- bobcrotch, on 10/11/2007, -7/+57if you hate it so much stick with your G3 and os9.
You're worse than the PC user who still uses windows 98 because they're 'used to it' - Wailord, on 10/11/2007, -5/+41Did anyone happen to save the pictures that were on there?
Apple took the screensaver one down, as well as iCal. I wanna see both... - Radan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+36You know, I really don't understand some people. Apple introduced Aqua in the year 2000, and Microsoft rips it off in the year 2007, calling it Aero. Now when Apple releases a new operation system which still uses a kind of Aqua, people yell that Apple ripped off Microsoft. Well, that just doesn't make any sense to me... What's next? Apple ripped off Gadgets?
Though, as the guys above me said; who freaking cares anyway? (though, personally I'm not really that fond of transparent UI:s) - crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -5/+36I can do it on Ubuntu, too! And still, no one cares.
- inkswamp, on 10/11/2007, -5/+36> Even the people at the keynote thought it was a Vista joke when first shown.
Lynn, I'm going to reveal my age group here, but I think you should hear this story.
When I was in high school, most rock bands were aping Van Halen to some degree or another (at least, the ones not crossdressing and prancing around to synthesized beats.) That was kinda the "in" thing with guitar players. Everyone was doing some spin-off of Eddie's fretwork. No biggie. It was very popular with the kids.
There was this forgettable band around that era called Mr. Big whose guitar player was very much an Eddie-wannabe. He did this schtick where he would pull out a drill and run it on the strings to create some crazy sounds that were all very Eddie-like... and therefore, very popular with the kids. I heard it live (they were the opening band for Rush one year, unfortunately) and it was an amusing novelty but not much else.
Well, a year or so later, Van Halen put out a new video where Eddie was seen using a drill to achieve some of his own trademark sounds. Funny enough, he sort of outdid the Mr. Big, but predictably, all the guitar rock fans at the time cried foul that Eddie was ripping the guy off, despite the fact that the Mr. Big guy only came across this idea while trying to emulate Eddie Van Halen to begin with.
Ironic, huh?
So, do I need to explain the point of this story or do you get it? - MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -7/+36Are you guys really going to argue about who had transparancies in menus or dock/taskbars first? As if this makes OS X or Vista a must have. Is that really worth arguing about?
- QuorumCall, on 10/11/2007, -6/+35Well apparently it's a big deal to Windows users.
- audiowizard, on 10/11/2007, -8/+36OS9? HAHA I hated that worse than Windows...only Tiger changed my opinion of macs.

Observe the formerly translucent OSX window. This is 10.1. They stripped the feature because they felt it negatively affected usability. - zephc, on 10/11/2007, -6/+32lynn: When did Vista get a global menu bar?
- MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30Let me guess...Vista? Who frigging cares? It's not like it's a major selling point for either OS
- neonfunk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26word on the street is that the menu bar transparency can be turned off... although I'll admit I like the idea of emphasizing window content over menus & the like. has anyone else noticed that the drop shadows from windows are now much wider (but lighter), so it looks like elements are floating much further apart? I like it.
also: does anyone really care who did transparency first? it should be about who does what -best-, not first - rspeed, on 10/11/2007, -5/+27"hybrid of OSX and Vista"
What the hell do you even mean by that? - DrAtheist, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24We installed it on a "quad-core Xeon Mac Pro" and everything rendered smoothly? Big deal, we knew that already. Now tell us something useful like how it runs on lower end systems, like MacBooks, iBook G4's, mac mini's etc. A new OS running well on a top end pro machine tells us nothing useful.
- SirG3, on 10/11/2007, -8/+28*sigh* That menubar looks like an accessibility nightmare. Hell, I've got good sight and I find it hard to deal with.
- Endoplasmic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22@n8
Atta boy! Bigger images AND the ones that they took off! - turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22http://becomearobot.com/leopard.zip
all of the images in a handy-dandy zip hosted by me.
edit, or use google cache. :) - MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -4/+24also: does anyone really care who did transparency first? it should be about who does what -best-, not first
::Applauding:: well said - node3, on 10/11/2007, -8/+26@lynn
His point is that it's silly to claim Apple is copying Vista, when OS X had a translucent dock before Windows had their translucent task bar. - audiowizard, on 10/11/2007, -9/+27Dude...OSX has had a transparent dock for......three years now? I don't know, it's been taken for granted for so long...
