- Quactaur, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Wow there's a lot of hate here. Don't get so mad because you paid for your macs, you'll still be enjoying an experience above anyone else. When Apple moved to x86 they were opening themselves up to hacks, it was a risk they took; and obviously piracy is gonna settle in by those hacks. And in all honesty, if Apple do put more TPM in, and it actually effects the paying users (unlikely due to the reprisal) then you can always jump ship and hack the TPM out of the os - courtesy Maxxuss.
Seriously though, the more people using your OS, legitimately or not, the more people who will code apps for it. - RomeyRome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5""it's more like we'll blame him for the loss of performance hits we all suffer when apple starts checking the TPM at the top of each event loop of every application. Of course this will be encrypted, self-modifying code ala Windows Media Player to thwart hacking and increase overhead. THANKS A LOT *****! I'll not shed a tear if Maxxus sees an untimely demise.""
And it will get hacked out, & the honest ones will be stuck with the crippled legal version. That's what you get for being an honest do-gooder. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maxxuss rules. Keep up the fine work my friend.
- autobahn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LOL @ the mac fanboys who complain about OSX being cracked but will be the first ones in line to applaud when blu-ray or HD-DVD or HDCP is cracked.
Hypocrisy is hilarious! - Nygma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maxxuss should be hired by Apple, immediately.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple has nothing to worry about here. OS Xon generic hardware has way too many issues for this to ever hurt Apple's bottom line.
People are interested in hacked OSX because they want to try it out before buying a new Mac. Personally I am running a hacked OSX on my machine at home and I do legally own a copy of OSX for PPC so I don't feel I've done anything wrong. When Apple ships a Mini or iBook I will buy one because I've had a chance to try out OSX already. - Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Thanks, buddy. We'll blame you when OS X starts using a cumbersome activation scheme.
- andocom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You have got to be joking.
Do you bitch about the millions of pirated copies of windows, or do you bitch about MS putting in activation, honestly.
I'm sure the same people were all bitching about DVD Jon too huh, yeah sure. - capran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got 10.4.4 working on my shuttle over the weekend. But it's not really functional for me. The onboard ethernet (Marvell Yukon) doesn't work and neither did 3 PCI NICs either. I tried all the wikis, and editing Info.plists, but nothing worked. Same for my Geforce 6800GT. So until those things get working in osx86, it's not much good for me.
I just want a fast Mac, but can't afford one. I use a OC'd Mini for my main computer now, but would really like to have it on my shuttle. Maybe the new Mini tomorrow will be what I need, have to wait and see, but it'll probably just be a Core Solo, still have a weak GPU, and a notebook HD.
Now I love how small and cheap the Mini is, but couldn't they JUST have made it a little bigger to fit in a desktop size drive? And if I may go so far...a AGP or PCI-E slot for graphics? Sure you'd have to use low-profile cards, but at least it'd have the possibility of upgrade.
Oh well, I digress. - aaryn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5People who are saying "Get a Mac" are missing the point, because there is a difference in price between Apple hardware and regular hardware. People who say "Get a Mac" also don't see the need/benefit of dual booting Windows and Mac OS when there is indeed a need to do it.
Those of you who are upset because of Maxxuss work are simply ignorant of the reality of the internet. Software that can be broken will be broken. It doesn't matter who does it, someone will. Your ranting and bitching amounts to nothing if you just step back and look at the big picture.
So STFU please and thanks - rawillkill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1His new website is: http://www.maxxuss.com The link above is no longer functional.
- barretj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@barthosch
you can enter whatever address/personal info you want when you register a domain, most registrars do not check the validity of the info, so he probably just thought it would be funny to put apple's address in there - panique, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7@slipdisc - very funny. Wonder how long it is before Apple goes "oh, that's our domain, give us control of it"
@balanced - it's more like we'll blame him for the loss of performance hits we all suffer when apple starts checking the TPM at the top of each event loop of every application. Of course this will be encrypted, self-modifying code ala Windows Media Player to thwart hacking and increase overhead. THANKS A LOT *****! I'll not shed a tear if Maxxus sees an untimely demise. - a8ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The above link is a blog. His patches are here: http://www.maxxuss.org/
- tricheco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3He risks his own life to get nobody to REALLY use OSX on x86... Too difficult and redundant to keep two (pirate) installations of OSX on an ordinary PC. No important data can be kept on such a system. Even if you have a SSE2 capable one to waste...
Buy a Mac, make Steve happier, I bet you can afford one. - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>now, yes, you can install a patched copy of 10.4.4, but you can't partition and format your hdd with it
I had no problems partitioning and formatting the HD with the bootable 10.4.4 dvd - on a dell. it runs faster than my g5 imac too, much faster. But I can't compare it to a mac-duo yet. - ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple should hire him...
- jamac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm guessing that there's more people running pirated copies of Windows than there are all Mac users. Its simply a matter of time before half of those so-called Windows users will switch to running OSX full time. Think driver support is going to be a problem? The linux kernel offers thousands of solutions.
By the end of this year the Mac user base is going to increase, but not because of Apple sales. Welcome to the level playing field. - _skin_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple should just hire this guy... That way we won't have to loose anything.
- barthosch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is creepy. His domain is owned by Apple? Does maxxuss work at Apple? On http://reports.internic.net/cgi/whois?whois_nic=konglish.org&type=domain it says "Last Updated On:19-Feb-2006 02:58:16 UTC". Did they recently buy it from maxxuss? :- Now I'm confused!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It seems like the OSX86 community as a whole puts a lot of faith into Maxxuss. His demise would be a huge loss.
Don't think for a second, that Apple will not go to great lengths to prevent its OS to be run on a beige box. http://www.whois.net/whois.cgi2?d=konglish.org His site belongs to Apple. Pwned!
