- victoria06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Hell yeah, that is awesome,
I bet you there are a ton of other people that are doing this, as I did it myself, but made it actually INTO the top of my computers box... a little metal work and screws and I just pop my nano on top of my box, its out of the way and easy to access... - Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20this is better than any dock I've ever seen
- famousdave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14"grind off multipin edges and locking tangs" Never mind, I just read the caption.
- famousdave, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19It looks amazing but you need to squeeze the sides of the plug to disconnect the ipod. Did you just break those little teeth off?
- kcmcgruff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This is excellent! For those who like a clean look desk (coughwifecough) this would be perfect! I can understand the concerns for when there is a new iPod purchase, as the dimensions change, etc. However, keep this in mind...if it is not a big deal to carve up the desk to begin with, run with it! I would suggest not using epoxy to hold the dock in place if it bothers you...a couple of small screws should hold it firmly in place, and are removable....THEN, when a new one is purchased, and you need to do more trim work, it isn't too much of a hassle to lift the dock out, trim a bit more out if needed, then replace. Seriously, if you carve up the desk once, a little additional trim is not that big of a deal.
- TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6His "volume control" as you called it is actually from Griffin Technologies. I have one myself, and it's basically there just to look cool. Sure I use it for adjusting my volume and pressing down to mute, but really it's useless except for the potential "wow" factor.
- AngryPenguin47, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6its minimalist because it reduces the amount of desk clutter.
- Grodius, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Seems like if he wanted to move his comp around or maybe get a new ipod in a couple of years, he would have a worthless hole in his desk.
Its cool looking, but a bit too permanent of a mod IMO - Lacero, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8This is a great idea for my solid cherry oak desk!
- stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5All he'll have to do is put a new insert in the space. Bam...new dock. The general size & shape likely won't change. As for the moving things around on his desk...I don't know about you, but my desk has looked the same for like 6 years. I'll probably end up with a *new* desk before I change where things go! :)
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I bet you there are a ton of other people that are doing this, as I did it myself, but made it actually INTO the top of my computers box... a little metal work and screws and I just pop my nano on top of my box, its out of the way and easy to access..."
this was my second thought after seeing this (first was..."daaaaamn that's smooth") and that's something I would do...
take some pics, post to flikr and you've got yourself a frontpage story dude! - cavemonkey50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Looks like the Logitech Media Play Cordless Mouse: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/CA/EN,CRID=2135,CONTENTID=9340
- Caius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That is cool, all I did was mod a mini iPod's dock to fit the universal adapter for a nano into it. Saved me buying a new nano dock!
- rbvmusic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That looks really cool, one of the best docks I've seen so far.
- chrism1128, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Let's see $30 and ten minutes at Target
vs.
Half a day crawling around under my desk
Power tools making a mess
screwing up my desk
and a strong chance of failure
Oh hell, I'd do it any way! - the_witch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Good idea, nice application. DIY can be a good thing!
- doubleClicks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wow..how come i never thought about it...apple should release something..like iDesk to match with rest of their products. built in ipod dock(s)..built-in power supply for macbook, etc etc..
- abeg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4he ground them off
http://www.flickr.com/photos/simplesimon/81794992/in/set-1747665/ - abeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Shopping at target VS playing with power tools.... No contest!!!
- Caius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Got links to this anywhere? Be an interesting read.
- samsoffes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3save the money, rock on. my desk has a glass to though... o well. good idea.
- Anthraxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would so do that, I have a $50 (AUD) Ikea desk, but its 5 cm (2 inches) thick :(. And I'd need a new iPod-to-USB cable thingo, which are a rip, like all 1st party iPod accessories
- LuckyPhil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This has inspired me to do the same. Great idea, and I won't feel guilty for carving up this desk as it's an old ugly bugger as it is ;-) Thanks for sharing - +digg
- mementh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well he could leave it there :) he might have had that desk for 10 years seup that way?
- editor182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2(slaps forehead) why didn't I think of that? bravo
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Kids, don't try this at work.
- bizzay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice work, but I agree. I also use my desk for art and graphics (the traditional way) and would have no desire to cut into it. He seems to have put it in an odd spot that may have been good for the ipod, but take away the monitor and it just seems out of place.
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cool idea but i don't like the position... maybe i'll try it in the future...
- shawmaan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Nice. Cool idea.
- KingMeatwad4th, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really like the minimalist dock idea. I have a 60GB video iPod and took an old iPod box, cut out the bottom and pushed an iPod dock adapter into the top and slapped on an Apple logo sticker and it looks great next to my Dell, gasp, monitor. (Good price). And works just as well. It seems a little excessive to pay 40 bucks for a dock I made in 20 mins at home with some glue, an old iPod box, and scissors. I love homemade stuff, and also seeing what people come up with! Nice mod!
- NOFXY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2exactly what the angry penguin said. its minimalist because it looks very nice and clean. not because it takes no effort to make.
- isdereks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2couldyou imagine apple coming out with their own desk to follow suit to their new boombox. can anyone say ifurniture? my whole work area is going to be basked in white furniture. maybe we can get a lamp that "sleeps" to match our hardware.
- recipher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Check IMG_0016, you have to "grind off multipin edges and locking tangs." There are two little bumps on each side that lock into the iPod that you have to take off.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3...unless you do computer carpentry
- stoavio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very cool idea but now unfortunately he isn't able to bring that USB cord with him and his iPod when he travels. Oh well, I think they're cheap, and now he has a cool/cost-effective dock.
- Panoctopi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Brilliant! That's so in sync with the conceptual creativity of the iPod and Apple products in general. Well done.
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He might have to make the hole in the desk a bit bigger. He'd probably need a new cable, too. No big deal.
- Masa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, at least at the cable that came with my iPod Nano, those teeth are so tiny that they are practically useless. So, the cable comes off without any effort. Just pull it.
- mikedpirone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hopefully when I go to get my iPod serviced today I'll wind up with a new cable I can hack up to try something like this.
- recipher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jack... you suck!
- Archaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seems like they shop at Thinkgeek.com
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, pretty cool. But what happens if he needs to update the firmware and you need to use the wall outlet to do so? Can he removed the cable or does he have an extra one? Also, as many other users have asked, what about squeezing the sides to release the iPod? Maybe he figured something out. Looks cool anyway.
- lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's too bad he'll have to make a bigger hole when he gets a new iPod.
- supersly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Instead of grinding off the locking prongs on the docking cable, just use a small zip tie and cinch it around the squeeze button release. That way you can reverse the mod if necessary. That's what I did for my DIY nano dock.
- optimus008, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My ballz.
- shadowmoses, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cool but it cost him the whole desk pretty much still digg'd
- AngryPenguin47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not an apple fan, but good mod.
- Laythor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great Ipod mod.. now i'm just curious to find out what he's doing with the four battery powered toilet bowl scrubbers....
- mackoid101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, if he got a new iPod, all he's have to do is cut away the glue bonging the cable to the 'dock' insert. He could then use an insert for his new iPod instead. As for moving his computer around, there's always USB cable extenders. Soon we'll be on wireless USB... :P
- DiddyWolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Forget the dock, I want that desk!
