- happyseamonster, on 12/20/2007, -2/+65I'll believe it when I feel it.
- Wailord, on 12/20/2007, -7/+52Dugg for the thumbnail.
All hail Jesus Jobs. - wibambau, on 12/20/2007, -0/+19Well soon you'll be able to put the fact you have previous experience with a touchscreen on your next fast-food job application.
- maiku00, on 12/20/2007, -4/+17oh thats just what I need, a pc monitor full of smudge marks
- Helfax, on 12/20/2007, -5/+17Does everyone like the idea of fingerprints and smudges on their desktop display? I understand it from a portable device standpoint but the concept loses it's appeal on the desktop.
- CheeseburgerBro, on 12/20/2007, -1/+12One thing to consider: if this IS true, and Touch technology is coming to the Mac, can you IMAGINE the obscene things Justin Long is going to have to do with John Hodgman in order to metaphorically hype this feature? It threatens to become very homoerotic very quickly.
"I'm a Mac."
"And I'm a PC."
"Here, watch me touch myself." - node3, on 12/20/2007, -3/+13If *only* there was a way people without a Mac could acquire one. But, alas, we're all stuck with whatever computer we were assigned at birth for the duration of our lives.
- Ireland, on 12/20/2007, -0/+10If Steve demoed a touch screen iMac I'd want to punch him very hard. This touch is for a touch-screen tablet, multi-touch Mac and all that. "Mac touch" it "will" be called. You know, "iPod touch" - "Mac touch". About 11", very thin and sexy, where do I sign? Where TF do I sign?!!! ;)
- jsg7, on 12/20/2007, -0/+8I'd LOVE a Mac Tablet, but I agree, I'm not getting my hopes up until I hear Jobs say it officially...
- jtbandes, on 12/20/2007, -3/+10The iPhone's screen is so bright you don't notice them. And I'm sure it would ship with a screen-sized microfiber cloth.
- iggy2012, on 12/20/2007, -4/+10Apple iMac touch? Just like this?

Now that's cool. - antitab, on 12/20/2007, -4/+9"It's a quick mod to get a Linux box running like Mac OS X"
Looking like != running like. Linux has a long, long way to go before it runs like OS X. - Ireland, on 12/20/2007, -1/+6All iPhone owners do, especially when you consider no smudges are not visible when the screen is on - which is all that really matters when it comes to smudges. Smudges on my very slim, sexy and easy to use 11" Multi-Touch, Mac touch tablet, woot! - I'm bringing the peanut butter!
- Ireland, on 12/20/2007, -1/+6No, touch desktops are stupa, this will be a very slim and sexy tablet.
- voodoozombie, on 12/20/2007, -2/+6So maybe they could add this to laptops. Maybe they could add handwriting recognition. Maybe they could have a swivel screen. Maybe we could call them tablets. Cause I know if I had to touch my LCD it would fall over. Maybe we could add 20 pounds to our LCD until they are the size of our old CRTs. That would be cool. Maybe the engineers are planning on bolting the monitors to our desks? Maybe they should do it on a table. Oh, wait, that’s already been done. Maybe that could put it on a table but make it sleek and colorful like a big freaken translucent blue dildo. Yeah, that’ll work. Maybe all they need to do is add a Mac logo to an actual big freaken translucent blue dildo. Yeah, that’ll work.
- digitalpencil, on 12/20/2007, -4/+8w00t! i know 9to5 are pretty up-to-date but surely they have enough time to run spell-check before they go live.. it's spelled 'personnel '
- Ireland, on 12/20/2007, -0/+4No.. Mac touch, not Vista touch? Think next time.
- node3, on 12/20/2007, -3/+7Oh my... you're right! It's a good thing you realized this while there's still time to let Apple know this so they can cancel the touch Mac. I mean, you'd *think* this would have come up during testing and they'd use some sort of glass-like, easily-cleaned, smudge-resistant surface, or something.
But I think you're right, they *definitely* wouldn't have thought of that. While the touch Mac is probably a ways off yet, it's probably best to call the touch Mac team before mid-January and let them know, just in case. - ricksite, on 12/20/2007, -2/+6Is this evidence that a multi-touch Mac won't be available at MacWorld? If they are hiring people to work on it, it doesn't seem likely that it will be ready in the next couple of months. If anything I would think late '08.