Don't steal kids. - NetSliderX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well now here is my question ... what if you already own a Mac? Wait! Not A mac... two of em? I have an iMac Core Duo 20'' with 2GB ram and a Mac Mini 1.42 GHZ PPC G4 with 512 MB Ram. I had an archaic HP Pavillion 533w just sitting in my garage collecting dust but before I finally decided to throw it out, I thought I might try this to see if it works and if so, how well.
I am very happy to report that 10.4.3 runs rather decently (almost on par with the Mac Mini!!) and I've decided to give this rig to my four year old daughter who loves to use the mini to play her learning games.
Honestly, is this wrong? I don't see why. I'm not really trying to get over on Apple or Stevie .. I just did it.. to see if I could :)
P.S>> I will NOT be attempting the ludicriously difficult updates to 10.4.5 for the mere fact that it's truly not needed and I feel I've already met my goal. Time to move on!
Cheers - whoutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love macs too! But paying $3000 for a machine is price fixing!
I don't want to hinder apple, but there are some cheep powerbook
looking notebooks out there, that i could throw os x on there and
be very happy! - archer75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You can install a patched copy of 10.4.4 on your PC natively. These copies are out there. No need for a 10.4.3 install.
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Wow..and it still requires you to have 10.4.3...How redundant, you need 2 copies of OSX installed on your computer.
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well done to Maxxuss, I look forward to upgrading my PC from 10.4.3
- barnkim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Doesn't maxxus have his own site? Why did he start this blog?
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Ok, for a n00b, what exactly do you patch with these patches?
- Yanks2435, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Caldaean: Not really. 10.4.5 has been out for a week give or take a few days and he already got it. So when they release an entirely new version it shouldn't take him long, especially since he seems to know what he is doing.
- barthosch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1maybe apple hacked into the whois-entry? ;)
- gnob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hiring a hacker who doesn't care about the law just encourages more people to do the same thing. Apple hiring him would be stupid.
Microsoft should hire him. - zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But hasn't Apple already released early builds of 10.4.6 to developers?
- gnob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why would Apple want to hire him?
He's breaking the law now, why wouldn't he break it as an employee? I wouldn't trust him to work for me. - etx313, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hah, Look at all the butthurt fanboys.
- aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Osx86 is a hassle for the Apple OS securitywriters, a hassle for Maxxuss, a hassle for the people wanting to run it on their PCs, and ultimately a hassle for ordinary Mac users (activation? TMP chips?)
Jobs should get the message and just sell the bloody thing. Better for everyone concerned. - neofactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The reason the whois shows Apple's address is.. can you guess? No? Because he is messing with them! False INC info is a violation but I do not think he really gives a crap... do you?
- shazeubaa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well said quactaur. (sincerely)
When ya gittin' yer mac? ;) :) - BRODEL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The only reason I don't have OSX is because it's not practical (as of yet) to install it on a normal PC. I have played with it a bit and I think the OS is pretty cool. I'd love to be able to use it for daily use. I would never buy a mac to get it though. It's not worth it. I like the openness of PCs too damn much to give that up. I use linux, but I might switch to OSX if it was a supported install on PCs by apple.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I have right here in my very hands a DVD that contains OSX 10.4.5 and it boots flawlessly with all features supported... on my Intel iMac.
- thecontinental, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Thanks, buddy. We'll blame you when OS X starts using a cumbersome activation scheme
Exactly - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0w00t
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1seriously, stop it with the "stfu" crap. don't be a troll. that's lame.
now, yes, you can install a patched copy of 10.4.4, but you can't partition and format your hdd with it. so, there is a need for 10.4.1 or 10.4.3; or you could use *nix to partition and format the hdd. good luck with that. ;)
by the way, maxxuss did have a web site, but it was taken down. now, he has a blog; and i hate him. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It cracks me up how many Mac users are angered by this. "We paid the Apple tax, why shouldn't you?!" Well personally I don't see this *ever* hitting the mainstream, or being super easy to handle, so Apple isn't very worried about it. All their well-trained customers dutifully buy a new Apple every X years with the latest and greatest MacOS on it and that's all Apple cares about.
Think about it this way. The vast majority of computer owners have PCs. A small percentage run a pirated version of windows. A smaller percentage installs Linux over the top of Windows. An even smaller percentage would be willing to jump through all these hoops to get OSX working on their PCs. That probably amounts to what, 2,000 users tops? What Apple should really be worried about is people installing XP or Vista on their hardware. If people buy Apple hardware but don't run Apple software, that's bad for their third party software developers (all 10 of them). - chriszma666, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@zetsurin, why don't you get a life and get laid. Quit wasting your time insulting people.
- andrewmp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Hacked OS X is great IMHO, but I can't find Ethernet drivers for it :'(
- thyratron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0And for our next hack, we'll be giving the Dell Dude a sex change to make ya a girlfriend!
- kingamoon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@zetsurin: you're an idiot :)
- CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0ROFL And andrewmp goes and makes the oppositions point for them.
- caldaean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This whole issue will never be a problem, as long as they keep releasing updates and/or new versions of their OS. The last 2 weeks the guy has had to rewrite his patches twice, first for 10.4.4, then for 10.4.5. In less than a year we will see 10.5, and everything will start over from scratch again. Many of the problems that exist for Microsoft is that they release new versions every 6 or 7 years, which are updatable through their own update service. So, everybody has lots of time to crack their system, something that doesn't exist with OSX. So, even though people can build custom OSX systems, most won't bother because it will be to much a hazzle trying to keep it running and updated.
- wewa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Who R U guys writing all this 4?
...cept urselves...
