- EagleOne, on 10/10/2007, -1/+82Hope you guys like my client (I'm Arminius of apolloim.googlecode.com), and please by all means post issues and feature requests. I'm looking for people to help me continue programming, and if you know ObjC/UIKit and would like to help get involved in an opensource project I'd really appreciate it.
Also, help is needed in getting Libpurple (of pidgin/adium) compiled for the iphone. This will allow me to get into the good stuff - video conferencing, great file sending support, and maybe even some VOIP stuff. We'll see, but point being, I could use some help. Contact info is on the page, and if you think you've got the chops, please email me :)
--Arminius - virtualball, on 10/10/2007, -6/+61Woo, now I can IM/SMS/Digg/Listen to Music/Call someone while I drive! :)
- AvidPreatorian, on 10/10/2007, -4/+29all the hacks my iPhone has now, it's such a multi-function device. worthy buy.
- gizmo8500, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20Just one of many small steps towards me getting one.
- mccarron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Arminius great work, keep it up. Maybe I can try to assist once I wrap up my iPhone game project (Blackjack game) in the coming weeks.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Wow, you're really new to the concept of humor. Hint: If you see a smiley (":)"), it might be a joke.
- EagleOne, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10This hasn't been the case so far, but I'm confident the community will overcome whatever breakage that occurs.
We already have a few package managers, and ApolloIM fully supports shimmer - a iphone library that will download and install new versions upon availability. By all means, let apple break it. It gives us something to do on Tuesday nights. - timdorr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Just have the person send the MMS to your email address. A lot of phones do that and it works all the same. And you can send an MMS by using the special email addresses (@tmomail.net, @cingularme.com, etc). It's not native, but it is doable.
- hotsoda, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8My wallet just got a whole lot lighter. Apple refurb store here I come!
- SystemError, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8APPLE: THIS IS STUFF WE WANT SO JUST BUILD IT IN!!!!!!
- leontes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6How does this work in relation to network usage? My ideal IM client would actively connect when connecting to wifi, but disconnect automatically when the phone reverts to EDGE. I wouldn't want to have to actively turn it every time when I'm in wifi range, but also don't want it to use EDGE when I need to be able to passively receive calls.
- KennMac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6This is not true. Calls are forwarded to voicemail while you are using EDGE. If it so happens that you're looking at a webpage that has already completely loaded, you're not using EDGE anymore and the call will go through.
- DaleoftheUK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I love watching all this development, come the release in the UK, there is going to be loads of stuff I need to do.
- KANSUO, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm sure you're aware of these bugs, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to post them:
You are able to erase the text your "buddy" has sent to you
If someone sends you a message while you are typing yours, the text is no longer entered into the field beside the "send" button, but is instead placed into the conversation and not sent your "buddy" - Blabster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Is there any tutorial that shows how to get these apps on the iphone? like a beginner's guide?
- EagleOne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3http://wickedpsyched.net/iphone/libs/
Yup. I was working on just that initially, but got impatient and wanted to make something that works straight. So now I have a pretty usable GUI - that does need a fair amount of tweaking. I've returned to getting purple compiled, but I'm also hoping that some exposure will get some talented people to help me. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3AIM from IRC?! *head implodes*
- EagleOne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Hence Version "-1"
But I'm on it, thanks for your comments :) - KennMac, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6All you haters are just motivation for more third-party apps. MMS is on the list... You're running out of ideas to troll.
- deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The on-screen keyboard really works great. I talk to people on Jive Talk IM all the time and they aren't even aware I am on a phone. (no typos, good speed)
- EagleOne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Look into Pxl
- GREEDOnvrFIRED, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Apple will build it in. Not right away, but that is a good sign as well. It means we are not looking at a 2nd generation iPhone anytime soon. Instead apple will spend a few months cleaning up bugs and making changes. Then when they deem certain applications ready to be native to the iPhone they will acquire them or license them and we will all decide the contents and order of our own menu screen. Personally, I cant wait to put my SMS, Calendar, and Photos buttons in the bottom row where they are easier to reach.
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Has anyone even gotten glib to compile for the iPhone yet? Perhaps it'd be more worth your time to start at the bottom of the dependency tree and work up and not visa versa.
- SoBayJake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2My EDGE connection always seems to block calls. :-( Some iPhone users have the call come thru, others go right to voicemail.