- furo, on 12/20/2007, -1/+4In most cases, I would be in total agreement. I am not on the touch interface bandwagon at all, and I think tablets and pen computing have been floundering since the mid-90s for a valid reason - the interface is still too cumbersome, inaccurate and in general a pain in the keester. That said, I do own an iPod touch and I expected the same experiences going in. I was wrong. While it isn't perfect, most of what I find irritating is largely a matter of the size of on-screen elements. The zoom-in/out function is amazingly well designed, as is the navigation of the content, be it lists, images or web browser windows. Translate this to a more full-sized representation that still maintains a keyboard and mouse capability and I'm definitely interested. If only I could get this complete experience outside of Apple's little world also... I'd love this on my phone, but there is no way I'm moving to an iPhone that is tied to AT&T and lacks robust corporate integration out of the box.
- bj1989, on 12/20/2007, -1/+4You suggest linux is not running as good/smooth/easy as OS X, remember: Different != Worse.
- louiemantia, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2Except your arms would get tired.
- node3, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2I suspect your first reason isn't as true as you think it is.
- furo, on 12/20/2007, -1/+3So you have both? Somehow, I doubt that. I assure you that this does not do the "exact same thing" as the iPhone/iPod Touch interface. It's a slap-on bit of software and is not able to be used as the primary input method in any convenient manner.
- RockinRoel, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2There's only one problem: you have to be a reliability engineer. Study fast.
- gllopc, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2That's a cute idea. I'm one of few people, if not the only one, that doesn't fully care for the DS; so your idea also sounds, just like the DS, like more promise than delivery. I wouldn't mind seeing it, though!
- Devo420, on 12/20/2007, -2/+4My MacBook, is where id like you to touch.
- inactive, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2One of the software products I work on is a touch screen pos. In that application it works great. Much faster than grabbing for the mouse or keyboard every time you need to press a button. But in a desktop or notebook computer situation??? I'm not seeing it. I think Microsoft has it right for a consumer level product with the Surface. Ive also had access to tablets in the past, and its not any problem with poor software or sensitivity or anything like that... It is just not a good way to interact with the computer on some primal level. Just having the mouse right next to the keyboard works so well from an ergonomic perspective.
I think what HP was attempting with that computer was experimental. The probably studied lots of their customers and found the their users had lots of computers in the kitchen, and were trying to design a recipe monitor or something like that... They get kudos from me for trying something new, even if it didn't work out in the end. - BrandonMills, on 12/20/2007, -2/+4He needs something to differentiate Macs from Linux. It's a quick mod to get a Linux box running like Mac OS X, and once linux distros figure out to ship like that as default, it'll be a tough sell to get people to buy Macs for double the price of PC hardware with Linux installed.
Of course, these are Linux guys. Ubuntu wants to sell you a brown desktop, after all. RHEL 5 ships with a nice, bright red wallpaper. Apple design crew, these guys are not. - SydeffeX, on 12/20/2007, -1/+2I hope it's like a Mac-DS. one for input, one for output.
- ZenMojo, on 12/20/2007, -2/+3Considering it's already been made by another company and is currently for sale, then yes, I think it's a plausible concept.
- clari0n, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Just because Linux is easy for you doesn't make it easy for the average user. While I'm not a computer genius, I've been using PCs since DOS, through various versions of Windows up to and including Vista. I would say that I'm at least slightly above the average user, though I'm not trying to toot my own horn, just giving you a point of reference. I've tried to set up a number of Linux distributions over the past few years, none successfully (though Ubuntu came close). Even when I've managed to get a system up and running in some form, I find myself too unfamiliar with how to get anything done for it to be useful to me.
Recently, though, I've purchased an iMac, and no more than an hour after removing it from the box did I have it set up and running with all my files transferred from my old PC. By the end of the day I was quite familiar and pleased with the first-party software, which suited most of my daily needs. For the few things that the Mac could not do out of the box (many fewer than any Linux distro I tried), I easily found an installed third-party software (open source and free as well, so no need to bring up that talking point).
