NEW: AFP adds iPhone and iPod touch into Finder for drag/drop
tuaw.com — Insanely awesome iPhone hacker and developer "Core" just finished implementing AFP for the iPhone and iPod touch. This software connects your iPhone (or touch) to your computer using AFP, the AppleTalk Filing Protocol. Your iPhone/touch shows up on your desktop as a disk with full read/write access.

- DaffyDuck, on 11/14/2007, -0/+6That makes no sense.

You do realise that the desktop is a GUI

- leontes, on 11/12/2007, -14/+2Damnit, I want this added functionality without jailbreaking my phone. I don't want to risk a future bricking.
- HOTM, on 11/13/2007, -1/+7Don't update the phone unless its confirmed to be not broken with the update then. It really really isn't that hard.
- royall64, on 11/12/2007, -1/+9jailbreakme.com never bricks.
- meatmcguffin, on 11/12/2007, -0/+16Jailbreaking is safe. Unlocking is not so safe.
There's a huge difference
- Sexton65, on 11/12/2007, -33/+4Figures that you'd need to hack a $1000 Apple product so can do what any $100 no-name brand USB mp3 player can.
- royall64, on 11/12/2007, -1/+21We're hacking the iPhone, not the computer.
- willynilly, on 11/12/2007, -1/+2WTF? He never said you were hacking a computer.
- Giga, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1At $1000, they got ripped off if it wasn't the computer.
- willynilly, on 11/12/2007, -1/+2WTF? He never said you were hacking a computer.
- meatmcguffin, on 11/12/2007, -2/+15You can connect $100 mp3 players to a computer wirelessly?
- specialK16, on 11/12/2007, -9/+1Zune
- toetagger, on 11/12/2007, -1/+7But then you'd have a Zune. Are you wacky?
- GliTCH82, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1And then again, the Zune isn't even $100, so he's also a liar.
- naonao, on 11/12/2007, -0/+16I didn't realize that the iPhone cost $1000 and a USB MP3 player cost $100. Expensive world you're living in.
- willynilly, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2I don't know about the MP3 player, but if you do the math on the iPhone, $1000 isn't far off. Or did you miss the part about the AT&T contract?
- Giga, on 11/12/2007, -1/+1If you bought a different phone on the same AT&T contract you would pay that anyway. Including the contract as part of the phone cost is similar to including your internet bill as part of your modem cost. The contract bill pays for the AT&T service, not the hardware.
- willynilly, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2I don't know about the MP3 player, but if you do the math on the iPhone, $1000 isn't far off. Or did you miss the part about the AT&T contract?
- royall64, on 11/12/2007, -1/+21We're hacking the iPhone, not the computer.
- naonao, on 11/12/2007, -14/+3I'll hold out for a Windows version just so that I can use it with both my PC's. It can be inconvenient at times to have to switch PC's to do things with the iPhone.
- bkemper, on 11/12/2007, -2/+4If you're wondering why you got dugg down, it is because you've added nothing meaningful to the conversation.
- willynilly, on 11/12/2007, -1/+3Or maybe because you misspelled "PCs."
- shafiq, on 11/13/2007, -1/+45dear apple, when are you going to enable this by default? kthxbye
- DarkDx, on 11/12/2007, -11/+1dugg for "kthxbye"
- arjung, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1dugg for the content of the comment, not the 1999-esque ending.
- martelsc, on 11/12/2007, -5/+2Security Alert:
Be careful, since everyone know the user name/password to access your iPhone or iPod touch, they could easily steal your files if you keep AFP activated...- dansmeek, on 11/12/2007, -0/+5well, no. they should have no idea what either my name/password is or yours.. assuming you do what any logical person would do by changing the default password once certain utilities have been installed, then you are safe.
there are a perpetual amount of tutorials on how to do this. and yes, even tutorials on how to change it for (in this case) an iPhone!- BHSPitMonkey, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1Not even tutorials so much, but A SINGLE BASIC UNIX COMMAND.
- martelsc, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3True, but I still think they should have put a note on that subject in the article, since they mention the default root password.
And the human nature being has it is, I am sure a lot of people will try this new hack, but won't take the time to change their password.
- dansmeek, on 11/12/2007, -0/+5well, no. they should have no idea what either my name/password is or yours.. assuming you do what any logical person would do by changing the default password once certain utilities have been installed, then you are safe.
- dansmeek, on 11/12/2007, -0/+7I have been waiting for this for so long! Wow....
Wireless sync (contacts, songs, address book...) soon to follow I imagine. Thanks for all the great work. Steve Jobs would be proud of you (well, if he was 17 he would have) - corester, on 11/12/2007, -1/+12A few folks were worried about default passwords, you can get code to change this from our site over at http://wickedpsyched.net/iphone/unixtools/ We also ported SAMBA a long time back: http://wickedpsyched.net/iphone/samba/ This should work for windows folks who don't have AFP. There is a really nice write up that is less cryptic than our site over here:
http://signalblue.com/iphone/
Glad that so many folks have found this stuff useful!
Best,
-- core - sukimashita, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3If you are using Linux/GNOME, simply enter "sftp://...ip of iphone/ipod..." as location in nautilus and browse/manage your jailbraked and sshd enabled device.
- tomis, on 11/12/2007, -0/+5You know it surprises me that these clearly gifted hackers are only making good hacks for the iPhone. One day after a new release and they've already hacked it. That doesn't exactly speak volumes about how security conscious Apple is. How long until the bad hacks and viruses come out? Seriously. I'm really intrigued that we're only hearing about the 1-day-later hacks that are good.
- TomKarpik, on 11/12/2007, -1/+0You don't understand embedded development vs. "regular development".
With the iPhone, Apple has to secure it, but in a way that they can let themselves in to do updates and whatnot. By definition, this is not secure -- because there's always a deliberate "backdoor" of sorts. A regular Mac running OS X is in a completely different environment, and hence, follows a different model of security. - xurizaemon, on 11/13/2007, -0/+0tomis, this hack is a clever piece of software that adds functionality, not an exploit. you need to have access to the device (and the proper passwords etc) to make it work. ergo it's not a "threat". the word "hack" has a couple of different interpretations - this is a /hack/ not a /crack/ :)

- DeFex, on 11/12/2007, -3/+1Most non apple portable media players can already do that. what is the reason not to allow it by default.
- thekronz, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1Where do I download?
- corester, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1Dear thekronz:
Feel free to read about it here http://wickedpsyched.com/iphone/afp/ then go grab the download from:

- woodsk7, on 11/12/2007, -2/+1http://www.iradioapp.com
- nape, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1this connects to the touch/iphone via wifi right? while this would be handy for throwing roms on, this still isn't a good solution for disk access in general because the touch/iphone only have b/g wifi, so even if you're on a fast 802.11n network, your touch/iphone still bottlenecks the speed and makes it insufferable for putting say a 100+ meg file onto it. im referring to using the touch/iphone as a flash drive to carry files with you. i hope someday some genius can figure out usb file access, if its even possible.
