- Dome613, on 10/12/2007, -64/+33wow thats pretty nice, google should look into changing
- Wailord, on 10/12/2007, -40/+19Yeah. It took me a few seconds to actually mouse over, though...
- Copperhe4d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+80wait!....you found this over the ajax thing, right?
http://digg.com/tech_news/miniAJAX_com_Amazing_DHTML_and_AJAX_Code - fkr2, on 10/12/2007, -12/+94If Google looked like that their pagesize would have been bigger & slower than their competitors and they'd have fizzled and died years ago.
- abbott75, on 10/12/2007, -2/+123This guy is raking in the profits from referred Google searches now. Pretty sneaky though ;)
- denhamcoote, on 10/12/2007, -12/+37Read www.webpagesthatsuck.com
This is a classic case of 'Mystery Meat' navigation. I'll stick to Vanilla Google, thanks. :) - cds0528, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36for those who use NoScript, make sure you allow this site, I felt like a moron when I finally figured out why the icons weren't getting bigger...
(sorry for comment abuse) - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12Clean up the reflection of the Google logo, maybe streamline the code as much as possible, and you've got a winner. I certainly wouldn't mind if Google actually looked like this... really nice work on the Dock.
- e6d5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+95It was an actual project by Google: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_X
- Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Heh.
http://www.fordi.org/comics - Hugues, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Very nice indeed.
- gr8one, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6I Can't believe a story like this makes it to the front page. Oh Wow, I can do scaling effects on some pictures.... give me a break.
- chicagobiker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"This guy is raking in the profits from referred Google searches now. Pretty sneaky though ;)"
Is that what Dave Watanabe is doing by having us Safari folks use his Inquistor plug-in?
http://www.inquisitorx.com/safari/ - ipodsweatshop, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9Stolen from Google Labs, this guy is just pretending he did something. OS X would do better imitating Google and not the other way around.
- themoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7...old?
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.freewebs.com/goooglex/
- dougmc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4`This is a classic case of 'Mystery Meat' navigation'
Yes, it is, but it's OK. From the site you linked to, http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/biggest-mistakes-in-web-design-1995-2015.html, they say this --
There are certain sites that are allowed to use MMN: music, band, movie, art, experimental, fashion — sites where making an impression or being cool is mandatory. It’s OK because nobody really cares about these sites and their purpose isn’t really about making money.
I'd say this (experimental, being cool is mandatory, nobody cares, not about making money) fits this site to a tee, does it not?
But I agree, `mystery meat' sucks. But this is one of the less sucky examples of it's use that I've seen, even though I'm not a particularly big fan of the Mac OS X interface. - esquilax, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1the big question is, why OS X when you can do Ninja: http://www.ninja.com
- Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I like it :) although I am a mac Fanboy soooooo yeah...... :S
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46They had this awhile back called "Google Ex" or something like that but it was taken down pretty quickly. I think they were afraid of Apple's copyright lawyers coming to get them - even though the page was meant as a tribute. People saved the code and hosted it elsewhere after Google removed it from their servers.
- obey43, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21http://www.theplaceforitall.com/googlex/
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -9/+103No, Apple asked them to take it down, and they did.
Apple owns the patent to icons in a bar resizing when a mouse rolls over. It's ridiculous. I don't think that Apple would have actually sued Google over it, but they did take it down because Apple DID threaten them.
[humor]Apple probably owns the patent to the letter X as well, so calling it GoogleX was another reason Apple threatened.[/humor]
*added humor tags to prevent the fun police from digging me down - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12There should be a list of crappy patents somewhere so we can add stuff like that.
- dioxide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4if you read the source to this page, things like the graphics are in a google_ex directory. this may just be a mirror of googles beta site before apple asked them to take it down.
- indyinno, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2I have the same ajax effect for my Geek styles here - http://indyank.blogspot.com/
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16@rompom
Are you kidding me?
So what about dock apps like the Object Dock from Stardock?
http://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/
Why hasnt this come under fire yet? - Zionyx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0This was around late04-early 05
- schoate09, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7"Apple owns the patent to icons in a bar resizing when a mouse rolls over. It's ridiculous. I don't think that Apple would have actually sued Google over it, but they did take it down because Apple DID threaten them."
