- pbol01, on 12/04/2008, -43/+202I wish Itunes didn't exist
- Nephersir7, on 12/04/2008, -15/+151The greatest thing about it is that its not exclusively tied to Apple products, and unlike iTunes, Songbird is multi-platform and it wont slow down your computer with useless background services and processes.
- amauldin71, on 12/04/2008, -9/+144I'll switch only if Stephen Colbert tells me to.
- MacParrot, on 12/04/2008, -13/+103No podcast support, no CD ripping, no support for the Touch or iPhone. At least two of these should have been addressed before this was released.
- spepin, on 12/04/2008, -7/+78Who the ***** is Stephen Colbert?
Sincerely,
Kanye West. - Aeomyr, on 12/04/2008, -6/+75The annoying thing is that it looks like iTunes
- hawksfan03, on 12/03/2008, -7/+61The only thing that keeps me away is that it doesn't integrate nice with downloading podcasts. I've got 20+ podcast subscriptions through iTunes and there isn't an easy way to add in those url's to auto download new podcasts that I can find. If anyone knows how to do this please let me know.
- boombume, on 12/04/2008, -1/+53He WAS speaking for himself. He didn't say "Everyone wishes itunes didn't exist."
- IamSunstorm, on 12/04/2008, -6/+47Tried it, gave up after the 15th minute of it trying to index my library.
Why do I need a web browser in my media player anyway? - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -2/+41Blame Apple and their monopolistic tactics for the non support of Touch or iPhone.
- maexus, on 12/04/2008, -5/+41I'm on OSX and songbird runs slower than iTunes, which is sad because I'm looking for an iTunes alternative. Plus the lack of podcasts is killin me. I'm sure these issues will be addressed in future updates. I hope at least.
- pfranz, on 12/04/2008, -1/+34Not sure how likely that is. iTunes updates started encrypting the database on iPods (including iPod Touch and iPhone).
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cfm?newsid=1 ...
Even with DB access, it sounds unlikely they'd have that access to the iPhone or iPod Touch without jailbraking it first.
I really like apple products, but I hate these artificial limitations. It sucks there isn't any decent competition for them. - TunaFishGangsta, on 12/04/2008, -8/+40iTunes is about the most bloated software I've ever seen. And I really hate that you cannot copy music back to your computer, and that you are limited in options. I basically want to drag music over to my ipod, and then delete it from my computer. Later on, I will copy it back over from the ipod to the computer, if I feel like it. I'm currently using Rhythmbox for that. It's simple and it does the job.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -5/+34"it can only be accessed by using iTunes"
Which is asinine. You should be able to go to the iTunes store like any other Web site and buy music directly through a standard browser. In their efforts to provide a cutesy "all-in-one" experience, Apple creates a cumbersome and needlessly obscure system. - JoeF8577, on 12/04/2008, -4/+27YAH BRO, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT 7000?
HA!
I HAVE LIKE TEN MILLION TRILLION LOLOLOLOLOLOMFG! - j035u5, on 12/04/2008, -5/+27I've got all the podcasts i had in iTunes as subscriptions in Songbird, just search for the rss feed on the podcaster's website. Just cause they dont call it podcasts, doesnt mean it doesn't do the same thing. The word podcast is so 2007
- semitone36, on 12/04/2008, -0/+21You can customize the theme. Mine is all black with a blue button scheme and gold stars on the song rating. Go to http://addons.songbirdnest.com/tag/theme to download themes. I use YABS.
- MacParrot, on 12/04/2008, -1/+20I understand when people make comments relevant to the topic or actually read the article before saying something unrelated.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+20"iTunesDB is a proprietary encryption that Apple is actively protecting (by takedown notice - see the bluwiki ipodhash takedown issue & EFF)"
Reverse-engineering for compatibility is allowed by law. Someone just needs to have the balls and cash to stand up to this *****.
Apple has enthusiastically become as anti-consumer a force as the MPAA or RIAA, crippling its products to spite those who want something better than their amateurish (and appropriately FREE) iTunes. iTunes isn't sold, so there's simply no excuse for trying to force people to use it.
"or the ability to connect (legally) to the cell network"
Again, "legally"? If you've paid for service, then service you are owed. It's immaterial what device (and especially what OPERATING SYSTEM on that device) you use to obtain that service.
When did we become such a society of spineless toadies, who not only allow ourselves to be denied what we paid for, but who actively excuse and seek out that denial? Grow a ***** nut and step up and CLAIM WHAT IS YOURS, WITHOUT ASKING FOR PERMISSION. - ZombieSociety, on 12/04/2008, -0/+18I know, right? Winamp is awesome for not having an animal mascot.
...oh, wait. - baldgye, on 12/04/2008, -0/+17man this is a HUGE improvment, I remeber the songbird of old and jesus it was terrible...
- Tarviathun, on 12/04/2008, -2/+18The three next greatest things about Songbird are the simple facts that a) it doesn't *require* you to download Quicktime (kinda a more specific instance of Nephersir's statement), b) it has extensions, and c) it's open source. While it has its issues, the amount by which the quality increases per-release is substantially larger then that of iTunes, which really hasn't changed much at all, aside from getting more and more bloated with Apple crap.
And you can trust that practically any major issue you have with the program is shared by some flustered and ideologically driven coder who feels nothing but zealous rage. Eventually, given a large enough distribution of normal users being annoyed with the program, the number of hateful programmers will accumulate to the point where one of them actually does something about it. With enough time, Songbird will eventually be the perfect music player. - goodchild999, on 12/04/2008, -1/+17What i like: Integrated browser and how its ridiculously easy to install plugins, thats really great.
