Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" Completed Development!
appleinsider.com — A source tells AppleInsider that Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is now "finalized" and that Apple has begun to provide Leopard-related support training materials to its support staff.

- nace33, on 10/16/2007, -8/+111Finally, I can buy something with that $100 iPhone rebate!
- skoles, on 10/10/2007, -5/+23Exactly. So many morons were going to put it towards an iPod Nano when they had an iPhone already.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Didn't get the BT headset? : P
- crazymunch, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1What... you don't have OSX already? or am I missing something (I'm new to mac)
- Myonosken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well 10.5 is to 10.4 what Vista is to XP.
Well, kind of.- thejokell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Except it's actually a worthwhile upgrade.
- SirBotchness, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1yea, transparent menu bar, new search options, new folder view options....cause vista got none of that 10 months ago.
- thejokell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If you think that's all Leopard has to offer you're sorely mistaken.
- Syphon8, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's more like OS X 10.4 SP2
- thejokell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Except it's actually a worthwhile upgrade.
- Myonosken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well 10.5 is to 10.4 what Vista is to XP.
- xqb4dpx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1***** shoulda thought of that! instead i got a ihome2go (which is pretty sweet i must say)
- DocHoliday22, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1I don't care what OS I use as long as it has the applications I need to use to get some work done, but Mac OS is something I will probably never go back to. I found it too rigid and apps are difficult to find whilst the same ones can be found a plenty on Windows or Linux.
- Jem2768, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That'll be Mac OS 7 then... FUD alert!
- eboy, on 10/10/2007, -16/+40welcome to the future..
- xxdesmus, on 10/10/2007, -45/+11You're kidding right? It's Tiger SP1 ....whoopie!
- MtheoryX, on 10/10/2007, -11/+15Yeah, you must be right, Core Animation isnt that big of a deal, is it?
Dugg down for trolling.- xxdesmus, on 10/10/2007, -24/+5typical Apple fanboys...can't take a little sarcasm.
- thewfirestarter, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Typical ignorant troll. "Welcome to the future" is the line Steve Jobs gave when he announced the Apple II, and the crowd went ***** nuts.
Even if you don't like Apple, most geeks have seen that video. - shawnz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6no, it really isn't that big of a deal...
- diggimator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2IIRC SP1's are bug fixes. Not bug fix + Core Animation, new Dock, new menu bar, Stacks, Time Machine, Spaces, Boot Camp, etc. Hence previous poster was obviously trolling (probably Ballmer in disguise).
- xxdesmus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How many of those "features" are stolen?
Spaces? Yep
Time Machine? Yep
Boot Camp? eh...not stolen, but why do you want to run Windows if your OSX is so surperior
Stacks? uh...useful? I guess...no, not really.
New dock? The new dock looks terrible
New transparent taskbar? Gee, where have I seen that? Oh right...Vista.
- r3zonance, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3WIndows 2000 = 5.0, Windows XP = 5.1, Windows XP SP1 = 5.1, Windows XP SP2 = 5.1 Vista = 6.0 (should be 5.15)
Tiger = 10.4, Leopard = 10.5
So really, no you aren't paying for a service pack, it's more akin to moving from Windows 2000 to XP.- mikepictor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2good analogy. Not reinventing the wheel, but a significant update in infrastructure and features.
- MtheoryX, on 10/10/2007, -11/+15Yeah, you must be right, Core Animation isnt that big of a deal, is it?
- willynilly, on 10/12/2007, -16/+7So in the future we still can't resize windows from their edges, like we could on Windows and Unix in 1990?
So in the future, when you plug a new printer into your computer, nothing happens?
So the future's development tools don't have the basic functionality of Visual C++ version 1?
I can't wait.- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Don't be a troll. OS X does what it does, as it always has. Resizing windows is done differently, so what? Plugging almost any printer in that most consumers want and it just works. Sorry your Czechoslovakian 9-pin dot-matrix had problems. Since I (and most others) AREN'T developers, I find this this to be a non-issue.
- LeeSoong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1os x sucks because it doesn't include apple basic - even the commodore 64 came with basic for programming your own programs.
an extended basic - with commands tying into the os, and hypercard functions would be great.- zen6ox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you need a "basic" to program, give up now.
- mikepictor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sucks, because it doesn't....come...with BASIC?
Thanks, I will take the many development tools it does come with that would let me create my own applications.
- LeeSoong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1os x sucks because it doesn't include apple basic - even the commodore 64 came with basic for programming your own programs.
- zdiddy85, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Since you didn't number your points, I'll number them for you.
1. It's called Spaces, do you have it running 'natively' on your Windows? No? Oh you got that wi-gadget bar, right? What's that do again? Weather forecasts and a clock?
2. I've had more success plugging in printers on OSX than Windows, I promise. Windows is all like "Oooh, want me search this software? Or would you like to find it? Are you SURE you can find it on your own? Ok, let's look for it on your floppy drive, cause that's where all printer drivers should be. Oh, you don't have an floppy drive making it NOT accessible. Fine, you find it, we were getting tired anyways..."
And 3. If we're all using Macs in the future, why will it matter if people can't develop with Visual C++ version?!?! :p- Syphon8, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2You specify to look for it in A:/ rather than D:/?
And you people wonder why we think you're all idiots.

