- Tweekster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And this is why schools should have drastically reduced tech budgets.
the principal, the schoolboard the IT staff and anyone involved with this sale should be fired.
What a tremedous waste of resources and money to sell of perfectly good systems for pennies and im sure they are complaining about not enough money in their budget. - Goose241, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I only have one word for that school system "EBAY".
- PrometheuZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3People that desperate for a computer by trampling all over each other is a joke. I'd sooner trample over someone for a good Belgian beer.
- liquidice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i like the lady that said she kicked people in the balls.

"people of color as "cockroaches""
"The poor don't need computers. They should stick to things they can understand, like their menial job and breeding like cockroaches..."
He didn't refer to people of color as cockroaches, YOU just did though. It seems as though you just assumed that because he said poor he meant people of color. So infact YOU are the one stating that people of color are poor, work menial jobs and breed like cockroaches. YOU just made that assumption. So how are you calling other people racist?
I'm not trying to be rude, but don't talk down to other people when you are making these kinds of assumptions. - Ringmaster69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1did anyone else notice on the Video Report (4pm News) (2:45)they interview MICHAEL JACKSON! (ok not the wierd one but still)
- da_bradler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this all could have been avoided if they would have just had an IQ test at the door and if you didn't score... oh say a 50 you couldn't get an iBook, I bet they would have plently left over if that's what they did:)
- noclip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Look, Cletus! That educatin' place is selling them typing boxes, for fitty bucks! I bet it has that internet thing we keep hearin' about too!"
- djork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Indeed, PrometheuZ. Perhaps if they were selling $50 cases of Westvleteran 12, I'd be stampeding!
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Holy crap Lois, they're selling iBooks for fifty bucks!" "What's an iBook?" "I don't know, but I know that the only sure way to get one is to trick everyone into thinking they're selling cocaine." - Can't wait for that episode to come out.
- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ Curt, I really don't think this is so complicated as you tend to lead on.
Yes there are some rude and absurd comments, but did you even watch the video. It's the typical mob mentality and they could have simply choose to not follow and run, but their greed got the best of them and that's what I was making fun of, and others as well. So let's not act as if were holier then thou, please understand their are ignorant and racist people out there, and nothing will ever change it.
The money these people could have made working would have paid for a new computer, but instead they wait outside all night and day, to get an old, used computer. That's funny no matter how you look at it, even if the people don't have a computer and need one, what type of example are they setting by handing out things basically for free. That only stregthens the societal downfall, by thinking you can only afford something when it's on sale. Why not work for something that you'd be proud to say to bought. Instead of some hand me down that doesn't work. If anyhting it sounds like they took advantage of the people, and sold they junk. - Lushy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8327177210
- Fafhrd68, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was going to go an get my Ibook. I live in Henrico County. But then I heard as of 1am that a line had started to form. I thought to myself , this is crazy, no way am I going to stand in line for 9 hours to get a laptop that I know for a fact was beaten and abused by a snot nose kid. How do I know this, I work as a teacher in the system. I have seen them dumped, thrown and smashed over the five years this program has been running.
Then I decided to stay home. I called my friend told him I wasn't going and he agreed that 1am was way to early.
All I can say is that Henrico County and Richmond VA are not indicative of the craziness. We are a conservative town with hopes of being a artsy place. What i found really stirred the pot was all the outside interference of people offering extra money to people who would pick them up a laptop. I have seen EBAY listing of $200+ offering to get a hold of one of these G3 Ibooks. While sometimes I praise the interconnecting of the internet, I sometimes am ashamed of the unabashed ruthlessness of it at times.
Aside from blaming the police, HCPS or even your mom, we all really know what spurned this incident, Greed. I have been posting since the beginning of this that these Ibooks were probably damaged. I was offered $200 to get one for someone in NY. This is what spurned problem. Not the police patrolling the area, because then we would have complained that the police were unduly cracking down on us. Not HCPS, because they never thought to believed that this many people would want trashed ibooks. The blame falls fully on those that blew this story out of control, pure and simply for greed of wanting something. - curt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I hope Kevin Rose (and the overall Digg community) pays attention to the following comments and that he soon implements a way to ban or report abusive user comments. I usually refrain from chastising the Digg community for ignorant or immature statements, but in this case I'll make an exception. This is especially significant if this story is indeed reported on Diggnation or any of the other highly respected tech shows that Digg users tune into. Also, keep in mind that I realize it can difficult to monitor or edit a site like this, especially since it is still in it's infancy, but sometimes enough is enough.
