- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26Umm, I thought apple prided itself on its new OSes working on all their machines-- at least the recent ones.
- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16no, but MacRumors will have a live AJAX feed
- wpholmes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18I hope they don't just put the effects in as eye candy (Vista's 3D window Rolodex-expose clone) Apple should stick to using all of the visual effects to make the user experience easier. (Like the genie minimize effect that shows you exactly where the window went)
- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12yeah, we used AJAX the last time we switched over to the "macrumorslive" systems (Macworld SanFrancisco). Go figure... the Digg community liked it :-) http://digg.com/apple/macrumorslive.com_using_AJAX_to_update_their_MacWorld_news
The implementation saved a crapload of bandwidth, as the whole page didn't have to reload each time to give updates. - pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11New finder++
- wilsonics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You have a valid comment, I guess it's still just fun to watch all the scheming and guessing before the new product announcements come to light...and then watch everyone slap their foreheads when they are all wrong....it's fun ;) I'll +digg you so you don't get buried.
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Why the hell would apple put the best laptop chip ever in their desktop and not their laptop?
- kimos, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16I don't get these rumor sites... Is it fun? It certainly isn't helpful information since it's more often than wrong incorrect.
Why not just wait... You can't act on anything till it's confirmed anyway. But I guess there are still people who play the lottery right? To each their own I guess, but I'm fully allowed to my own opinion too. *bury*
(I'm and avid Mac user too, I'm not just trolling) - Kerr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You can be almost 100% sure the Merom will be in the MacBook Pro.
- shanmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Safe bets:
1. Mac Pro (Core 2 Duo/Xeon)
2. Macbook Pro (Merom upgrade) - wpholmes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It's the WWDC (World Wide DEVELOPERS Conference)
...so no - corser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I believe that one of the proposed additions to the next version of OS X is garbage collection in the Objective C runtime. Not fancy but it will certainly ease development for OSX apps.
From everything I've read about OSX it seems to be a well designed system. This is probably one of the reasons it's able to run on such a wide range of performance levels and still maintain its usability. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Leopard to be available for sale, prior to the holidays. My $.02.
- tominabox1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I am assuming you are referring to something other than the Mini...
- wilsonics, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I think he's referring to the Pro Desktop, the tower model.
- Anth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hardware doesnt suprise me. I figured we were in for a "Pro" refresh. We'll probably see a consumer refresh in January at MacWorld.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5the macrumorslive system worked very well. I know that is where I will be monday.
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Dude, NONE of these "announcements" even EXIST yet.
- pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There's a lot more to each Mac OS upgrade then eye candy. I don't expect this to be any different.
- danbedford, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Yes, it is the developer's conference, but Apple has announced hardware products at WWDC in the past. For example: the initial launch of the PowerMac G5. I was at the SOHO apple store for the live broadcast in the theatre. Pretty awesome experience. Everyone went nuts when it was official that Mac users were finally getting the next generation processor they were waiting for.
I'm going to put my money on at least an announcement of the Mac Pro (Intel-based PowerMac) and MAYBE they will also announce Intel-based Xserves (I REALLY hope for an announcement of the new Xserves!!!). I do agree that there will be no iPod announcements, but I am hoping for them since iPod announcements do wonders for AAPL stock ; ) - grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Might see an iPod replacement at MacWorld Paris.
- corser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well it's Apple's MO to keep all its cards close. Which is why so many rumours are around. The less people know the more they talk about it. Nintendo is doing the same thing just look at how many Wii stories make the front page. As a marketing technique it works wonders. For me it frustrates just a little, I want a Mac but I don't want to get one just as they shift models down to the next lower price, and I would have a Wii pre-ordered at my local Toys R Us tomorrow if I knew how much they are selling it for.
You don't see people so enthusiastic about Dell's upcoming plans because we already know them, the specs change but the systems stay the same. (Though with more bloatware each year )
With Apple there might be a touch less video iPod or there might be a thought controlled iPod or a notebook that makes lattes, we don't know and they won't tell us, which makes it more interesting. - NerdyNinja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's pretty much what a Mac Pro is...
And seeing as Intel just came out with chips that could conceivably power such a beast, I think we will definitely be seeing some sweet desktop configurations. - RunLevelZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Willynilly
"Instead of dicking around with so-called 3-D, how about making it so we can RESIZE WINDOWS from their EDGES? This feat (routine on Windows and Unix UIs for at least a decade and a half) is still beyond the capabilities the vaunted Mac UI."
Are you serious. Have you ever used the MAC OS before? What a lame statement because MAC OS does indeed do this. - TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My bad, i ment a HIGH performance desktop model. The minis dont have a powerful GPU.
- GraceMolloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dear Steve Jobs,
I would Desperately like to hand you $2000. All I want in return is a 15" Macbook Pro with a Core 2 Duo in it. And the other usual in-erds of course :)
Yours Truly,
Grace Molloy
Soon to be Apple Convert - bleonard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5C'mon Steve! Gimme a kickass Finder in Leopard and an iPhone!!!
