- tdogzthmn, on 10/10/2007, -7/+489Does this mean I have to go back to my "shady ways" for getting The Office? Oh well, NBC's loss.
- bwayne1, on 10/10/2007, -9/+314I think I enjoyed Engadget's recap the most:
NBC: Ok. So. We'd like to re-negotiate our contract -- top priority is, well, basically we want more money.
Apple: No.
NBC: No what? No re-negotiation? Or no more money?
Apple: No.
NBC: Why don't you guys just charge more money for our shows? That's fine by us.
Apple: Are you new around here? - nace33, on 10/10/2007, -30/+250Screw NBC. Everybody with a DVR, keep skipping commercials and we'll see how long NBC can exist without embracing the future of distribution. Apple can cure this attempt at leverage by releasing an AppleTv with a HDTuner and front row DVR software. We all get NBC HD OTA anyway, why pay for it.? Once again, Screw NBC.
- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -5/+163Dear NBC:
Your antiquated model is rotting beneath you. We all understand what its like to worry about the future, but being incapacitated by it will solve nothing. Embrace new distribution paradigms, or we'll gladly let you die with your joke of a model.
Best Wishes,
Your customers - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+127So they're moving back to torrents :)
Nice one, much cheaper than itunes! - Buckeye70, on 10/10/2007, -0/+97In other news, all torrent sites have announced they will continue to carry NBC's shows.
- apersaud, on 10/10/2007, -2/+75Well its not NBC specifically, its anything tied to Universal (in this case NBC-Universal).
Example, Universal Music Group, Vivendi Universal and NBC-Universal are all NOT renewing their contracts with Apple iTunes.
(same parent company) - Shorties, on 10/10/2007, -5/+77Those *****!, I was planning on getting all my NBC shows from iTunes next year when I am in college because I don't have time for watching TV when its on and I certainly don't have money to get a tivo. Well sorry NBC I love your network, I love universal, but it looks like I am going to have to resort to "Other" methods of getting your content... And if they are going to be on Amazon unbox or another service that uses MS DRM that isnt going to help me as I am on a Mac. So good job NBC I hope you at least start streaming The Office on your site or you are completely alienating the entire Mac consumer base. (Damn this really pisses me off I loved the season pass feature on iTunes and have been working over the summer so that I could subscribe to a bunch of shows this fall season, most of which were on NBC... Looks like they won't be getting my money... too bad). Hello Bittorent.
- lava, on 10/10/2007, -1/+67Just get it from here: http://thepiratebay.org/search/the%20office%20season/0/3/200,600
I'm sure that since you're living in Japan you can use your megafantabulous ridiculobit connection to get it all of the episodes in like, minus 5 minutes. Heck, that's how I get all your country's stuff. And it's not like NBC's going to sue you. - MacintoshSauce, on 10/10/2007, -2/+54They will come crawling back to "The Steve."
- abhiroop, on 10/10/2007, -1/+48I would have thought this would be more popular (as in it hasn't been dugg very much!)
Anyway the more important issue I found is NBC wanting to "package" TV shows. This is the WORST idea ever. I HATE having to deal with packages of any kind. Its such a headache to calculate whether it would be cheaper or not. Even then the savings aren't that great. A related title would be helpful, for example if I were to buy The Office then I'd be more inclined to buy say Evan Almighty, or 40 Year Old Virgin, but I would HATE to have to buy them together.
Any kind of system like that is an annoyance. For example I sometimes prefer to have more voice minutes than texts or vice versa. IN the UK there's a really useful plan where instead of a set minutes and texts u get credit. so lets say for 30 pounds a month u get 180 pounds worth of credit. Then each text is like 10p and each minute is like 20p (or whatever). This way u use it how you like. I wouldn't mind paying a premium for an easy to use system like iTunes, where I don't have to calculate what the cost of package a is v. the cost of package b. - ibeetle, on 10/10/2007, -7/+52NBC: We sell more video on iTunes than anyone else... we make millions.
Apple: Yea.. it has been a great partnership.
NBC: We want more money... millions are not enough... more... more... more... we want to raise the price. Now we have people hooked and they will pay any price we want to charge.
Apple: NO! No, they won't. Video download makes money but raising the price is not the answer.
NBC:Screw you Apple we will take our business elsewhere.