(Sure beats Windows pricing.)- stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Woot. I completely forgot about that. $50 is a big chunk for a discount. For a while, I though I would put off Leopard until I can save up a bit more. Hmm, maybe I can put it on my Christmas list?
- turpenine, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5sometimes your uni will cut the cost even more for you.
- loudmouth11, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4that is really amazing at how much cheaper leopard is than getting ***** vista
- stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23Well, I ran out of time to comment, but it seems that the deal is even sweeter than that! Looking at the college student pricing for Tiger, it shows up as $69. Link:
http://store.apple.com/1-800-780-5009/WebObjects/E ...- zweben, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8They know pricing it really low is the only way they're going to get college students to pay anything for it.
I wish more companies followed Apple's lead. Instead, companies lock down their software and try and sue the pirates... I bet lowering prices probably makes Apple more money than what they would get by putting all their effort into stopping piracy.- GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Almost all companies give out discounts to students. MSDNAA accredited schools give out Windows licenses for free.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Not related to an OS, But Microsoft does a pretty good discount for Office as well. $149 for Word, Excel, Powerpoint, ect. was the only reason I bought Office for the Mac 2004
- zweben, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8They know pricing it really low is the only way they're going to get college students to pay anything for it.
- jeehalte, on 10/10/2007, -7/+11I doubt that the university I attended gave each student I copy of Windows XP Pro for free, and one could buy another copy for $10. I however still use a mac :-)
- FDL1, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17As a student, MSDNAA gave me Windows XP for free... (Vista Business is also free, but it's Vista Business)
- Burn, on 10/15/2007, -1/+10What's wrong with Vista Business? I'm no fan of Vista, but as far as the SKUs go, Business would have to be second best. Unless you're using XP MCE 2005, it's going to be at least equivalent to your current XP.
- lharrod, on 10/15/2007, -0/+2The problem with Vista Business is the fact that it's second best in its line-up. If it's free, cool, but if I were paying for it, I'd want the best of the line-up.
- Burn, on 10/15/2007, -1/+10What's wrong with Vista Business? I'm no fan of Vista, but as far as the SKUs go, Business would have to be second best. Unless you're using XP MCE 2005, it's going to be at least equivalent to your current XP.
- digitallysick, on 10/10/2007, -10/+3So remember when checking out at the apple store always select "student" and make up a school
- ajchavar, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5i had to verify with a .edu email account, that matched the school i selected, so that probably won't work
- digitallysick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I got my powerbook that way and saved a hundred or 2 off of the price, it worked for me with the computers, i assume it would for the os.
- mattyG, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Should have used Apple Student Developer and saved more