- g5maniac, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I am glad to finally see the xserve mentioned, all the other analysts and rumors have been saying that 'Apple will be transitioned after the G5 is replaced'
Well yeah, apart from that whole server thing they have going on... - vertinox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4My bets are on a full blown desktop. The Intel iMac are nice, but I wan't something where I can hook up a 30inch monitor to... Well if I could afford a 30 inch monitor.
- eggstylin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5First of all it is a DEVELOPER'S CONFERENCE meaning there probably won't be any (significant) consumer hardware products announced. Just wait for MacWorld to get your hands on a new NVIDIA iPodHDVideo U2 100GB FM Radio Microphone do-hickey or maybe that Quad Xeon MacPro. Most likely this will be an OS preview and maybe some hints of the future for Apple's OSX.
To iPod fanboys: nothing to see here, move along.
To Apple: please don't put the Core2 in your desktop line, it belongs in iMacs and MacBooks (and MacBook Pros). Use the Xeon instead. - RunLevelZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I stand corrected. It does only work when it is a custom implementation. Strange, the things we just do not notice until someone points it out.
- QueenOfSwords, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah you're not going to get shafted, it just that MeromBooks might not be available as soon as you'd like. Apple Expo Paris (September) would be a likely venue for Merom MBPs if they aren't unveiled at WWDC.
/Bought a YonahBook, happy it'll be fast *enough* . - danbedford, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@tacojohn: If you have a Macbook, then I'm sure these effects will work on your computer.
- Lacero, on 10/12/2007, -18/+19Mac OS XI "Oh Sexy" version, code-named "Pussy"
- thinkdifferent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Given that the server uses a G5 currently, saying the transition is done after the G5 would be correct. Technically they already replaced all of their G4-based models and one G5 model (iMac).
- skipunk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Hopefully the mac pro rumors are true...I have been hanging onto my aging ibook waiting for apple to release a higher end desktop
- TinFoil209, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Major OS upgrade = "cool 3D effect". Eyecandy rules I guess.
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the intel xserves are already out to those who have access. if they announce it at wwdc or not that is really not important, they already exist. it will just be known to those who don't know already.
the desktop is something i do not know about, so i'd like to find out more about it. i hope it includes a core2 chip and an hd drive. - Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ooooh I can hardly wait. I hope they've fixed the Mac Book Pro expanding battery problem :P. Can't wait for leopard, and the new tower mac "Mac Pro!"
- cubeeggs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2CARS is always accurate!
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@wpholmes - sorry dude i digged your comment down not up! Momentary spaz-itis...
"I hope they don't just put the effects in as eye candy (Vista's 3D window Rolodex-expose clone) Apple should stick to using all of the visual effects to make the user experience easier. (Like the genie minimize effect that shows you exactly where the window went)"
I agree, but I have to say no feature added thus far that uses impressive visual effects was pointless 'eye-candy'. Apple do stuff for a reason, like everyone else, they just make it lookgood at the same time.
Also this will have to work on Intel GMA950 graphics - they have sufficient 3D power to handle a bit of Dekstop 3D gadgetry, and also there'd be a firestorm from MAcBook and Mac mini users if it didn't. - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Erm, RTFA - "The most intriguing hints are that Apple will incorporate 3d effects *****in an impressive new feature of Leopard.**** The enhancement is not just eye candy, it'll be a major new feature that is engineered to look nice, just like Fast User Switching, Expose, Dashboard, and many more...
- Kerrigore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I don't see how they're going to justify the ridiculously high prices they used to charge for their tower systems with new Core 2 chips. They could get away with it when they could claim that the G5 was faster than any PC."
They won't need to because the new macs won't be significantly more expensive than other similarly equipped systems. They will probably be a bit more because Apple likes to keep a healthy margin and they have some custom parts, but I don't see it being any more than the difference between Apple intel laptops and pc laptops... which is to say, not much. Believe it or not, high-end G5's were expensive because the parts were- they essentially workstations, not consumer boxes or gaming rigs. - A-money, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1he was talking about the integrated graphics card in the macbooks
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Instead of dicking around with so-called 3-D, how about making it so we can RESIZE WINDOWS from their EDGES? This feat (routine on Windows and Unix UIs for at least a decade and a half) is still beyond the capabilities the vaunted Mac UI.
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Dude leopard is 10.5 not 11.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I prefer my eyecandy without any blood, thank you.
- mucnix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2obviously the "3d effect" will be wobbly windows. i won't use and OS if it doesn't support them ;)
- Hardcore41, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5I care more about functionality then "cool 3D effects".
- krazytom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3wow, way to post a site that talks about performance battles from 2002... the Mac's Core Duo is so much slower than a PC user's Core Duo.