But they're less monopolistic and less anti-competitive than Microsoft? - redlemon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@schoate09
their entire business model depends on them having unique (and patented) design and function. plus their lawyers are probably dick monkeys just like everyone else's lawyers.
- neosublime, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8You should create a Greasemonkey script, or a user style for stylish. I think the script would work better.
BTW: doesnt display properly in Safari, but looks great in Firefox. But it could be my ad-blocking plugins.- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There is (or was) a gresemokey script... userscripts.org
- cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/609
Though with this version the text box will vanish, though "Anuj" has a simple fix in the comments section of userscripts.org
I've figured out a temporary fix to the issue of the text box disappearing when you are logged in. On line 223,
emplacement.replaceChild(thediv, document.getElementsByTagName('table')[1]);
just replace the 1 in the brackets with a 0. The text box should show up now.
- mightyulysses, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31The only thing that looks like Mac OSX is the icons getting larger like the dock, not much else...
- malavalla, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I would put the news second and groups third
- thatgirlismine, on 10/12/2007, -7/+36"Mac OS X"
- SR388, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23using spacebar would've add ed too many preci ous sec onds to the sub miss ion..
- Asriel86, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Old as sin and not very mac-specific. There were zoom-in rollovers long before the Dock came around.
- Kyderdog, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1When and where?
- jkrohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1KDE 2.1 had icon zooming before OS X was released.
- Pliep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26This is VERY old but was made by Google labs as a tribute to Mac OS X.
- avatarpalin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2You know, in a small way that has made google look much better. If you wanted to go the whole "web 2.0" look you would drop the the last vowel.
www.googl.com
.....seems to be the thing. Although it might turn out to be the 'mullet' of branding design. - matthodge, on 10/12/2007, -23/+13"Roses are red. Violets are blue. OS X sucks. Eat a big poo."
- grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3I bet you passed English!
- tdskate, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1This is nice!
Maybe the google logo should be in Apple Myriad font.- grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Isn't Myriad an Adobe font?
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You mean Apple Garamond?
http://www.dafont.com/apple-garamond.font
tho AFAIK, they don't really use it anymore. - Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Myriad Pro
http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/P/P_1706.html
- aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10erm... looks nothing like Mac OSX. Looks like a bad Gnome clone
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i had a google/ig module that made the buttons similar to that a while back
- bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3If you sum up all the time people spend on changing the simple user interface of Google to their pimped out candy bar version, it would be enough time to find the cure for cancer. Go make yourself useful!
No Brawndo on the plants.- redlemon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i think it's still too soon to make idiocracy references. give it time, it will bloom.
- redlemon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1crap, i'm pretty stoned and none of my comments are making sense when i come back 5 minutes later. that's all for today!
- remydlc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8iGoogle
- bestadvocate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11iDo2
- slayerboy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Why or how is this even news? How is it I heard about this a year ago? It was GoogleX, Apple made them take it down. Enough with the old ***** already. if you can't think of anything to friggin feed, don't feed anything at all! My god I'm getting sick of Digg being the same thing rehashed and other sites that used to be "slow" are now getting more relevant news to me faster than Digg is!
- redlemon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i buried it.
- redlemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1oh and google news dude. seriously. much faster than digg for that stuff.
- AttackingHobo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3One problem.... It says something to the effect that OSX rocks or something.
If this is true then it would have not been for yesterday's 14th hour when 13 midgets juggling syringes jumped out a closet and exploded.
Therefore this page looks too much like a MAC, and therefore sucks. - elitexero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...it would look tacky and childish.
- growlzor, on 10/12/2007, -6/+50wtf is google?
- StephenCIreland, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4are you being serious ?
- Greyarea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Google for it.
- solodude59, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1wtf d00d... wtf is wrong with you.... lawl n00b...
*sarcasm*
- bart5986, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1this is great, google should use this as the default page.
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5There's a reason why google has never changed their default page. The less images on google, the less they have to pay for bandwidth. Seriously, if they even added one more image, it would nearly double their bandwidth costs.
- tylerkempt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ignignokt01:
"There's a reason why google has never changed their default page. The less images on google, the less they have to pay for bandwidth. Seriously, if they even added one more image, it would nearly double their bandwidth costs."