(Sure beats Windows pricing.)
No. No it doesnt.
Windows XP was released in October 2001. Every update since then has been free. Not $130. Not $80 for students. Nonthing, there are no pay-for-point release updates. Windows Vista was released in January 2007.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Windows#Tim ...
A Windows XP user has paid $150(ish) for his OS since Oct. 2001. Total. Full Stop.
Windows Vista Ultimate costs (via Pricewatch): $173.99 - windows vista ultimate $ 76.53 - windows vista starter $ 76.99 - windows vista home premium $ 75.00 - windows vista home basic
A OSX user has paid $130 for 10.0 or 10.1 in 2001. He has ALSO had the privilege of paying $130 for a point release (10.2, 10.3, 10.4 and soon 10.5) very year since, $130 each time.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osx#Versions
A OSX user has paid $520 for OSX since 2001.
A OSX user will pay $130 for 10.5 shortly, bringing him to $650 since 2001.
A Windows XP user has paid $150 for XP since 2001.
A Windows user will pay $175 for Vista now, bringing him to $325 since 2001.
Are you *REALLY* trying use a "discounted" to $80 update as an example why Windows' updates are expensive at $0?- HerrEisenheim, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Only $150 for the OEM or upgrade version. Windows XP retail was $279, the same as Windows Vista Business retail. Windows Vista Ultimate retail is $349.
All version of OS X are full version retail. - manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20The problem here is if you consider XP => XP SP1 to be as significant an update as Tiger => Leopard. From the Mac community, at least, that would be a resounding NO. Apple has a very different release schedule than Microsoft. Microsoft has major updates every five or six years, if XP => Vista is any indication. Apple releases major updates every 2 or 3 years. Microsoft releases a few service packs between releases, Apple equivalently releases point updates (10.4.1, 10.4.2, etc), which are also free. They both also release security updates as necessary between those.
Also, believe it or not, you don't _have_ to update. Mac users often do because of new functionality they're willing to pay for. If you aren't, don't. Simple as that.
I should also point out that you're quoting Windows OEM prices. Since we're talking about buying a copy in the store, retail prices are more appropriate. I believe that the retail price for Vista Ultimate is several hundred dollars.- snoozevmw, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1I looked all over for a mac OEM price, but could not find one.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That's because the OS X OEM price is free when you buy a Mac. Just like it is when you buy a Windows PC.
- snoozevmw, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1I looked all over for a mac OEM price, but could not find one.
- erictheninja, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5If you're smart, you would go in on the 5-license family pack with friends. New OS X versions average $170 for 5 licenses when it first comes out or $34/person. So, after purchasing OS X 6 times that comes out to $204 vs. $325 for Windows XP and Vista.
You might also want to note that you're Windows XP prices are OEM prices, not retail. Home Retail sells for $200 and Pro for $280 on New Egg. And the retail price for almost all version of Vista are over $175.
p.s. 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 really weren't point releases. It makes it sound like you're comparing a Windows service pack to a buying a 10.3 upgrade from 10.2 - nakile, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10You act like Microsoft's service packs add a lot to the OS. Not really. Most all of it is security and bug fixes. By your logic XP Service Pack 2 should have had Flip 3D in it.
- captjc, on 10/10/2007, -6/+15God I am sick and tired of this Point Release BS. It is only a "point release" because that is how they decided to number it. Would you still be bitching if 10.5 was named MacOS 2007.
Technically Windows 3.1, 3.11 were all just point releases to Windows 3.0
Windows 98 (v4.10.1998), 98SE (A paid-for service pack v4.10.2222) and ME (v4.90) were just point releases to Windows 95 (v4.00).
Guess what, Windows XP (v5.1) is also a point release to Windows 2000 (v5.00)
Maybe you should be bitching for paying for those too - stmiller, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3OS X operating system version releases != windows service packs.
10.4.1, 10.4.2, thru 10.4.10, etc are a comparison for that, perhaps.
There is no copy protection or activation on OS X discs anyway. So it is as freely available as windows out there... - WhereAmI, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5wageslaven isn't just a 360 troll, he's all Microsoft.

- lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"I'd call that 'having an opinion'."
Not quite. Being a troll is having an opinion in an *****-ish manner. It's the difference between "I personally don't like milk" versus "Milk drinkers are idiot fanboys."

- jkoke, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Sounds about right. So you're saying a Windows user paid less and got less. Will the miracles of a free market never cease.
- DOGPARTY, on 10/10/2007, -0/+410.1 > 10.2 , hardware accelerated desktop (like vista)
10.2 > 10.3 , Expose (like flip3d but 100 times more useful) filevault
10.3 > 10.4 dashboard (like gadgets only better and with a hell of a lot more useful ones), spotlight, new mail, CORE IMAGE, Core Audio
hmm not really comparable to service packs - sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1My OS costed nothing (Ubuntu), beat you both!
- lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yay. You're a winner.

