- infinitespecter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2super_structure: "I'm sorry, but have you actually read the comments by most NORMAL digg users? "
Normal digg users and Normal people are entirely different. Normal people (those who buy iPods without looking at tech specs) don't post to sites like this. The PSP is, for all intents and purposes, a failure as a media player because of how difficult it is for a normal person to get the most out of. You can't just drop video onto it and you can't typically find preformatted video easily. You can drop audio onto it, but it is huge and unweildy. It is a game player trying to be a media player. The iPod is a music player that can do other things, but it focuses on music, and that is why it is successful. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2COMING SOON FROM RIVAL DRUG DEALERS NEAR YOU:
iCrack ---and--- X-Crack
iCrack is pretty (pure white), gives you a mellow, stable high and costs twice as much as normal Crack.
X-Crack is ugly (black and green), costs about as much (or more) than iCrack...and when you crash, you turn a nasty shade of blue with white dots.
:P - stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I'll buy one because its not from Apple"
That is just about the stupidest thing I've read all day. So even if it's a huge brick of an overly-complicated piece of electronics, you'll buy it? Nice one, that. Maybe that can be Microsoft's marketing campaign: "Microsoft's new media player. Hey, it's not Apple!". Good luck with that. - HairyBallz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Microsoft always find a way to take something simple and make it complicated
- Hattrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think it will be too little too late for Microsoft. They are way behind the curve on this one. They certainly won't gain any market share by re-creating an existing product/system like iPod/iTunes.
However...
If Microsoft developers are smart, they will blend the iPod's simplicity with the do-it-all capability of the PSP. Add in a better portable Windows version with a 3d engine, handheld form-factor, and wireless Internet and they might be on to something. - Raider007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2since it plays games, video and music...
shouldn't it really be a PSP rival not a ipod rival? - gaius_baltar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Steve Jobs actually knew about this:
Newsweek interview, two weeks ago:
The problem is, the PC model doesn’t work in the consumer electronics industry, where you’ve got all these companies and some does one thing and another does another thing. It just doesn’t work. What’s going to happen is that Microsoft is going to have to get into the hardware business of making MP3 players. This year. X-player, or whatever. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>"HAHAHAHA... GOOD ***** LUCK MICROSOFT."

>-Apple users to Microsoft, shortly before the release of Windows 95, August 1995
I see the point you're making but it's wrong. When you think about how Apple handled the Mac vs. how it's handling the iPod you can clearly see that they learned their lesson and aren't going to easily repeat it. With the Mac, they were incompatible with everyone else, barely advertised and had a snotty holier-than-thou attitude about things. The iPod isn't proprietary (i.e., can play a wide variety of music formats and can be used on Windows), they are advertising the hell out of it (do you need me to prove that one?), and they are being pretty down-to-earth about their success by partnering with tons of content-providers. They're not repeating the same mistakes that would leave them open to a Windows 95-type massacre. I would be very surprised at this point to see Microsoft overtake Apple on this one. WalMart couldn't beat them. Dell couldn't beat them. Creative couldn't do it. You think MS will really just breeze in and lay waste to Apple? Would you bet money on that? I wouldn't. - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok, am i the only one who sees a psp killer, and not an ipod killer? the ipod isn't a gaming platform and the psp sucks at media playback. assuming that m$ pulls it off the way they would need to to kill the ipod, m$ would have to develop a device with not only something truly better than an ipod (in quality, form, and functionality), have amazing abilities (7864 PB storage space, 873 QHz 8x16 parallel core processors, time travel, etc.) and offer more and better games and a better gaming experience than the psp. if they don't, then it's going to be something everyone will want for 2 seconds, then go buy an ipod instead cuz at least then they know what they're getting.