Apple: Where?
NBC: um.... well there... um... well there is URGE... and um... well we don't know, but we are sure there is someone out there that will let us charge $5.00 for the news or old repeats of Adam-12. - redheadguy719, on 10/10/2007, -2/+38for crying out loud, the office was like, always the top tv show whenever a new episode came out! They could have made tons of money with that. DUMBASSES.
- dinkola, on 10/10/2007, -2/+36Hold on a sec. The title of the article in the papers says that NBC are going to end their deal with Apple, then the article says
"The two companies could still reach an agreement on a new contract before their current deal expires. While each side has so far refused to budge, the talks will continue and have been free of acrimony, the person familiar with the matter said."
So, in actual fact they havent decided yet. Which one is it? Great newspaper releasing here-say, where you end up more confused of the facts. - Iwantawii, on 10/10/2007, -1/+34I'll disagree. It's hella convenient for the 2 bucks a week. I travel all the time for work and often get access to the internet for only an hour or two a day. Bittorrent doesn't work so well in areas that you can't forward the ports to your connection.
Besides, it positively supports the future of distribution. For shame, it was a good thing. NBC's loss. - cgreentx, on 10/10/2007, -3/+36I would gladly pay for a legal distribution of the shows I like if they weren't vendor locked.
- netburnr, on 10/10/2007, -4/+31Or you get it off a torrent the next day. well most shows anyway
- MassiveTaTas, on 10/10/2007, -4/+31NBC = STUPID
- dark_helmet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28Next day? how about 45 minutes after it airs.
- plbland, on 10/10/2007, -0/+26I'm sure The Office is available _somewhere_ on the internet...
- readme, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26Universal is getting money-hatted by Microsoft to drop Apple and Blu-Ray.
- null537, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24Limewire? You should just kill yourself.
- nickdngr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23On the west coast, I can pull it from torrents as it airs.
- Dugg2Death, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23So, judging from the above comments.. I'm the only guy here who torrents an episode or 2 to see if I like the series then buys them for a small fee on iTunes if I do? Looks to me like NBC is cutting off their nose to spite their face with this withdrawal.
- bmson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Heroes...
Back to torrent, sorry NBC no money from me. - madskjaer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Damn... Now I won't be able to watch the second season of Heroes in Denmark with the gift cards i bought in the U.S.
- monsterofNone, on 10/10/2007, -7/+26M$TROLL
- JohnQPoster, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22How do we let Universal know that we are displeased with there choice. Does anyone have an email address for these guys. I think it is important to let them know we are unhappy. At this point I will stop watching there shows all together.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22NOOO. I live in Japan and iTunes is the only way for me to get most TV shows. I NEED The Office. Hopefully they get something settled.
- 777twist, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20I'm about to drop my TV watching completely!!!!
This is so ridiculous, networks are canceling shows before they are wrapped up (see "John from Cincy", and a host of others) and for polar opposite reasons... I heard "John from Cincy" was axed because it cost too much, yet HBO also canceled "Lucky Louie" which probably cost them a loaf of bread to make.
Here is the problem I see with what NBC is doing (and the problem with others not joining Itunes in general). Most shows don't have any place you can catch an episode you missed!!! I bought 5 - 7 episodes of various shows because my signal or DVR crapped out and didn't record. Where do I get those now??? Sure that's not a huge take for these guys, but it's still money I spent to get the episode and further more, it keeps me happy as a loyal watching customer.
Now, as for NBC... I have every episode of the Office on Itunes... I could always wait until it comes out on DVD (which I buy as well, but I like having the shows on my Ipod for emergency Office viewing...hehe, is there such a thing?), but I buy the full seasons. Now I actually do this for 2 reasons... ONE, to have the seasons on my Ipod. TWO, to show NBC that this show is great, no matter what Nielsen says.
When the Office is on (not repeats) it rules the roost almost every week on Itunes... That should tell NBC something, and it shouldn't be telling them "well, we can make more money off this show because it's so popular." No, it should be telling them that this is a good tool for them to see which shows are good without the Nielsen Rating slant.
I have a huge problem with Nielsen Ratings... first of off, in my 35 years of life, I have NEVER known one person to be a part of this system. How is that possible? Second, from what I hear, it's base is 90% families... Well sure, a bunch of christian families probably won't like "Lucky Louie"...but I can tell you this, all of my friends and co-workers from 25 - 40 loved the show, yet we aren't Nielsen families so we can't control things.