- ViolentV, on 10/12/2007, -31/+4Being a junior in computer science, I can say any OS apple puts out we will never ever program on. It's windows only no one wants to work on it. Hold on...do you program for Windows or not? I'm guessing your college doesn't sweat teaching how to write coherent sentences.- brutalentropy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Right, he says it's windows only......... then says everyone has moved to Unix and Linux based system. That guy is a genius.
- brutalentropy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow a CS major! Give us a moment to bow down because of your superiority. Newsflash: I've known some CS majors that are complete retards... Even if you're not one of them, you're definitely not speaking for the industry as a whole.
- lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I kinda think he is one of them. Anyone that makes an "ever" statement turns out to be a retard. "No one will ever use that..." blah blah blah. "That's the worst thing ever..." yada yada yada, "I will never use that ever..." wah wah boo hoo.

- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hey, they worked hard on the shading for those annoyance dialogs... blood, sweat and tears (and not just the user's)...
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Right, because calling something a "name" means it's soooo much better and adds much more functionality than a number. Good thing we have you around to explain these things.

- goodcow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This may not be true for Leopard. They cut the student discount for iLife and iWork to a measly $9 with the new editions.
- aussieNickuss, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1My job let's me purchase Vista Business and Office 07 Enterprise for $33 which is pretty good deal for MS goods BUT I get a Leopard disc for FREE because we get one official disc for each Mac in the school (about 100...mine included) which is even better.
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2On the other side of things, home users should not forget about the very reasonable family packs - usually just $20 more for five licences. A fair increase to pay for staying legit with licences.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You mean $20 more PER license that only comes in a family pack of five for $199. It is a great deal and with four Macs in the house, that's the route I go. What people don't get is that so far, Apple doesn't force you to enter OS License codes which means I can put a single license on as many machines as I want. Because I'm not a cheap bastard with a false sense of entitlement, I get the 5-user pack with OS releases and iLife/iWork.
- tgoose, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Who cares about Windows pricing? It sure as hell doesn't beat Linux pricing ;)

- hotdamn, on 10/12/2007, -19/+13I really hope they did something with the remnants of aqua instead of making leopard look like some weird freak of nature.
I have my fingers crossed that the GUI on the latest build is not final. I hate being petty like this, but nice looks are a part of why I justify the Apple premium to myself.- zeeky, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8amen. the scrollbars are THE worst match. i cant believe they're mixing aqua scrollbars and gray metal everything else. looks terrible. and i hate the gray anyways, which is way to dark...
- LeeSoong, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1it would be nice to pick your own color, like in windows xp.

- Iceduck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I totally agree. I can't believe that people are digging you down, but the old 2001 Aqua scrollbars should be replaced with the ones from iTunes.

- wallykid, on 10/10/2007, -12/+4iTunes always had a better way to keep a file library than finder... now they're converging
- willynilly, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Yeah, that's why, when a file goes missing, iTunes can't tell you where the hell it thinks it's supposed to be.
And that's why, when you add music to your iTunes music folder, it doesn't show up in iTunes unless you manually add every single file to your library.
Is that the "better way" you're talking about?
The Finder is a piece of *****, but it's still not as bad as iTunes.- jferrari, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You need to tick the boxes that says 'Keep iTunes folder organised' and 'Copy files to itunes library', then it works perfectly.
If you just stick your files anywhere and randomly move them about or delete them, yes it will loose them.

- NoeValleyGuy, on 10/10/2007, -23/+9I have had the last release of Leopard and I am not all that impressed. it still has the steel look to it, and the spaces functionality has been in Linux for a long time. I hate to say it, but I was hoping that the interface would be nicer than Windows Vista Aero, but it really is just a small update from Tiger.
- neomis, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5Well thats because its OS X 10.5 not OS X 11.
- joel8x, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Wrong - the .5 indicates a major upgrade, not a minor one. The upgrade is all about underlying technology, not about eye candy. Every OS X release has been this way - each one has minor interface tweaks between each version, but the real upgrades are under the hood.
- AZooYorkMystery, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Neomis, you realize X actually stands for something, don't you?
- stxhess, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6aqua has always been better than Aero. aero is loud and in your face, not good.
- amadeusdemarzi, on 10/10/2007, -7/+14are you kidding? vista is worse than XP. Sorry, Tiger is leagues ahead of any windows version in terms of UI. Leopard is a a subtle upgrade perhaps, but very strong refinement to an already great UI.
- deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6The OSX GUI works very well. Apple didn't want to radically change the look & feel for no good reason.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Vista's UI is lots of flash and glitz for little reason other than to have flash and glitz. OS X makes sure that the eye candy is functional, not just cosmetic.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Just wait 'till you see that transparent menubar in Leopard... might change your mind about that. Detrimental glitz FTW!
- willynilly, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Yeah, heaven forbid that Apple add something useful, like user-definable color schemes, which Windows has had for almost two decades. Instead, we have the same outdated black-text-on-white-background UI from the '80s. Instead of setting up a color scheme to their liking in a matter of minutes, Mac users must sit and wait for years to see if Apple's going to dribble out a new one.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes because have purple text on a blue background with orange highlights just adds SO much to the experience of using a computer!

