- ThinkFr33ly, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Sorry, but GIMP is a joke compared to Photoshop. Anybody who is more than just a casual user will see GIMP's short comings in just a few minutes of use.
- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11NeoOffice is precompiled Java, and not executed under the Java runtime, so your arguement is moot.
- birch25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8oh god, that initial load on neooffice is killer. just about ruins the app for me.
- akilleen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6FTA...
"Gimp does require X11 on your computer. Running X11 is similar to running Classic in OSX. It is basically a virtual operating system running in OSX."
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought X11 for OSX was just an X-Server. Not sure how that could be considered an OS. - Bigfat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Same goes with Blender and InkScape, they're fun to play around in but having them on a resume won't get you anywhere. But hey, I remember just several years ago when things like this didn't exist in any form.
- Cheeseness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Audacity is Mac compatible as well.
I use it for multitrack recording.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ - gavintlgold, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8NVu isn't very good in my opinion, but NeoOffice is getting better and better (now if they'd just fix the initial loading time...).
Blender is awesome.
I love the open-source revolution :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Abiword also works on OS X http://www.abiword.com/screenshots/ it's faster than NeoOffice and similar to Pages (though I prefer Pages)
- Bakagamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not to ***** on the article, just adding my comment, but last time I checked, NVU's stagnant at 1.0 with a bunch of bugs in the code for table sizes, etc. The last release is still over a year ago. Don't get me wrong, it's a great program, but it's not without it's bugs.

- jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5One they left off is seashore, a little less complicated then gimp using less resources. I like it but im looking for a even more simple open source image editor. Any ideas?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What list were you looking at? Inkscape is on there.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just give me a universal Audacity.
- brandonhines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I still feel that NeoOffice/J and OpenOffice.org are too slow to really use as a total replacement. I'd stick with Pages and use NO/J and OOo to handle .doc files and copy and paste when needed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah I am getting kind of tired of these too. It's not like it's difficult to go to google and search for applications as you need them. There are tons of them out there.

- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"It's called stealing" On digg it's called copyright infringement...
- reidypeidy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Oh My God!, how many of these are gonna make it to the front page. There are way to many articles about this at digg. I'm a mac fan (i'm typing this on my ibook) but seriously, who cares anymore. You need to check the other dupes before summitting these things.
- supert0ad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4it's called stealing
- mattwestm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have yet to find a good video editing program that is free. I just use iMovie since it was included with my mac.
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hah, i love the people bashing on blender because it's opensource. I could understand bashing it because it was interface hell.
Blender wasn't always opensource. It was a commercial product that plenty of people paid for. A group raised enough money to buy it from the company who made it, and then opensourced it. - iheartbeer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pixen?
http://www.opensword.org/Pixen/ - SnyderMan32x33, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4this site has nothing on opensourcemac.org
- teckjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ardour is a great audio-editing app.
http://www.ardour.org/ - brandonhines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ooh, I haven't heard of that app before. Thanks, I'm checking it out now.
- knellotron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Blender's stable build is PPC-only right now, but there are Intel builds available at http://www.graphicall.org .
2.42 should be out in a few weeks, if you want to wait for a stable release. - Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's hope Xara Xtreme comes on that list soon (http://www.xaraxtreme.org/ )
- supert0ad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4gimp is great, but if you are used to photoshops interface, then the gimp can be a little tricky to learn. i switched to the gimp after 3 years of photoshop, and it took me about 8 months to figure out where all the tools are, but i like it better
- AndrewMB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GIMP and Nvu still suck very much and need more developing. I am currently running them on my Linux box and don't like them much but still find myself using them.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't know why everyone is rushing to replace M$ office on the mac when it works so well and Microsoft intends to support it for the time being.
- teckjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'd like to see a digg version 3 include a list that was editable for subjects like this. not a section for lists but an actual list you can digg names of apps and goes to the top of the list.
- ds9ds9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Probably student price, always cheaper.
- phytonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly. Howver, GIMP has been developed for years. Still immature though. LAME.
- hackcraft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does any one know of a good open source video editor program?
- Cheeseness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@sulaco
I could've sworn that Inkscape wasn't there when I looked this morning. If it was, I didn't see it (whoopsie)
@tapo
I was under the impression that parts of NeoOffice used the JRE (with natively compiled binaries interfacing with java classes).
All java classes are precompiled into bytecodes.
In fact a tip on increasing performance suggests that getting Apple's 1.4 Java runtime might increase speed.
http://neowiki.sixthcrusade.com/index.php/NeoOffice_Installation_Issues
I believe that NeoOffice won't run if you don't have a JRE installed. Unfortunately since I removed NeoOffice last night, finding the X11 Openoffice.org to perform better on my iBook (which, as the point I was posing to begin with - ie: regardless of whether it's natively compiled or not, NeoOffice seems to run slower -, is not moot) , I'm not currently in a position to check. - phytonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wait, why is NeoOffice now charging for early access membership for $80?? Geez, I bought my Office:Mac 2004 for only $72.
- mattwestm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Correct, X11 is basically just XFree86 for OSX.
- mattwestm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1haha, MS Office runs better on OSX than Windows in my opinion.
- lowededwookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is a version of GIMP called GimpShop which has the same keycuts and similar look and feel to PhotoShop.
- Midos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Scribus is lovely once it's running but installing it is a horribly confused process.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Because it's not Free.
- ghostis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's for downloads of the prerelease software. They need to eat after all. The stable downloads are free.
- AngryShroom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2blender works awesome on the intel imac. It runs very fast.
- lowededwookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't NVU nothing more than the editor in Mozilla, at least the old version of Mozilla?
In Netscape it used to be called Composer and it produced some very messy code although nothing compared to FrontPage.
Not to mention it's extremely slow no matter what platform you're using. - ghostis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also, are you sure that copy is legit?
From M$:
Office 2004 Standard Edition $399
Office 2004 Version Upgrade $239
Office 2004 Student and Teacher Edition $149
Office 2004 Professional Edition $499 - lowededwookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0try this one:
http://www.jahshaka.org/ - NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1As usual with OpenSource they are all terrible compared to their Closed Source alternatives, especially Nvu
- traemccombs, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3For the haters, Gimp and Inkscape ROCK! They are as good, if not better IMHO than Photoshop and Illustrator. Gimp was first to market with multiple Undo's. Photoshop came with it later on.
Most of the Tango icons were designed with Illustrator.
My biggest complaint with these applications under OS X? The fact that they don't have native carbon(or aqua) toolkit versions. I hate the fact you have to use X11 to run them. I want a native solution, I want the apps integrated with the desktop not relagated to run through some other application. :( - Cheeseness, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4There's now a Mac OS native version of Openoffice.org (requires an X11 environment such as the one included on the Mac OS X 10.4 disc), which I think runs a lot better than NeoOffice (NeoOffice is a java implementation of Openoffice, and Mac OS' java ruintime is disappointingly slow).
http://www.openoffice.org/
Inkscape probably should have been in that list. It's not quite as mature as the GIMP is, but in my opinion, it's still a viable Illustrator replacement.

Blender is *very* cool. -
