- kajoob, on 10/30/2007, -17/+48Oy. now instead of quicktime simply telling me a codec is missing when trying to play an .avi, it crashes.
Avoid this and just use VLC - mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26VLC doesn't work with Front Row, a lot of people use front row, and having all the codecs makes it 10 times better. Get yourself a miniDVI to S-VIDEO or RCA adapter and you've got a portable media center, which is what I do quite a bit.
- cgomez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20All you need is Perian and Flip4Mac; then QuickTime 7 will play just about anything.
If not, VLC .86 is a universal binary. - wordsofwisedumb, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Perian also does this all in one little open source bundle. Eveything except wmvs. Good if you really like the elegance of quicktime or want the integration into the os.
http://perian.org/ - centic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I'd imagine you're using a PPC and not Intel, the article said Intel.. so that might be why
- LoadStar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9For those saying "just use VLC" - the QuickTime codecs also come in handy... for example, if you wanted to play videos through Front Row in particular. I'll have to give this a try.
- thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8FTA: "Some might tell you to just download Perian, because it does everything. Perian advertises itself as the “swiss knife for QuickTime components”. It’s not. I’ve had terrible experiences with it, it’s XviD and DivX support are terrible. This package included Perian, because it does play some stuff, but it also includes the native intel builds for AC3 audio/XviD Video as well as DivX, WMV, etc.."

Man, you may be taking this whole Digg thing too seriously. It may be time to read a book. - laserdisc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's the problem, Quicktime is short on "just about". Perian is good, VLC is better but fidgety when it comes to samba shares. Plus VLC won't help if you want to use frontrow to access your media from a server. More codedcs more gooder.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Perian is included in this bundle.
- MadMan459, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm a little concerned at how eager my fellow Mac users are downloading and installing this pack without question.
Folks, think for a minute. Who the hell are "Jack 'n' Jake?" Do you know them? DO you trust them implicitly with your system?
While Macs don't have many viruses/trojans/malware problems, there are a few out there. (even if most of them were benign "proof of concept" experiments.) Now, what do all of the recent high-profile "Mac exploits" have in common? They ALL require the user to download and install the malware in question, often supplying their admin password in the process.
Now I'm not saying Jack n Jake are passing infected files around, I haven't even downloaded the file yet, but we can't just blindly download and install willy-nilly any more. No offense to Jack and Jake, but I would rather have had a list of codecs with links to the originator's download sites so I can make my own codec pack. - Jones911, on 10/30/2007, -0/+4Works great and front row gets better battery time then VLC.
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"I'd imagine you're using a PPC and not Intel, the article said Intel.. so that might be why"
These codecs also have PPC counterparts, Ive been using my g5 with a hacked version of front row and an RF remote to countrol it for awhile now. I'll throw up some links if anyone still using a PPC is intrested
http://andrewescobar.com/ --------Shows you how to enable front row and helps you find a decent remote to control it
http://paulstamatiou.com/2006/04/08/get-front-row-to-play-xvid-divx-3ivx-videos/ ------Im assuming these still have the PPC codecs - pierrefilms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3VLC is nice and all and I use it for watching most of my videos...BUT some of us have QuickTime Pro and we like to be able to edit, clip, crop, etc videos so having these codecs allows us to do so with popular DivX, XviD, WMV formats along with video that has AC3 audio. QT Pro along with iMovie for titles are the two main programs I use to edit, prepare and export my podcast on iTunes so it's essential that I have all my necessary codecs.
So QuickTime Codec Pack FTW! - mglmouser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3QuickTime also has much better interface and more responsive time bar control. I hate VLC for that.
Flip4Mac was a damn good addition for that, when adding the Divix and 3vix (or whatever that thing was).
The only thing missing is a decent AC3 codec. DIVXDoctor II includes a basic one but then you need to fiddle with video editing tools (such as QuickTime Pro or MediaEdit) to recombine the audio track with the video making another conversion pass. Generally, those videos encoded as such as not worth my time so I just give up on them. - laserdisc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oooh Sofa control, I'm going to give that a whirl.
- runningIDIOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2again - VLC is great, but it doesn't work in Front Row. And subtitles are VERY important for watching stuff in another language.
- kimrules, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You won't teach him manners with a response like that, but you certainly might teach him irony.
- 00011000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2vlc 0.8.6 now supports apple remote...

check "interfaces" - jeriqo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Useful for Front Row but also the preview in Finder.
- notorious., on 10/12/2007, -2/+4perian + flip4mac ftw
- georgemoore13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2nm, beat b612 beat me to it.
- cecplex, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Really? This worked awesome for me. Do you have an intel mac?
- KeiichiMorisato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You know, it'd help if these encoders pick a decent subset of codecs to use.