- powrypop, on 10/10/2007, -9/+6obviously it's a long way off but out of interest, how many more variations of OS X do you think Apple will go through before they release OS XI? Could this be the last or will there be a 10.6?
- CATSCEO, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1When they announce Lion then we should think about OS XI
- manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Apple will release OS XI when, and only when, OS X no longer serves. They moved from OS 9 to OS X because OS 9 was showing its age, and OS X offered a much more stable underpinning, and an opportunity to start over. I don't see any problems with the stable UNIX backend right now, and I don't think Apple does, either.
- etx313, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12They are gonna ride this wagon into the ground. Good thing it's a freaking sweeeet wagon.
- bobartig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1back in the days of 10.0 developer preview, Steve used to talk about how macosx was building this robust platform that could be used on the mac platform for the next decade. Its been 6-7 years since then, and theres probably no reason that we wouldn't expect to see many more years of macosx, unless they run into marketing problems and need to rename it.
- ggko, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Probably the real limiter is when they run out of felines ... when we start getting "OS X: Mr. Snuggleface," and "OS X: Longcat," then Apple will probably start seaching for a new name.

- ggko, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Probably the real limiter is when they run out of felines ... when we start getting "OS X: Mr. Snuggleface," and "OS X: Longcat," then Apple will probably start seaching for a new name.
- deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I think it will be soon. The mach kernel is known to have some major design flaws. It's kind of a dinosaur compared to other micro-kernel designs. I remember reading a rumor that Apple was looking at the L4 kernel as a successor to mach in OSX. Or, who knows, they could get into bed with Sun and use the Solaris kernel or perhaps go with a straight FreeBSD code grab. The options are endless thanks to the modular design of UNIX based systems.
- MtheoryX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6When they run out of cat names and need to switch to another animal?
- bradkovach, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They've been going with the Felidae Pantheridae. According to Wikipedia, there's "Lion" and three more Leopards. See for yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantherinae
- MAJORstrasser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No, just big cats. Cheetah's not in there, for example. And come on: do you really think Apple's going to put out something called "OS X 10.6, Bornean Clouded Leopard?" Really...that's starting to get into Microsoft territory.
Cougar, Lynx, and maybe Lion...that's probably what we're looking at before Apple does a major overhaul and renames the brand, considering another two releases will carry us through the decade and that Apple's already trademarked Lynx and Cougar.- LeeSoong, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Cougar - isn't that the name of an automobile?
http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com/2002-me ...
how can Apple trademark a name already used by a car? - MtheoryX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A lynx is not a "big cat" though. That's odd. Maybe it'll just be a "medium" release ;)

