- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29Intel Macs don't have a BIOS.
- msgyrd, on 11/01/2007, -1/+21Macs use EFI, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extensible_Firmware_Interface
It's better than a BIOS in a few respects, and all PCs were probably going to switch to it eventually until Vista dropped the ball once again and pulled EFI support.
And installing OSX to an iPod is as simple as having it plugged in when you install, and just formatting your iPod for the job. - bengraver, on 11/23/2009, -1/+18Google cache has it: http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:http://www.everythingtech.tv/2006/05/17/mac-os-x-startup-key-sequences/&hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&sa=G&strip=1
- Remmy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19...
I'm ashamed that our names are so similar. - msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@remydic:
You're honestly going to argue that anything that acts as a BIOS *is* a BIOS? Wagon wheels and car tires may both make transportation easier, but one is slightly better than the other. - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11For those who dont want to wait for the article to load.
"I do not own a Mac (yet) but I do administrate some at work and have used this list a number of times. Macs dont have a “bios” per se but they do have keyboard shortcuts that can kick off various functions during boot. I’ve used the “T” one to boot from an ipod once (I had to install Tiger on a machine that didn’t have a DVD drive).
I’ve found two lists, one for Mac and one for Mac Intel machines.

X during startup - Force Mac OS X startup
option - (eventually) brings up a screen with startup volume choices
Option-Command-Shift-Delete - Bypass primary startup volume and seek a different startup volume (such as a CD or external disk)
C - Start up from a CD that has a system folder
N - Attempt to start up from a compatible network server (NetBoot)
T - Start up in FireWire Target Disk mode (very handy for plugging your Mac into another as an external hard drive)
Shift - start up in Safe Boot mode and temporarily disable login items and non-essential kernel extension files (Mac OS X 10.2 and later)
Command-V - Start up in Verbose mode.
Command-S - Start up in Single-User mode
cmd-opt-p-r - Zap PRAM. Hold down until second chime.
cmd-opt-n-v - Clear NV RAM. Similar to reset-all in Open Firmware.
cmd-opt-o-f - Boot into open firmware
hold mouse click - force eject a CD/DVD

Can front page articles get any lamer? - bbrosemer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11The digg effect may have caused just cause the server to bsod... Too bad it can't boot from an iPod...
- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@avihappy
Thanks for your help.
Why are people digging me down for this? There are probably a lot of people who aren't sure how to use it. I'd rather ask how than to use it incorrectly. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Go to Duggmirror.com (in your navigation bar, not a link)
Look around for the article
Next to the articles's name is [DUGG]
Click that to see the mirror.
Also people will post http://www.duggmirror.com in their comments, click that to see the article's cache (it looks at the article you came from and refers you). - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Will someone explain how to properly use digg mirror? I've seen it forever, but I don't know for sure how to post a working link. Thanks.
- fffizzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4urbandictionary.com ftw :)
- MikeFromAmerica, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8"for the win"
It's pure evil and should be avoided. I have a macro that automatically thumbs-down any comment that contains "FTW." - trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4WTF: What the *****?
FTW: ***** the What?? - fleischner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I use the xCuts widget, which contains ALL key commands.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/reference/xcuts.html - quik22, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8i keep seeing that FTW... for the love of god, what does it stand for?
- gropo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had Jaguar then Panther installed on my iPod 3G for a while during my tenure at a book compositor (stuck in an OS 9 workflow). 10.2 + discs will not reference a 3G/4G iPod as an installable volume. I wound up installing from a 10.1 CD and upgrading.
That said, using one of those itty bitty Hitachi drives as a boot volume is incredibly foolish. They weren't (and the confined space and proximity of the battery in an iPod wasn't) designed for the heat generated. I believe i prematurely aged my battery by doing this. - markdr123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That is the general theory of the Digg effect, yes.
- Flyinace2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes you can boot from an iPod with a dock connector as long as it supports FireWire. So basically 4G and earlier. I have Leopard installed on my old 3G 15gb iPod for a few weeks. Worked fine.
- CrappedCrusader, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I used this:
Option-Command-P-R until you hear two beeps. Reset NVRAM
when a Macbook Pro had funky color issues on the screen. I found the fix on some forum, glad to see everything compiled together. - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try typing
exit
It should give a login promt then. Single-user mode starts at the root user, since it's used for recovery in most cases.
- Ben - porkstacker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Now all we need are some useful links to Open Firmware commands:
http://www.firmworks.com/QuickRef.html
and
http://www.netneurotic.net/mac/openfirmware.html - rajid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just tried that to make sure. Nope, that's not it. Command-S gives you a root prompt after telling you how to check and mount other disk partitions, etc. The startup key I saw (and actually tried a while back to verify) would startup and say "Welcome to Darwin", then give you a "Login:" prompt.
- quik22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ kimos:
i did the search on acronym finder but "for the win" sounded stupid and didn't make sense. i figured there must have been something else... but apparently not. - zpjet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that's Command-S - Start up in Single-User mode
- cricketsymphony, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3DuggMirror:
Sorry, a mirror of Mac OSX startup key sequences is not available. - rajid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There used to be a key sequence you could hold down when booting MacOS X which would simply start Darwin without starting the GUI. It would give you a login prompt on a regular terminal screen. I can't seem to find anything about it anymore. Maybe it was removed?
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you just want to quickly see if DuggMirror caught the site, on this page (The comments page) :
Go to the address bar.
Double-click on "digg" (Selects it)>
Type duggmirror over it.
Hit go.
If it works (correctly mirrored), and no-one has posted the link yet, copy the address, hit back and paste it in the comment box. Going to the URl and changing digg to dugmirror, then copy/pasting it is less typing that www.duggmirror, and works on all browsers. so your as well comment'ing the full URL instead of the one that relies on refers being set.
- Ben - scooterbaga, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I believe that only the older 1-3G ipods can be booted from. They need to have a firewire port in the ipod and not the dock port.
Anyone know if it is possible with the dock/firewire cable? I'm pretty sure you still can't boot from USB on a mac. - LtCarter47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just used that to fix a funky sound issue I was having where the volume keys stopped controlling my external speakers, and only the internal.
- bills534, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Silly me thought FTW stood for "***** The World"
wow I was way off. - brianez21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can also set the default as Network Boot Volumes by holding F1 (Intel Macs).
A 'globe icon' will appear on the screen while it is searching for a server. - Skurt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you have one of these;
http://www.sendstation.com/us/products/pocketdock/index.html
You can boot with any iPod as an external FireWire drive.
The PocketDock FireWire is an indispensable add-on for the iPod & iPod mini, Apple’s sensational and wildly successful MP3 player. The tiny PocketDock FireWire lets you connect the new iPod’s docking port to a standard 6-pin FireWire cable, thus delivering on the iPod’s promise of freedom and independence.
Sadly, my Black 5g 60 only charges with the firewire, no sync. But! Since everything in the world uses USB, this at least frees up a port on my MacBook. - cricketsymphony, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1site _already_ down, mirror?
- abstrakone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm the author of the site, wow man 264 digg's, unfortunatly dreamhost isnt able to hold up to the number of users smacking the server.
- pinnin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cmd-shift-option-delete will attempt to boot from the NEXT volume that has a valid OS and is NOT the set startup disk. As far as I know this works on machines made w motorola design/partnerships from 680x0 to ppc (yup back to b4 os 6)
also the - skip to gui and goto darwin - answer lies here …
