Minimalist iPod Dock Installed Into Desk
flickr.com — "I needed an IPOD dock so I used the free insert and cable that came with it to make a minimalist one." He installed the dock right into the desk. Fairly easy, but, interesting idea.

- phphreak, on 10/12/2007, -58/+11Wow..and this took you how long? You could have spent the time at work and earned a few bucks to actually buy a dock. Just kidding.
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20this is better than any dock I've ever seen
- shawmaan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Nice. Cool idea.
- famousdave, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19It looks amazing but you need to squeeze the sides of the plug to disconnect the ipod. Did you just break those little teeth off?
- makinde, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3same exact question I have...
- Masa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, at least at the cable that came with my iPod Nano, those teeth are so tiny that they are practically useless. So, the cable comes off without any effort. Just pull it.
- abeg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4he ground them off

- famousdave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14"grind off multipin edges and locking tangs" Never mind, I just read the caption.
- kinkysexradio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3sweet idea. Well done.
- rbvmusic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That looks really cool, one of the best docks I've seen so far.
- Lacero, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8This is a great idea for my solid cherry oak desk!
- Infin1ty, on 10/12/2007, -18/+4Hah - thats what i thought of too
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -30/+1``vd
- victoria06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Hell yeah, that is awesome,
I bet you there are a ton of other people that are doing this, as I did it myself, but made it actually INTO the top of my computers box... a little metal work and screws and I just pop my nano on top of my box, its out of the way and easy to access...- Caius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Got links to this anywhere? Be an interesting read.
- eastblu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1This is very nice
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I bet you there are a ton of other people that are doing this, as I did it myself, but made it actually INTO the top of my computers box... a little metal work and screws and I just pop my nano on top of my box, its out of the way and easy to access..."
this was my second thought after seeing this (first was..."daaaaamn that's smooth") and that's something I would do...
take some pics, post to flikr and you've got yourself a frontpage story dude!
- Caius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That is cool, all I did was mod a mini iPod's dock to fit the universal adapter for a nano into it. Saved me buying a new nano dock!
- the_witch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Good idea, nice application. DIY can be a good thing!
- Grodius, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Seems like if he wanted to move his comp around or maybe get a new ipod in a couple of years, he would have a worthless hole in his desk.
Its cool looking, but a bit too permanent of a mod IMO- stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5All he'll have to do is put a new insert in the space. Bam...new dock. The general size & shape likely won't change. As for the moving things around on his desk...I don't know about you, but my desk has looked the same for like 6 years. I'll probably end up with a *new* desk before I change where things go! :)
- mackoid101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, if he got a new iPod, all he's have to do is cut away the glue bonging the cable to the 'dock' insert. He could then use an insert for his new iPod instead. As for moving his computer around, there's always USB cable extenders. Soon we'll be on wireless USB... :P
- mementh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well he could leave it there :) he might have had that desk for 10 years seup that way?
- tiuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Cool, I had the idea to do this with my 60 GB 5th gen a few weeks ago, since I have a cheapass desk that I couldn't care less about. What stopped me was my total lack of woodworking knowledge/skills. Still might attempt it though, since it's not like it has to be a super clean hole or anything, since the adapte will cover the edges. Digg for great minds that think alike ;)
- shadowmoses, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cool but it cost him the whole desk pretty much still digg'd
- Infin1ty, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1x2 on that.
- LuckyPhil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This has inspired me to do the same. Great idea, and I won't feel guilty for carving up this desk as it's an old ugly bugger as it is ;-) Thanks for sharing - +digg
- Fowz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great stuff, but man i would be too scared to do that to my desk
- bizzay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice work, but I agree. I also use my desk for art and graphics (the traditional way) and would have no desire to cut into it. He seems to have put it in an odd spot that may have been good for the ipod, but take away the monitor and it just seems out of place.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My desk is glass so alas im not gonna be able to do this, however it does look good.
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Kids, don't try this at work.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3...unless you do computer carpentry
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2In a word: snazzy
- Chairmclee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Nice, but what happens when he gets a newer iPod?
- glialisback, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0the insert should be the same size for all iPods
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He might have to make the hole in the desk a bit bigger. He'd probably need a new cable, too. No big deal.
- stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Simple, clean, useful...nice desk mod. :)
- dbavaria, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7Am I the only one who thinks this is the most ridiculous "mod" ever? Calling this "Minimalist" is far from reality, a minimalist would just place a real dock on top of the desk rather than go to all the trouble of curring a hole through a solid wood table, grinding pins, mixing epoxy.... Second, a new ipod comes out every 6 months, I hope you have no plans on upgrading, well that and you totally fcked up your desk :)
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Couldn't agree more. Actually, he obviously doesn't need to save money. Anyone see his monitor? Mouse? Volume control?
- TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6His "volume control" as you called it is actually from Griffin Technologies. I have one myself, and it's basically there just to look cool. Sure I use it for adjusting my volume and pressing down to mute, but really it's useless except for the potential "wow" factor.
- AngryPenguin47, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6its minimalist because it reduces the amount of desk clutter.
- NOFXY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2exactly what the angry penguin said. its minimalist because it looks very nice and clean. not because it takes no effort to make.
- StuartLong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The desk is cheap plywood and it lifts out since gravity is all there is to holding it. A new ipod will likely have a bottom mounted connector.
- kcmcgruff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This is excellent! For those who like a clean look desk (coughwifecough) this would be perfect! I can understand the concerns for when there is a new iPod purchase, as the dimensions change, etc. However, keep this in mind...if it is not a big deal to carve up the desk to begin with, run with it! I would suggest not using epoxy to hold the dock in place if it bothers you...a couple of small screws should hold it firmly in place, and are removable....THEN, when a new one is purchased, and you need to do more trim work, it isn't too much of a hassle to lift the dock out, trim a bit more out if needed, then replace. Seriously, if you carve up the desk once, a little additional trim is not that big of a deal.
- Anthraxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would so do that, I have a $50 (AUD) Ikea desk, but its 5 cm (2 inches) thick :(. And I'd need a new iPod-to-USB cable thingo, which are a rip, like all 1st party iPod accessories
- samsoffes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3save the money, rock on. my desk has a glass to though... o well. good idea.
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cool idea but i don't like the position... maybe i'll try it in the future...
- chrism1128, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Let's see $30 and ten minutes at Target
vs.
Half a day crawling around under my desk
Power tools making a mess
screwing up my desk
and a strong chance of failure
Oh hell, I'd do it any way!- abeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Shopping at target VS playing with power tools.... No contest!!!
- torbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When i first got my shuffle when it first came out i did something like this. Took a usb extention cable, drilled a hole on my desk, and super glued it into that hole. saved me about 25 bucks from buying the shuffle dock.
- eastblu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Awesome job
- tituskashmarek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1very good job, i will be doing this for sure!
- hermes25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what is the model of the logitech mouse shown?
- cavemonkey50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Looks like the Logitech Media Play Cordless Mouse: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/CA/EN,CRID=2135,CONTENTID=9340
- asphnctrsezwhat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That's the logitech media play mouse
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I have the same one :D
Awsome mouse :)
- maicowchoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nice dock, but drilling into the desk? Isn't that a little extreme?
- KingMeatwad4th, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really like the minimalist dock idea. I have a 60GB video iPod and took an old iPod box, cut out the bottom and pushed an iPod dock adapter into the top and slapped on an Apple logo sticker and it looks great next to my Dell, gasp, monitor. (Good price). And works just as well. It seems a little excessive to pay 40 bucks for a dock I made in 20 mins at home with some glue, an old iPod box, and scissors. I love homemade stuff, and also seeing what people come up with! Nice mod!
- hollywoodone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that looks nice but won't it be useless for any other ipod beccause only the nano has a dock adapter like that.
- jak119, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My friend had an idea to do this to his desk, too bad this guy got to it first. Although it is a very good idea and he did a very good job of doing it.
- GGERG15, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i am so doing that.... SOLID
- akifbayram, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1OmG, i suare to god a was gonna do that, but im only 14 and i dont have an ipod (My sis does).................. a rrrgrgrgrhhh, SO MAD, man if i only did. Did this guy read my MIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good job dude, but you could of just sanded sum of the dock to make it fit, becasue one day when you, i duno, go somewere and u wanna bring that cable, w.e dont listen to me. Nice,
- Panoctopi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Brilliant! That's so in sync with the conceptual creativity of the iPod and Apple products in general. Well done.
- jeffburg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0good idea.... but the brilliance exuded here I do not think is worth a digg
but it is cool - DiddyWolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Forget the dock, I want that desk!
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, pretty cool. But what happens if he needs to update the firmware and you need to use the wall outlet to do so? Can he removed the cable or does he have an extra one? Also, as many other users have asked, what about squeezing the sides to release the iPod? Maybe he figured something out. Looks cool anyway.
- abeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You don't need to use an outlet to update your firmware.. the new iPods don't even come with an AC adapter.
- AngryPenguin47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not an apple fan, but good mod.
- fluid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Very clean looking dock. Amazing.
- WRoach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Integrated laptop portable audio player dock (patends pending) anyone? Better yet, bluetooth eanbled PAPs. Cables are such a pain. Now all we need is a way to leech power wirelessly...
- mikedpirone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hopefully when I go to get my iPod serviced today I'll wind up with a new cable I can hack up to try something like this.
- jmholloway, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This is great
- lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's too bad he'll have to make a bigger hole when he gets a new iPod.
- mochaman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0For his sake, I hope that Apple doesn't change the connector in future iPods.