- hotdamn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Hey Africa, how about a Lionesse?
- Kitsune818, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Wow, not one factual answer. The OS main revision number is tied to the kernel. Don't expect Mac OS 11 (I doubt XI, not very Apple-like, it's not symetrical) until they replace the mach kernel or significantly change it. Each major revision of Mac OS has tended to promote a major system level improvement, like multitasking.
- lofilotek, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2I hope the multiple desktop feature(aka spaces) works as good as Virtuedesktops does, complete with command tab magic! Quick view should also be pretty awesome! I am still very curious about time machine. Wonder if it will require a raid because I don't know how they plan to get files back from a sector that has been over written with out some sort of raid backup.
- deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You can do Command left/right to switch Spaces. It also supports multiple monitors.
- bobartig, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I bought a newertech guardian maximus hardware mirrored raid enclosure and some big drives in preparation for time machine. Timeto do backup right (unless time machine has some serious showstoppers in it. )
- Kitsune818, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1RAID != backup. RAID == downtime reduction.
- Phatt138, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It certainly does not require an array of any sort. All that Time Machine does is make incremental backups of files as they're modified or created on a day-to-day basis (along with one system-wide backup at the beginning). It's like any of the 10+ major OS X backup solutions out there right now except that it goes a step further and hangs on to the old copies as well. If you make a Time Machine backup on an external drive and then take a peak at the file structure, you'll see that it literally has a copy (an incremental one, but essentially a copy) of your entire computer for every day. The user defines how much of his drive's room he wants to take up with Leopard backups, and that's the only limitation. It would be like making a new .dmg backup yourself daily. You'd be limited by the physical space, but you could do it with any kind of storage device. Has nothing to do with 'retrieving' anything in the physical sense.

- Bungler, on 10/10/2007, -8/+13I'll consider Leopard if Apple fixes the Finder (which plops .DS_STORE and .Trashes folders everywhere). In today's world of networked computers, portable storage and various OSs sharing files, the Finder's inadequacy is unacceptable.
- deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19Windows does the same thing with thumbs.db, desktop.ini and the RECYCLED folder. On OSX you can disable .DS_STORE & .Tashes creation with a util called OynX. The only drawback is you will lose the ability to remember saved views (icon placements, custom backgrounds, etc) in those folders.
- willynilly, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2As usual, the Mac solution is an obscure third-party utility. The arrogance and ignorance of depositing this ***** all over other people's computers is just incredible. Why in hell doesn't the BROWSING computer store a hash of visited locations' paths ON ITSELF along with the settings? Not only does that respect the other people's computers, but it prevents other users from walking all over your views when they visit the same location.
- Karmavs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6because a folder's view is a property of the FOLDER, not of the computer accessing it. If I'm looking at a photo over the network, i want it to look the same as it does on my computer, and if I move the folder, I want it to do the same - I can't see any reason one would want this...
- zekica, on 10/14/2007, -1/+4As usual, Windows Explorer needs an obscure utility to tweak it not create thumbs.db in every folder with pictures/videos...
- Bungler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Onyx is not a solution to this problem. It is just a tool to remove the DS_STORE files. I could write a script myself, but that is not the point. Pathfinder is a better solution (http://www.cocoatech.com/) but should users have to pay for a decent file manager? Windows, Gnome and KDE all have file managers with better behaviour than the OS X Finder.

Same old bugs? Damn right. Try creating a subdirectory. Same old *****: It's created at the root of the volume, not under the directory that was selected. - monkeyvoodoo, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2No really, I am typing this from a recent developer seed. It really is the exact same, old Finder, complete with all the old bugs (and new ones! yay!). They really did simply slap cover flow on it and call it new. - willynilly, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3The BROWSING computer should store a hash of visited locations' paths ON ITSELF along with the metadata. Not only does that respect the other people's computers, but it prevents other users from walking all over your views when they visit the same location.
In the rare instance that something changes and invalidates the hash, big deal: You reset your view and you'll probably be fine for a long time.

