Does it fix my WiFi?
Does it fix my Dock image problem?
Does it fix... let's find out.- clackerd, on 02/12/2008, -2/+6yes it does fix wifi - i almost chucked my mbp many times because of that. yes it lets you remove the ***** translucent menubar too. don't know about your image prob in the dock, but it fixes stacks to behave like old osx folders in the dock. its pretty much the *****.
- pearle, on 02/12/2008, -0/+5It fixed my Wifi problems (macbook pro). No more annoying network drops every 10 minutes.
- Kypt, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3It fixed MY wi-fi problem which involved being unable to watch movies wirelessy from my NAS drive at home. Before, for some reason, transfer from and to my NAS device was incredibly slow, even while wired, but it was specially annoying in wireless. I couldn't watch ANYTHING and moving files were as entertaining as watching grass grow. However, now it has the expected speed and I can watch movies form the NAS wirelessly :D. Atleast I'm happy :)
- skyshock1, on 02/12/2008, -1/+7Go check the changelog. You'll see the list of fixes.
- ncaauwe, on 02/12/2008, -1/+1It fixed my MacBook Pro + iPod touch wifi issue, finally! You know what it's like to have such a device and not be able to use it in my own home...with my freakin' Mac?! It's as if I just bought it again, I can finally look something up without running down to my computer all the time =D
- dbr_onix, on 02/12/2008, -0/+10More importantly:
What does it break? - astrosmash, on 02/12/2008, -2/+2Does it fix the DNS caching issue?
- Markok765, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1It did not fix my wifi, it still drops after waking the computer, but it only happens on my router.
- DarkDx, on 02/12/2008, -5/+35Updating right now. Will let you know how it went :)
Note: I'm using a hackintosh with vanilla kernel. You can update directly from apple but you never know...- estvir, on 02/12/2008, -1/+8http://netkas.org/?p=50 and make sure to backup various KEXTS and so on.
- zenwhen, on 02/12/2008, -14/+4It is a shame to see people offering help with piracy.
- DiggLive, on 02/12/2008, -8/+8Tell Apple to remove the restrictions that block it from being installed on non-Apple hardware configurations and I'd buy it. Until then, piracy is the only way to get OSX without the overpriced Mac along with it.
- zenwhen, on 02/12/2008, -10/+7Apple will sell you OSX in only one way. You just agree to install it on Apple hardware.
You have no right to their operating system unless you have a valid license. Since you invalidate any license you have to it by installing it on non-Apple hardware, you forfeit any right to run OSX. You do not get to decide their business model and the act of running software without a valid license is simply immoral.
If you buy a license for OSX intending to break the license terms, you are a liar. If you download it without paying for it, you are a thief. Both of these paths are also ILLEGAL.
Either way, people need to stop acting like they have a right to every piece of software, movie, or piece or movie under whatever terms they please. The person or entity that created the content is the only party who has the right to determine the distribution terms.
Stop being so spoiled.- Vanadium, on 02/12/2008, -2/+8While I completely agree that you shouldn't be installing OS X on non apple hardware, I don't think you are 100% correct. While it certainly is illegal to pirate OS X and download it from a torrent site, it is not illegal if you actually buy the software. When you install the software on non-apple hardware you are in violation of the Apple terms of use, however you are not in violation of the copyright law as you legally poses the software license. In summary, if you actually buy a copy of OS X and install it on a hackintosh you have committed no crime and cannot be prosecuted. Apple can however refuse to support you.
- Niightwitch, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1"Either way, people need to stop acting like they have a right to every piece of software, movie, or piece or movie under whatever terms they please....Stop being so spoiled."
I couldn't have said it better.

