- aptmunich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And this list was made with Frontpage express?
Dude, Nvu is even on the list, why didn't you use it to make the site less fugly? - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, doesn't look so great, but a decent list nonetheless. Just found Butler yesterday, still getting used to it.
- NetSliderX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ugly site! Apps are pretty useful. Major bonus points for Universal binaries! Digg! Thanks
- rentz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0how many must have osx software posts do we need?
- ghelton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great list
- lvjtfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You keep an eye on http://www.freemacware.com/ and you're set with freeware. It's best to just get one at a time so you can really put it into your workflow.
- Kestral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Surprised that BBEdit List didn't make it on the list.
- Megladon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Dont forget yahoo ghames, i dont see that either.
- SPNKrPunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It wouldn't be another week without another OS X software list....
- diggm0nkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ya im a mac enthusiast and im tired of these damn lists... jebus
- victorycig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have to admit--the site is so ugly I won't click on a single link... No digg.
- snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+ digg
For pointing me towards iSquint... even though the page is hideous. - ghelton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0little snitch doesnt seem to be freeware
- maxrcul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A list of quality freeware..... I thought freeware meant free ware. Since when was Little Snitch free?
- dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, site's boring and this type of list is posted almost every couple days. No digg.
- dangerboy13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Umm, how many times can this be done? No digg.
- audiophil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how lame is that site... no digg.
- sonofson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0coolosxapps.net is a great site for handy mac apps.
- Lifelogger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A digg here, because it took me to Hand Brake Lite and the PureFTP server.
- pinetec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a big mac fan (I have four), but enough is enough. Another link like this was just posted last week. Getting pretty lame here.
- pozdena, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Acquisition is nice software, but not free. It will keep bugging you until you pay.
Growl was left out too:
http://growl.info - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Misread the headline as "Mac OS X is Essentially Freeware." Thought, "Oh boy, somebody's gonna get sued."
- energyblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0seen, downloaded, deleted friking years ago.
no digg - liquidrums, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All this stuff is free?? Little snitch is not free!
- spadin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He forgot Colloquy, one of the nicest IRC clients.
http://colloquy.info/ - zverg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1omg learn some damn HTML.. anyone else view the damn source? it's a hellish amount of waste. someone used a WYSIWYG editor, and probably not dreamweaver.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0How many times will a list of "great/essential OSX apps" get to the frontpage?
- dragazis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i hate these damn lists.
- spamdies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0al praise the mighty mac... all praise the mighty mac....
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dumb.
- Chrelion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To everyone saying the page is ugly, I like it. Why? Sure, it IS ugly. But it's to the point. I'm a huge fan of minimalism. All I could complain about is the fact that the tables' borders are visible. That could be turned off and it'd be perfect for me.
Now, great list - except Acquisition. It's begware. "Oh. Give me money. Pay me. Give give give." Great program, but that does get annoying for an app based on GPL'ed code. - Subtonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice audio listings...one program, Audacity, that actually is actually an audio program and the 2 are P2P apps.
No Digg. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BBEdit Lite

MacJanitor - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't mind seeing these lists from time to time, but what really irks me is when they say "essential" or "that you can't live without". I've gotten along very well without this software. Who are you to tell me what I need?
Also, did anyone notice that Acquisition is on there? That's not freeware. - stalky14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is it with you people complaining about the way the site looks?! What diffference
does it make if the presentation is clear and the links work? You get in, see what you
need and get out. I LIKE that kind of site and think we need more of them. I for one
am sick of excessive Flash, rollovers, anim-gifs and the like. - hardcoreUFO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Acquisition aint free. Its nice ... but not free. Same with SubEthaEdit, for that matter.
- nvrmnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This site has terrible descriptions of the links:
the few I noticed:
1. butler takes the place of quicksilver.
- This is so not true, I have tried each of these extensively and I use quicksilver, it is way faster to use it has everything you need and nothing you don't. It is better designed and doesn't crash all the time.
2. Handbrake " This is the VLC of DVD video encoding. It will take almost anything and convert it into almost anything else. Universal."
- What??? handbrake is a DVD ripper, that's it. not conversion from 'anything into anything else' DVD -> mpeg4. (no that it isnt a good app, I use it frequently).
3. Any site that says Transmission is worth downloading is wrong. This app has the absolute minimum functionality, and a poor implementation of it. - whitesanjuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1missing: emacs, gvim, fink, mplayer, synergy
i bought a powerbook nov 2004 and a mini in jan 2005...too bad there still aren't any good audio players ala foobar2000 or xmms available yet. ***** weak audio players are too ironic for me, considering i use my mac primarily for reason 3.0 and tracktion 2.0 - blurplevtx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Read the bottom lines, it's a low bandwidth site and looks that way for a reason, to keep the digg effect from taking it down or making it cost more than it should. +digg
- Nullo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Indispensable Mac OS X software:
http://madsenblog.dk/?page_id=11
:-X - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OSX VNC? that VNC server is built-in to OS X since 10.3.
- geezusfreeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, Little Snitch is not freeware.
Normally, I don't like these OS X app lists, but this one is pretty good. I still disagree with some choices, but for the most part, excellent. And, it helped me find Butler, which I am still comparing to Quicksilver, but it looks promising. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0kestral: bbedit is so 1990's. its gone from "bare bones" to "big bloated" editor. textmate is the hottest editor out there. try it out.
- WDot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm guessing that the list is so basic so as to avoid being "Dugg" or "Slashdotted." Dugg. As for something that's not BBedit, try TextWrangler.
- neuros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good list, f*cking ugly layout.
- dfunct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The any format to any format transcoder that I use is "ffmpegX" oh and I have to agree with elroy that textmate is the hotness it one of the few programs that I use on more than 5 extentions and it handles all the different code formats wonderfully not to meantion saves TONS of time thanks to its snippets
- wamzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ugly page, but a solid list. I digg.
One omission though, OSS 3D plug-in for iTunes. It turns crappy little iTunes into a full blown home stereo. Lots of presets and one can have lots of fun tweaking the bass frequencies and adding spatialization and 3D surround sound to their music. I only wish they had it for my iPod.
http://www.subband.com - timberfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good list, not great design :)
- Vryz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm looking for some kind of scheduling software. I'd like Azeurus to run ever night from 2 AM to 6AM, for example.
I can do this with launchD if I mess around with config files and whatnot, but is there anything out there to simplify the process? You know, something my mother could use? - riancurtis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i do not mind these lists SOO much cause i have found some great stuff through them. but THIS ONE BLOWS!!!!
why would you digg this? -
