integration. I just want to be able to control frontrow on my mac pro with my gorgeous 30" display! Frontrow is the only reason I almost bought the 24" iMac over the Mac Pro... If they announce new displays with IR Receivers I'll buy one immediately.
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is incredibly important.
- kethraal, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6"But I'm still not going to get one. The Dell displays look just as great and are half the price(in most cases)."
Oh... so you know what is going to be introduced? Or are you just making the assumption that the looks and pricing will be what you're used to? - roxics, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Stop! Take a step away from the fanboyism for a minute and just think about it. Cinema displays with isights in them. For starters the displays are overpriced. Second, new displays come out every day and most of them are really nice. No reason to get all hyped about one with an Apple logo on it.
Third, building the camera into the display causes two problems, it requires you to sit in a certain position to be picked up by the camera properly and it means you can't use your isight to film other things easily. People should be demanding Apple keep it separate from the display rather then vice versa.
Is it really that big of a deal to have your camera sitting ontop of your display where you can position it the way you want rather then have it fixed into the display bezel?
I'm a mac user but the last thing I'd want a cheap little VGA camera embedded into a $2000 display. Apple can do so much more if they just make a new megapixel USB powered isight camera that is both Mac and PC compatible. That makes so much more sense. - crazyboy1121, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think that would be a great idea. I mean it shouldn't take that much to put an isight into an apple display. They should have the option to have an isight put in beacuse what if you have 2 screens. Just one more reason to buy a Mac Pro!
- InsMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think a built in Isight would be a smart strategy. For those on the fence between a Dell vs. Cin Display the Fire Wire and Isight integrated might be enough for those to pony up a few extra $$ just for the convenience.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"It's not like you can connect a webcam with a VGA/DVI cable, so you could always just unplug the USB/firewire cable..."
Apple makes nice monitors, but the cost is not justified imo. One can just buy a cheaper Dell monitor and make full use of the USB and FireWire ports. It's too easy for them to purchase monitors without cameras for them to go through the bother of getting Apple monitors, only to use them in a crippled state in the name of security. Not to mention that just trusting people to not plug in the camera is a terrible security plan. - Nameless1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3The goverment instalations can just have spray painted the iSight lens or something.
Or at least have the IT guys disable it somehow. - SuitCase874, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5"their displays are an old design by Apple's standards"
Not necessarily. Apple are surviving on a lot of older designs right now - i.e. 2001-era Powerbook, 2003 era Powermac G5, 2004 era iMac G5, 2002 era iBook. Judging from the look of the iTV I think Apple sacked their industrial design department, at least for outside casings. I wouldn't be surprised if they simply released the same aluminium displays with an iSight dot at the top. - zoolander, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Complete bunk. I know this to be true. We will *not* see new Apple displays at Macworld this year.
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Geez man, calm down. They are just new displays.
- minideezel, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Yes you can connect a web cam through the USB in the dvi, The current displays have 2 usb ports on them and the only cable coming out of it is a singe dvi cord.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3so many rumors so few macs so few loud apple fanboys
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4rumored NEW DISPLAYS? i've just ***** my pants. i mean possibly NEW DISPLAYS?
oh crap, i've done it again. - wisedude, on 10/12/2007, -39/+17Yeah I'm the one who sent the tip. Yay, i've proved once and for all that macrumors will publish anything any random ***** sends them! GG