- DarkDx, on 02/12/2008, -0/+14So yeah, updated with the netkas instructions (thanks god I googled before ***** up my hackintosh) and it worked. Now the graphics update is there, inviting me to the dark side.
- BlueStarr, on 02/12/2008, -6/+2You mean the light side. MS/Windows is the dark. :)
- theenginedriver, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3Updated, and I still get the godamn "wireness network compromised" business. In an apartment building, I get people trying to access my network all the time, which amounts to constant interruption. I'm going to kill.
- insertAliasHere, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4Have you tried not broadcasting the SSID? That should cut down on some of those attempts.
- theenginedriver, on 02/12/2008, -1/+4Haha I just noticed I typed "wireness." I'm going to start calling it that from now on.
- STARTSOMETHING, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4Nice, I just sold my pc yesterday and bought an imac.
- erictheninja, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1When you update, GrowlMail will break. Download the beta of Growl from http://growl.info/files/beta/Growl-1.1.3b2.dmg and install just the GrowlMail package. It will fix the problem from 1.1.2 installs.

- Vermifax, on 02/12/2008, -0/+2Admittedly, there is a high douchebag quotient in the corporate and legal world. Throw in the teenage gaming trolls and you will have to concede that most Windows users are in fact douchebags.

- santaliqueur, on 02/12/2008, -2/+16Who said Macs don't EVER have problems?
The existence of one website does not mean that Macs are inferior. Don't forget about the multibillion dollar virus scan software industry that exists solely because of WIndows.- chromerium, on 02/12/2008, -1/+6It's a persistent meme that mac droolies state outrageous things like that all the time ... and has very little basis in reality.
Unfortunately just owning a mac will label you as a "mac fanboy" or a "mac droolie" when really, you're just a "mac user". Macs have their annoyances and failings, as does mac os X, but I think most people sticking with OSX are able to deal with the problems it has.
- chromerium, on 02/12/2008, -1/+6It's a persistent meme that mac droolies state outrageous things like that all the time ... and has very little basis in reality.
- wolfboyZ, on 02/12/2008, -1/+3If you had family members that bug you to fix their computer every month because of spyware/pop-ups, you'd wish they bought macs just so they can stop bothering you. It's not that macs don't have problems because they have many, just the non-tech saavy are less likely to get shady crap installed onto their system unwillingly.
- clak, on 02/12/2008, -24/+349Before all the Apple haters start proclaiming "Hey, I thought Apple was perfect," let me just say that I don't know any Mac user personally who thinks OS X or Apple is perfect or doesn't have some bugs, but compared to Windows, it's practically nonexistent. The end result is that Windows users and Mac users have different attitudes toward operating systems in general. Windows users EXPECT OSes to suck (and therefore all OSes to suck) to a certain degree, while Apple users EXPECT OSes to mostly work, especially without constant tweaking. So that naturally creates the illusion that Macs are darn near infallible.
And I know what you're probably thinking: don't tell me that I don't understand Windows. I was a Windows users for 10 years before switching. I can give you a list of things I haven't done after coming to OS X: I've never defragged my hard drive, I've never run virus software, I've never had to look for alien programs after a night of web surfing, I've never had to install drivers for my wide variety of mice (over the years) or my keyboards or web cams; I've never had to shut stuff off in the task bar (of course, there is no task bar in OS X), I've never had to "tweak the registry" or shut down my computer every day for no reason at all except to make it run better. So when you get that level of quality in an operating system, you just assume it to be better.- PaulPinfield, on 02/12/2008, -10/+104Dugg for telling a simple truth...
- dukeeeey, on 02/12/2008, -7/+24freebsd has always been a solid os
- DeFex, on 02/12/2008, -47/+4bollocks.
you forgot the "in my opinion" part. - iofthestorm, on 02/12/2008, -23/+7Uh, I never do those things on Windows either, and many of my friends don't either. If you know what you're doing you won't have problems on any platform. Also, just because tweaking is possible doesn't mean it's a bad thing. I don't understand all the registry hate, it's a central place for finding settings to tweak that normal users wouldn't tweak but power users can. Kind of like compiling your own kernel in Linux, I can do it and power users might to optimize their system fully, but normal users never need to. Just because you don't have the same level of customizability does not mean it's better by default, at least not for everyone. Personally I hate OS X conventions, but that's just me.
Also, why the hell would you ever have to install drivers for a freaking mouse or keyboard? That's just BS, the only time you would ever have to do that would be for gaming mice that have mappable buttons.- axcess99, on 02/12/2008, -1/+18I have a beef with registry on the grounds it is a database for both trivial/random user preferences as well as "System Critical" configuration. Mac has a solid separation of inviolate system file (/System), administrator user level configuration (/Library), and standard user level prefs/docs/configuration (/Users/bob/Library). Clean, simple, secure (in principle). If my user-level "registry" for a given app becomes corrupt (~/Library/Preferences/myapp.plist) it only affects me and is impossible for that to render the system un-bootable. It is easily recoverable (delete the file in question).
- zigziggityzoo, on 02/12/2008, -1/+13But on a Mac, you don't have to know what you're doing, and you still won't have problems.
- jollins, on 02/12/2008, -15/+3Typical digg users. Iofthestorm writes a intelligent reply defending windows and gets dug down, but clak gets dugg way for spewing mac fanboy *****.
- danielsamuels, on 02/12/2008, -3/+1..and for sticking up for a Windows user, you too will be buried. :)
- PaulPinfield, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1Glug, Glug, Glug
- mentat, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3Then you've got to have some amazing problems cropping up. There's no way you could be running Windows for too long and NOT have done stuff like defragging. Hell, Microsoft recommends it. If you haven't defragged, then chances are you've lost a lot of useful space and have a huge performance overhead. Trust me, do it now.
P.S. You've never tried to use a USB keyboard or some USB mice on Windows: Windows will actually look for drivers for those devices.