I fully support our first ammendment right to free speech, but today I have to say that I am ashamed of some of the opinions that I have read here today- that applies to both the adult and juvenile members of Digg. The comments that have made fun of poor people and people of color as "cockroaches", "a bunch of negroes and mexicans", etc... have been extremely disappointing, shocking, and hurtful to say the least.
Cases in point:
"You see, apple computers are so rediculous expensive, fat black ladies and their babies are being crushed. I've never seen so many fat people running at once. Let the family guy jokes roll.
The female reporter's name was 'Tarhonda.' She opened her mouth and I was expecting ebonics"
"The poor don't need computers. They should stick to things they can understand, like their menial job and breeding like cockroaches..."
There are many other comments that I could also list but I'm sure you understand my point. I realize that for many readers, these may appear to be harmless jokes to merely be taken with a grain of salt. But for some of us- who are probably in the extreme minority on a site like this- comments and attitudes like these may cause us to momentarily or even permanently regret our decision to join the tech community in the first place.
Of course, this isn't the first time I've seen this type of behavior on a web site or in my professional, academic, or personal life, but I guess I thought Digg was different. Digg appeared to be more egalitarian and democratic than most other web sites, and for me has been a needed source of inspiration for various projects that interest me. In fact, Digg has probably been one of the most interesting and innovative new site to come online in the past few years of internet monotony and stagnation. That is all the more reason why I had to speak up.
Finally, for some people, a $50 dollar laptop- even if damaged, slow, or outdated- can make a crucial difference in one's life whether it be as a tool for helping kids with homework or just learning basic computing skills like surfing the web, checking email, or word processing. Need, not greed was probably the motivating factor for many of these who probably couldn't afford a $200 used iBook, let alone anything actually modern. In this light, I am sure no one expected to trample anyone or to be trampled this morning and the overall situation should have been organized and handled much more effectively.
In my own life, I felt LUCKY several years ago (1998 or so) to be able to teach myself HTML, Javascript, and other web technologies on a used and outdated BLACK AND WHITE PowerBook with 8-16mbs of ram while my so-called peers had much more modern equipment. Unfortunately, that was all I had access to and I made the best out of it and I was HAPPY to have it. While learning network administration and how to build and repair pc's with hand-me-down parts, I gradually increased my skills and was able to secure employment in Information Technology. I have since worked in IT on various projects and capacities ranging from help desk support, web development, project management, business development, and other executive-level positions. I, like so many other people, had to start somewhere and with alot of hard work and effort I was able to succeed.
However, it's sad that some Digg members can't relate or even expand their minds to imagine what it feels like to be poor and disrespected... - blhack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually this was a huge profit for the school. Apple donated the notebooks to them as a promotion. The reason that that they dumped the ibooks is that their IT staff is trained in windows, there were CONSTANT calls with people trying to install stupid slidshow apps, screensavers, and weatherbug bullshiat. Eventually the IT staff just gave up and advised the administration to sell them.
- jediboytj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1haha... i betcha 90% of those computers dont even turn on anymore... At lot of people are wasting their time thinking they are getting someone good for $50, when in reality, all they are getting is a somewhat off-white, yellowish computer (that used to be white), thats been dropped, used as an umbrella, thrown around, beat up, and otherwise mishandled by idiotic teens. but hey, its only $50... and the computer USED to be worth $1000, so it must be a deal!
- version30.x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Earlier I posted that this was a totally despicable situation... although that's seriously true, I now I'm laughing my ass off at the people icing their nuts for the next 48hrs.
Hope that old man with the walker is Ok. - adamS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Along the same lines as the support line they've opened up, they labelled them "I-Books" on NBC-12. Nice!
- salome191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is INSANE
- fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the future of reality television. Give us $50 iBook sales on primetime TV and watch the carnage - better than anything WWF ever gave us...
- Lushy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just check out the e-bay shirt about this:

