- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I fail to see the part that says, and please post your opinion on macs, especially if you hate them...
One thing I have noticed about being a mac fan. There are SOME people who feel the need to broadcast their discontent with macs. Guess what? We have heard it. Unless this is a debate about what is best, please save it cause you aren't going to convince anyone macs suck by just stating that...
Ya it probably goes hand in hand where there are Linux and mac lovers who have to express their discontent with windows, but seriously people need to learn when to shutup and when to express their opinion. This article was not one of those times. - zwitl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I dont understand these guys: they get the most limited and less upgradable of all macs (wich are known for ages to have a limited upgrade path, with various models with soldered cpus and complex to open cases). And yet, they go to extreme means to do things a slightly superior model can do out of the box. In this case, it's completely stupid: do dual display with only one VGA output and find an expensive way to split the signal over two screens, but then
- Since the OS thinks its driving one move monitor, every popup and windows appeir in the middle of both screens.
- Signal sync is hard to acheive and produce blur, a problem you can't have with DVI.
- Need a third party app to set the proper resolution.
- Add a lot of clutters on the desk, while having a iMac integrated into the screen driving a second monitor is a so easy and clean.
At the end, you lose the point of having a mini (small and simple) and get that ugly setup:
a white mac mini, a black microsoft mouse, two ugly grey 17''lcd, a black microsoft mouse and a beige keyboard.
Next: add an external videocard because the mini is unable to handle that resolution? - Biomechanical, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Regardless of the fact that the person is using VGA as opposed to DVI, or that they're using an external Matrox adaptor instead of some sort of physical hack to his Mini, I think it's a neat solution to this person's problem of obtaining dual-head on a system that doesn't natively support it. At least this is a solution that non-technical people can use without fear of ruining their recently bought machines.
Off-topic, remote access through SSH does not protect you from trojans if you install the trojan - i.e. for those that don't know, a program that you thought did one thing, but secretly does another more evil task - and the same goes for viruses, spyware, and any other nasty software that you may accidentally, or purposefully, install while thinking it's useful for some other purpose, and although there isn't anything that I am aware of yet, this doesn't exclude Mac users simply because you're running a Mac.
I'm using Linux, but I could still get a nasty trojan or virus if some ***** gives me one inside a piece of software I thought was completely innocuous. It is the nature of computers, and is as simple as running a script or batch file that erases your personal data - if it fails to obtain high enough access to completely ruin the whole contents of your hard drive. - migel628, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll digg it, b/c I just bought a mini...Too bad it's not DVI though.
- bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The keyboard is actually an Apple Extended ADB keyboard, the Mac equivalent (perhaps) of the Model M and highly regarded as one of the best keyboards ever.
- caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll digg...hadn't seen this before and I don't care that jahue has.
- jairhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the mac mini has so-so VGA out... If you care at all about the quality of the display, you need DVI only. I love my mac mini, but I live with it only having one display.
- officialchicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its confirmed... matrox DualHead2Go compatible with mac mini.
- number8888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I first read the headline I thought that some one made a hack or something. Turns out that it only use that matrox splitter thing. Hardly worthwhile news.
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh sweet! I'd guess the grpahics chip/VRAM takes a bit of a hammering running 2 17" LCDs on that. I don't think the Mac mini was really designed to handle 2048x1024 graphics areas running Core Image acceleration.
- ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why no DVI support?
- supersteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool, great solution if you need dual display on a mac mini
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh and for what it's worth I don't think the line chopping technique they use to split the screen in half on the box would work on a DVI digital output - looking at the technique they use it looks like the clock in the DualHead2Go splits the signal using a halving clock onthe scanline refresh rate so that it flips from on display to the other and back on every line. A *different* system for DVI, based on some sort of digital splitting and remapping, wouldn't be so hard to do, but the majority of people wanting dual display on the cheap only have VGA screens anyway (be they CRT or TFT).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yet another product who's manufacturers couldn't be bothered to check if it worked with anything other than ***** even though there's nothing stopping it working with Mac.
- sLydE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So I have a dual monitor setup on a single video card on my work computer, could I use two of those dealies to make a quad monitor setup?
- Double-Z, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Calm down people.
- paulchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is so lame... this product has been out for a while now already but gets diggs because it works for mac?
lame - blakespot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0How about, first, a Mac Mini that doesn't have a BROKEN single display? The voltage levels on the analog VGA video out on the mini are below VESA standards and, as such, produce a dim display on CRTs. Digital displays connected straight to DVI are not affected. This has been a pain for me since I got my mini on the day of release, early last year.

-sibertank
yeah look at the keyboard too ;) - jonohull, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Hey techchef, quit spamming your posts.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0No digg. It seems like if you want any regular technology that's on a PC, inside a mac, you have to go out and find products buried deep within the net and then pay out an arm and a leg for them.
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0The title makes it sound as if the Mini has some role to play int he dual screen goodness of another company's product. Lame.
And it smells ever so spammy. - maniaci137, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0"Sticks and stones may break my bones but trojans, spyware and viruses will never hurt me... :)"
+Digg just for that.
PS.I use XP. :) - Sibertank, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Almost ever comment here is like a slap down lol,
In the picture he is using a microsoft mouse on his mini mac lol. - Sturmur, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1lol.
- Jerk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1@sodaman3000
If you're so grown up, stop acting like a child. - johnnybluejeans, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0sodaman: How does only running SSH protect you from a trojan?
Learn something about what you are talking about before you open your ignorant mouth. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Ok sodaman3000 (your name sounds pretty childish to me)
- japlan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Because .... I thought it was a cool story and didn't know if the site could handle digg traffic. Call me what you like dumbass.
- jahue, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1This is old news! i looked at this about 8-months ago still cool. No digg No dvi ,VGA is so out of fashion

I dont even need to mention macosx