- samfishercell, on 02/12/2008, -7/+48Dugg. I love how these stories attract the PC fanboys like magnets. Long story short - I grew up mostly on PCs (but was familiar with Macs) and recently purchased a Mac after picking a PC for my first computer purchase. So far I love it, and while I'm not naive enough to claim that it's perfect and works 100% of the time, it's nowhere near the headache that my PC was. Yet, PC users often try to tell me I'm sorely mistaken and claim I'm a Mac "fanboy" based mostly on the fact that they touched a Mac at the Apple store once.
- Gregsaw, on 02/12/2008, -10/+3Here's a little fact: You still use a PC. Macs are personal computers, aren't they?
- mindsnare, on 02/12/2008, -1/+8Here's a little tip: who give's a rats ass, it's the standard nomenclature
- nytejade, on 02/12/2008, -1/+2Here's a better tip: "give's" isn't a word.

- skim1420, on 02/12/2008, -12/+7You may be describing why I've been so frustrated with OS X recently (particularly 10.5+). I *expect* these things to work, and high expectations will cause more frustration than low expectations. Time Machine has been an abomination to software, and a case in point why OS X's generally more black-box approach can be a serious problem. When the software (and such a critical one) fails so frequently, you resort to taking a sledgehammer to your iMac in the form of a fresh re-install.
I am a mac fan, but in the past year my WinXP laptop has been WAY more stable than my OS X. Look guys, there are weeds in every green field. Let's not lose perspective.
BTW 10.5.2 killed my Time Machine. My OS X is not pimped out in any way, scout's honor. - KillPenguin, on 02/12/2008, -12/+1Out of curiosity I took a look at your profile and found that just about ALL of your comments talk about how great macs are., or how terrible "M$" is. Macs are great, and I'd like to get one myself (but I'm kinda broke right now) but please, talk about something else.
- mrBitch, on 02/12/2008, -10/+2clak - you put in words, what I have been trying say since I switched to a MacBook Pro just over a year ago. In fact, you say it so well that I am going to have to repeat those words just so that I can have a record of them :
ie: clak said :
Before all the Apple haters start proclaiming "Hey, I thought Apple was perfect," let me just say that I don't know any Mac user personally who thinks OS X or Apple is perfect or doesn't have some bugs, but compared to Windows, it's practically nonexistent. That beats both the corporate conglomerates of Microsoft AND Apple.
- Vermifax, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1Linux doesn't run Logic Pro 8. I needs my Apple pro apps.
- nytejade, on 02/12/2008, -9/+6I'm sorry, I have to disagree with you. I'm 26 years old. I've been using computers heavily since I was in 8th grade. I use Windows XP (Home/Gaming/Photography Processing/Etc Computer), Linux (Fedora 8, Research Computer), and OS X (Daily use/MacBook) every day.
The verdict: They all suck - That's why I have to bounce back and forth between all 3 throughout the day.
I have to personally say that I enjoy doing work like coding and word processing in OS X, for many reasons, more than I enjoy doing it in Windows XP, but the reasons you're giving as to why OS X is superior are cliche and mostly inaccurate.