- jtbandes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Looks cool from the pictures (haven't tried it out; don't want to void my warranty). May I suggest that you work on the interfaces a bit? For example, "Disconnect" doesn't seem like it should be a leftBack:-style button. And some of the colors aren't quite consistent with the iPhone UI.
Otherwise, great work, keep it up! - pogitalonx, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Hey guys this is Chris (aka pogi, author of iRCm). I just also wanted to thank you for the support and if you want to help Arminius and I please come to #iphone-uikit on irc.osx86.hu. We're always looking for suggestions and comments so come chat! Thanks again and keep on the lookout for new features coming soon!
--Pogi - Complexium, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Don't want to sound like a partypooper, but who the hell wants to chat on IRC with an on-screen keyboard? (cons/pros)
Still great that people develop stuff for the phone and shows Apple that pushing third party away was stupid. - deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Apple is liberal about these things. They have nothing to lose -- you're still buying the phone, you're still using AT&T. I would expect them to go after SIM hackers aggressively since it's lost revenue but third party apps only make the iPhone a stronger platform
- macslut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thanks for releasing this as beta -1 so that we can see what's coming. I'm really excited about its development, as well as the development of other apps for the iPhone. I wish I could develop for the iPhone, but I'm relatively retarded compared to you guys.
- bleonard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1anyone using the aim client "apolloim" yet and want to comment on it?
- deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Fantastic work so far. My main suggestion (if technically possible) would be to run some sort of backend daemon that can stay connected even went he GUI app quits. Also (again if technically possible) it would be great to use the SMS/Phone/Voicemail notification overlay to notify of new messages after the phone display as been turned off. Thanks for your time & effort.
- NitecrawlerPT, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Can't connect to anything but AOL right now. I'm sure MSN, Yahoo, gTalk, Jabber, and whatever else is out there are coming in due time.
- killerpopiller, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1hallo,
like SMS but only in real time and no letter maximum - aberkman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0there's tons of iphone-hacking related stuff on http://www.irseek.com, for example, check this out : http://www.irseek.com/show.php?pageid=df9a7ce04c5d11dca4ea792f4eccdbf5&hilite=iphone%20hack%20bypass%20att
- Seph7, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Still stupid that apple locked it down in the 1st place, It has to be the least "smart" smart phone on the market. Sure it might be lightning quick and have an amazing GUI but as far as functionality my 2 year old model non smart sony ericsson does more. It's cool that people are hacking the device and making apps but I won't be buying an iPhone before its got 3rd party app support built in with out hacks, and offers me all the functionality of my current phone + some not less.
- jsingh188, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Hello, Just wanted to add that it would be great to add JABBER as one of the IM Services like AIM and MSN. A LOT of people use Jabber as an IM client for work purposes.
Great work! And keep it up!!
Jay. - sparkmonkeyz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Hey, I've met you before, and am good friends with Dave. He just called me and all I have to say is EPIC!!!!!!!!!
- pogitalonx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0We're working on a solution for this. keep reading the news for updates.
- pogitalonx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1funny man, funny.
- sketchstudios, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1anyone know once its installed how to connect it to AIM and MSN and Yahoo servers?
- dugR, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2finally a Native American IM client for the iphone.
- FiP0, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2I think Digg *needs* an iPhone section. Most news to hit the front page talk about that phone. :)
- starheart, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Applications can keep running on the iPhone. Safari does when it is switched from. NESapp does too, and it is a third party application.
- br0ken1128, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1You do have to jailbreak the phone to get this installed, and there's a few very simple methods for doing it .. a graphical installer for mac, and a graphical installer for windows... I've used them both so far and it was simple..
When apple updates however, it does force you to wipe your phone .. but if you sync everything up right before you update, you don't really lose much .. all my pictures, songs .. etc .. came right back ..
Well worth it! - neodorian, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I was thinking the same thing. Still, 3rd party apps = win.
- jameelj, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0you can connect to aim through irc, thats what i do with my smartphone, just connect to im.bitlbee.org and set up an account
- pengas, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Nice work. This app is still not effective as you need to have it launched to use it.
If u get a call, need to surf the web or do anything else the session is terminated.
If that is the case I rather text or call who ever I need to stay in touch with. - pogitalonx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0We're working on it!
- pogitalonx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0awesome! we're working on it! thanks for support.
- flashingcurser, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5Oh crap there goes IRC
