- Crackshot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I'd also throw in the DivX and Flip4Mac plugins. They make quicktime much more robust and compatible for watching movies from the good ol' front row.

Boot Camp? - chmod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Is there a program which will say but a program with loads of windows into one container with tabs... say for Mac Msn thats all mac msn lack is the AV and tabs :("
Do you mind rephrasing this. I don't think I caught anything meaningful. - hookshotzz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10if you have some free time, your isight, and your cd collection, it's a lot of geeky fun
- Wogna, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Perosnally, for me, the advatages of OSX are in the small things. Like Automator, Dashboard, Expose', that it recognizes all my USB devices almost automatically, iLife coming preinstalled, and the more simple GUIs. It's kind of hard to explain. I have both a PC and a Mac, and my PC is like yours, never any crashes, freezes, viruses or spyware, but I still like my Mac more. Just try it out and make your own descisions.

- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Items in OS X that make switching easy (just for those that don't know):
Finder Tips
^F2 (control-F2): Move focus to the menu bar
^F3 (control-F3): Move focus to Dock
Use arrow keys to navigate left and right, up and down
Return to Select, Escape to Cancel
Screen Shots (Default format is PNG in Tiger)
Command-Shift-3: Save picture of screen as a file
Command-Option-Shift-3: Copy picture of screen to the clipboard
Command-Shift-4: Save picture of selected area as a file
Command-Option-Shift-4: Save picture of selected area to the clipboard
These tips make sense to PC users who are in office a lot, so don't digg me down if you are a Mac user. I have switched two PC users to Mac on these tips only recently. - dmthomas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Windows games that don't require 3d hardware acceleration or any amount of direct graphics device access can run in Parallels currently, you meant?
- gronne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I rarely have problems with XP such as crashes, freezes, etc... I don't get viruses and rarely get any spyware. I like mostly use the PC for games and internet browsing. Other than appearance, what would be the day to day advantage for a guy like me using OSX vs. XP?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Sadly, there are still no Mac games that would make me switch to OSX.
That's pretty much the last thing holding Mac OS back. - danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12It's so you don't have to use the crappy OS all the time. Just boot into windows when you want to play your game. Spend the rest of your precious time using a decent OS.
- the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@rasterbator - another shortcut many people dont seem to realise (and Ive been a mac user for 2.5 years and I only just discovered) is to switch windows WITHIN an application.
While command-tab cycles through applications, command-tilde (the ` ~) key above tab on a US keyboard layout, cycles through windows just within the application.
Took a while to get used to - as windows justs has alt-tab, which cycles through everything. - foomojive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6sorry but this is a sucky list. Before I get flamed, I'm a mac user.
1. sidenote - tried it, just adds clutter and another startup animation. just use stickies in the dashboard or textedit for text and drag images to the desktop.
2. Adium X - have it, love it
3. Transmit - why pay when cyberduck is free?
4. VLC - great but I use netflix and a DVR so I never use VLC
5. Smultron - great but very sparse on features. doesn't cut it if you're used to dreamweaver.
6. cashbox - great, so I hear
7. vienna - great for what it does but netvibes is about 50x better than this old, tired way of reading RSS.
8. firefox - necessary for google docs (writely) and yousendit.com, but otherwise I don't open it. safari works great.
9. thunderbird - uh... what about apple mail? much better and native.
10. candybar - costs money to change your icons? no thanks.
11. del.icio.us library - I don't have an iSight.
12. handbrake - my mac doesn't have a DVD player. I know, it's an older emac.
13. gimmesometune - why bother, just use iTunes.
14. iSafe - ever heard of keychain? it's built into OSX.
15. paparazzi - cmd - shift - 4.
16. transmission - got it, love it. don't use it much though.
17. podtube - iTube for PC works great too. - hookshotzz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5good call. i actualy do use both of them, and it definetly is nice when using the remote.
- Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@shalabi: Agreed. All this "switch to a console" or "switch to WoW" stuff is nonsense, because you shouldn't be forced to change your gaming habits as well as all the rest. I'm waiting on this supposed gaming support in Parallels. If they pull it off, count me in as a switcher.