it's wise of microsoft to consider this move, but i think it would be a mistake to take on the psp AND the ipod at the same time. do one or the other... or be doomed to fail, no matter how brilliant they suddenly may become. - stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"and the PSP would kill the ipod if it had a 50GB+ hard drive inside"
You honestly think that? Come on now. The iPod is selling like hotcakes because it is 1) small, 2) EASY TO USE, and 3) EASY TO USE. The PSP isn't any of those. Adding more storage will do nothing to help the PSP. You need to take a step back and think like a normal person. - twizhimself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you know its going to be tick as crap and probably black and green and probably in the shape of an X and probably crash a lot
yay Microsoft - saysaknow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1X-Player? That sounds like *****.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2MS won't be able to bully their way to the front of the pack here as there is no way they can bundle this onto a Windows CD. That's the only way they have won before. Netscape etc. lost because MS make the tech part of Windows. When MS can't do that, they are visible for what they are: mediocre at best and generally unimaginative. So, who thinks they are being 'innovative' right now??
- blueice03, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And Microsoft will be dealing with the same thing every other iPod competitor has/had to deal with: Apple can deliver the whole package from the music store to the player. This has always been one of the iPod's greatest strengths. The reality is that eventually there will be some parity in this market segment and Apple will more realistically have a 50-60% market share instead of the upper-70's it has right now, that is just the way things go. On the other hand, Microsoft has had dominance in the OS segment for well over a decade now and only now are there anything near serious threats to that dominance, so perhaps the iPod will retain its dominance for many years yet.
- shockingbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think we can all agree to drop X from your product names and for god's sake.. drop the i.
- syuusuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1more garbage in the living room, great
- nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -10/+11OMG, a Mac fan telling someone else to drop the letter in front of a gadget's name, now I've heard everything! iTards.
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would love to see Microsoft's version of an iPod.
I would also see audio devices being made by companies specializing in audio (Denon, Onkyo, Marantz, etc) and less made by companies like Dell, HP, and Apple. - artman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft Marketing Session on new mp3 player:
"I GOT IT! We'll call it...................XBOB! - absurdist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I wonder if MS would learn from the mistakes Sony made when they entered the handheld gaming market."
Of course. That way they can make brand new mistakes all their own.
The only thing we learn from history is that we never learn anything from history. - beelz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why did it take so long?
- eggyacid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i will not buy one if microsoft pay me to have one....plus, you guys are 4 years too late
- crashoverride70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 This is a really good way to start out, I know many people who do not buy songs from iTunes, but this will definitely be a selling point for those that do. The feature I’m excited about will be the wifi connection, why, how many times have you wanted to copy songs from a friends iPod to yours? How cool would it be to be able to connect to their media player using wifi, enter a password they’ve chosen and download their songs right there. Now, I’m not saying this will be a feature that is supported, but come on, if I worked for Microsoft I would make sure it would be possible to do so. Come on Microsoft, make it happen!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This doesn't sound like an iPod killer (as if anything other than Apple screwing the pooch could kill the iPod). It sounds like a PSP killer...which shouldn't be hard because the PSP blows goats.
- xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And History Repeats itself Microsoft will once again make a sloppy version of something good and make money from poor users who know nothing about technology... sheesh!..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"OOH! It says that it adds gaming to the music and video thing, theres an idea that has serious potential!"
yeah, it's called a PSP. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1... and it will phail.
- Mesattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agree on the letter X. Give it a rest already!
- lunarship, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The old saying is that Microsoft never gets anything right until version 3. So that means still another Xbox to go then, for a start...
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sure that if Microsoft is actually planning a portable device, it won't be named anythink like "XPlayer". That is either a codename or just something a digg submitter made up. Microsoft has very expensive marketing people who are very good at telling what has been done to death. My question is what will make the MS player unique. Will it be game-centric, like the PSP? Will it be music/video-centric, like the iPod? Will it be another unimaginative combonation of both? Or does Microsoft have some genuinely unique idea up their sleeve? My humble guess is that if they indeed have a plans for an iPod competitor, then they are pretty confident that they have a darned good idea.