- colincornaby, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Technically, Windows is backwards. Every other OS knows that a file that starts with a period is invisible and shouldn't be shown anyway.
- willynilly, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2WTF does that have to do with anything? A visiting computer should not be littering other computers' filesystems with crap, "invisible" or not. These turds create major problems for post-production facilities, for example, which may have hundreds of thousands of image files in directories.
- ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1You are being brainwashed by Unix idiots. People actually change how their folders look (even pros) and the use of hidden plain file is the safest method to store them. Should it create when not a single customisation exist? No of course.
- stuf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Sure, for a system where files aren't being transferred on removable media. In my head, separate meta files make much more sense than one centralized one, since you don't have to search through a huge catalog instead of just a single file per item if necessary.
- arkmannj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Is CS3 working properly under 10.5 yet, last I heard it was having issues ?
I really want Leopard, but if CS3 runs like crap then that's a show stopper.- BeavisMcSleavis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Damn Good Point. Let me know?
- ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Why you guys don't ask the vendor, Adobe systems? Apple can't recode entire OS just to fix their bugs, normally they are the ones who should check their suites compatibility.
- antitab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What issues? It's been running fine for me since June, foregoing debate as to what exactly the definition of "running fine" with respect to Adobe apps actually is.
- yabos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No one ever said there were issues. Adobe said it hasn't been fully tested under Leopard yet.
- kkiran, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4I may buy a family pack and share it with my house mates (a big house with 10 rooms - 6 macs!!). Hope they give discounts for a family pack ;)
- stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Sorry, I checked, but the family pack is still $199, even with the student discount. Either way, it's cheaper than buying 6 copies!
- davidtmarquez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I read somewhere though that they sold it for $179 just like Tiger.
Oh and, I was able to email Steve whether or not you could share the family pack of Leopard with other friends. :))
- inf0, on 10/10/2007, -25/+5Does it come with a brain? Because most Mac users could sure use one! (I work in tech support, and let me tell you, Mac users don't know SH*T about their computer)
- larthallor, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6As opposed to Windows users? Pleeeease.
- tubeblender, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I can already tell what sort of support you give.
- ttamshadbolt, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I work in tech support, and most windows users know how to troubleshoot because they've done it before
- time4evacuation, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5You work in tech support and you talk to people who don't know much about computers? You deserve a medal.
- vladx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I'm sure you know what you are talking about.
- danasghar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I use a Mac...what the heck is this"tech support"?
- Zal91, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Does that mean I am running the final release of Leopard (9A559)?
I am very happy with the current build, I have been running it ever since it was seeded to ADC; haven't had an OS crash yet.
CS3 works, although one time my keyboard failed to respond at all until a reboot.- alphaone, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1That's a pretty serious bug.
- Phatt138, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, I'd say you're running the last developer pre-release of Leopard ever. But hey, that's something.
- yabos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Apple will seed the GM build to developers.
- obxjdt, on 10/10/2007, -9/+4But will it run on my iPhone........
- hotdamn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10It already is.
- alphaone, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6I'm starting to get worried that Apple is going the route that Windows has been on for a while...being that their eye is only to the future and nothing for older machines. I know up to this point OSX has run well on slower macs, but with all the graphical bells and whistles Apple has been injecting, it just makes me wonder.
- ThisIsMyName, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Eventually they're going to have to drop support for older machines. My guess is that for support purposes, PowerPC-based support will disappear sooner than later.
Not good for my trusty ol' G-5, but I can appreciate the difficulty in maintaining support for both x86 & PPC must be annoying.
Besides, I'd rather that OSX push the limits of the hardware, not be neutered in order to support older boxes. Windows does this, and it bugs the hell outta me! I understand why they try and support so much older hardware, but I want a hardware-optimized built if possible. It bothers me to know that Windows + my apps couild be faster if they were optimized (x686, at least), but I'm somewhat crippled by the non-optimized builds that are needed in order to support old hardware.
Not that you get highly optimized builds on OSX currently, but we'll be closer to that ideal once OSX is only supporting one hardware architecture (I'd imagine... I'm not a OS programming guru by any stretch of the imagination).
Besides, even if your Mac can't support the new features, you can still run the older versions of OSX, and you'll likely be able to run most 3rd party software for quite awhile into the future via Universal builds. - aussieNickuss, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I'm all for supporting older machines....BUT.....if you constantly consider the backwards technology, then you slow down progress and innovation.
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I think we'll see PPC support last through the next release after Leopard... Leopard itself supposedly has an 800MHz limit which is already cutting a few computers loose.
There are too many G5 desktops to ignore, and Universal Binaries are working pretty well so far... - ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Generally OS X new versions perform better. Those "tricks" are being done via your graphics cards OpenGL support, your CPU doesn't get involved. That is how a G4 mini 1.42 Ghz upstairs can do all "Vista like" tricks with 1% OS overhead.
OS X is not Windows.- 35263526, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Er.. Vista does exactly the same GPU-driven stuff that OS X does. That's sorta irrelevant.
- ckSubs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The one thing I really think Apple gets right is their willingness to completely drop old tech and adopt the new. I'm sure as hell glad my Macbook Pro doesn't have my roommate's Dell's floppy drive, VGA, and serial port. Windows needs a complete code refresh like they did with OS 9 > X.... if someone seriously needs windows 3.1 legacy support, run it in a virtual machine or something.
- ThisIsMyName, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Eventually they're going to have to drop support for older machines. My guess is that for support purposes, PowerPC-based support will disappear sooner than later.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I'm not seeing any updated training courses on GSX, so I'll take this with a grain of salt.
- pyrates, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2If this leeks on da intarweb, before the keynote, I'm gonna laugh. Nothing can be kept on the net now.
- vladx, on 10/10/2007, -10/+8Will it blend?
- Kyan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yes.
- samsoffes, on 10/10/2007, -7/+6to the idiots who were saying leopard doesn't have that much new stuff: you're wrong. lets just look at tiger which has even less features than leopard does on the surface. from a developer viewpoint tiger was 100x better than panther with all of the new libraries and stuff they added. leopard has so many new developer tools that are amazing.
not only do you get cool new apple apps, features, and ui... you get enhanced third party apps
stock non-apple fan reply: microsoft told to say i hate you and that leopard is stupid- ckSubs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The only things I'm looking forward to are Stacks, official BootCamp (hopefully easier to triple-boot), and the transparent menubar. Now if they had gotten rid of the antique menubar altogether, I'd really look forward to that...
- shethinkmefunny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I don't think the "antique" menubar is going anywhere. That's a hallmark of the Mac UI, and is arguably a better design, since it encourages muscle memory for more tasks than menubars on each window.
I personally find it annoying, but I can't say it's a bad idea. - ckSubs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I know that's the Mac way of doing things, but I hate it. Fitt's law be damned, the confusion of a constantly switching menubar is way more annoying than not being able to hit the buttons in one go. Microsoft is actually getting it right these days, either totally doing away with the menubar or putting it on a toggle switch. Everything you need should be available on your toolbar. Plus, the Mac way makes it so you can't implement Focus-Follows-Mouse. That's the part that really annoys me.