- joerod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6because it runs on unix and has so many options out of the box like webserver, ftp server, ssh. Also dashboard is awesome, iphoto and the whole i family of apps are awesome. I've had my mac for +4 years and have never had to format it. Plus it just looks nicer.
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He wants to load several different programs into one window as tabs.
(This would be roughly equivalent to running windows and having your taskbar at the top of the screen and all programs always maximized. And then putting that in a window. :) ) - Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Windows also has about 300 bizillion free alternatives to notepad (and some of them are very nice).
The difficult part about "just try it out" is that it'll cost you a bare minimum of $500 to "try it out". - Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Agreed. but ten great apps is better than one. ;)
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Its all about quality, not quantity
1 great app is better than 10 mediocre ones - bill679, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"13. gimmesometune - why bother, just use iTunes."
Because iTunes won't recognize album art that you can't buy at the iTunes store. Scrolling through roughly 50gb's of my legally ripped music in cover flow yields - KayinNasaki, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8If Mac isn't going to give me games I might as well use linux. It'll certainly cost me a lot less. Especially since I won't need all that expensive hardware to, you know.. play games. Oh sure. Bootcamp is cool but who wants to have to boot to another OS to play games? Especially if you want to keep on things like IRC or AIM or whatever while doing it.
OK, so I boot into windows and play my game.. I got copies of GAIM sitting around on my windows partition so I don't miss anything.. So now I'm done playing... But hwy switch back? For some pretty looking buttons and scrolly things? Meh, perhaps I'm too much of a minimalist for a mac.
Now,. I don't want to bash Macs per-say. They're more iniately stable and secure then a windows machine (only really thanks to being partially *nix)... Granted a windows machine can be just as stable and... reasonably secure. So what else does Mac offer? Less games... but tons of pretty looking toys. Oh of course Mac has plenty of tools -- but basically all of them are also on Windows.
Now, if Mac hardware was cheaper ... or even just as expensive as normal hardware and if the MacOS... Yeah. Sure. Maybe. But to pay more for it? Pfft, screw that. Macs are good. They're pretty great depending on what you like -- but people walk around acting like everyone should use their precious Mac. But atleast for my self, they're too expensive and the interface is too glittery and mouse happy for my liking.
(and now to have this long and incoherent post be dug down because Digg loves Macs.) - blobdole, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Games are the only thing keeping me from primarily using Linux =
- FishPoisonCon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3if that's all you use if for (internet/games), and you're happy... then... none. stick with win.
/mac user, btw
edit: gahhh, should have refreshed... what chmod said - Wolfman~K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg for helping me find sidenote. Down with Stickies!
- Wogna, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5http://duggmirror.com/apple/Mac_Apps_that_make_switching_easy_and_worth_it
- Eccles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use Boot Camp to game, as when I'm playing a game, it doesn't matter too much that I'm not running my other standard stuff. My iMac reboots pretty quickly into either OS, the only "slowdown" is that to boot into Windows I have to choose restart and then hold down the Alt key for a bit; an app that would give me a one-click reboot into Windows would be quite welcome.
I was 100% Windows until I got my Mac in March, now I do most stuff on the Mac despite still having PCs around. It's just "cleaner", somehow. My files are in /Users/userid/Documents rather than c:Documents and SettingsuseridMy Documents, for example. But Mac vendors would probably hate me; the only commercial program I've bought for my Mac is Windows XP! - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3chmod,
I saw that one too but thought maybe it was my own comprehension that was lacking. Nice to see I'm not completely insane (just mostly). Whatever it is that he was trying to say, he's apparently unhappy about it based on the avatar at the end. - merr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Usually these "Wow! Cool! Free Mac apps!" lists start to get a little samey and boring for me, but this one is actually very helpful and had a few neat tools I've never seen before.
- chmod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"'types of apps'. You need to upgrade your reading skills mate."
*sigh* You need to learn not to be such a dick, mate.
Anyway, in that case the original poster is either trolling, or is ignorant. Not all apps are created the same, even though they may do the same/similar things. That is like asking "why would anyone on earth need photoshop when they have the gimp for free?".