- humptyz, on 12/04/2008, -0/+16Check out MediaMonkey if you're using Windows, http://www.mediamonkey.com . Handles huge libraries with no problems, can do mass tag editing, convert between song formats, auto-rename files based on their metadata, burn mp3 CDs. You can even use VBScript to edit your songs; something I used when I re-tagged the individual songs of DJ sets. Moved the DJ from the artist field to the album artist field and then split the title field on the first dash character and moved the first element of the array to the artist field.
- Azerael, on 12/04/2008, -9/+25Wake me when it can sync my iPod Touch. Tried it out this morning, doesn't even notice it's connected.
Otherwise, the interface is nice. Like iTunes if it didn't look like it was designed 10 years ago. - adml_shake, on 12/04/2008, -1/+15Itunes was a great idea when it was launched, an easy to use all in one platform for buying and managing all your music files. But over the years they've just added everything under the sun to it assuming that you would own it at some point I guess. And it's become bloated and slow. They need to give people who only do music a slim downed version to use with out a lot of the other bells and whistles they think we need.
- solidus636, on 12/04/2008, -3/+17Songbird takes about 5 times longer to start up than iTunes does on Vista for me. However, once it's started, I think it's a lot faster in general.
The only thing keeping me from uninstalling iTunes completely is the fact that Songbird has no iPhone support. Give me that, and I will gladly migrate. - FredFredrickson, on 12/04/2008, -0/+13Yes, no fault shall be placed on the almighty coding of an Apple product.
- flashboy131, on 12/04/2008, -4/+16will do.
- jads, on 12/04/2008, -1/+13...and the other two?
- sdive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+11The Last.fm integration is pretty neat
- bog500, on 12/04/2008, -1/+12If you want something fast, try foobar2000
- Cglass, on 12/04/2008, -0/+11I know people were concerned with Songbird handling a large volume of music pre 1.0, has this changed now? I also was reading about some performance issues in general, does anyone have a good review regarding issues like these?
- gtluke, on 12/04/2008, -4/+15The best part about this is that its not a SIXTY MB mp3 player that crashes my computer
- zerock, on 12/04/2008, -0/+11yeah have same issue as you. podcast is a must for me.
- gazzagw, on 12/04/2008, -1/+12Bittorrent does only the download part well, it has no other functions.
- DBeta, on 12/04/2008, -0/+11Haven't tried version 1.0, but version 0.7 was about a million times more responsive than version 0.5. So if you haven't tried it in a while, it will work far better than it did in the past. If you compare it to iTunes it, at the very lease, is no more sluggish.
- solmakou, on 12/04/2008, -0/+11Not only is Winamp around, but winamp really whips the llama's ass.
- ashura001, on 12/04/2008, -1/+12For some reason, I read that as "I remember when songbird was old and jesus was terrible..."
- pbol01, on 12/04/2008, -1/+11The vanguard of your destruction!
- kaniz, on 12/04/2008, -0/+10Question: does iTunes suck as bad on Mac as it does on Windows? I've generally only used iTunes in the past to manage my iPod - but when it was only 2 gigs, it was just a "drag track to my mp3 player". Now I have a 16g iTouch, and have tried to use it a bit more to manage ID3 tags/image art/renaming/etc - and it BLOWS. Having the UI go non-responsive for extended periods of time and thinking its crashed just because I updated an ID3 tag seems unacceptable.
Been using Media Monkey for that stuff now, but just wondering - is it this bad on the mac also? if so - why do people put up with it? - Mithivh, on 12/04/2008, -0/+10I don't know whether to digg you up for your wit, or dig you down because you're pretending to be Kanye West.
- ErhanBd, on 12/04/2008, -1/+10You don't. That's why i use banshee to organize my library on linux.
- pbol01, on 12/04/2008, -0/+9I agree about Itunes, but WinAmp is by no means perfect, albeit I use it...
Think the main error of ALL media players (except Amarok) is that they have no proper database interface. When you have a large collection of music, you really need your media player to use a real database like MySQL. My winamp is really slow... But it is lightning fast compared with Itunes and WMP.
And the installer for Winamp doesn't come in a 125 MB lump of bad code, like others... - pgiven, on 12/04/2008, -0/+9Right click on the pane on the right hand side and click "New Subscription" - just paste in the URL of the page containing the podcast, for example twit.tv. It works...really, really well.
- MacParrot, on 12/04/2008, -0/+9Yes...and you don't
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+10And does it offer the basic functionality that iTunes dropped the ball on? For example:
1. Does it detect new music that has been added to the directories under its control? iTunes, after all these versions, STILL doesn't detect new music added to your music directory.
2. Does it have a "sync" button or command that's always available (when a compatible device is plugged in)? iTunes inexplicably disables the "sync iPod" menu item when you have auto-syncing off. Duh, Apple, that's BACKWARD: If auto-syncing were ON, we wouldn't need to manually kick off a sync. We turn auto-syncing OFF because we WANT to kick off a sync manually.
This is stuff that EphPod (the original and free music manager for the iPod under Windows) handled with ease many years ago, but Apple still can't get together. - ZombieSociety, on 12/04/2008, -2/+11Yes.
APPLE INVENTED DIGITAL MUSIC.
This mean...just SO knows what he's talking about. Everything he says is important. And also correct. - AirRaven, on 12/04/2008, -0/+9It's a skin.