I'm not trying to bad-mouth Linux. However, while it may be as good, and it may even be as smooth (if you are able to set it up correctly), it is not as easy as OS X. You're right, though: different != worse, but it doesn't mean it's better, either. It's all subjective. - BlackStrain, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Cut me som' slac' jak! Chump don' wan' no help, chump don' git no help. Jive ass dude don' got no brains anyhow.
- snyff, on 12/20/2007, -2/+3No, "jibes" is correct: http://www.answers.com/jibes&r=67 (definition 2)
Don't you have a browser with a Google search box? (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/) - clari0n, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1I've played with one of these computers in Best Buy. The touch screen works throughout Windows, not just in "HP's interface add-ons." No, I suppose it doesn't have multitouch, but I think it's a pretty interesting idea. It serves some specialty purposes, such as being able to look up recipes in the kitchen, as B1663r said. From what I could tell in the store, the focus seems to be on the media center aspect, so I would suspect that it would be an interesting addition to an entertainment center, like a touch-screen jukebox for the home.
As for innovation, yes, I actually do think it's innovative. Saying that touch screens have been around for years, so using one isn't innovative is like saying that computers in general have been around for years, and so any new computer to come out can't be innovative. It's in the implementation that makes it innovative. - antitab, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1"You suggest linux is not running as good/smooth/easy as OS X"
Quartz vs. Xorg. Similar apparent results, vasty inferior internals. - airj1012, on 12/20/2007, -1/+2Really??? I link to such an amazing story? It consists of 3 worthless paragraphs, if you count those as paragraphs. There is no substance to this article.
- furo, on 12/20/2007, -2/+3*Ahem*
Jibe –verb (used without object), jibed, jib·ing. to be in harmony or accord; agree: The report does not quite jibe with the commissioner's observations. - inactive, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Er, obviously I have a good reason for it. >_>
My school's network only works with PCs. besides, I can't afford a mac, and certainly not a shiny new touchable one. - colincornaby, on 12/20/2007, -1/+2Yeah, and the HP isn't multi touch. Notice the multi part? Multiple points of contact at once.
- yacks, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1it'll be nice to surf the webs though using a touchscreen.. if you didnt need a stylus and it picked up your touch properly..
- nunofgs, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Goddamnit, now the song is stuck in my head. THX
- clari0n, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Precisely. And if you can't touch it in more than one place, it's completely useless.
- SirBotchness, on 12/20/2007, -2/+3Man, an article with jobs as jesus, will it reach front page or the top list? Should be a check box upon submission. Does your article suck the ***** of apple? Automatic top listed for a week.
- Zot30, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Why is this news? Apple probably has a gazillion different projects on at any one time looking at all kinds of different interfaces for all kinds of different reasons. This doesn't necessarily mean something's on the way to the market any time soon.
- clari0n, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1I like this idea too. Perhaps if they incorporated haptics feedback?
- blackmage439, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1I assume this is announcement is an allusion to the "MacTouch" slimline tablet. It's the next logical step, and just one more way for Apple to penetrate the workforce.
- furo, on 12/20/2007, -2/+31) They sure aren't talking up the touch features in that feature list.
2) The touch interaction will be limited to HP's interface add-ons and not the OS itself to any great degree.
3) Pretty darn ugly.
4) It's not multi-touch in any way.
5) You seem to be suggesting that HP has suddely innovated a touch screen or made some great leap. Not even close. I get more "touch" capabilities out of my Windows Mobile Smartphone and besides that, touchscreen displays have been around for over a decade. People don't like them in large numbers because they are limited. Apple is taking it to the next level, and it sounds as if Microsoft will be doing the same with Windows 7, though this remains to be seen. I hope this is indeed the case. - cr3ative, on 12/20/2007, -2/+2Hands up if you got the CSS / iPod Touch advert reference.
- sonnybobiche, on 12/20/2007, -1/+1I think the rumor going around a while back that said there was "something strange about the touchpad" on the new subnotebook might mean that we get a sort of nintendo DS type deal. (A large main screen and a smaller touch screen below.) The touchpad itself, I believe, will be like an iphone screen. It will be capable of displaying information, and you will be able to perform pinch actions and stuff to manipulate the system. At least, that's the only thing that makes sense to me.