and the "kicking them in the balls" video
http://www.nbc12.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Common%2FLib%2FVideoFrame&cid=1031784465717&siteid=WWBT - the_mole1314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's my final quote if anyone wants to use it for anything...
As a former resident of Henrico County, this is no surprise. The utter stupidity of this county is beyond comprehension, from neglecting schools that are falling appart to build a new multi-million dollar school for the rich and then buying millions of dollars worth of iBooks. It shouldn't be a surprise that this county dropped the ball, I mean, they DID drop Apple and go to Dell. - mattza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the world has always been a jungle, it just takes the proper conditions to elicit the beast from us.
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If this thing doesn't go to diggnation I don't know what else could, this has been so freaking hilarious , hours later I'm still laughing, thanks to the guys for the funny comments, you really make digg a rocking community.
- DiggPolice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hilarious, yet sad.
- PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For the last time, people, it's not "rediculous". It's "ridiculous", as in deserving of ridicule. If you'd spend more $$$ on education rather than expensive toys, you might know that. The fact that I'm correcting you about this particular word is sadly ironic.
- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^they = them
- ShadySpace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh my god, I don't know whether to laugh my ass off or cry my eyes out due to this story.
- linuxathome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The school system should have contacted GSA (http://gsaauctions.gov) in terms of logistics. Being a government agency, the GSA probably would have been happy to help them out (perhaps at a cost, but I couldn't imagine it costing them much), they do it on a daily basis.
- CRWheeler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All i can say is this
http://ibookmadness.ytmnd.com/ - xerves, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, lighten up some. People will be ***** in particular when they cannot be held accountable for it! Anyway, if you are interested check out www.wehatetech.com. We are in the podcasting business too and we discuss how we hate all technology, and in particular anything sony related *cackle*. Enjoy.
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@curt,
I support the idea of a report user feature, I've been bullied by some "smart asses" here on digg and think is time to stop them cold, from the bozo that points out a misspell to the one that only wants to cause troubles.
Now on the fact of racism, is a tough point, we are in the 21st century and still believe that the white Caucasian is the pure race, sounds familiar, add to the mix the hypocrite white christian and you'll have a topic to talk about for year without a solution in sight. - SGT.SHIZZO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm just suprised that:
1) Nobody was mugged or beaten to death after purchasing an iBook.
2) There were no drive-by shootings as a "grand finale".
Anybody who thinks that Henrico and Richmond are "Happy Places" should watch WWBT 12 News once in a while. It will definitely put things in perspective. EVOLUTION STOPS HERE! - steamynachos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ghetto-fabulous

- SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the whole "open the gates" thing was stupid. They should of hade a first come first serve at the door.
- cuoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's funny is they have a phone number for the people who bought them and can't get them to work. Would love to here some of those calls.
- adamS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1""for everyone who wouldn't fight for one: you are not poor, so lay off."
The poor don't need computers. They should stick to things they can understand, like their menial job and breeding like cockroaches."
Hahaha - EAMUS1CATULI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Those ghetto ass mother *****, most of those people arent going to use, or know how to use the i-book. They are going to sell the computers for some crack.
- mcewen98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I looked on ebay for "henrico ibook" but all I found was this:

And the people rushing and stepping over each other just to get a computer, a COMPUTER, are bastards. This is disgusting.

( Jesse Sandler said he was one of the people pushing forward, using a folding chair he had brought with him to beat back people who tried to cut in front of him.
"I took my chair here and I threw it over my shoulder and I went, 'Bam,"' the 20-year-old said nonchalantly, his eyes glued to the screen of his new iBook, as he tapped away on the keyboard at a testing station.
"They were getting in front of me and I was there a lot earlier than them, so I thought that it was just," he said. ) - maxmojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The real moron were the ones selling the pc's.
1. Set up a registration site where you register for a chance to buy an ibook for $50.00 Using a Credit Card that verified residency, and paid a $5.00 refundable deposit.
2. Have a lottery, and email the 1,000 lucky recipients along with a verification code, and instructions as to when and where to claim their ibook.
3. The purchasers come pick up the ibooks.
Voila. It would have been a really simple site to setup and run. - fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Weren't these iBooks really old like 500mhz G3 machines? - PASS -
- Nosaj_Yesnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, I wish I knew about this sooner. I live right outside Va. beach, which is about 2 hrs. away. Christ, I'm mad now. $50! Even if they were used. Damn them.
