Mac OS X Leopard 9A581's Dock Visual Tweaks
macrumors.com — Apple's Gold Master (Retail) version of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard has at least one visual tweak over the developer seeds. It appears Apple has listened to user feedback about the visual inconsistency with dock items appearing on a 3d shelf on the Left and Right side of the screen.

- cobravap, on 11/02/2007, -37/+3first... also am happy they listened on that.
- solidus636, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1We don't do that "first" crap here.
- GunDownCCL, on 10/24/2007, -12/+3thank god, i was worried about that. Now i just hope that they make it so cleardock still works.
- liquisoft, on 10/24/2007, -2/+29Nice that they listened. It didn't look horrific, but it also didn't look quite right.
- eddyc, on 10/24/2007, -10/+8Seriously, this must have been obvious to them from the start, I don't think user feedback had anything to do with it.
At the same time what a weird default visual style to set for the dock, maybe steve keeps his dock on the bottom so no other position actually matters that much to him and by extension anyone else - stalefries, on 10/24/2007, -3/+10I want to know if they modified the dock angle so that it matches the angle for icons prescribed in the HIG. Apple really needs to update the HIG, so much of what they have done recently is not covered in the HIG.
- rspeed, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2I wouldn't count on it. Things were so messed up it would look very different if they fixed it.
- dustinmacdonald, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3If you think the new 3D Dock was ever meant to match the "on the desk" perspective that the HIG references, you're gravely mistaken. Not all icons have/should have that perspective.
- willynilly, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1There are WAY bigger problems for Apple's interface people to address.
- FDL1, on 10/24/2007, -2/+6In the previous build, 9A559, Stacks would only work in grid-view (not fan) if the Dock were on the sides of the screen. I wonder if they resolved this problem (though it would probably make the text be sideways for it to work).
- DaffyDuck, on 10/24/2007, -5/+1"In the previous build, 9A559, Stacks would only work in grid-view (not fan)"
Are you 100% sure about this? I find it difficult to believe.- drlha, on 10/24/2007, -0/+11You might find it difficult to believe, but it was/is true, at lesat in the 9A559 build, no word if they changed/fixed it in GM.
- PathDaemon, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1All the demos show it working in horizontal view, so I'm assuming it's fixed.

- tyrione, on 10/24/2007, -6/+1Does it fan up or down? One would look like an erect dick and the other just limp. Either way, the grid view is the only one that looks functional for the side.
- aussieNickuss, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1You sir, are a bit too pre-occupied with dicks.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/24/2007, -5/+1"In the previous build, 9A559, Stacks would only work in grid-view (not fan)"
- digitallysick, on 10/24/2007, -6/+3I think the dock still needs work, it has the clear bar under it, i hope it has the option to remove it
- battletops, on 10/24/2007, -10/+11Please, somebody hack this style to work when the dock is on the bottom.
- Refrag, on 10/30/2007, -0/+9I'm sure you'll be able to set this style via the defaults command in Terminal. To learn more, just type "man defaults" in Terminal.
- Refrag, on 10/26/2007, -0/+1I was right.

- inspireology, on 10/24/2007, -8/+5Dock would look good if they added a slight blur to whatever was behind it. But the new 2D look is nice.
- fluidfoundation, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3Apple likes reflections more than blurs
- thunderer, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2Anyways, aren't blurs more GPU/CPU intensive?
- d3designs, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3Yes
- thunderer, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2Anyways, aren't blurs more GPU/CPU intensive?
- kiensoy, on 10/24/2007, -2/+10Like Windows Vista taskbar?
- astrosmash, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4I sure hope not.
- PathDaemon, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2Last time I checked, a shiny glass shelf didn't blur the things behind it.
- DOGPARTY, on 10/25/2007, -1/+1hah ice burned