No, we are stuck with lame shows that are supposed to be "wholesome"...gag!
But hey, I'm about ready to cancel HBO (they are lucky "Curb" is starting up again...otherwise, they might be gone), and with the way networks keep canceling shows before they are wrapped up, I may go back to the way I used to watch shows...IN THE 3rd or 4th season. That's how I was in the past, I made sure a show survived before I watch one episode. - moonaust, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Bit Torrent to the rescue........
- yabos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14I think they want to try and bundle their crappy shows with the popular ones and make more money. There's a reason no one buys the crappy shows.
- pxa270, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14This is just a bit of power play between BigCorps. The TV/film content providers have obviously seen how big iTunes has become for music, giving Apple almost all the negotiating power in online music distribution. So even though the TV/film companies are greedy for the cash that online sales may generate, they also want to prevent iTunes becoming too popular so that Apple can call all the shots like they do with music. That's why a lot of the film studio's haven't jumped on the iTunes train yet.
- themisanthrope, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16I don't know, I smell a rat. A big, fat, influential "partner" rat that puts the MS in NBC, and makes many parts of affiliated websites work less than perfectly when the browser being used isn't Internet Exploder.
- zydeco, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15I'll second tdog. I tried my best to purchase shows legitimately when available. If NBC wants to take that option away, so be it.
- Baelorn, on 10/10/2007, -7/+20"computer OR an Apple Product" I can't fathom who dugg you up for your lack of comprehension skills. I will now be dugg down, but my mission is complete...*****.
- thetanman, on 10/10/2007, -5/+18I love how Apple are such hard asses! I, along with several people I know, have utilized ABC's online player quite a bit. It was really well executed, and who knows how much they reaped in advertising by putting it out when they did. Plus, all the revenue was split ONE WAY. I'm sure NBC has something very similar brewing.
Still, I wouldn't mind watching Dwight on a new iPhone-like iPod video between classes... - gharding, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Simply put: yes.
- Dugg2Death, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Because, it's obvious that more people have an XBox and want to pay to watch media through that system than have multiple computers, use iTunes, and want to watch media on their PCs right??? right??? *chirp* *chirp*
- monsterofNone, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15M$TROLL
- timdorr, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15So, did anyone actually read the article, or just the headline?
"The two companies could still reach an agreement on a new contract before their current deal expires. While each side has so far refused to budge, the talks will continue and have been free of acrimony, the person familiar with the matter said."
There's still a good chance they can work something out. They have 4 months to do so. And considering the hard part of getting the content into the video store is already set up, the contract would only need to be extended on paper only.
Also, I don't get this sudden need for stronger DRM. Who is trading videos ripped from the iTunes store? I've never seen a video like that being traded. Have they even broken iTunes video DRM yet? - Mcwop, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Universal does not care. The old media companies do not have a clue.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+18YOU SO CRAZAAAAY!!!
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17Really? The 360 is the future of video distribution? I must have been crazy to think that more people used iTunes than an XBOX. Thank you for opening my eyes.
- mikalveli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11How much is Microsoft paying you? You have posted 5 or 6 comments sucking their *****.
- TheTap, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Occasionally, I liked the iTunes version because they would offer the extended version' once in a while. However, the copies on alt.binaries.hdtv were always of superior quality so I'll keep going there.
- pmuse, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11When I went to college, I got a little usb adapter that allows me to both WATCH cable on my laptop, and to RECORD it tivo style, without any membership fee. Also, I can cut commercials out and then quickly burn the shows to DVD.
- r3zonance, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Is that in the same way that most people would pay for higher quality DRM-free music?
Cos then, it'll just be back to the "I want it cheaper" argument to continue pirating, once they get higher quality and DRM-free, a la iTunes. - mastercheif, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10GE
- Dugg2Death, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Or
NBC: It's our content we'd like to charge 2x as much for the good episodes as compaired to the filler
Apple: Interesting, well it's our distribution system that allows easy access to your content and we say all episodes will be the same.
NBC: Fine, we'll leave for the XBox
Apple: OK
6 Months later
NBC: Can we come back
Apple: Sure -