"Less features"? Log off and take some remedial English. Or at least go back to MySpace and stop polluting Digg.- shethinkmefunny, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3Hate to break it to ya, but Digg is the MySpace of news sites. If you want better banter, go to Slashdot or even Fark.
- LeeSoong, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1how about games?
best buy has 1500 video games for the pee sea, but a mac is a paperweight - no games.
the mac mini is a good start on a game console, but apple needs to boost its gpu up, add a few free games, and offer apple game controllers. apple should make the mac mini better than the ps3, with full hd 1080p output. those intel integrated gpu's are weak.
then game developers would take apple seriously, and be able to treat the mac mini as the apple game console.
of course the higher end macs would do even better, but videogames are worth billions, and apple is ignoring the chance to make money.
you think apple would have learned from its mistake with bungie and losing halo to microsoft. [big mistake]. apple should have bought bungie before demoing the game, before microsoft bought bungie. oops.

- danasghar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2does anyone know if all the new apps are getting rid of the brushed metal look and going with the style Itunes uses...I
- antitab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Brushed metal doesn't exist in Leopard, period. All applications that used that style are now simply unified aluminum, including any third party applications. For instance, VLC looks like this:

- mCanada, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1A friend just bought an iMac last night (I said to wait), anyone know if they'll get an upgrade coupon?
- schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If Leopard is released in ~60 days they should.
- beejive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0No, they shouldn't. Anyone paying the slightest bit of attention knows the new OS is being released soon. He should have waited. He's only out 99 bucks. I hope apple didn't create a sense of entitlement (with the iphone refunds) in anyone who buys before a product upgrade
- mCanada, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm not exactly sure why my original comment is getting dugg down (a question??) but A) OS upgrades have always followed this pattern (windows included) and B) it's just good customer service. Nothing to do with "entitlement". OS upgrade coupons are marginal losses for the vendor anyways and keep new found customers happy, so it's a win win situation..
- Darren07, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Yeeha! Getting a new Mac soon
- mlm4life, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1great news. already waiting for it. :)
- blurrie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1im excited. my g/f loves all the bells and whistles vista has like side bar and transparencies.. i love how i had to turn off a bunch of stupid ***** just so it wouldn't be eating 66% cpu cycles and upgraded her to 2gb of ram.. time for a real, stable, slick and well thought out os upgrade. she'll still hate leopard, hate macs, and hate everything apple.. except her iphone. =D
- Syphon8, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ya, because OS X doesn't need that. >>
- itsmedamon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Big snore. Let me know when you have a concrete release date.