You've never defragged your hard drive because you misunderstand OS X's ability to dynamically defrag your hard drive. Yes, it does this, but only with files that are quite small. I'll give you the point on viruses. You don't have to install drivers on Windows XP for any mouse either, unless it's a specialty mouse with lots of buttons, in which case you'd have to install the manufacturer provided drivers on OS X to get them to work as well. I'm not sure what you mean by "shut stuff off in the taskbar" because, frankly, that doesn't make any sense. I do, however, consistently have to "Force Quit" programs in OS X (Text Wrangler, Mail, Safari, CyberDuck, etc) because they more than occasionally freeze for absolutely no reason. You've never had to "tweak the registry" because you probably don't understand how OS X's equivalent of a "registry" works. I'll tell you that I've had to recently disable the horrible dock that came with Leopard, and that the operating system runs MUCH better now, whereas I had to deal with a pretty laggy interface before. And I can actually see my damn dock icons now.
I'm not a "Windows user" more than I am anything else. In fact, I spend MUCH more time in OS X than any other operating system, and more time in Linux than Windows XP. I expect OS's to WORK, and frankly, they ALL fall short.
In my opinion it's people like you who give OS X a bad name.- mollerade, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1Without meaning to sound pedantec, i honestly ask you; Doesn't the fact that you spend more time with one OS in itself prove you find one better than the rest? Sure OS's haven't moved on as fast as we all would have liked, no one would say they didn't want a 100% stable OS, with endless functionality, all in an UI that shocks us at its simplicity and beauty. But some things are not going to be perfected in our life time. I guess that means you nytejade should combine the best from all 3 OS's?
- comradeTJH, on 02/12/2008, -7/+5I use Windows XP at work and have a PB G4 and a G5 at home so I use both worlds all the time and I must say I can't bash XP - I haven't installed any AntiVirus apps and I don't have to check for alien SW after surfing the web - dunno what sites you're regularly surfing ;-)
I also never defragmented my disks, usually my PC runs the whole week without reboot and I use Phososhop, Illustrator, InDesign regularly. XP runs fine, it's sleek and snappy when configured this way and usually does what I want. And that thing about "Windows sucks because of the registry" - I mean this is only an alternative way to store preferences. I can't remember how many times I had to manually manipulate .plist files on my Mac because there was no GUI element to change that settings... so I don't know if altering the registry sucks more than altering .plis files.
I grew up with Macs and was a long-term "Mac-fanatic" until I had to admit that Windows, especially XP isn't in any way behind the Mac anymore. I can remember when Mac OS X 10.0 came out - compared to OS 9 it was a HUGE disaster. You have to admit that. with 10.5 they made a big step to bring back all the features OS 9 had and even bring back speed and like any OS X great stability.
Vista reminds my to my first OSX experience. Terribly slow, useless transparency, reflection-effects everywhere etc. but at least you can disable them and bring back the sleek "Windows 2000" look again. - fugazied, on 02/13/2008, -0/+4Honestly I think windows 2000 was the most stable release of windows I have ever used.
I'm also a mac convert though, after about 7 years on PCs the switch went pretty easily. I'm never looking back, my macbook pro and OS X is just great. Of course there are bugs with it, Airdisks not working with time machine properly is one. But apart from that its fantastic. Apple seem to release patches in a timely fashion as well.