How about the Google custom homepage then?
- tomis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yup. And it's just as annoyingly useless as Apple's Dock. And that's coming from a hard core mac user.
This is over a year old. Neat tech demo, but not really a big deal. - ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Really, the lamest thing I have ever seen on the front page.
- Adenosine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Looks more Tango/Gnome-ish than OSX
- po6ot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ya, these icons don't really conform to the Apple Human Interface Guidlines
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/OSXHIGuidelines/XHIGIntro/chapter_1_section_1.html
The style is much more Tango/Gnome.
- po6ot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ya, these icons don't really conform to the Apple Human Interface Guidlines
- loudestnoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ha, this is super old, but I loved it when it came out (for the 2 days it was on Google) and ever since hosted via mirror on other sites. Doesn't look much like OS X, but it shows how Google appreciates Macs.
- jetsetter883, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1if Google looked like a Mac i'd switch to Yahoo.
- insovietrussia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If a Mac looked like Yahoo I'd switch to Altavista.
- sjrberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What the heck? This is just GoogleX! (From way back when) LAME!!
- wamatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not quite the same. OSX dock resizes the icons AROUND the one you currently moused over but to a lesser degree than the 'active' icon. This gives it a much smoother look. Probably pretty easy to implement and just an oversite by the Google engineer who made this.
- eliburford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That reflection is huge... They should have done something nice with the logo other than that reflection too.
- eliburford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry for double post, but anyone know why "Froogle" is in there in white?
- DigitalJester, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2If Google where an apple solution, it would be a good solution, if not one of the best, but most of its usersfans would arrogant, pompus, narrow minded idiots.
Thank god it isn't.- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4> most of its usersfans would arrogant, pompus, narrow minded idiots.
Most or a vocal few?
If you think that way of most Mac users, then the only arrogance around here is coming from you.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4> most of its usersfans would arrogant, pompus, narrow minded idiots.
- fengshui, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yep is a rip of the Google X setup and copied from a recent Digg post about Mini Ajax.
Has anyone else spotted the poster's blog and it's latest post on Original Content and a quote:
"Do you know how those guys got big in the first place. Original content. So copying them isn’t going to get you anywhere."
Seems like he needs to follow his own advice:
http://blogsblog.joeanderson.co.uk/original-content#respond - koumei, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0pretty good. seems more friendly than Google itself.
- geuisteses, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Christ THIS IS OLD. SEVERAL YEARS.
- MrAuer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1http://digg.com/politics/BBC_Reported_Building_7_Had_Collapsed_20_Minutes_Before_It_Fell
- maxshanly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is frickin' old. Google did this about a year or so ago and Apple made them take it off via a C&D. :P
You newb. :D - ilikeprivacy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Welcome to 2004! (if not earlier)
- comradeTJH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4But it doesn't find things faster or better just if some fancy pictures gets bigger when mouseovering. I like google as it is now.
- Sethwm2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Apple works together with Google all the time I would not be surprised if this is back up for real in the future.
- redlemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wow, the discussion going on here is really interesting.
- thepylongenius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This was cool 2 years ago when I first heard about it.
http://www.theregister.com/2005/03/17/google_x_files_disappear - mobilitatis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The real google special site for Apple users is this
http://www.google.com/mac.html - griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The icons actually look more like something out of BeOS.
- metafore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i hear the unmistakable sound of lawyers coming.
- SamboyLR, on 05/23/2008, -1/+0This is tight... damn... it's a shame Mac would sue for such a thing. I really like that "Stardock" that championchap put up. Would there be something like that for MS Vista?
- nixdoctor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It "is" default theme of Vista!
- SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1another loser wastes his time and still no one cares
- crazyboy1121, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm going to start using that from now on...lol!
- theGOG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.networkadvanced.com/google_modules/googleX_v2/googleX_v2.xml
If you add this to a google home page, it will be displayed in Google X Format. - madmonk71, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I like the regular Google home page. Very clean and easy. This is pretty cool, but if it were a real OS X layout, the icons would magnify as you moused over them.
- ericcoolls, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2this is old
- amitbasak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i was expecting more... like those same overrated style of mac.