- amcluesent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple created the iPod when the company had nothing to lose. They put everything they had into it to give it a 'wow'. Now you can see accountants and marketing all over the iPod, trying to maximise margin and work out which demographic segment to target. MSFT will never create an iPod killer, they're not hungry enough.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Honestly, something ***** earthmoving would have to happen for MS to win significant marketshare. What the hell would cause all the people who have bought (and most likely have bought _recently_) an iPod and then suddenly replace that with an X-Player? Nothing.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0.. or go talk to the many computers who work hand in hand with microsoft.
- evilware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Knowing microsoft it will weigh about 3 pounds, have a 10 hour battery life, and crash a lot and have bsods.
- mobber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"you refering to my MS x-player? only 2 people have one. one of them is Bruce Willis...."
why bother?
how else will we get our dick tracy watches? our jetsons car/suitcase? our cyborg implants?
i know it may feel like we are "all up in the future", but technology has got to keep pushin... - dolby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it is a player but the the XTEME, LOL. The original name for the XBOX was the direc-x box they dropped the direct off and renamed it Xbox. What was the original name for this thing the direc - X player?
- Ajzzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft's hardware is really hit and miss(especially when they buy companies with good products and smack a label on), the only common factor it has with Apple's hardware is that it is always unreasonably priced(Xbox not included). It's going to have to have something with the same functionality of a click-wheel but it'll probably be easily breakable(just like their joysticks). iTunes is bloated, slow, and anoying on Windows, but that's Microsoft's design philosophy(Windows Media Player) so no change there. It's not going to support the formats I want, it's going to have more intrusive DRM, and it's probably going to be ugly(possibly black, with Apple for that crap you pay extra). Faceplates, it's obviously going to have faceplates, nearly as bad as limited edition versions with U2 engraved on them.
Their campaign could be "Hey, it could be worse... you could be using iTunes" - Xipher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh, it will be crap. Oh wait it's got teh X in it!!!!
Stupid ass MS.
Wasn't it Gates that said the iPod was just a trend? Now he's trying to get in the market himself. - ehmjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate to sound like a member of the Apple Army, but why bother. Unless they find someone who can design something thats slick, cool, and INVENTIVE, and couple it with a huge hard drive, an intuitive interface, something that doesn't have WINDOWS branded on it, then this is going to be just another music player. And knowing microsoft, it will be overpriced for what it does, and it wont do it very well.
oh well. I guess they might as well TRY. - sifelltneytandi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As a noted member of the "I couldn't care less" camp (in regards to Mac vs. Microsoft), I have to say that X has seen its day. The lower-case i, on the other hand, is still on the upswing.
- evilware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Knowing microsoft they will just take someone else design and then take there gui and then put them toghther and call it inovative and something new whip a 400 dollar price tag on it
- MikhoohkiM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1and the PSP would kill the ipod if it had a 50GB+ hard drive inside
- LeonThePro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Will this be different than the one they ALREADY designed with Creative in the Zen Portable Media Center?
http://portables.about.com/b/a/109805.htm - Korvaras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ick. Whatever. If everyone could just stop being haters, and start just using what they like, it would just be better for everyone.
- MikhoohkiM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wouldn't is be something if some how the MP3 market share switched around
80% Microsoft
15% Apple
5% other
and then the OS market share would also switch around
80% Apple
15% Microsoft
5% Other
Now that would be funny if all that happens in 2006, i would just ***** bricks
*and please don't bitch about the Numbers i used its showing who would be on top* - dharh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol a 50 gig hard drive. PSP would cost what then? 6-700 bucks? That is an ipod killer?
- wooties, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1at least they aren't calling it "iX-player"
i'm sooo sick of seeing that little "i" in front of every poserific hipster toy out there. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"One of the keys to the iPod is the easy to use interface.
We'll see if anyone is able to dupe that."
Ever used Media Center Edition?
Apple has alot to be worried about. -