Also, many mac users like macs and do not like linux. I used linux for a few years, and all the ***** you go through to keep things running smoothly made me want something better. I'm not saying this to flame all of the linux users out there because I have been one too, so please don't whine to me about how linux is sooo much better and I just don't know what I am doing. I probably know more about computers than a good portion of digg users. The apps go the same way. How many apps for linux do you have to go through a raft of ***** to get all of the dependencies? That just doesn't happen with os x apps. You just drag them to where you want them and use them. Also, this is only one persons list. There are many more reasons than 17 apps to make it worth switching. - gronne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thanks for the responses!
- bill679, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In case anyone else misses all the other duggmirrors others have previously posted:
http://duggmirror.com/apple/Mac_Apps_that_make_switching_easy_and_worth_it/ - chmod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Honestly if you like what you've got, then I see no reason to change. I prefer OS X because I like the way it works, I love that it is unixy, I like the look, and I love the apps available for it. The best I can say is find someone that has one and borrow theirs. Many people feel the way I do, but that doesn't mean you have to.
- m0shen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The CueCat is pretty handy. BG Micro has modified ones for $7.95
http://www.bgmicro.com/catalog.asp - KayinNasaki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was bashing over zealous mac users in that last sentence. As an artist who uses windows, I gotta deal with a lot of over the top mac lovers. :(
- chmod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just saying that having multiple monitors does not necessarily mean sidenote will fail.
- cjvino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You can try them out at CompUSA stores or an Apple Store but if you don't have either near you then yes, it is difficult.
About the only other thing is if you know somebody who has a Mac. I've had at least three of my friends switch after they played with my MacBook Pro... - ThePottsDome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sadly, that's why I'm getting a new Mac. To play games on windows.
- thecodemonk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Forbidden Page >.<
http://duggmirror.com - chmod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Honestly, they aren't even must have apps for a mac. Firefox does not work near as well as shiira, safari, or camino. Thunderbird is unnecessary because mail works damn good. VLC I can understand because it will play video formats that quicktime will not, but that is easily fixed with flip4mac and perian (and the fullscreen script hack) and the look feel of quicktime is better than vlc.
- InsaneHomer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Forbidden?
- ScottTFrazer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also Perian, which allows Quicktime to play a number of other video formats that Flip4Mac omits.
- picaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And here is the list of apps that have made switching from Windows to Mac OS X a horrible nightmare and make me want to claw my eyes out:
Quicken
I know I can run the Windows version via Boot Camp, know I can use iBank, Moneydance, gnuCash, blah blah blah, but I want a Mac-native version of Quicken that has feature and file-type parity with the Windows version. - cthellis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can always stick an XP partition on for gaming, if you're trying to shoehorn it in.
Or, my preference, you just have two PC's and one KB/M switchbox. A Mac mini will nestle alongside anything just fine. ;-) Gaming is really the only thing that makes one want to constantly upgrade anyway, so... - dohidied, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Smultron is pretty cool. I'm always looking for a nice, lightweight editor.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Delicious Library is one of my favorite Mac apps ever. If you want a cheap barcode scanner to use instead of your iSight, go pick up a CueCat on eBay. I got mine for $8, and it makes an awesome USB scanner - works right out of the box (just make sure it's modified - they usually are).
The one app that made me buy a MacBook instead of a PC laptop this time, though, was Scrivener:
http://www.literatureandlatte.com/freestuff/ScrivScreens.html
If you're a writer, there is NO better app for organizing your project and all the related materials, not to mention the beautiful full-screen writing mode that's like WriteRoom, with slight improvements. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TextEdit tries to be too "smart," and can screw up what you're working on if you're coding. Stickies aren't enough for long "pure text" files. I've always gone into the terminal and used pico, but this might be worth trying out instead.
VLC is the best video player for everything that you get off of the net - if you don't watch those kinds of videos, you don't need it. Just because you don't need it, doesn't keep it from being great.
I won't even get into why Firefox and its world of great extensions beats Safari for me - I'll just say this: try using Gmail in FF instead of Safari, and see how many features suddenly work that didn't before.
It's "Delicious Library" - no relation to the tagging site. Try an $8 CueCat, you can find them on eBay - it's a great cheap USB barcode scanner. Much less than getting an iSight, and it works a hell of a lot better for scanning barcodes. - Throlkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TomP:
Download the program called Adium that the article references, as it will allow you to connect to MSN and it keeps all of them tabbed. :) -