'punks jump up to get beat down' - zephc, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20And OS X's dock has been transparent for years? So what? Troll.
- bobcrotch, on 10/11/2007, -5/+22... I'm sure you have a copy, I'm sure it's a Vista hybrid.
I don't know where people get this ***** they OS' are nothing alike, oh wait they're both new versions? - tyler0is0sexy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16http://one.revver.com/watch/68081
Here's a video of some other new screen savers.. - directive0, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18The best comments in here are the "OMG IT LOOKS LIKE TEH VISTA!!!" or the "THEY HAVE THAT IN VISTA!!!" ones.
For me, a constant source of entertainment. - inkswamp, on 10/11/2007, -6/+21Oh yes... OS 9. The best thing that ever happened to Microsoft. It certainly converted a lot of people to Windows.
- inkswamp, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19Yeah, yeah, right... Apple stole it from Windows. Even if you could reasonably make that point (which you can't because Apple used to have transparent Window title bars in earlier versions of OS X) you still have to marvel at how it was implemented badly on Windows and nicely on OS X.
* Windows uses transparent menu bars in the windows, which can overlap other windows and elements and therefore become hard to read and complicated.
* Apple uses transparent menu bars only in the system wide menu bar which doesn't overlap anything (Windows are not allowed to move up behind it) so it never becomes confusing or difficult to read. - zephc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Something tells me there will be an option to change that, if not in the System Preferences, then through the command line with the 'defaults' command
- xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16hahahhaha, wow I thought I would of seen it all but an os 9 fanboy.
/now waits for the Windows ME fanboy to post so hell can officially freeze over. - undersky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14that's why the title of this submission is called "PREVIEW"
- rspeed, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16There is a setting to make it opaque, from what I've heard.
- 1jaxstate1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15@gaf
WTF are u talkin about. - zephc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14You mean Powerbook G4? Actually OS X does a pretty good job at scaling its special effects based on your video card.
- inkswamp, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15> No, Apple ripped off Konfabulator.
And where did Konfabulator get the idea for small, single-task desktop applications that run in their own space? Hmm... where did that notion come from?
Oh yeah, that's right: http://folklore.org/StoryView.py?story=Desk_Ornaments.txt
And when you're done with that, scroll up and read my Eddie Van Halen story. It applies to this too. - MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16replica, why should they have to change it? They do exactly what they're supposed to do. Is it really any different than Window's dash-square-X?
It's a matter of taste...maybe you should find some. - falconer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Man, those pinstripes were ridiculous. It's so jarring to look at that now. That's way harder to read than the transparent menu bar in Leopard.
- audiowizard, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17Dang, three more months? I'm jonesin!
- Trat, on 10/11/2007, -19/+30lynn, did you replied this yourself or did the botnet, your Vista machine is part of, did?
- Boondoggle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12 by lynn 53 minutes ago
audiowizard , I am talking about the menu bar not the dock.
--------------------------
Yeah, and windows doesn't have a global menu bar. Unless you count the task bar. Which is more like the dock. Do I really have to explain this????
WTF?
The point is, OS X has had transparency effects for YEARS. - MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12gafasiesornivek,
Don't worry about it. We all already knew you had bladder control issues. - ahussain1986, on 10/11/2007, -7/+17I don't know about everyone else but ever since I heard that Leopard was delayed, I lost all excitement over it. 2-3 months ago I was really excited, but ever since they put the iPhone as the priority, I've become less and less interested. I would definitely rather have leopard coming out in June instead of the iPhone.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13I check a few times a day to see if a torrent is up yet..
Now that WWDC is over hopefully these devs get on the ball and release this *****. - MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10@inkswamp
I think we're about the same age...you have my sympathies - PAJK, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Surely this has been leaked by now? Torrent anyone?
- japface, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9i was hoping for a radical change in their look. i remember seeing those black windows a few months back. i dont know if that is a really new thing, but some smaller windows were black with rtransparency. looked really cool. i was hoping the whole OS would get that kind of change.
- rspeed, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Platinum really was a great UI style. Very clean. You can get Shapeshifter themes that emulate it.
- lintmonkey, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11New screensavers! Sweet!
- zephc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I think CoverFlow is pretty useless in iTunes, and I never use it, but I can definitely see the utility in it in Finder when combined with QuickLook as a nice way to browse through files at mostly full-size.
