Microsoft pushing IE 7 downloads on Windows users
west.wwu.edu — In an apparent bid to rapidly gain share of the online browser market dominated by rival IE 6, Microsoft is leveraging its vast Windows Update install base to recommend that Windows users also download and install the latest version of its IE web browser.

- bjornski, on 03/21/2008, -6/+3Gee, MS offering to upgrade MS software though the "automatic updates" option that this person obviously had checked.
The horrors! - BobOki, on 03/21/2008, -3/+7http://digg.com/apple/Apple_pushing_Safari_downloa ...
Somehow its not ok in this other thread though....- bjornski, on 03/21/2008, -5/+5Sorry to rain on your anti-MS parade.
This window pops up when you turn on automatic updates. It's not the same as "hey, your video player needs an update! PSYCH! We've got a new browser! Check it out!"- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/21/2008, -4/+3Yeah, that's completely different than "Your operating system needs an update! PSYCH! We've got a new browser! Get it *****!"
- bjornski, on 03/21/2008, -3/+4If you don't want to update your OS, then turn off the automatic updates and avoid going to the Windows Update page.
The window that's being bitched about in this thread is one that you get when you use auto-update. Don't whine about it, just shut it off. If you don't want to update, don't. It doesn't pop up on you with stuff you didn't request. "Your Quicktime is old, INSTALL iTUNES AND SAFARI TOO!" - BobOki, on 03/21/2008, -3/+4Oops sorry to ***** in your cheerios, but turning off automatic updates DOES not stop the automatic updates. Microsoft releases what they deem as "emergency" patches which are force installed on ALL windows machine applicable, including servers. The problem is, when they do this, it also installs all waiting patches with silent install option selected, FORCING the install of IE7. Thanks for playing.
- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/21/2008, -3/+2Are you even listening to yourself? It's no different. On my Windows machine, I WANT automatic updates because of security patches and hotfixes. Automatic updates are intended for this alone. IE7 isn't a Windows Operating System update. It's pushing their software on users. The big difference is that Apple only informs you about safari's availability when updating their product, not an OS. If you are using the FREE version of some one's product, you shouldn't complain about one little advertisement, but if you want to bitch about it just use VLC player. It's better anyway.
But that isn't the real issue. From reading all of your other comments, it's clear that you are a Microsoft fanboy and love bashing people for being "anti-MS" when you are really just being a hypocrite.
Sorry buddy, but any one who is really into computer systems and their functionality almost always prefer UNIX-based systems. They use UNIX, Linux, and Mac OS X. No viruses, no memory gobbling, less lock-ups.... you Microsoft nuts are the oddballs. The only argument that you can use to say your OS of choice is better is "you can play more games! So many games! oh god, I need games!" which just makes you all sound even more retarded because we primarily use our computers for productivity purposes. - MisterThePlague, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1well said!! + 1

- MisterThePlague, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Ummm...Automatic Updates are turned on in Windows by default. IE 7 is also pushed as a "critical update" through the regular Windows Update interface, see:

- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/21/2008, -4/+3Yeah, that's completely different than "Your operating system needs an update! PSYCH! We've got a new browser! Get it *****!"
- deadbaby, on 03/22/2008, -0/+2I think it's fine in both cases as long as it's an optional install. If you are downloading and installing software from a company the choice is yours to let them in the door.
- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/22/2008, -0/+1exactly. that's what's so hilarious about this thread. Because windows users are saying "this is an outrage!" and apple users are saying "yeah, cool.... but microsoft does it too." and the windows users are just going "no! no! It's different! You're wrong!"
- bjornski, on 03/21/2008, -5/+5Sorry to rain on your anti-MS parade.
- LANjackal, on 03/21/2008, -2/+2Buried for being nonsense. IE7 is a LOT more secure than IE6, simply put. The upgrade is worthwhile, whether or not you use IE. Besides, just because you've upgraded the browser doesn't mean you'll actually use it. I keep all my browsers (IE, Opera, FF) up to date, but for all practical purposes I use FF only.
- MisterThePlague, on 03/21/2008, -0/+3You don't get it. It's in reference to this popular story from yesterday:

- DiggLive, on 03/21/2008, -4/+2You're forgetting one thing:
IE 7 was offered as an UPGRADE from IE 6.
Safari was offered as a NEW INSTALL to users that didn't even have it.
Buried as inaccurate.- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/21/2008, -1/+3yes, safari was offered as a new install to users that are already using apple products on their pc.... I mean, Microsoft would NEVER try to push a separate piece of software on Windows users *cough* windowsliveonecare (not free)*cough* MSNmessenger *cough* livesearch *ahem*genuineadvantage
Sorry... this cold is killing me- DiggLive, on 03/22/2008, -2/+2Apparently, you've never used Vista. I got Windows Live Messenger/Mail/One Care by manually using their installers. I didn't get a prompt saying, "Congratulations! You've just finished installing Vista! Here's some software of ours that you can install!"
That's exactly what Apple is doing with iTunes, but feel free to bend the truth.- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/22/2008, -1/+1are you forgetting about the Vista feature called "anytime upgrade"? where they try to sell you more ***** constantly? Where they give you little reminders in the windows update settings left and right? You're just a tool trying to bash apple for doing something every one under the ***** sun does. Besides, from the sound of it, why would your pompous ass even have quicktime or itunes? You're probably too caught up in the zune *****.

- MisterThePlague, on 03/22/2008, -1/+2How DARE Apple offer users a free piece of software. The NERVE!!
- deadbaby, on 03/22/2008, -1/+2IE was originally bundled in a monopolistic and predatory action which Microsoft was found guilty of not only in US courts but also the EU and elsewhere. It's hard to directly compare the two. At least you have the choice of not installing Safari. I cannot choose to use Windows without IE. (other than removing the shortcut on the desktop and iexplore.exe)
- DiggLive, on 03/22/2008, -1/+1This isn't about pre-installed software in an OS. It's about using the install base of iTunes to install Safari on other people's systems, since hardly anyone wants it otherwise. And Mac users can't choose to install OSX without Safari either, so your point is stupid.
- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/22/2008, -1/+1Well, let's see.... try to uninstall safari on a mac... it works. Try to uninstall IE on a PC... it isn't even an option.

- MyNameIsJoe, on 03/22/2008, -1/+2Have you ever tried to uninstall IE? It won't let you.
These update notices annoyed me to high heaven when they came up. My employer told us not to upgrade because their site was not compatible with the new version. So I had to keep telling my computer not to upgrade till the site got updated.- JEWestbrookJR, on 03/22/2008, -1/+1yup. IE7 ***** up work environments has kept me in business. I'm a Microsoft Certified Professional, a Microsoft Certified System Administrator, Network+ certified, A+ certified, Security+ certified, and Cisco wireless certified. I run my own IT consulting business. I'm smart enough to use all apple (especially in the workplace) but fortunately the rest of the world isn't. I used to be an anti-apple MS fanboy too, but the more I learned about Microsoft vs UNIX, the more my Microsoft teachers convinced me that microsoft is ridiculous, and anything with a UNIX shell is much more reliable. So unless I'm playing games, my windows machine stays very quiet. It's all OS X and Ubuntu for productivity. But again, Microsoft is good for something: They keep me a steady paycheck, especially from IE7 ruining intranet access.
