- inactive, on 02/12/2008, -24/+349Before all the Apple haters start proclaiming "Hey, I thought Apple was perfect," let me just say that I don't know any Mac user personally who thinks OS X or Apple is perfect or doesn't have some bugs, but compared to Windows, it's practically nonexistent. The end result is that Windows users and Mac users have different attitudes toward operating systems in general. Windows users EXPECT OSes to suck (and therefore all OSes to suck) to a certain degree, while Apple users EXPECT OSes to mostly work, especially without constant tweaking. So that naturally creates the illusion that Macs are darn near infallible.
And I know what you're probably thinking: don't tell me that I don't understand Windows. I was a Windows users for 10 years before switching. I can give you a list of things I haven't done after coming to OS X: I've never defragged my hard drive, I've never run virus software, I've never had to look for alien programs after a night of web surfing, I've never had to install drivers for my wide variety of mice (over the years) or my keyboards or web cams; I've never had to shut stuff off in the task bar (of course, there is no task bar in OS X), I've never had to "tweak the registry" or shut down my computer every day for no reason at all except to make it run better. So when you get that level of quality in an operating system, you just assume it to be better. - PaulPinfield, on 02/12/2008, -10/+104Dugg for telling a simple truth...
- batmant, on 02/12/2008, -2/+61Fixed stacks FTW
- samfishercell, on 02/12/2008, -7/+48Dugg. I love how these stories attract the PC fanboys like magnets. Long story short - I grew up mostly on PCs (but was familiar with Macs) and recently purchased a Mac after picking a PC for my first computer purchase. So far I love it, and while I'm not naive enough to claim that it's perfect and works 100% of the time, it's nowhere near the headache that my PC was. Yet, PC users often try to tell me I'm sorely mistaken and claim I'm a Mac "fanboy" based mostly on the fact that they touched a Mac at the Apple store once.
- shitton, on 02/12/2008, -1/+37stacks in list view...finally
- virtualball, on 02/12/2008, -1/+35Uh-Oh, it's been 5 hours! The Apple ninjas got him!
- jsin1276, on 02/12/2008, -5/+39I think I might convert.
- DarkDx, on 02/12/2008, -5/+35Updating right now. Will let you know how it went :)
Note: I'm using a hackintosh with vanilla kernel. You can update directly from apple but you never know... - EvilAnimator, on 02/12/2008, -9/+35As opposed to all the super-intelligent and mature Windows users?
- EvilAnimator, on 02/12/2008, -6/+28It has 99.9% fewer problems than Winblows.
- deadnoob, on 02/12/2008, -2/+24i love macs just as much as the next fanboy, but i dont need to see the story twice.
- mizike, on 02/12/2008, -8/+26however bad mac users are; they don't compare to the sheer obnoxiousness of the average linux user......ironic that the worst OS (windows) has the least douchy user base....
- axcess99, on 02/12/2008, -1/+18I have a beef with registry on the grounds it is a database for both trivial/random user preferences as well as "System Critical" configuration. Mac has a solid separation of inviolate system file (/System), administrator user level configuration (/Library), and standard user level prefs/docs/configuration (/Users/bob/Library). Clean, simple, secure (in principle). If my user-level "registry" for a given app becomes corrupt (~/Library/Preferences/myapp.plist) it only affects me and is impossible for that to render the system un-bootable. It is easily recoverable (delete the file in question).
- dukeeeey, on 02/12/2008, -7/+24freebsd has always been a solid os
- gjscds, on 02/12/2008, -4/+19Why are you still on WEP?
- santaliqueur, on 02/12/2008, -2/+16Who said Macs don't EVER have problems?
The existence of one website does not mean that Macs are inferior. Don't forget about the multibillion dollar virus scan software industry that exists solely because of WIndows. - DarkDx, on 02/12/2008, -0/+14So yeah, updated with the netkas instructions (thanks god I googled before ***** up my hackintosh) and it worked. Now the graphics update is there, inviting me to the dark side.
- vault, on 02/12/2008, -1/+15Been reading Maddox, then?
- cvk_b, on 02/12/2008, -2/+14http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx ...
- zigziggityzoo, on 02/12/2008, -1/+13But on a Mac, you don't have to know what you're doing, and you still won't have problems.
- supermanred, on 02/12/2008, -2/+14The "List" option in stacks now makes stacks the greatest launchbar Ive ever used. I needed that for my downloads stack and my documents stack. Nice!!