- 95acex, on 10/24/2007, -14/+4Who cares?
- laserob, on 10/24/2007, -4/+27This is great news! I can have my cake and eat it too! Now if I could only get laid.
- fluidfoundation, on 10/24/2007, -2/+14It may be the cake you're eating thats causing you not to get laid.
- superkendall, on 10/24/2007, -6/+15The cake is a lie!
- lukee, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3The cake is DELICIOUS and MOIST.
- p4r4d0x, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1There is no cake.
- obeythefist, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1Anybody can have their cake and eat it too. The hard part comes when you try to eat your cake and have it too.
- rspeed, on 10/24/2007, -4/+12All hail Gruber!
- darkalias, on 10/24/2007, -7/+18The top secret feature, is that it?
- rebotfc, on 10/24/2007, -2/+3No, its just a tweak to perfection.
- willynilly, on 10/25/2007, -3/+3Perfection? Uh, dream on. Wake us when we can resize windows from their edges.
- tizz66, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Like Vista? That pisses me off, you go to grab the title bar and should you hit the wrong pixel, you start resizing it instead of moving it. Great idea.
Sorry, I think the OSX way is fine as it is.- arcticblue, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1No, the OSX way is not fine. There's been a few too many times where some window would get resized so big that the tiny ass resize handle would be off the screen. So, instead of just resizing it from some other place, I have to move the window over and over until I can see the little resize handle. Then, I have to resize it as much as I can, then move it some more to resize it some more. If I click the useless green + button, it makes it so I can see everything, but then doesn't let me resize it. THAT needs to be fixed!
- tizz66, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Like Vista? That pisses me off, you go to grab the title bar and should you hit the wrong pixel, you start resizing it instead of moving it. Great idea.
- NeoRicen, on 10/26/2007, -3/+1THERE'S NO TOP SECRET FEATURE, THAT WAS SAID AT WWDC 2006, ALL OF THOSE FEATURES WE'RE SHOWN AT WWDC 2007, I'M GETTING REALLY SICK OF HAVING TO SAY THIS!
- whitlock, on 10/24/2007, -0/+11Thank Graud! I'm glad I don't have to deal with finding a dock hack on day 1.
- DigitalKNK, on 10/23/2007, -1/+3Hopefully they will allow you to use either style. This style looks nice for a bottom dock also. I am excited they have finally fixed that eye candy for left and right hand docks.
- udahlen, on 10/23/2007, -6/+1Thank God!
- cave, on 10/24/2007, -4/+3Sweet! Say what you will about Apple, but they're one of the few companies out there which actually listens to their customers.
- willynilly, on 10/24/2007, -2/+1Really? That's perplexing, because they just whacked a ***** of iPhones. Now, which do you think generated more user sentiment, third-party apps on the iPhone, or the ***** Dock in beta versions of OS X?
- NeoRicen, on 10/25/2007, -1/+3*****, I like Apple but they are one of the few Companies that DOESN'T listen to its customers.
- DOGPARTY, on 10/25/2007, -1/+1customers are stupid thats why
- piwy, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1They might listen to the beta testers. Those while they might be customers to should not really be referred to as such in these situations.
- FHKE, on 10/24/2007, -0/+11OMG, It is leaked!
- LookmanTheMan, on 10/24/2007, -2/+3I really wish i had 129 dollars + tax
- ismith, on 10/24/2007, -3/+1DragThing will ultimately replace my Leopard dock as well.
- ismith, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1I got dugg down for liking DragThing? ...wow...
I do like the visual tweaks, but DragThing is much more capable and customizable– perfect for whatever I don't want to use Quicksilver for (process dock, temporary bookmarks)
- ismith, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1I got dugg down for liking DragThing? ...wow...
- trunks333, on 10/24/2007, -12/+1Vista sidebar looks better
- jasongdx, on 10/24/2007, -0/+6... they're not even comparable in their purpose.
- astrosmash, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4Go away.
- DOGPARTY, on 10/25/2007, -1/+1by Trunks' logic, Half Life 2 looks better than the dock or the sidebar so half life 2 is best
OH WAIT ALL 3 ARE DIFFERENT
- drzeus, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2I was looking forward to having my dock appear in 3D on the side. Now I'm going to have to make a lose-lose decision. A) Put the dock on the bottom so that it looks good, but lose some of my screen real estate, or B) keep it on the side, but continue to bothered by the boring flatness of it. Maybe I could start auto-hiding it.
- padfoot, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2But putting it on the side also makes you lose screen real estate, doesn't it?
- d3designs, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2Yes, but with modern wide-screen monitors, you have much more room on the sides, so therefore it makes more sense to put the dock on the side of the screen.
That's where I have my dock as well. - astrosmash, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1I'm sure it can be re-enabled from a preference, hidden or otherwise. Or, at the very least, there'll be a utility (like TransparentDock.app) to enable hidden dock features.
- PathDaemon, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1Or just let the dock auto-hide? You win in every way. I could never stand losing that huge chunk of screen...
- gitgan, on 10/24/2007, -1/+0I don't use the dock on the side but I just might switch - I get that the dock is kind of 3D, especially when stacks come out of it (at quite a weird angle), it makes sense when viewed with the space background and when paired with Time Machine but overall it's just eye candy. Hopefully you can chose this new look for the dock when placed at the bottom of the screen too.
- tpacyk, on 10/24/2007, -2/+1I must be in the minority - I thought the new dock looked slick in all positions and I don't give a damn if Apple didn't follow their HIG. It looks effing cool. This new crap on the sides looks like something from Windows 95.
- willynilly, on 10/24/2007, -2/+1Most of Leopard's cheesy "enhancements" look like Microsoft desperation. Meanwhile, we're stuck with the same ***** Finder and UI.
- DOGPARTY, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1windows 95 didn't have alpha transparency so no this would be impossible

- creamy, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1What the hell is wrong with http://digg.com/apple/Mac_OS_X_Leopard_9A581_s_Doc ... ?
- QueEsAmor, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1The extra "Click for large..." in the description sounded like too much work.
- diggSJaustin, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1Also, for whatever reason, the MacRumors article "digg" link lands on this one.
- MacintoshSauce, on 10/24/2007, -0/+0I actually love the look of the new Dock. It looks very nice on my 22" Samsung LCD monitor.
- Wander2000, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1And the torrent is where?