- blankoboy, on 02/12/2008, -2/+11I wonder how long will it be until Apple will be supplying newly pressed 10.5.2 Leopard media with new purchases of Mac hardware? I would much prefer a slipstreamed release than having to update installing the OS.
- supermanred, on 02/12/2008, -2/+3Why would you ever need to reinstall OS X?
Anyways the update took me 10 minutes including download time. - monospaced, on 02/12/2008, -1/+1They only make hard copies of the first versions of the software (major updates/large cats) and the software updates are free. How it's been done for a long time now, and it's not a bad thing.
- thejokell, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3That's not true. They will often update their retail packages with new releases and new hardware will always ship with the latest release (upon release of the hardware).
- supermanred, on 02/12/2008, -2/+3Why would you ever need to reinstall OS X?
- nycmac247, on 02/12/2008, -4/+2go to apple.com/support and download the combo update; much nicer as far as complete fixes
- SIRBERUS, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4Huh? How is it better than updating through the OS?

Or at least it did to me.. - johnpaul191, on 02/13/2008, -0/+1i have some issue (with my ISP?) where i can not do large OS updates through SoftwareUpdate..... but i can download them direct from apple.com. not sure why, but this only started when Comcast took over my area.
i guess i have to see if Software Update uses the same ports as P2P or something? stupid comcast.
- SIRBERUS, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4Huh? How is it better than updating through the OS?
- sckain, on 02/12/2008, -8/+3I thought it was funny as hell that there was already a post 10.5.2 Update, Graphics drivers
- supermanred, on 02/12/2008, -0/+6Not for me, may be specific to your graphics card. I like frequent updates, means they are working for their money. Over 1 year now balls to the wind without antivirus and computer running faster than when I bought it.

jsin1276: give it a shot. Like supermanred you can have both that way you have a good machine in windows to fall back on in case you don't like OSX that much even though it is unlikely. I had a bootcamp setup for a while just to "go back to windows" when I needed to do something OSX couldn't do. As I got more and more into OSX I found myself going less and less to the Windows partition. Nowadays I no longer have bootcamp installed. Given, I use VMFusion mainly for the DVD ripping abilities (MacTheRipper is not close to dvdshrink + anydvd, or dvdfab) but other than that and for code testing at work I'm always on OSX and well, VMWare is cheap :).- jsin1276, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1I think I might have to give it a look as I hear nothing but good things. Thanks.

- ajb2015, on 02/12/2008, -0/+8this may just be anecdotal, but I have witnessed 6 people switch to macs in the last six months. all of these people were lifetime windows users, but for various reasons decided to get a mac. i also made the switch recently and I don't regret it at all. i think apple is going to gain some serious market share over the coming year.

- zardoz73, on 02/12/2008, -7/+1Next fix Apple needs to take care of: Boot Camp! Installing XP is a PITA, and I'm waiting for a new version to be released.
- blorc, on 02/12/2008, -0/+3What issue is making it a PITA? I've run into two minor problems when doing Boot Camp installations:
1) Disk error when you don't format the drive during Windows pre-install setup. Solution: choose to format the drive FAT or NTFS (Quick).
2) BSOD when first loading up the disc. Some Windows discs just do this for some reason. Others don't. If it happens, just load up OSX again, open Disk Utility, create an image of the XP disc, and then burn the image onto a blank DVD w/ Disk Utility. Boot from the CD and try again. That should fix it.
Other than that, it's been completely painless for the numerous Boot Camp installations I've set up.- zardoz73, on 02/12/2008, -1/+1As to your #1: Windows doesn't give me the option to format. Long story short: in Setup it asks me to select a partition, and then automatically installs on the Bootcamp partition (in FAT32) without giving an option to format. This seems to happen randomly but it DOES happen and Apple has yet to come out with a fix.
That said, I haven't tried what you said in #2, so thanks for that. I'll give that a shot. - zardoz73, on 02/12/2008, -1/+1Actually your # 2 doesn't help me either. No BSOD, but it doesn't help me to make a copy of a XP install disk that's valid, but I know won't work. A small file, "winnt.sif" is preventing me from formatting the disk in setup. I'm trying to figure out how to remove that file and burn a new DVD of XP.
Trust me, Boot Camp is a real issue with some mac users. - spankaccount, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1Another issue that gets many people is they try to partition and format FAT43 their drive with DiskUtility instead of BootCamp - this will fail. Also, make sure you have an XP/SP2 disk.