This is so weird having my computer work better after an update. Man Im glad I switched a year ago. - BoomShake007, on 02/12/2008, -0/+12I wish it allowed Time Machine to write to network drives without hackery and workarounds :/
- vibrokatana, on 02/12/2008, -0/+11Most windows users think they are know it alls, which in the grand scheme of things makes them the worst.
- frizzipazzi, on 02/12/2008, -3/+14finally! hopefully it'll fix all the WEP problems I have!
- hotsoda, on 02/12/2008, -0/+10An an option to display as a folder!
- tomarocco, on 02/12/2008, -2/+12Come on trolls, get real. All software has bugs and needs updates. ALL SOFTWARE HAS BUGS AND NEEDS UPDATES.
Sincerely,
A Linux User who has taken an extensive look under the hood of OS X and OS X Server. - dbr_onix, on 02/12/2008, -0/+10More importantly:
What does it break? - blankoboy, on 02/12/2008, -2/+11I wonder how long will it be until Apple will be supplying newly pressed 10.5.2 Leopard media with new purchases of Mac hardware? I would much prefer a slipstreamed release than having to update installing the OS.
- usingpond, on 02/12/2008, -2/+11THANKS FOR THE CAPS LOCK *****
- ajb2015, on 02/12/2008, -0/+8this may just be anecdotal, but I have witnessed 6 people switch to macs in the last six months. all of these people were lifetime windows users, but for various reasons decided to get a mac. i also made the switch recently and I don't regret it at all. i think apple is going to gain some serious market share over the coming year.
- swany1012, on 02/12/2008, -0/+8No
- mindsnare, on 02/12/2008, -1/+8Here's a little tip: who give's a rats ass, it's the standard nomenclature
- TastyLamp, on 02/12/2008, -3/+10Dock still has bugs. Minimise a window, press Control+F3 and use the keyboard to select the window you just minimised in the Dock to restore it, then press Control+F3 again and the Dock crashes.
- estvir, on 02/12/2008, -1/+8http://netkas.org/?p=50 and make sure to backup various KEXTS and so on.
- iNunchuk, on 02/12/2008, -0/+6Does the update change Safari to the new Webkit Build?
- Vanadium, on 02/12/2008, -2/+8While I completely agree that you shouldn't be installing OS X on non apple hardware, I don't think you are 100% correct. While it certainly is illegal to pirate OS X and download it from a torrent site, it is not illegal if you actually buy the software. When you install the software on non-apple hardware you are in violation of the Apple terms of use, however you are not in violation of the copyright law as you legally poses the software license. In summary, if you actually buy a copy of OS X and install it on a hackintosh you have committed no crime and cannot be prosecuted. Apple can however refuse to support you.
- RubberBinder, on 02/12/2008, -0/+6or a DS
- supermanred, on 02/12/2008, -0/+6Not for me, may be specific to your graphics card. I like frequent updates, means they are working for their money. Over 1 year now balls to the wind without antivirus and computer running faster than when I bought it.
- rauz, on 02/12/2008, -0/+6I can confirm that...
Good thing I never use Ctrl+F3 :) - skyshock1, on 02/12/2008, -1/+7Go check the changelog. You'll see the list of fixes.
- chromerium, on 02/12/2008, -0/+5Digg has a collective memory of about 2 hours, don't you know?
- Schwab, on 02/12/2008, -0/+5Still isn't letting my ichat video work.
- chromerium, on 02/12/2008, -1/+6It's a persistent meme that mac droolies state outrageous things like that all the time ... and has very little basis in reality.
Unfortunately just owning a mac will label you as a "mac fanboy" or a "mac droolie" when really, you're just a "mac user". Macs have their annoyances and failings, as does mac os X, but I think most people sticking with OSX are able to deal with the problems it has. - JasonHilton, on 02/12/2008, -0/+5Change Log: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307 ...
- aspec, on 02/12/2008, -2/+7Wifi fix is nice, but I'm amazed that they seemed to have squeezed more battery life out of this thing, and the improvements to the graphics driver have everything flying again. I was getting sick of the lag on my macbook, but this certainly has made a difference in performance.
I've fallen in love with my macbook all over again. - CanadaMan87, on 02/12/2008, -0/+5I really hope they implement something for this soon.
- pearle, on 02/12/2008, -0/+5It fixed my Wifi problems (macbook pro). No more annoying network drops every 10 minutes.
- SIRBERUS, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4Huh? How is it better than updating through the OS?
- monospaced, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4look up the definition of "rumor"
- Gneekman, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4Nice spelling there, smart guy.