Pick the best open source codecs or widely used codecs such as xvid/divx6, h.264 and use MP4 or AVI as container files.
Nooooo... They HAVE to use stupid-ass combinations of codecs for some unknown reason.
Can't complain to them 'cause they just end up banning you.
So far, I can play *everything* on my Windows but not on my Mac . - b612, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2they actually make a component to play vorbis but it doesn't integrate perfectly.
http://www.xiph.org/quicktime/ - norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Are you ***** me?? VLC solved all my codec problems on Windows and on my Mac. I don't use VLC on my Mac though, I prefer watching movies with Front Row.
I have an Intel Mac and I used DivX ( http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/download/index.php ) to make avi work on QT and A52Codec Universal ( http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27300 ) to make the sound work. That's it. - Kyderdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1VLC and Mplayer should play mkv files.
This site has a bunch of information on .mkv
http://www.matroska.org/
OS X Download page it here
http://www.matroska.org/downloads/others.html - Kyderdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mplayer will take care of your problems
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html - zodieman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Make a backup of your QuickTime codec directory before you install this. Just good practice since these stock codecs are a pain to extract from the install packages (Unless you use Pacifist)
- vannyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dont know where you get your windows codec pack from but i watch alot of anime and i go with what the community recommends and so far combined community codec pack has worked for 97 percent of the videos that i play and VLC works for the others. Its the reason i returned a mac mini and used a slim line dell as my media center. Because i couldnt put up with the lackluster video codec support on the mac.
http://www.cccp-project.net/ this is the address for malware free windows codecs and it took me all of 5 seconds to find on google. - cgomez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@laserdisc: I mean with Flip4Mac (Windows Media support) and Perian (FLV, DivX, XVid, etc), it adds media support to the core QuickTime 7 application that already does MPEG-4, MOV, H.264, and all of that good stuff. QuickTime on its own does leave a lot to be desired in the codec department.
- happygiraffe88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try quitting Quicktime and relaunching the finder after installing the codecs. This is working great for me...many thanks to the submitter.
- Slvgx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can use Sofa Control and control VLC with the Apple remote.
- lookadeez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This works grrrrrreat for me!Cheers!!
- kizio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Really good. Is anyone able to open this link?
- Ayuchuco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use VLC alot, btut I'm also glad I have the chance to play these codecs in front row. It's all about keeping your options open.
- Lounger540, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like at least 4 people missed the blatant sarcasm so far.
- Lounger540, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Except that it really doesn't. Try an Xvid + AC3 avi file for instance. There are other Quicktime components that will work. Perian also has problems with AVI's I join using FFMpegX that Xvid + AVI importor for Quicktime work fine with. So there.
- caddoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh ffs it just makes my quicktime crash when I try to play a movie >.
- soopah256, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2very nice. just installed it, and works great.
thanks for this. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Darn it! QuickTime and VLC doesn't play every codec ever created. Sure wish they worked as well as Windows out of the box since DirectX plays every single format, including 24fps film strips, AND gives me viruses! Windows FTW!
/sarcasm - jeriqo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1evildeadman : use aiff or wav.
- piwy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did you restart quicktime? As these certainly do work. Have been using most of them since i got my MBP a couple of months ago.
- sakabako, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2VLC isn't very good if you've got a mac connected to a PC. You can't get out of full screen without stopping the movie, the volume control is in the wrong place (it should be on the movie window, and it shouldn't reset to 287% each time). You can't fast forward using only the mouse in full screen. I find the interface to be very clunky. It's great a playing videos, and it's great that it's open source, but all you fanboys need to admit that it does have problems.
- runningIDIOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1does it works with SRT and/or SUB subtitles or not?
- evildeadman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1jerigo: Why? I understand that FLAC doesn't have the best compression out of lossless audio formats, but at least it does have some, which cannot be said of AIFF or WAVE. XiphQT is making the effort to, and it's getting closer to, being able to play FLAC through iTunes. Until then, I guess I stick to VLC for FLAC support, which is still slightly buggy.
- a0me, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1perian + flip4mac and XVIDDelegate.
I didn't know about Sofa Control but once the three
apps mentionned above are installed you can watch
almost any video through the convenience and
ease-of-use of FrontRow and the Apple Remote. - NickRamos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stuff is missing form this. I know Flip4Mac installs an app somewhere, that the plugin launches, Little Snitch tells me it looks for updates when it launches. I'm pretty sure DivX also has some other components because its not showing up on my export codecs in Quicktime. DivX 6 did before I pulled out the plugins, and it would tell me it had expired.
- b612, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not lossless
- b612, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this has perian and flip4mac
now if only itunes would play open source formats like ogg vorbis and flac -