- aegis9975, on 02/12/2008, -3/+1Aperture Raw support for newer cameras still doesn't work. They updated it for iPhoto & Preview but not for Aperture (where RAW is actually useful). Apple thus far is the slowest with RAW updates; Adobe, PhaseOne, etc have all had their RAW support ready from day one release of most of these cameras. Apple thus far is half a year late.
- vlurk, on 02/12/2008, -0/+2I have a EOS 40D, which in the DSLR world is still quite "new" and Aperture is working fine. Do you have the latest version (Aperture 1.5.6)?
- kreatre2007, on 02/12/2008, -2/+2I'm glad that this update is finally out but, some of the features (optional translucent menu bar and new folders on the dock options) should have been there to start with. A lot of my favourite desktop backgrounds looked like ass with the translucent menu bar. Thanks for finally releasing this Apple.
- AceyS, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1I think the transparent dock was just a nice touch they didn't figure people would care about. But people spoke up and they changed it. I think they just wanted to keep things simple so they didn't include that option to keep the opaque one, but they added it back. Yay happy.
- oshawapilot, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1I just checked and was still able to backup my MB to my iMac's time machine drive. I was previously using the "allow unsupported volumes" hack however, so I'm curious if my continued ability to do so means the hack remained intact through the update, or if Apple officially enabled networked time machine backups.
Has anyone who didn't enable the unsupported-volumes hack tried to setup TM on a networked volume?- CallMeMatt, on 02/12/2008, -1/+0As long as the TM drive is locally connected (via USB or Firewire) to a Leopard machine, then the hack is (and always has been) unnecessary. In 10.5.1, I've had my TM drive connected via Firewire to my Mac Mini, and have not had any problems getting my MacBook to use that TM drive.
If the TM drive is a NAS device (network connection vs. local connection) however, it's a different story. Not sure if that's now supported in 10.5.2 or not. Best to read the release notes first.

- toughluck911, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1Just downloaded the OS X 10.5.2 Leopard update. Apple says in includes loads of bug fixes, but I don't feel a real change. Actually, I have a hunch that it might have speed up the system. Did anyone feel the same?
http://www.pollsb.com/polls/poll/6331/apple-releas ...- moisie, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1Were you experiencing the bugs they've fixed?
- domster83, on 02/12/2008, -2/+3Downloaded and updated last night. 341MB for my MBP, plus 48MB for the graphics update. All works fine. Even got a Time Machine menu bar item that I didn't have before. Not much good as I'm not using time machine atm.
Its interesting how apple users look forward to updates, and Microsoft users often dread them. Its a fun event for us. Perhaps because we don't get 100 little bug fixes every week like windoze. - h3lx, on 02/12/2008, -0/+1Huge update, everything went smooth except it dropped my Wacom for some reason, had to re-install it... apparently I was getting by with my original installer package. It's not a good feeling when you lay that pen down and nothing happens. Updated Wacom drivers to 10.4 and it all works like clockwork. Having the tablet down would be a disaster. I would actually have to work!
It still doesn't recognize Adobe CS3 files with PDF support enabled as PDFs the way OSX 2.8 did. -
